“Can we start our summer now?” Michael Clarke, the stand-in captain, asked the question after Australia had ended a seven-match losing streak with an eight-wicket win over a switched-off Sri Lanka at the Gabba.Australia’s international summer usually opens in Brisbane with the first Test, but this three-game one-day series was squeezed in, with organisers hoping it would spark the Ashes summer. Instead it resulted in the home side falling to three defeats in a week in front of tiny crowds, including only 9037 for the dead rubber.Clarke’s half-century to finish off the contest and strong performances from Clint McKay and Mitchell Starc improved the local moods. McKay grabbed career-best figures of 5 for 33 and Starc impressed in his second ODI with 4 for 27 as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 115.”It will kick-start our summer along nicely with the Ashes coming up, then the one-dayers before the World Cup,” McKay said. “It’s the first step in the right direction to make sure we play some good cricket all summer.”The win was Australia’s first in all forms of the game since July and McKay said it was “a bit of a relief”. “But with the belief we have in the group at the moment, we knew we weren’t too far away,” McKay said. “We had been playing good cricket at times but just hadn’t come away with the win.”Starc is only 20 but showed he was one to watch and easily out-bowled Mitchell Johnson, the side’s other left-arm fast man. “He hasn’t stopped smiling,” McKay said of Starc. “He bowled beautifully tonight and he’s a great one for the future.”There’s a lot of young quicks coming through and Mitch put his hand up tonight. He bowled with good pace and had it swinging around a bit and he’s going to be one to watch out for.”

Celtic pulled a blinder with Tony Watt sale

Celtic have seen numerous players leave the Parkhead club for significant amounts of money over the years such as Odsonne Edouard, Kieran Tierney and Moussa Dembele among others.

One other player that the Hoops managed to make a profit on is Tony Watt.

Having joined the club’s U20 side from Airdrie United back in 2011, the striker was sold to Belgian club Standard Liege in the 2014 summer transfer window for a fee of £1.35m according to Transfermarkt.

During his time at the Parkhead club, the Scotsman made just 34 appearances in a Celtic shirt, scoring eight goals and delivering five assists in the process.

One of the goals Watt scored came during Celtic’s infamous 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League back in 2012.

The 28-year-old only spent a few months with Liege before then having spells with numerous clubs in England, Scotland, Belgium and Russia.

Back in the previous January transfer window, the centre-forward joined Dundee United from Motherwell after scoring 19 goals in 70 appearances, in a deal worth just £107k.

This shows how much his transfer value has plummeted since leaving Celtic, who certainly pulled a blinder by cashing in on him when they did.

Since joining United, Watt has scored only once in 14 appearances across all competitions.

To highlight just how disappointing the centre-forward has been for his current club in front of goal, only four of the 13 shots at goal he’s had in the league have been on target.

Having described himself as being like a “villain” when he celebrated his goal against Motherwell back in February, the former Hoops figure also admitted to being “selfish” for moving to United in the first place.

Taking into account how Celtic have scored more goals (78) in the SPFL this season than Motherwell (38) and United (31) combined, it doesn’t seem likely that many Hoops fans will have been hoping that their club had kept hold of the well-travelled attacker.

With all of this in mind, this is a prime example of Celtic making the right decision when it comes to cashing in on one of their key players and moving on without them.

Tottenham: Wenham’s big Doherty claim

Tottenham Hotspur ‘insider’ John Wenham expects the club to ‘get rid’ of Matt Doherty during the summer transfer window.

The lowdown

Spurs paid £15.1million to sign Doherty from Wolverhampton Wanderers ahead of the 2020/21 season.

The wing-back penned a four-year, £65,400-per-week contract on his arrival in North London.

Doherty was enjoying an extended run in the side under Antonio Conte, starting seven consecutive Premier League matches before sustaining a season-ending knee injury earlier this month.

The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick said the 30-year-old had been in ‘resurgent’ form, The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare called the injury a ‘big’ blow, and Conte himself confessed it is ‘really bad news’.

The latest

Speaking to Football Insider, Wenham predicted that Spurs will sell Doherty, whom he believes is ‘out of his depth’.

“I would still get rid of him and I think we will,” he said.

