Kirtley ends Unicorns challenge

Scorecard
James Kirtley took four wickets in eight balls to help end a brave challenge by the Unicorns and give Sussex their second Group A win in the Clydesdale Bank 40 at Hove. The 35-year-old fast bowler did the damage in the 37th over as the Unicorns’ bid to reach a target of 256 ran out of steam. Josh Knappett hit the first ball of the over to long off, Wes Durston was caught behind off the fourth delivery, after making 51 off 53 balls, and Glenn Querl was yorked off the final ball of the over. From 207 for 4 the Unicorns collapsed to 211 all out as Rana Naved-ul-Hasanpicked up wickets with successive deliveries in the next over before Kirtley took his fourth in eight balls when he bowled Jahid Ahmed. It meant the Unicorns lost their last six wickets for four runs in 14 balls and were bowled out for 211.The Unicorns had made a blistering start to their run chase thanks to former Gloucestershire left-hander Jackson Thompson, whose 43 off 32 balls included five boundaries and three sixes. Even when he was run out by Rana’s direct hit from backward point there was no loss of momentum by the Unicorns, a team made up of the best players not in the first-class game. They were well up with an asking rate of 6.38 thanks to a stand of 53 in just under 10 overs for the third wicket between former Somerset allrounder Durston and Michael O’Shea. The brakes were initially applied by Monty Panesar, who had O’Shea smartly stumped by Andrew Hodd to claim his first one-day wicket for his new county, and then Chad Keegan, who bounced back after conceding 38 in his first four-over spell to pick up Chris Murtagh and then skipper Keith Parsons as the required run rate began to climb.Earlier, Sussex had posted 255 for 6 although a two-paced pitch never allowed their batsmen to play with too much freedom especially when the ball got soft. They got off to a brisk start as Chris Nash and Matt Prior posted 47 in the first six overs after Sussex had been put in.But Prior was caught by wicketkeeper Knappett off a top-edged drive and Sussex never regained the momentum despite good contributions from Nash and skipper Murray Goodwin. Nash hit eight fours and a six in his 81 off 77 balls and looked on course for his maiden one-day hundred when he was bowled round his legs by Querl.Goodwin passed 10,000 List A runs on his way to his 63rd one-day half century. But he fell for 56, made off 49 balls with a six and four boundaries, in the 36th over at the end of Sussex’s batting powerplay. Querl was again successful, bowling the Sussex captain as he tried to flickfine down the leg side and the Harare-born medium-pacer was the pick of theUnicorns’ attack with two for 46 from his eight overs.Former Warwickshire seamer Tom Mees also picked up two wickets. Having already snared Prior he returned at the end of the innings to pick up Keegan for a golden duck off a checked drive.Hodd (24), Michael Thornely (20) and Joe Gatting (14) all got starts without pushing on with Neil Hancock picking up two wickets at the end when Rana holed out to long on and Knappett, standing up to the medium pace, took a smart catch to remove Hodd.

West Ham fans excited by Kamara claim

A number of West Ham supporters are excited after a new report claimed the Hammers are the front-runners to sign Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara.

David Moyes is sure to be eyeing up new signings in the January transfer window, as he looks to take his squad to another level and deal with the injury issues running through the spine of his team.

West Ham look well-placed to mount a genuine top-four challenge in the Premier League this season, as well as hopefully going far in the Europa League, but they have lost both first-choice centre-backs in Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna.

One player who the Hammers are thought to be keen on signing is Kamara, with the 22-year-old impressing for Marseille this season, making 17 Ligue 1 appearances and enjoying an 89.4% pass completion rate.

According to Corriere dello Sport [via West Ham News & Views on Twitter], Moyes’ side are in pole position to sign the Frenchman on a free transfer this summer, when his current contract will expire.

West Ham fans love Kamara latest

Kamara can play as a defensive midfielder or in the heart of defence, and these West Ham fans reacted positively to the news on Twitter.

