Dave Richardson, the ICC’s chief executive, has urged banned Pakistan duo Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif to “publicly accept their parts” in corruption and to cooperate with the ICC’s anti-corruption and security unit (ASCU) and begin a rehabilitation program. Butt and Asif had appeals against their bans from cricket dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last week.Richardson’s comments came after the ICC had received full, written decisions on the verdicts from CAS, in which it was suggested that Butt had for the first time admitted to his involvement in spot-fixing during the 2010 Lord’s Test between England and Pakistan.”The guilt of these men has now been established on three separate occasions, in three separate sets of proceedings, and in three separate forums,” Richardson said in a statement. “The time has now come for them to stop misleading the members of the public, especially the supporters of the Pakistan cricket team, and to publicly accept their parts in this corrupt conspiracy.”I am certain that both Mr Butt and Mr Asif have information that can be of great assistance to the ACSU and its ongoing fight against corruption in cricket. I would, therefore, urge them, without any further delay, to start the process of rebuilding their lives and reputations by apologising for their actions and meeting with ICC’s anti-corruption officials to come clean about what actually happened.”After a hearing in February, CAS took two months to reject Asif and Butt’s appeals against the ICC bans they received in 2011 for their part in the spot-fixing scandal uncovered by an English newspaper in 2010. Asif had wanted the ICC ruling overturned while Butt asked for his ban to be reduced but CAS did not find any evidence to support either claim.”We are pleased to note that the CAS panel rejected each and every one of the allegations that were made of prosecutorial misconduct by the ICC, and bias and incompetence on the part of the independent anti-corruption tribunal, thereby reinforcing that the players were treated fairly and in accordance with the principles of natural justice at all times,” Richardson said.”In addition to the CAS finding Mr Asif a party to the conspiracy to act corruptly, it is also pleasing to note from the decisions that Mr Butt acknowledged his part in the fix before the CAS panel.”ESPNcricinfo understands that if during the first five years of their bans the players do not take part in any educational programme, the extra suspended element will come into effect – five years for Butt and two for Asif. The extensions can be waived only if they take part in a PCB anti-corruption education programme. Both players have so far refused to accept their part in public, despite being found culpable on three separate occasions: first, by the ICC’s independent anti-corruption tribunal, then in the English criminal courts, and finally before CAS, the ultimate appeal body in sport.Butt apologised in public only for a “failure to report to the ICC” on his return to Lahore from London, after serving seven months of his 30-month jail sentence. Asif was also imprisoned in the UK, serving half of a 12-month term. Butt was recently asked if he admitted his part in the notorious spot-fixing episode but the former captain refused to respond.