“I’m basing this on the game against Man United. He was in a run of good form and as soon as he came up against someone at a decent level he couldn’t handle it.

“We want to go back to the Champions League next season, that’s the level we need to be at.

“He wasn’t good enough for that, he was out of his depth. I think he will be moved on.

“Hopefully this run of form has done well to increase his price. There is an argument for him staying as backup but I just don’t think he’s good enough for where this club wants to be.”

The verdict

It’s true that Doherty did play in some kinder fixtures prior to his injury.

Spurs’ run included games against Leeds United, Everton, Newcastle United and Aston Villa, all of whom currently sit in the league’s bottom seven.

But is Wenham’s assessment of Doherty’s performance in the 3-2 defeat against Manchester United fair?

Well, on the one hand, he won a respectable four out of seven duels and completed 31 of the 36 passes he attempted (via SofaScore).

But on the other, it’s fair to say his offensive impact was limited, given that the Irishman failed to create a chance or find a team-mate with any of his three crosses.

South Africa take title with perfect record

A round-up of the action from the fifth day of the ICC Women’s Cricket Challenge

Shandre Fritz’s powerful 61 steered South Africa to victory•International Cricket Council

Scorecard
South Africa took the top spot in the ODI leg of the ICC Women’s Cricket Challenge, thrashing Netherlands by ten wickets at North-West University N0.2 Ground in Potchefstroom to notch up their fifth consecutive win.Netherlands, who were asked to bat, lost their openers cheaply before a 35-run stand between captain Helmien Rambaldo and Marijn Nijman promised to stabilise the innings. That, however, didn’t happen as a collective bowling effort by South Africa, led by offspinner Sunette Loubser who grabbed three wickets, cut through any resistance from the Netherlands batsmen. The progress was painstakingly slow and only one among the last six batsmen reached double-figures. Medium-pacer Marcia Letsaolo and 17-year old legspinner Dane van Niekerk took two wickets each, as Netherlands folded for 109.The South African reply was ruthless, with the openers, Shandre Fritz and Trisha Chetty, dominating the bowlers to finish the game with 32.4 overs to spare. As a result of their win, South Africa move to No.5 from No.7 in the women’s ODI rankings.
ScorecardSri Lanka prevailed over Ireland in a tense encounter at the Witrand Cricket Field in Potchefstroom, winning by two wickets to finish third in the tournament.Ireland opted to bat and their batsmen responded well, led by opener Clare Shillington who top-scored with 78. Her innings included just five fours and involved plenty of running, and her partners supported her well. Isobel Joyce and Jill Whelan were involved with Shillington in stands of 70 and 38 respectively to lay a strong platform. The Sri Lankan bowlers, however, hit back, grabbing two wickets with the score on 146 and striking steadily thereafter to restrict Ireland to 211 for 8. Seamer Chamani Seneviratna and offspinning allrounder Shashikala Siriwardene took two wickets each.Sri Lanka appeared to be in trouble in their reply, reduced to 35 for 3 at one stage, but opener Inoka Galegedara and middle-order batsman Sandamali Dolawatta put them back in contention. They first added 70 before Galegedara retired hurt and then a further 23 until she was dismissed for 50. The pair had put Sri Lanka ahead of the required rate but both fell in quick succession, Dolawatta being dismissed for 74 to make it 194 for 6. A couple more wickets followed, the eighth falling for 211 but the ninth-wicket pair held its nerve to seal victory with four overs to spare.
Scorecard
Stafanie Taylor reaffirmed her status as the best batsman in the tournament by making an 83 that set up West Indies for an easy victory over Pakistan. The win was West Indies’ fourth and secured them second spot, while Pakistan finished fourth after losing their final three matches. Taylor completed the one-day leg with 390 runs, more than double the next highest scorer.Taylor was assisted by her captain, Merissa Aguilleira, with whom she shared a 118-run stand for the third wicket. Taylor was dismissed in the 40th over, short of her third one-day century, but she had provided the platform for the rest of the West Indies batting. They plundered 89 in the final 11 overs to leave Pakistan facing a tall target.Pakistan captain Sana Mir top scored with a patient 39 but with little support form her team-mates, her side never seriously challenged the West Indies total. They slid to 139 for 5 when Mir was dismissed, after which the remaining five wickets folded for 24 runs. Taylor prised out two wickets with her offspin to ensure she would get the Man of the Match award.