“Let’s hope this is genuinely true! Would be a superb signing and if we can agree a pre-contract before the window closes could then push for a marked down move this window. Marseille have two options: accept whatever we offer or get nothing”

Sensible Rayudu shines on big stage

Ambati Rayudu once again played a responsible knock that ensured Mumbai Indians have a competitive total despite a top-order wobble

Cricinfo staff03-Apr-2010

Ambati Rayudu’s second crucial half-century was pivotal to Mumbai’s victory•Indian Premier League

Ambati Raydu had made a spectacular IPL debut with a match-winning half-century, attesting to the popular opinion about him being a richly talented player who had hurt his India prospects by joining the unofficial Indian Cricket League. After another crucial cameo in the away victory against Delhi Daredevils, Rayudu failed to maintain the rhythm and it did not help his cause when he injured his hand in the field against Royal Challengers Bangalore and missed out on couple of matches. In his first two games after the break, Rayudu attempted the big hits early in his innings but flopped on both occasions. One of those failures had been in his comeback game against Deccan Chargers, at DY Patil last week, when he was stumped off Pragyan Ojha. Harbhajan Singh had saved Mumbai’s blushes then with a delightful cameo late in the innings. Today, when Mumbai stuttered at 62 for 3 after nine overs, Rayudu walked to crease with the team needing him to firefight again. He started steadily, never allowing panic to grip him. It helped that the oak-strong Saurabh Tiwary was his ally at the other end – the pair had already shared two big partnerships including the 110-run stand in the first game against Rajasthan Royals which helped Mumbai post their highest IPL score. As Adam Gilchrist shuffled his bowlers in the middle overs, Rayudu and Tiwary bought themselves time before opening up.With only one specialist batsman in Kieron Pollard in the dug-out, it was essential the duo split their responsibilities smartly without allowing the run-rate to dip drastically. At 24, Rayudu is four years older than Tiwary, and far more experienced, making him the senior partner. After Sachin Tendulkar’s departure, Bravo was foxed by Pragyan Ojha’s crafty left-arm spin leaving Mumbai needing Rayudu to orchestrate the fightback, with Tiwary taking the risks.Still the pressure was mounting: Mumbai were going at nine runs after the Powerplay overs but in the next six they had just scored a further 30 runs and by the end of the 16th over they had reached 125. It was the most crucial phase in the match and Rayudu adopted the simple formula the two most successful batsmen in the IPL have followed this season. Both Jacques Kallis and Tendulkar, the top two run-makers of the tournament, have built their success by pacing their innings, picking the bad balls and essentially sticking to the straight bat than trying anything fancy.Even when as he lost Tiwary in the final five overs, Rayudu did not once go for the slog or attempt anything rash; instead he relied on the bowler’s error and smartly took advantage of the yawning gaps in the deep. Full tosses and short balls found themselves being dispatched behind square on the leg side or behind deep midwicket. Twenty runs came off the penultimate over by Jaskaran Singh and Rayudu had clipped 18 of those, in the process reaching his second half-century of the tournament. From the team’s perspective the key element was Mumbai had raised a challenging total having lost their top order even before the half-way mark. Little wonder then Tendulkar pointed out the victory was only possible due to the responsible innings from Rayudu.

Celtic could strike gold with Ferhat

Celtic could strike gold in the January transfer window by completing a deal for Nimes winger Zinedine Ferhat…

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days have suggested that the 28-year-old is a target for Ange Postecoglou’s side in this January transfer window.

And now, speaking exclusively to GIVEMESPORT, Ligue 1 expert Adam White delivered his verdict on Ferhat could bring to the table.

He said: “If they’re able to get hold of him, again, they’ve got a lot of competition from a number of Ligue 1 clubs who’ve been linked with him for some time, then they should absolutely go for that if they can, because I think he’d improve their team significantly.”

Imagine him and Jota

While James Forrest has been a fabulous servant for the club with well over 400 games to his name, his performances this season have been largely underwhelming, with just three goals in 16 games in all competitions, and absolutely none whatsoever in the Scottish Premiership.

Bringing in Ferhat would give the Hoops a fresh face to play out wide, and potentially even establish a long-term partnership with Jota on the opposite flank.