The most important will be the working committee meeting to discuss the income tax department’s recent notice, and there will also be an IPL-centric conference.The tax authorities had slapped a Rs 2300 crore notice (approx. $433m) on the Indian board following a change in the BCCI’s objectives. As a result, the income tax department has not only demanded tax from the income generated through commercial properties, primarily the IPL, but they have also demanded taxes from the affiliated units of the BCCI for the share of IPL profits distributed among them.Following the notice, the BCCI in its working meeting on February 4 in Chennai, had formed a committee headed by treasurer Ajay Shirke to suggest the plan of action. With the financial year set to end on March 31, the deadline for the income tax notice, Shirke and his committee will present their suggestions to the working committee, which will then decide the course of action.Meanwhile, Friday is also likely to see the end of suspense over the venue for Pune Warriors’ home games. With the Sahara Group, owners of the franchise, and the Maharashtra Cricket Association, the staging association, involved in a legal dispute over the title rights of the stadium on the outskirts of Pune, Sahara have been reluctant to play their home games in Pune. With the sixth edition of the IPL set to get underway in less than three weeks from now, time is running out for theIPL top brass.The IPL authorities are also likely finalise associate sponsors for the next five years. Of the two, India need a win, any win.For India, it is a strange situation. First, they fell in their own trap in the Tests and now they need to find the motivation to come out of the slump and play positive cricket. It doesn’t help that the nucleus of their T20 squad is still the same as the Test side. MS Dhoni, whose leadership has been under fire, needs to arrest the slide and switch gears for a format, which appears, suited to the Indian team – hard-hitting batsmen, restrictive bowlers and a wait-and-watch style of captaincy. The reality, though, is that India haven’t really dominated on the international level even in T20s.Unlike India, England’s T20 side bears a completely different look. The architects of the series win are already back in England for Christmas, but they have left a scarred Indian team for their T20 generation to feast upon. Most in the side, captained by Eoin Morgan, have been in India for some time now and would have spent time getting used to the spinning conditions. So on paper, England have again been methodical in their preparations. That doesn’t directly translate to success – if pitches take spin, the young side could again appear like rabbit in headlights. Bengal have never beaten Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, and at stumps on the second day it seemed they may have squandered another opportunity to end that winless run since 1949. Bengal have had a frustrating tournament so far, and the current game is threatening to head the way of their low-scoring encounter against Madhya Pradesh in the previous round, which they had lost. Having bowled Mumbai out for 297, Bengal should have got themselves into a position to take a lead, but their batsmen, barring opener Arindam Das, who stayed through to the finish to be stranded on 98, let them down. Ankeet Chavan, the left-arm spinner, picked up four for 61, his best haul in first-class cricket.The Brabourne Stadium track continued to offer assistance to the seamers, and helped the spinners derive extra bounce and sharp turn. But Bengal’s performance had less to do with the conditions than failing to seize on a second chance offered through slip-ups in the field from Mumbai. Three senior Bengal players, including their captain, were guilty of that. Manoj Tiwary, who did better than his counterpart Rohit Sharma, was given a life on 23 when Wasim Jaffer dropped a simple chance at slip. Wriddhiman Saha, the vice-captain, was bowled off a no-ball on nought and Subhomoy Das was put down at first slip on 19. Tiwary added just 16 more after his reprieve, and the other two fell the very next delivery.Mumbai came hard at Bengal. They rarely stationed more than two fielders in the deep, and showed the urgency in their approach, if not their fielding, to defend a gettable total. They began with four slips and a gully for Dhawal Kulkarni and the steady flow of wickets that followed enabled them to retain packed close-in fields against the seamers as well as the two specialist spinners. The first wicket, of Rohan Banerjee, was a slice of luck, however, as he was run out after being sent back while attempting a third run. Shortly after, the first ball Kulkarni bowled round the wicket got him the wicket of Writam Porel, who was caught at third slip.Tiwary is not one to look completely settled but he’s got a prolific record in domestic cricket to back up his style. His brief innings today had its fair share of plays and misses. It included a leading edge that wasn’t far from extra cover, an edge over the slips, an airy shot into the off side that almost carried, and a missed chance by Jaffer at slip off Chavan’s next ball. Tiwary counter-attacked, lofting Chavan for successive boundaries that over, one being a six over long-on. He added 72 with Arindam but loosely chipped a flighted delivery from Chavan to mid-off immediately after punching a short ball through cover for four.Chavan bowled consistently from the Club House end, and round the wicket, targeting some rough areas on the track. He averaged 63.5 for his four wickets on flat tracks in the two games before this, and his captain Rohit Sharma had an extended conversation with him on the eve of this game. “It was a pep talk. On my part, in the previous games my bowling wasn’t that good as such so I had to do well getting this game. Fortunately, the wicket favoured me and it happened,” Chavan said. “On that [flat] wicket, we needed patience and [were required to] just keep bowling, and if the batsman made a mistake, you could get him out. Here, you had chances of getting him out.”Saha was bowled by a flighted delivery from Ramesh Powar, only for the umpire to double-check for a no-ball and rule that Pawar had overstepped. But the next ball was even better, as Pawar got it to jump off a good length and rap Saha on the glove, resulting in a catch at short leg. Subhomoy looked promising during his innings, smashing Pawar over his head and welcoming Kulkarni in his new spell with an imperious drive down the ground. He, too, was put down, by Hiken Shah at second slip, but prodded again at one of Chavan’s deliveries that turned away to be caught at first slip. Bengal had slid to 132 for 5.There was still depth in Bengal’s batting, but Abhishek Jhunjhunwala nicked Avishkar Salvi after looking good with a couple of boundaries and Chavan trapped Laxmi Shukla in front while he tried to sweep. All this time, as wickets kept crushing Bengal’s hopes raised by partnerships that had looked encouraging, Arindam’s solidity and assuredness stood out at the other end.Arindam, playing his first game in this Ranji season, cashed in on the width provided by seamers to pierce the off-side field. He used his feet well against spin, though he, too, had some nervous moments when he edged to slip, but the ball had bounced before reaching the fielder as he had played it down with soft hands. As Mumbai spread the field to give him the single when Bengal were eight down, he still managed to find the ropes, once pulling Kulkarni handsomely past two men in the deep. But he was to be deprived of a ninth first-class ton, as Kshemal Waingankar nipped out the last two wickets and robbed Bengal of greater consolation.

Em 2019, recuperado, Werley busca se superar em todos os sentidos para dar o máximo de seu potencial no clube.

Werley sabe de sua importância para o Vasco. Mesmo não conseguindo uma sequência ao longo dos 12 meses do ano – entrou em campo apenas 23 vezes, com nove vitórias, seis empates e oito derrotas, aproveitamento de 47,8% e nenhum gol marcado -, o zagueiro foi um dos que menos erraram nas partidas, mostrando qualidade para atuar como titular do setor. Na última partida de 2018, diante do Ceará, no início deste mês, quando o Vasco sofreria o quarto rebaixamento no Campeonato Brasileiro de sua história caso tivesse sido derrotado – o duelo, na ocasião, terminou sem gols -, Werley fez um corte preciso que foi comemorado como um gol.

