Celtic pulled a blinder with Tony Watt sale

Celtic have seen numerous players leave the Parkhead club for significant amounts of money over the years such as Odsonne Edouard, Kieran Tierney and Moussa Dembele among others.

One other player that the Hoops managed to make a profit on is Tony Watt.

Having joined the club’s U20 side from Airdrie United back in 2011, the striker was sold to Belgian club Standard Liege in the 2014 summer transfer window for a fee of £1.35m according to Transfermarkt.

During his time at the Parkhead club, the Scotsman made just 34 appearances in a Celtic shirt, scoring eight goals and delivering five assists in the process.

One of the goals Watt scored came during Celtic’s infamous 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League back in 2012.

The 28-year-old only spent a few months with Liege before then having spells with numerous clubs in England, Scotland, Belgium and Russia.

Back in the previous January transfer window, the centre-forward joined Dundee United from Motherwell after scoring 19 goals in 70 appearances, in a deal worth just £107k.

This shows how much his transfer value has plummeted since leaving Celtic, who certainly pulled a blinder by cashing in on him when they did.

Since joining United, Watt has scored only once in 14 appearances across all competitions.

To highlight just how disappointing the centre-forward has been for his current club in front of goal, only four of the 13 shots at goal he’s had in the league have been on target.

Having described himself as being like a “villain” when he celebrated his goal against Motherwell back in February, the former Hoops figure also admitted to being “selfish” for moving to United in the first place.

Taking into account how Celtic have scored more goals (78) in the SPFL this season than Motherwell (38) and United (31) combined, it doesn’t seem likely that many Hoops fans will have been hoping that their club had kept hold of the well-travelled attacker.

With all of this in mind, this is a prime example of Celtic making the right decision when it comes to cashing in on one of their key players and moving on without them.

Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea prepare for WCL Division 3

Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea (PNG) will take part in a quadrangular series as part of their preparation for the World Cricket League Division 3 tournament in January next year. The quadrangular series, which includes one-day and Twenty20 games in Port Moresby, also involves Singapore and Malaysia.”I think the event in PNG will be a great opportunity for our younger guys. A couple of the young up and coming players have been rewarded with selection and it’s a good opportunity for me to see the guys in action,” Hong Kong coach Charlie Burke said. “It will be interesting to see the attitude and preparation of the guys and it gives us a chance to see some of the fringe players who will be vying for a spot in the Asian Games team and WCL Division 3.”Burke added his team had much to improve on ahead of the tournament. “We have a lot of work to do ahead of Division 3 but we have a few guys in the UK playing club cricket and won’t be able to come on this tour, which has made me look at some of the fringe players,” Burke said. “I am trying to change the style of our play in the mean time. I have been lucky enough to see us play before so I have a bit of an idea but I have my own theories and thoughts on how to play one-day cricket.”Burke said the USA was among the teams to watch out for in the WCL Division 3 and expected a competitive tournament . “I think the USA is probably a side that certainly deserves to be in Division 3 and some people think they should be even higher. It will be really interesting to see how they go.”I think the standard of the World Cricket League has developed so much in the last couple of years. It is actually really good cricket and I think that the more and more people who understand how good the cricket is, then I think people will notice it a lot more.”Andy Bichel, the PNG National Coaching Director, said the quadrangular series was ideal preparation. “WCL Division 3 has been the focus of our preparation since I took over the role in August 2009 and tournaments such as this are a key part of that preparation. We need to play against good quality opposition on turf wickets so I’m thrilled that this series has been organised,” Bichel said.”I’m expecting our boys to be ready for the fierce competition ahead and believe that we can continue our momentum towards WCL Division 3.”PNG, Denmark, Oman and hosts Hong Kong will play in the WCL Division 3 along with USA and Italy who qualified last week in Bologna from WCL Division 4.

Tottenham: Wenham’s big Doherty claim

Tottenham Hotspur ‘insider’ John Wenham expects the club to ‘get rid’ of Matt Doherty during the summer transfer window.

The lowdown

Spurs paid £15.1million to sign Doherty from Wolverhampton Wanderers ahead of the 2020/21 season.

The wing-back penned a four-year, £65,400-per-week contract on his arrival in North London.

Doherty was enjoying an extended run in the side under Antonio Conte, starting seven consecutive Premier League matches before sustaining a season-ending knee injury earlier this month.

The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick said the 30-year-old had been in ‘resurgent’ form, The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare called the injury a ‘big’ blow, and Conte himself confessed it is ‘really bad news’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

Speaking to Football Insider, Wenham predicted that Spurs will sell Doherty, whom he believes is ‘out of his depth’.

“I would still get rid of him and I think we will,” he said.

