Rangers hit with Joe Aribo setback

A big Rangers setback has emerged regarding Ibrox gem Joe Aribo and his injury situation…

What’s the latest?

Journalist Andrew Dickson has revealed that the Nigeria international will miss the final of the Europa League if he is diagnosed with a concussion.

The midfielder came off injured in the first half on Thursday night after he was struck in the face by a powerful free-kick, with doubt now surrounding his availability in the coming weeks.

Dickson tweeted: “McGregor didn’t have much to do but made a crucial stop in the second half when he needed to, could do nothing about Nkunku’s glorious finish. Bassey’s now a fixture in front of him. And I hope Aribo is okay after a fair bang on the head. If it’s concussion, he misses Seville.”

The reporter has confirmed that Aribo would not be able to play in the showpiece clash in Spain, although it remains to be seen whether or not the 25-year-old was concussed.

Supporters will be gutted

Rangers supporters will surely be gutted by this claim, as it leaves a gigantic cloud of doubt over the Nigerian’s availability for the Europa League final later this month.

The midfielder has been a reliable option for Giovanni Van Bronckhorst to call upon in Europe, and the Dutch head coach will surely want him to be fit to face Eintracht Frankfurt on 18 May. Aribo has started 12 matches in this superb European run, playing 14 times in total, and has averaged an impressive SofaScore rating of 6.95 as he has chipped in with three assists.

In the Premiership, he has averaged a score of 7.09, scoring eight goals and providing five assists from midfield. He has proven that he can make a big impact in the final third with his ability on the ball, and that is why losing him for the Seville showdown would be a huge blow for the Gers.

Aribo is a consistently brilliant performer who has the potential to be a match-winner for Rangers with his contributions at the top end of the pitch, and fans will be concerned by a potential concussion to the 25-year-old, as losing his talent will weaken the squad given what he has been able to do on the pitch this season.

Hopefully he is healthy and enjoying the celebrations after the win over Leipzig, and if that is the case then the focus will turn to assess whether or not he will be able to play in the final. For now, though, the Ibrox faithful will be gutted by his knock and desperately hoping that he is cleared for action on Wednesday week.

Ishant finally makes an impact

The drama of the afternoon seemed a world away as Australia dominated most of a morning session, before Ishant stepped in

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Oct-2010

Ishant Sharma found his rhythm on the fourth morning•Associated Press

Six years ago, Australia set India 229 to win a Test match in Chennai. India knocked off 19 before stumps on the fourth day, but an overnight deluge reduced Chepauk to a swamp and deprived what would have been a capacity crowd of a nailbiting climax. At Mohali tomorrow, rain is unlikely to be a factor and this abbreviated series will almost certainly get the result that sets up the Bangalore game as a must-win for one side.Australia are clear favourites, having taken four top-order wickets. VVS Laxman, who averages nearly 50 in the team’s second innings, is struggling with back spasms and will only bat if required, while the tail will need to offer far sterner resistance than they did on the third afternoon.Successful fourth-innings chases of this magnitude are rare, and India have pulled off just two against Australia when the target has been in excess of 200. The only instance on Indian soil came as far back as 46 years ago, when sedate half-centuries from Dilip Sardesai and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, combined with a rather more brisk 30 from Chandu Borde saw them edge past a 254-run target. After some spectacular final-day collapses in the 1990s and the early part of the new millennium, India have been less of a soft touch in recent times. At Chennai in 2008, they famously chased down 387 against England after Sehwag’s blazing 83 on the fourth evening ensured that they could bat normally on the final day. As recently as August, they slumped to 62 for 4 at the P Sara Oval in Colombo before Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar and Suresh Raina saw them past 257 with a measure of comfort. The drama of the afternoon seemed a world away as Australia dominated most of a morning session in which India were as listless as they had been on the opening day. Then, with the score on 87 – Australia’s unlucky number – it all changed. It was a filthy delivery from Ishant, short and wide, but Watson, who had batted with real purpose for 56, only dragged it on.Ricky Ponting followed, essaying an equally poor pull and Ishant could have had three in the over but for a no-ball referral from Billy Bowden. Michael Clarke was walking off by the time he went up to the TV umpire, and Ishant’s emotions, after a frankly rotten match, boiled over. “When you get excited, run in really fast and are desperate for a wicket, you make these kind of mistakes,” he said after the day’s play. “But you need to control your breath and emotions and try to get a good rhythm. The seniors help when I get excited. He [Bowden] was doing his job and I was doing mine. If he’s given a no-ball, then it’s a no-ball.”Daljit Singh, the curator, suggested that the pitch played quicker on the fourth day as a result of the moisture in it having evaporated after three days of sunshine. Ishant bowled a clever short ball to nail Clarke – “I think there was more bounce compared to the first innings,” he said – and was relieved to be back among the wickets after a string of indifferent performances that he attributed to a minor tweak in his approach to the wicket.”I struggled in Sri Lanka as well because I have shortened my run-up by two steps,” he said. “It’s just two steps, but it’s taking time to find my old rhythm. I’m missing my steps a little bit. I spoke to Zak about it, and a few seniors in my team. The good thing is that I’m still bowling at the same pace that I was getting with my previous run-up.”India’s pursuit of 216 got off to the worst possible start, but having benefited from a terrible decision to get rid of Michael Hussey, the Indians weren’t about to point the finger at the officials after Gautam Gambhir whacked the ball on to his pad and watched bemused as Bowden lifted the crooked finger. “That’s part and parcel of the game,” said Ishant. “No one feels good about that but you can only control what’s in your hands.”Only Tendulkar, hero of the Chennai chase, and MS Dhoni remain of the specialist batsmen and the 161 runs needed will appear a million miles away if either is dismissed early on the final morning. Ben Hilfenhaus, who bowled a fabulous spell to send India into a tailspin before stumps, promised to put Tendulkar “under the pump” and there will be more than a few damaged cuticles in the Indian dressing room after he takes fresh guard tomorrow.”When four of your best batsmen get out, the mood is a little bit tense,” said Ishant. “But everyone is in a good frame of mind and we believe that whoever is at the crease can do a job for the team. We’ll try our level best.”

