Pakistan’s tortured top order will have to find new levels of resolve if they want to extend this Test beyond the third day after England built a lead of 179 at Edgbaston despite a late collapse. Saeed Ajmal took a career-best 5 for 82 as the hosts’ last five wickets fell for eight runs after Kevin Pietersen made a charmed 80, but James Anderson then struck early as Pakistan edged to 19 for 1.The visiting batsmen found life no easier in their second innings and Salman Butt fell to an almost unplayable delivery which seamed away late and took the outside via his pad to first slip. Azhar Ali extended his run-less streak in this game to 44 deliveries before he finally scampered a desperate single from his 13th ball to escape his pair.England thought they had removed Azhar moments before with an inside edge to the keeper but, after failing to review his caught-behind in the first innings at Trent Bridge, he was saved by the UDRS which clearly showed the ball had flicked the pad. Still, though, Azhar’s mind often looked frazzled, as when he tried to advance at Broad. Such was the stranglehold applied by the attack.Somehow, Imran Farhat survived until bad light hastened the close with five overs remaining after a severe working over from the pacemen. Anderson moved the ball both ways while Broad pitched the ball a touch fuller than usual and regularly beat the edgeEngland’s late collapse and the continued dominance of the ball increased the value of Pietersen’s battling innings and his 133-run stand with Jonathan Trott. It will go down as the ugliest effort of his career, and his 17-month wait for a hundred goes on, but he ensured the chance of a commanding lead wasn’t squandered.Having already been given two clear-cut chances yesterday Pietersen was dropped again without adding to his overnight score and it was the most embarrassing of all Pakistan’s lapses – which says something. He got an inside edge into his pad which ballooned towards gully, but Umar Amin was more interested in joining the appeal for lbw and dropped the easiest of chances.Pietersen’s innings, not for the first time, also included a dose of controversy as he left everyone diving for a copy of the Laws. The incident occurred as Mohammad Asif ran in for the fifth ball of his 12th over and he was well into his delivery stride when Pietersen began walking towards square leg. The batsman is allowed to back away if he is distracted, but Pietersen then continued to play a shot and lobbed a gentle catch to mid-off. The umpire Marais Erasmus called dead ball moments before the ball was struck, but Butt protested that it was too late.Law 23.3.b (v) states: “Either umpire shall call “dead ball” when he is satisfied that for an adequate reason the striker is not ready for the delivery of the ball and, if the ball is delivered, makes no attempt to play it.” It is that final part which raises questions about the decision although Pietersen later suggested he only played the ball because it followed him. Thankfully, though, given the heated history of England-Pakistan contests, the sting was taken out of the moment by a rain break.Pietersen tried to combat the threat of the swing from Asif and Mohammad Amir by using his feet and after lunch began to locate the middle of the bat with more frequency. He went to fifty with a well-timed flick through midwicket off Amir then took the attack to Ajmal. However, Ajmal also caused Pietersen problems and watched as an outside thudded into Zulqarnain Haider’s leg and ran away to the boundary. It was a huge deflection and a wicketkeeper isn’t expected to hold such edges, but it summed up Pietersen’s fortune. He was lucky again a short while later when a beautiful delivery from Ajmal gripped and spun between bat and pad and somehow missed the stumps.Compared to Pietersen’s rather manic display, Trott was a picture of total calmness as he went about his work in typically unfussy manner. With a better throw he could have been run out on 47, but went to a fifty on his home ground off 105 balls. Apart from a few issues picking Ajmal he was untroubled until he cut a short ball from Umar Amin to the substitute Yasir Hameed in the gully who showed how to take a catch.Amin was only in operation because Umar Gul had limped off after pulling up with a hamstring strain at the start of his 10th over which left Butt having to juggle a weakened bowling unit. He was therefore grateful for Ajmal’s spirited showing as his doosra confused the middle order. It began when Pietersen got a leading edge back to the bowler and, while it’s probably come too late to save this match, he has given Pakistan something to cling to for The Oval – which is a venue that can take turn. But despite the renewed vigour of the bowling effort, Pakistan produced further howlers in the field as Graeme Swann was twice dropped during his brief innings – firstly by Hameed at slip then by the captain himself at mid-off. Ajmal, though, didn’t miss the chance of his first five-wicket haul, but wasn’t going to risk leaving the final catch to anyone else as he safely pouched Swann’s top edge.