“I’m basing this on the game against Man United. He was in a run of good form and as soon as he came up against someone at a decent level he couldn’t handle it.

“We want to go back to the Champions League next season, that’s the level we need to be at.

“He wasn’t good enough for that, he was out of his depth. I think he will be moved on.

“Hopefully this run of form has done well to increase his price. There is an argument for him staying as backup but I just don’t think he’s good enough for where this club wants to be.”

The verdict

It’s true that Doherty did play in some kinder fixtures prior to his injury.

Spurs’ run included games against Leeds United, Everton, Newcastle United and Aston Villa, all of whom currently sit in the league’s bottom seven.

But is Wenham’s assessment of Doherty’s performance in the 3-2 defeat against Manchester United fair?

Well, on the one hand, he won a respectable four out of seven duels and completed 31 of the 36 passes he attempted (via SofaScore).

But on the other, it’s fair to say his offensive impact was limited, given that the Irishman failed to create a chance or find a team-mate with any of his three crosses.

Jogamos juntos no PSG.

Battling Pietersen gives England control

Pakistan’s tortured top order will have to find new levels of resolve if they want to extend this Test beyond the third day after England built a lead of 179 at Edgbaston despite a late collapse

Pakistan’s tortured top order will have to find new levels of resolve if they want to extend this Test beyond the third day after England built a lead of 179 at Edgbaston despite a late collapse. Saeed Ajmal took a career-best 5 for 82 as the hosts’ last five wickets fell for eight runs after Kevin Pietersen made a charmed 80, but James Anderson then struck early as Pakistan edged to 19 for 1.The visiting batsmen found life no easier in their second innings and Salman Butt fell to an almost unplayable delivery which seamed away late and took the outside via his pad to first slip. Azhar Ali extended his run-less streak in this game to 44 deliveries before he finally scampered a desperate single from his 13th ball to escape his pair.England thought they had removed Azhar moments before with an inside edge to the keeper but, after failing to review his caught-behind in the first innings at Trent Bridge, he was saved by the UDRS which clearly showed the ball had flicked the pad. Still, though, Azhar’s mind often looked frazzled, as when he tried to advance at Broad. Such was the stranglehold applied by the attack.Somehow, Imran Farhat survived until bad light hastened the close with five overs remaining after a severe working over from the pacemen. Anderson moved the ball both ways while Broad pitched the ball a touch fuller than usual and regularly beat the edgeEngland’s late collapse and the continued dominance of the ball increased the value of Pietersen’s battling innings and his 133-run stand with Jonathan Trott. It will go down as the ugliest effort of his career, and his 17-month wait for a hundred goes on, but he ensured the chance of a commanding lead wasn’t squandered.Having already been given two clear-cut chances yesterday Pietersen was dropped again without adding to his overnight score and it was the most embarrassing of all Pakistan’s lapses – which says something. He got an inside edge into his pad which ballooned towards gully, but Umar Amin was more interested in joining the appeal for lbw and dropped the easiest of chances.Pietersen’s innings, not for the first time, also included a dose of controversy as he left everyone diving for a copy of the Laws. The incident occurred as Mohammad Asif ran in for the fifth ball of his 12th over and he was well into his delivery stride when Pietersen began walking towards square leg. The batsman is allowed to back away if he is distracted, but Pietersen then continued to play a shot and lobbed a gentle catch to mid-off. The umpire Marais Erasmus called dead ball moments before the ball was struck, but Butt protested that it was too late.Law 23.3.b (v) states: “Either umpire shall call “dead ball” when he is satisfied that for an adequate reason the striker is not ready for the delivery of the ball and, if the ball is delivered, makes no attempt to play it.” It is that final part which raises questions about the decision although Pietersen later suggested he only played the ball because it followed him. Thankfully, though, given the heated history of England-Pakistan contests, the sting was taken out of the moment by a rain break.Pietersen tried to combat the threat of the swing from Asif and Mohammad Amir by using his feet and after lunch began to locate the middle of the bat with more frequency. He went to fifty with a well-timed flick through midwicket off Amir then took the attack to Ajmal. However, Ajmal also caused Pietersen problems and watched as an outside thudded into Zulqarnain Haider’s leg and ran away to the boundary. It was a huge deflection and a wicketkeeper isn’t expected to hold such edges, but it summed up Pietersen’s fortune. He was lucky again a short while later when a beautiful delivery from Ajmal gripped and spun between bat and pad and somehow missed the stumps.Compared to Pietersen’s rather manic display, Trott was a picture of total calmness as he went about his work in typically unfussy manner. With a better throw he could have been run out on 47, but went to a fifty on his home ground off 105 balls. Apart from a few issues picking Ajmal he was untroubled until he cut a short ball from Umar Amin to the substitute Yasir Hameed in the gully who showed how to take a catch.Amin was only in operation because Umar Gul had limped off after pulling up with a hamstring strain at the start of his 10th over which left Butt having to juggle a weakened bowling unit. He was therefore grateful for Ajmal’s spirited showing as his doosra confused the middle order. It began when Pietersen got a leading edge back to the bowler and, while it’s probably come too late to save this match, he has given Pakistan something to cling to for The Oval – which is a venue that can take turn. But despite the renewed vigour of the bowling effort, Pakistan produced further howlers in the field as Graeme Swann was twice dropped during his brief innings – firstly by Hameed at slip then by the captain himself at mid-off. Ajmal, though, didn’t miss the chance of his first five-wicket haul, but wasn’t going to risk leaving the final catch to anyone else as he safely pouched Swann’s top edge.