A minor boost ahead of larger challenges

“Can we start our summer now?” Michael Clarke asked the question after Australia had ended a seven-match losing streak with an eight-wicket win over a switched-off Sri Lanka at the Gabba

“Can we start our summer now?” Michael Clarke, the stand-in captain, asked the question after Australia had ended a seven-match losing streak with an eight-wicket win over a switched-off Sri Lanka at the Gabba.Australia’s international summer usually opens in Brisbane with the first Test, but this three-game one-day series was squeezed in, with organisers hoping it would spark the Ashes summer. Instead it resulted in the home side falling to three defeats in a week in front of tiny crowds, including only 9037 for the dead rubber.Clarke’s half-century to finish off the contest and strong performances from Clint McKay and Mitchell Starc improved the local moods. McKay grabbed career-best figures of 5 for 33 and Starc impressed in his second ODI with 4 for 27 as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 115.”It will kick-start our summer along nicely with the Ashes coming up, then the one-dayers before the World Cup,” McKay said. “It’s the first step in the right direction to make sure we play some good cricket all summer.”The win was Australia’s first in all forms of the game since July and McKay said it was “a bit of a relief”. “But with the belief we have in the group at the moment, we knew we weren’t too far away,” McKay said. “We had been playing good cricket at times but just hadn’t come away with the win.”Starc is only 20 but showed he was one to watch and easily out-bowled Mitchell Johnson, the side’s other left-arm fast man. “He hasn’t stopped smiling,” McKay said of Starc. “He bowled beautifully tonight and he’s a great one for the future.”There’s a lot of young quicks coming through and Mitch put his hand up tonight. He bowled with good pace and had it swinging around a bit and he’s going to be one to watch out for.”