As per Sofascore, the Algerian averages a whopping double the amount of dribbles per game compared to Forrest, while he also outshines the Scot by winning triple the amount of total duels won, and making more successful crosses per match too.

Meanwhile, White has previously said when Celtic’s arch-rivals Rangers were linked: “He’s a player I really like and he’s been great for Nimes. He’s a technically-gifted player who drifts in from the flank and creates. He’s good for the odd goal and from set-pieces. If Rangers were to get him it would be a coup, to be honest.”

The 6 foot star with 29 career goals and 82 career assists to his name could bring an exciting upgrade on Forrest and build a formidable partnership out wide with Jota.

Meanwhile, Anthony Joseph has dropped this Celtic transfer update…

Celtic: Jota talks at advanced stages

Celtic appear to be closing in on the permanent signing of current loanee Jota from Benfica, The Daily Record report.

The Lowdown: Jota spotted in Lisbon

Jota has recently returned to his permanent employers and was spotted at the club’s training complex to assess his hamstring injury.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 22-year-old has missed the last seven games prior to the winter break due to injury and was ordered home by Benfica’s medical staff.

Prior to his injury the versatile attacker was in fantastic form and becoming one of Ange Postecoglou’s most trusted players, providing 13 direct goal involvements in 16 starts.

Celtic have the option to make the winger’s loan move permanent for a fee of £6.5m, and it seems as if they are going to do just that going off recent reports.

The Latest: Advanced stages

According to A Bola, relayed by The Daily Record, Celtic and Benfica are now in advanced talks over a full-time transfer.

Jota, described as ‘clinical’ by Owen Hargreaves, could become the club’s third permanent attacking addition, with the Hoops already signing Daizen Maeda and close to landing teenager Johnny Kenny from Sligo Rovers in the coming days.

The Verdict: Brilliant news

The Portuguese attacker has been a revelation at Parkhead since joining in the summer, so a permanent switch should be viewed as excellent news. He was in a real purple patch in front of goal prior to his injury, racking up three goals in his last three Premiership games.

The manager is clearly a big fan too, praising the youngster not just for being ‘very talented’ but also for buying into the system, working hard and pressing from the front.

Jota is still just 22 years of age, so even though the Hoops will need to pay more than his £4.95m Transfermarkt valuation to make him a permanent Celtic player, you’d expect that his market value will surpass the £6.5m mark sooner rather than later due to his displays on the pitch.

It would be the most expensive signing of the Postecoglou era, and over time, it could be viewed as one of the most important.

Aston Villa fans react to Keinan Davis move

Aston Villa forward Keinan Davis has moved to Nottingham Forest on loan until the end of the season.

The move was officially confirmed by Villa on Saturday evening, and as to be expected, a number of supporters were quick to give their thoughts to the news.

Davis, who saw a temporary move to Stoke City fall through last summer due to injury, has played just 11 Premier League minutes this season. He will now get the chance to play regular senior football in the Championship under Steve Cooper, with Forest looking to break into the play-off picture in the second half of the campaign.

Davis will be looking to improve on his goalscoring record at the City Ground, with the 23-year-old scoring just six times in 86 appearances as a Villa player.

Here is what these Villa fans had to say in reply to the club’s Twitter confirmation of Davis’ loan switch, with many sharing positive thoughts and one feeling that it could be a ‘class’ move for the striker.

Australia aim to keep that winning feeling

Cricinfo’s preview of the 2nd ODI between Australia and West Indies at Adelaide Oval

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale08-Feb-2010Match FactsThe Australians will need to watch out for Kieron Pollard, who is in good form and knows the Adelaide Oval well•Getty Images