Spurs: Conte in the race to land Lukaku

Tottenham Hotspur are in the race to sign Romelu Lukaku in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Frederic Gounongbe, with the former footballer turned analyst stating his belief in a recent interview with RTL (via Sport Witness) that the centre-forward could simply change postcodes in London this summer, with Antonio Conte’s side looking to be the most likely destination for the 28-year-old if he were to leave Chelsea.

Earlier reports have also suggested that the Belgium international would be keen on a move to north London in order to once again link up with the 52-year-old manager, with the striker having so far struggled to find his refind his best form after returning to Stamford Bridge last summer.

Regarding Lukaku’s future, Gounongbe said: “For Lukaku, it will be either at Chelsea, with a change of system or coach – he still has five years of contract – or stay in London, but change neighbourhood and go to Tottenham.

“There is a certain Antonio Conte, and, if [Harry] Kane should leave, a place will become available, even if it will be complicated between these two clubs.”

Conte can from “dangerous” duo

While Kane’s future in north London appears to be slightly more certain following Conte’s appointment at the club last November, the England captain nevertheless continues to be linked with a move away this summer – with The Athletic recently reporting that the 28-year-old could be tempted by a move to Manchester United at the end of the current campaign.

Should this come to fruition, there would appear to be a very real possibility of Tottenham launching an offensive for the £97.5m Lukaku – a deal that could potentially see the Belgian – who Thomas Tuchel dubbed “dangerous” – link up with his former Inter Milan teammate, Lautaro Martinez, at Tottenham.

Indeed, the 24-year-old is also reported to be a target of Conte’s this summer, with €70m (58.5m) believed to be enough to prise the Argentina international away from San Siro.

And, considering the duo scored really get along” once again link up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Italian would certainly have formed an incredibly deadly attack.

Furthermore, should Spurs go on to attain their reported £160m asking price for Kane, it would appear as if Daniel Levy could quite easily afford a swoop for both players to replace the Tottenham talisman.

As such, considering all of the above, if Kane does go on to leave north London this summer, a double swoop for Lukaku and Martinez would very much appear to be an excellent way for Conte to replace the 28-year-old.

Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea (PNG) will take part in a quadrangular series as part of their preparation for the World Cricket League Division 3 tournament in January next year. The quadrangular series, which includes one-day and Twenty20 games in Port Moresby, also involves Singapore and Malaysia.”I think the event in PNG will be a great opportunity for our younger guys. A couple of the young up and coming players have been rewarded with selection and it’s a good opportunity for me to see the guys in action,” Hong Kong coach Charlie Burke said. “It will be interesting to see the attitude and preparation of the guys and it gives us a chance to see some of the fringe players who will be vying for a spot in the Asian Games team and WCL Division 3.”Burke added his team had much to improve on ahead of the tournament. “We have a lot of work to do ahead of Division 3 but we have a few guys in the UK playing club cricket and won’t be able to come on this tour, which has made me look at some of the fringe players,” Burke said. “I am trying to change the style of our play in the mean time. I have been lucky enough to see us play before so I have a bit of an idea but I have my own theories and thoughts on how to play one-day cricket.”Burke said the USA was among the teams to watch out for in the WCL Division 3 and expected a competitive tournament . “I think the USA is probably a side that certainly deserves to be in Division 3 and some people think they should be even higher. It will be really interesting to see how they go.”I think the standard of the World Cricket League has developed so much in the last couple of years. It is actually really good cricket and I think that the more and more people who understand how good the cricket is, then I think people will notice it a lot more.”Andy Bichel, the PNG National Coaching Director, said the quadrangular series was ideal preparation. “WCL Division 3 has been the focus of our preparation since I took over the role in August 2009 and tournaments such as this are a key part of that preparation. We need to play against good quality opposition on turf wickets so I’m thrilled that this series has been organised,” Bichel said.”I’m expecting our boys to be ready for the fierce competition ahead and believe that we can continue our momentum towards WCL Division 3.”PNG, Denmark, Oman and hosts Hong Kong will play in the WCL Division 3 along with USA and Italy who qualified last week in Bologna from WCL Division 4.