– Foi uma temporada de altos e baixos para o clube, e não conseguimos manter uma regularidade. Oscilamos bastante desde o começo do ano. O Brasileiro é sempre um torneio difícil de se jogar. É indispensável em campeonatos desse tipo ser uma equipe regular. O mais importante foi manter o clube na Série A para fazer tudo diferente no ano que vem. Foi um grande alívio tudo que aconteceu na última rodada. Aquele corte eu vi algumas vezes, foi um lance muito importante da partida, comemorei como se fosse um gol. Se a bola entrasse, poderia mudar totalmente o destino da partida e do clube – afirmou Werley, relembrando:

– Quando estava atravessando meu melhor momento, tive um problema no braço e fiquei quase cinco meses sem atuar. Logo depois, no primeiro jogo após retorno, acabei quebrando o pé. Foi uma falta de sorte, pode acontecer com qualquer atleta, mas infelizmente aconteceu comigo. Graças a Deus consegui terminar a temporada bem, ajudando o Vasco e os meus companheiros, mesmo não estando 100% fisicamente. As lesões me atrapalharam muito, não consegui em nenhum momento ter ritmo de jogo e uma sequência, mas foi gratificante terminar da forma que foi. Tenho certeza que 2019 será um ano muito importante para mim e para o clube.

CONFIANÇA APÓS COBRANÇA POR FALTA DE REGULARIDADE DO VASCO

Um dos pontos mais cobrados pelos torcedores do Vasco ao longo deste ano foi a falta de regularidade da equipe. Foram cinco competições disputadas – Campeonato Carioca, Conmebol Libertadores, Copa do Brasil, Campeonato Brasileiro e Conmebol Sul-Americana -, com o Cruz-Maltino dando esperança de título a torcida somente no Estadual – ficou com o segundo lugar depois de perder para o Botafogo na decisão. Nas demais competições, eliminações precoces e brigas negativas. Esta falta de regularidade assustou o elenco, que acredita ter confiança para que em 2019, ao lado dos vascaínos, não passe pela mesma dificuldade.

– O torcedor pode ter certeza que a próxima temporada será totalmente diferente dessa de 2018. O Vasco precisa estar brigando por títulos, por coisas grandes, até para deixar o torcedor feliz e empolgado. Vamos trabalhar muito aqui dentro para que o ano de 2019 seja especial para todos. Estamos empenhados nessa missão e contamos com o apoio da torcida. Ela vai ser muito importante, assim como foi nessa reta final do Brasileiro. Vamos procurar fazer uma temporada que represente a grandeza do clube e da torcida vascaína – ressaltou o zagueiro Werley, finalizando:

– A expectativa é melhor possível. Vou trabalhar muito e me dedicar bastante para ter uma sequência, poder me firmar de vez no clube e dar alegrias ao torcedor. Eu tenho gostado muito do clube. O que a torcida fez nos jogos importantes dentro de casa só fez crescer minha vontade e meu carinho pelo clube. O Vasco é um gigante do futebol brasileiro e mundial. A temporada de 2018 não foi das melhores, mas teremos uma nova oportunidade para fazer diferente e ficar marcado na história desse clube.

BRENO DEVE RETORNAR SOMENTE NO CAMPEONATO BRASILEIRO

Quem também passou pelo drama de lesões ao longo desta temporada foi o zagueiro Breno. O defensor, com contrato com o Vasco até o fim de 2020, entrou em campo neste 2018 em somente oito partidas – quatro vitórias, dois empates e duas derrotas, aproveitamento de 58% e nenhum gol marcado -, segue em recuperação de uma cirurgia no joelho esquerdo e deve ficar à disposição do técnico Alberto Valentim apenas para a partir do Campeonato Brasileiro de 2019.

Neste trabalho de recuperação no departamento médico do Vasco, Breno não tirou férias, seguindo a rotina de tratamento no CT do Almirante. O zagueiro está na primeira fase de fisioterapia, o que deve durar mais dois meses. Oficialmente, o Cruz-Maltino não dá um prazo de retorno do jogador aos campos por conta de todo um cuidado especial que é feito em seu planejamento de recuperação da cirurgia.

A última vez que Breno entrou em campo foi no dia 9 de agosto, diante da LDU, do Equador, pela Conmebol Sul-Americana. O zagueiro precisou passar por uma cirurgia no ligamento colateral lateral do joelho esquerdo. Vale lembrar que este foi o quarto procedimento do atleta enquanto defende as cores do Vasco – foi contratado em 2017, ainda pela gestão anterior ao do atual presidente Alexandre Campello. Para a posição, além de Breno e Werley, o Vasco conta com Leandro Castan, que pode deixar o clube para o Corinthians, Oswaldo Henríquez, Ricardo Graça, Miranda e Luiz Gustavo, que negocia se terá o contrato renovado ou não com o Vasco.