Tuesday, February 9, Adelaide Oval
Start time 1355 (0325 GMT)The Big PictureThe series opener wasn’t the close contest that many people expected from a West Indies outfit that challenged Australia during the Tests. The absence of Dwayne Bravo, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and others was noticeable although there were some positive signs from the young allrounder Kieron Pollard. It’s worth remembering that West Indies began their Test tour with a dismal performance at the Gabba, where they were beaten inside three days, before they lifted significantly for the rest of the series. For that to happen in the one-dayers, they need not only their captain Chris Gayle to lead from the front but also several of the newer players like Pollard, Kemar Roach and Lendl Simmons to play important roles. For Australia, the 113-run victory in Melbourne has heightened their resolve to go through the summer undefeated, an aim that Shane Watson said was laid out by Ricky Ponting at the start of the season. They believe they have worked out Gayle’s weakness – cramping him and giving him no width early in his innings – and they know he is the key to a successful West Indies. Like the visitors, Australia are without some of their best one-day players including Brett Lee and Nathan Bracken but the depth in their fast-bowling ranks has been very impressive. Ryan Harris has taken 16 wickets in four ODIs this season, Doug Bollinger has troubled Gayle and Clint McKay couldn’t even squeeze into the XI in Melbourne having been Man of the Match in the previous game.Form guide (most recent first)Australia WWWWW
West Indies LLLLL
Watch out for…Kieron Pollard knows the Adelaide Oval well. It was his home ground during December and January when he played with South Australia in the Big Bash. Pollard was the tournament’s leading run scorer and two of his best three scores came in Adelaide. He can also bowl a bit, as he showed at the MCG with 3 for 45, and his maturity impressed his captain Gayle. The more Pollard can resemble Bravo, the better the chance of a West Indies win.Questions have been raised over Michael Clarke’s value as a Twenty20 batsman but his importance to Australia’s one-day international setup is not in doubt. He may not provide Shane Watson- or Cameron White-like thrills but his anchoring role in the middle order has been one of the reasons Australia have won 21 of their past 25 ODIs. The long straight boundaries at Adelaide Oval allow him to tick the score over relatively risk-free, as he did with 80 including only three boundaries against Pakistan on Australia Day. Of the current crop of Australians, none has scored more ODI runs in Adelaide than Clarke.Team newsDeciding which bowler to leave out was more troubling for Australia’s selectors than worrying about who to include at the MCG, such has been the success of the attack this summer. McKay was desperately unlucky not to play and might miss out again given the usual reluctance to change a winning line-up, especially one that won so easily.Australia (possible) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Shaun Marsh, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Cameron White, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Nathan Hauritz, 10 Ryan Harris, 11 Doug Bollinger.Gayle was happy with his bowlers at the MCG but he was concerned by the batting. If West Indies wish to make any changes to the top order, Wavell Hinds and Brendan Nash are the two men who could come in. Nash’s game isn’t especially suited to limited-overs, so the most likely scenario would be including Hinds for his first international match since 2006, having been ineligible for the past couple of years due to signing as a Kolpak player in county cricket. Runako Morton could be vulnerable after he looked very rusty at the MCG, struggling to react quickly enough against bowling that was only mid-130kph and scratching his way to 3 from 15 balls.West Indies (possible) 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Wavell Hinds, 3 Travis Dowlin, 4 Lendl Simmons, 5 Narsingh Deonarine, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Dwayne Smith, 8 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 9 Nikita Miller, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Kemar Roach.Pitch and conditionsAustralia had no trouble posting nearly 300 in Adelaide on Australia Day and there is no reason to expect a low-scoring encounter this time. The forecast for Tuesday is for a hot and humid day with temperatures reaching 36C.Stats and trivia West Indies haven’t beaten Australia in an Adelaide ODI since 1986-87. Australia have won the three games since thenWhen Denesh Ramdin caught Michael Hussey at the MCG he became the third West Indies wicketkeeper to take 100 ODI dismissals. He got there in his 68th match, much quicker than Jeff Dujon (80 games) but slower than Ridley Jacobs (61)The Australians who triumphed at the MCG have played a combined tally of 1007 one-day internationals, nearly double the West Indies’ mark of 511 gamesQuotes “We’ll take Adelaide as Adelaide and then we’ll go from there but an unbeaten summer, that would be great.”

“We did well with the ball [in Melbourne] but my worry is always with our batting.”