Croft reaches county landmark

Robert Croft created history by becoming the first player Glamorgan player to achieve the 1,000-wicket, 10,000-run double in county cricket on the second day of their County Championship clash against Leicestershire at Swansea. He becomes the ninth player in the post-war era to reach the landmark in county cricket, joining Trevor Bailey, Tony Brown, Tom Cartwright, Ray Illingworth, Derek Morgan, John Mortimore, Peter Sainsbury and Fred Titmus.Despite only 28.5 overs being possible because of rain Croft managed to get the one wicket he needed, after being stranded on 999 overnight, when he had Wayne White caught behind. That wicket helped Glamorgan to bowl Leicestershire out for 247 in their first innings with Glamorgan then reaching 45 without loss in their reply from 10.3 overs before more rain ended the day’s play with 4.3 overs remaining. The morning session was a complete wash-out with play delayed until 1.40pm. Croft was in the attack immediately but the first wicket of the day went to James Harris who removed Tom New, who was caught brilliantly by wicket-keeper Mark Wallace diving to his right. It was 25 minutes after the start of play that Croft broke through to reach the milestone when he had White was caught down the leg-side by Wallace. That prompted the crowd to give a standing ovation as club president Peter Walker and Don Shepherd, the county’s leading wicket-taker, came on to the field with champagne to toast the achievement.White’s wicket reduced Leicestershire to 242 for seven meaning the visitors had lost five wickets for the addition of 41 runs. But 10 minutes rain later stopped play with Leicestershire having reached 244 for 7 after 110 overs. When play resumed at 5pm Leicestershire lost their remaining three wickets inside 4.3 overs. Claude Henderson edged David Harrison to Jamie Dalrymple at second slip, before Dean Cosker mopped up the tail with Nadeem Malik taken at slip by Jim Allenby before Matthew Hoggard went lbw sweeping.Cosker ended with figures of 3 for 35 and Croft 3 for 54 from 33 overs. Leicestershire had managed a run rate of only 2.1 an over but that was put in to its full perspective as Glamorgan raced to 14 from the first two overs and 40 from the opening 10 with openers Mark Cosgrove and Gareth Rees looking for quick runs.

Chelsea backed to sign Declan Rice

Chelsea are the front-runners to sign West Ham midfielder Declan Rice during the summer transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Rice continues to shine

The 23-year-old is again enjoying a fantastic season for the Hammers, shining in the middle of the park and producing a string of influential performances.

Rice has started 23 out of 24 Premier League games for David Moyes’ side in 2021/22 to date, averaging 2.3 tackles and 1.8 interceptions per game.

Speculation continues to surround the England international’s future, however, as big clubs eye up a potentially huge move in the summer – it would reportedly cost £120m to lure him away.

The Latest: Worrying Chelsea claim emerges

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones, a ‘transfer insider’, claimed Chelsea are still the favourites to land Rice at the end of the season, revealing information from sources ‘that know him very well’:

“A big decision for Declan Rice, one that he wouldn’t take easily.

“I know people that know him very well, so I get quite a good inside track on where his minds at, and he’s very, very focused and determined, but there’s no doubt his head was turned when Chelsea came sniffing, and so I still say that’s his number one landing spot.”

The Verdict: Logical next move?

As painful as it is from a West Ham perspective, it is only logical that Rice could end up back at Stamford Bridge, having spent part of his youth career there and supporting the Blues growing up.

It would afford him the opportunity of staying in London and almost guarantee Champions League football, too, although a top-four finish for Moyes’ men this season could play a big part in him staying put at the London Stadium.

It is absolutely vital that the Hammers do all they can to keep hold of someone hailed as ‘exceptional’ by Pep Guardiola, but it is going to be difficult, given his ever-growing reputation.

In other news, David Moyes is reportedly targeting a West Ham signing. Find out who the player in question is here.