Robert Croft created history by becoming the first player Glamorgan player to achieve the 1,000-wicket, 10,000-run double in county cricket on the second day of their County Championship clash against Leicestershire at Swansea

Scorecard
Robert Croft created history by becoming the first player Glamorgan player to achieve the 1,000-wicket, 10,000-run double in county cricket on the second day of their County Championship clash against Leicestershire at Swansea. He becomes the ninth player in the post-war era to reach the landmark in county cricket, joining Trevor Bailey, Tony Brown, Tom Cartwright, Ray Illingworth, Derek Morgan, John Mortimore, Peter Sainsbury and Fred Titmus.Despite only 28.5 overs being possible because of rain Croft managed to get the one wicket he needed, after being stranded on 999 overnight, when he had Wayne White caught behind. That wicket helped Glamorgan to bowl Leicestershire out for 247 in their first innings with Glamorgan then reaching 45 without loss in their reply from 10.3 overs before more rain ended the day’s play with 4.3 overs remaining. The morning session was a complete wash-out with play delayed until 1.40pm. Croft was in the attack immediately but the first wicket of the day went to James Harris who removed Tom New, who was caught brilliantly by wicket-keeper Mark Wallace diving to his right. It was 25 minutes after the start of play that Croft broke through to reach the milestone when he had White was caught down the leg-side by Wallace. That prompted the crowd to give a standing ovation as club president Peter Walker and Don Shepherd, the county’s leading wicket-taker, came on to the field with champagne to toast the achievement.White’s wicket reduced Leicestershire to 242 for seven meaning the visitors had lost five wickets for the addition of 41 runs. But 10 minutes rain later stopped play with Leicestershire having reached 244 for 7 after 110 overs. When play resumed at 5pm Leicestershire lost their remaining three wickets inside 4.3 overs. Claude Henderson edged David Harrison to Jamie Dalrymple at second slip, before Dean Cosker mopped up the tail with Nadeem Malik taken at slip by Jim Allenby before Matthew Hoggard went lbw sweeping.Cosker ended with figures of 3 for 35 and Croft 3 for 54 from 33 overs. Leicestershire had managed a run rate of only 2.1 an over but that was put in to its full perspective as Glamorgan raced to 14 from the first two overs and 40 from the opening 10 with openers Mark Cosgrove and Gareth Rees looking for quick runs.

Giorgos Giakoumakis put in another underwhelming display despite Celtic making it 19 games unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership.
Ange Postecoglou’s side were in clinical form as they put four past Motherwell on Sunday afternoon. Tom Rogic bagged a brace on his return from injury with Liel Abada and Daizen Maeda scoring either side of that.
The Australian head coach needed goals from elsewhere on the pitch as the Greek striker struggled to have any sort of influence on the match and that was backed up by the fact that he had fewer touches of the ball (31) than goalkeeper Joe Hart (50) and even substitute Nir Bitton (43).
Even Jota, who was on the pitch for a mere 27 minutes after replacing him managed one fewer touch.
He also registered the same attempts on goal (one) and recorded more dribbles (two), making an instant and more positive impact from the bench, as per SofaScore.
The 27-year-old forward has struggled to hit the ground running at Parkhead after joining in the summer from Dutch outfit VVV-Venlo, finding the net just twice across 14 appearances, and he failed to take this rare opportunity to impress his manager.
Elsewhere on the pitch at Fir Park, Giakoumakis made just eight passes, lost possession 11 times from those 31 touches, and won just eight of his 21 duels (38%), via SofaScore.
The 6 foot 1 frontman, therefore, lost the ball once every 5.7 minutes, or once every 2.8 touches, providing to be hugely wasteful as well as ineffective.
Yes, his work rate and attitude is spot on, as seen by the fact that he pulled the defenders away beautifully for the Bhoys’ third goal but ultimately, he’s there to score goals as a striker and he’s just not doing that right now.
Once dubbed a “phenomenon” by journalist Jeroen Kapteijns, we’re yet to see anything of the sort of form from Venlo that caught Ange’s eye in the summer.
It’s easy to see why he’s not the no.1 striker in Glasgow right now.