South Africa take title with perfect record

A round-up of the action from the fifth day of the ICC Women’s Cricket Challenge

Scorecard
South Africa took the top spot in the ODI leg of the ICC Women’s Cricket Challenge, thrashing Netherlands by ten wickets at North-West University N0.2 Ground in Potchefstroom to notch up their fifth consecutive win.Netherlands, who were asked to bat, lost their openers cheaply before a 35-run stand between captain Helmien Rambaldo and Marijn Nijman promised to stabilise the innings. That, however, didn’t happen as a collective bowling effort by South Africa, led by offspinner Sunette Loubser who grabbed three wickets, cut through any resistance from the Netherlands batsmen. The progress was painstakingly slow and only one among the last six batsmen reached double-figures. Medium-pacer Marcia Letsaolo and 17-year old legspinner Dane van Niekerk took two wickets each, as Netherlands folded for 109.The South African reply was ruthless, with the openers, Shandre Fritz and Trisha Chetty, dominating the bowlers to finish the game with 32.4 overs to spare. As a result of their win, South Africa move to No.5 from No.7 in the women’s ODI rankings.
ScorecardSri Lanka prevailed over Ireland in a tense encounter at the Witrand Cricket Field in Potchefstroom, winning by two wickets to finish third in the tournament.Ireland opted to bat and their batsmen responded well, led by opener Clare Shillington who top-scored with 78. Her innings included just five fours and involved plenty of running, and her partners supported her well. Isobel Joyce and Jill Whelan were involved with Shillington in stands of 70 and 38 respectively to lay a strong platform. The Sri Lankan bowlers, however, hit back, grabbing two wickets with the score on 146 and striking steadily thereafter to restrict Ireland to 211 for 8. Seamer Chamani Seneviratna and offspinning allrounder Shashikala Siriwardene took two wickets each.Sri Lanka appeared to be in trouble in their reply, reduced to 35 for 3 at one stage, but opener Inoka Galegedara and middle-order batsman Sandamali Dolawatta put them back in contention. They first added 70 before Galegedara retired hurt and then a further 23 until she was dismissed for 50. The pair had put Sri Lanka ahead of the required rate but both fell in quick succession, Dolawatta being dismissed for 74 to make it 194 for 6. A couple more wickets followed, the eighth falling for 211 but the ninth-wicket pair held its nerve to seal victory with four overs to spare.
Scorecard
Stafanie Taylor reaffirmed her status as the best batsman in the tournament by making an 83 that set up West Indies for an easy victory over Pakistan. The win was West Indies’ fourth and secured them second spot, while Pakistan finished fourth after losing their final three matches. Taylor completed the one-day leg with 390 runs, more than double the next highest scorer.Taylor was assisted by her captain, Merissa Aguilleira, with whom she shared a 118-run stand for the third wicket. Taylor was dismissed in the 40th over, short of her third one-day century, but she had provided the platform for the rest of the West Indies batting. They plundered 89 in the final 11 overs to leave Pakistan facing a tall target.Pakistan captain Sana Mir top scored with a patient 39 but with little support form her team-mates, her side never seriously challenged the West Indies total. They slid to 139 for 5 when Mir was dismissed, after which the remaining five wickets folded for 24 runs. Taylor prised out two wickets with her offspin to ensure she would get the Man of the Match award.

Celtic pulled a blinder with Tony Watt sale

Celtic have seen numerous players leave the Parkhead club for significant amounts of money over the years such as Odsonne Edouard, Kieran Tierney and Moussa Dembele among others.

One other player that the Hoops managed to make a profit on is Tony Watt.

Having joined the club’s U20 side from Airdrie United back in 2011, the striker was sold to Belgian club Standard Liege in the 2014 summer transfer window for a fee of £1.35m according to Transfermarkt.

During his time at the Parkhead club, the Scotsman made just 34 appearances in a Celtic shirt, scoring eight goals and delivering five assists in the process.

One of the goals Watt scored came during Celtic’s infamous 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League back in 2012.

The 28-year-old only spent a few months with Liege before then having spells with numerous clubs in England, Scotland, Belgium and Russia.

Back in the previous January transfer window, the centre-forward joined Dundee United from Motherwell after scoring 19 goals in 70 appearances, in a deal worth just £107k.

This shows how much his transfer value has plummeted since leaving Celtic, who certainly pulled a blinder by cashing in on him when they did.

Since joining United, Watt has scored only once in 14 appearances across all competitions.

To highlight just how disappointing the centre-forward has been for his current club in front of goal, only four of the 13 shots at goal he’s had in the league have been on target.

Having described himself as being like a “villain” when he celebrated his goal against Motherwell back in February, the former Hoops figure also admitted to being “selfish” for moving to United in the first place.

Taking into account how Celtic have scored more goals (78) in the SPFL this season than Motherwell (38) and United (31) combined, it doesn’t seem likely that many Hoops fans will have been hoping that their club had kept hold of the well-travelled attacker.

With all of this in mind, this is a prime example of Celtic making the right decision when it comes to cashing in on one of their key players and moving on without them.