West Ham United remain interested in signing Leeds United star Raphinha amid their failed attempted to land him in the January transfer window.
What’s the story?
Reports suggested that David Moyes’ side had tabled an offer for the Brazilian but that the Whites refused to do business.
Football Insider have now revealed that a source has confirmed the Hammers’ interest in the winger, and that the Irons have asked about his availability.
However, the report added that Leeds are now looking to tie down Raphinha to a new contract, and are confident of doing so in the next few weeks.
Would be incredible for West Ham
The Brazilian has been an absolute revelation for Marcelo Bielsa’s side since joining in a £17m deal from French outfit Stade Rennes back in the summer of 2020, enjoying a superb debut campaign in English football which saw him net six goals and provide another nine assists in the Premier League alone.
Dubbed as “star dust” and a “matchwinner” by The Athletic’s Phil Hay, his start to the current campaign has been equally impressive, notching eight goals and setting up another two in just 19 games in the top-flight – including having two goal contributions in both games against West Ham themselves.
Raphinha’s displays had Leeds team-mate Patrick Bamford hailing him after the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace last February, with the Englishman telling Sky Sports: “I think, to be honest, he has been a steal for Leeds. I am surprised. As soon as he came in, you saw him in training, you know sometimes with players whether they are good or they are top class, and he really was. He stood out straightaway.
“I am surprised that bigger teams, more established Premier League teams I should say, haven’t taken a punt on him because he really is someone special, and he is young.”
Having someone like Raphinha on one flank and Jarrod Bowen on the other would be a mouth-watering prospect for Hammers fans. They would have two quality wingers who can not only score goals, but also set up teammates too, and would go a long way to completing a dream attack for Moyes.
The £36m-rated Raphinha would be an exciting addition to this West Ham team.
Meanwhile, West Ham are also interested in this Premier League starlet…

Writing on his personal Twitter feed, journalist Matteo Moretto of Sky Sports Italia has backed a transfer development out of Tottenham Hotspur involving Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.
The Lowdown: Spurs ‘preparing’ £32m bid…
According to The Daily Mail, as Spurs close in on the signing of both Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski of Juventus, the Lilywhites are not quite done there.
[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]
Their sources claim that transfer chief Fabio Paratici could be busy long into deadline day as Tottenham apparently prepare a £32 million bid to sign Villa star Luiz.
The Brazilian is apparently attracting real interest from Tottenham as manager Antonio Conte seeks to bolster his options before the 11pm Monday deadline.
The Latest: Moretto backs development…
Taking to social media, Moretto has backed this report, simply stating ‘it is true’ that Spurs are planning to sign Luiz in this final hurdle of the transfer window.
“And it is true that Tottenham plans to try to sign Douglas Luiz, as reported by the Daily Mail,” he stated.
The Verdict: Brilliant move?
The 23-year-old would come to Spurs with plenty of plus points, and depending on Villa’s sale stance so late in January, he could be a great signing.
Journalist Gregg Evans of The Athletic (via This is Futbol) raved over Luiz back in 2020, calling him an ‘absolute star’ and a ‘joy to watch’ – perhaps highlighting just how brilliant has been for Villa since his move from Man City back in 2019.
Earning nine caps for Brazil, one of the most competitive international squads in world football, City boss Pep Guardiola has also praised the midfielder in past seasons.
The Spaniard called Luiz an ‘important player’ for Villa as well as ‘clever’ and ‘strong’ (Daily Express), with evidence seemingly piling up that he would be a brilliant 11th hour move.

Marlon Samuels ended his ban by playing for Jamaica against USA•Associated Press
Chairman of selectors, Clyde Butts, has said that Jamaica batsman Marlon Samuels, who has finished serving his two-year ban, will be considered for West Indies selection if he performs at the domestic level.”We all know Marlon Samuels can play cricket,’ Butts told . “Certainly, for a man who has been out of cricket for two years, youwould allow him to play some cricket, develop his game again and get back into form and, of course, he will be available to West Indies then.”Marlon needs to come out and start playing some cricket, [and] we will probably see that in the regional T20 and the one-day series and who knows. If Marlon certainly shows that he still has it, I think he will be considered.”Samuels returned to action recently for Jamaica, playing in a 50-overs match and two Twenty20 games against USA in Florida. He had missed two seasons after he was banned in 2008 for breaching rules, relating to “receiving money, benefit or otherreward which could bring him or the game of cricket into disrepute”. Samuels was punished by a West Indies Cricket Board disciplinary committee for discussing team information with Mukesh Kochar and later approaching him to pay a hotel bill.Samuels has played 29 Tests and 107 one-day internationals for West Indies since making his international debut against Sri Lanka in 2000.
