Jogamos juntos no PSG.

West Ham face Tielemans transfer battle

West Ham are set to face ‘big competition’ in their pursuit of Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Tielemans’ contract situation

The Belgium international has entered the final 18 months of his current Leicester contract, which is set to expire at the end of June 2023.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 24-year-old has already decided that he will not extend his contract with Brendan Rodgers’ side, and an offer of a new deal has duly been rejected by the midfielder. This has sparked a frenzy in clubs’ interest of the player, who has a current market valuation of £49.5m.

The Daily Mail have reported that many elite European clubs, including the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Juventus, are all keeping close tabs on his situation.

The Latest: O’Rourke on West Ham and Tielemans

Despite such illustrious links, 90min claimed that a number of other clubs , including West Ham, are also keen to secure the Leicester man’s services.

O’Rourke weighed in on the situation, claiming that it will be a tough signing for the Hammers to pull off. Speaking to GiveMeSport, he stated: “They’ll have a big competition for Tielemans, West Ham, if they do follow up their interest in him.”

The Verdict: Would be a fantastic coup

Tielemans’ underlying statistics illustrate just how good an addition he would be for David Moyes’ side. When compared with players in the same position (via FB Ref), over the last year the midfielder has ranked in the 95th percentile for total shots, the 93rd percentile for non-penalty expected goals plus expected assisted, and the 96th percentile for shot-creating actions.

With a lack of goals a more recent issue for West Ham, the Belgian could add an attacking threat that the midfield so desperately needs, as illustrated by his 24 goals and 22 assists in 138 appearances for Leicester.

If the Irons choose to follow up their interest, the east London club can definitely expect a tough fight if they are to secure the 24-year-old’s signature, especially with him being labelled “one of Europe’s top midfielders” by Rodgers.

Chingoka justifies Howard's rejection

Peter Chingoka, chairman of the Zimbabwe Cricket Union, has justified the rejection of former Australian Prime Minister John Howard for the ICC vice-president’s post in Singapore

Peter Chingoka singled out John Howard’s lack of experience in cricket administration as the reason for his rejection•AFP

Peter Chingoka, chairman of Zimbabwe Cricket, has justified the rejection of former Australian Prime Minister John Howard for the ICC vice-president’s post, saying that Howard’s lack of experience in cricket administration led to the decision. Chingoka felt there were several other candidates in Australia and New Zealand who were more suitable for the position.Chingoka told the it “goes without saying” that whoever Australia and New Zealand choose in place of Howard as the vice-presidential nominee must be “somebody who’s come through hands-on in cricket.” The move to nominate Howard, Chingoka said, was akin to “asking me to come and edit the Melbourne without any experience in the journalism industry.”There is a lot of talent in Australia and New Zealand. I could give you at least six names from Australia who have been on the Australian board or the board of the ICC, who are very competent and would be immediately suitable, I can give you two or three names from New Zealand who would be immediately suitable.”Howard, earlier this month, had travelled to Harare and met with Chingoka to ease tensions following South Africa and Zimbabwe’s reported move to block his nomination; the meeting had been described by the Zimbabwe board as being “friendly, constructive and frank.” But when the ICC met in Singapore, six Full Member countries officially conveyed their opposition to Howard’s nomination. While Cricket Australia complained it had not been made aware of the reasons for the opposition to Howard’s nomination, Chingoka said “reasons have been given”, though “not palatable to some people.” He also dismissed the suggestion that Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe had influenced the board’s decision. “‘That is an excuse that has been used because of the denial of the reasons given [to Howard and the countries], because it’s a convenient excuse.”

Giakoumakis went missing in Celtic win

Giorgos Giakoumakis put in another underwhelming display despite Celtic making it 19 games unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership.

Ange Postecoglou’s side were in clinical form as they put four past Motherwell on Sunday afternoon. Tom Rogic bagged a brace on his return from injury with Liel Abada and Daizen Maeda scoring either side of that.

The Australian head coach needed goals from elsewhere on the pitch as the Greek striker struggled to have any sort of influence on the match and that was backed up by the fact that he had fewer touches of the ball (31) than goalkeeper Joe Hart (50) and even substitute Nir Bitton (43).

Even Jota, who was on the pitch for a mere 27 minutes after replacing him managed one fewer touch.

He also registered the same attempts on goal (one) and recorded more dribbles (two), making an instant and more positive impact from the bench, as per SofaScore.

The 27-year-old forward has struggled to hit the ground running at Parkhead after joining in the summer from Dutch outfit VVV-Venlo, finding the net just twice across 14 appearances, and he failed to take this rare opportunity to impress his manager.

Elsewhere on the pitch at Fir Park, Giakoumakis made just eight passes, lost possession 11 times from those 31 touches, and won just eight of his 21 duels (38%), via SofaScore.

The 6 foot 1 frontman, therefore, lost the ball once every 5.7 minutes, or once every 2.8 touches, providing to be hugely wasteful as well as ineffective.

Yes, his work rate and attitude is spot on, as seen by the fact that he pulled the defenders away beautifully for the Bhoys’ third goal but ultimately, he’s there to score goals as a striker and he’s just not doing that right now.

Once dubbed a “phenomenon” by journalist Jeroen Kapteijns, we’re yet to see anything of the sort of form from Venlo that caught Ange’s eye in the summer.

It’s easy to see why he’s not the no.1 striker in Glasgow right now.

Marlon Samuels ended his ban by playing for Jamaica against USA•Associated Press

Chairman of selectors, Clyde Butts, has said that Jamaica batsman Marlon Samuels, who has finished serving his two-year ban, will be considered for West Indies selection if he performs at the domestic level.”We all know Marlon Samuels can play cricket,’ Butts told . “Certainly, for a man who has been out of cricket for two years, youwould allow him to play some cricket, develop his game again and get back into form and, of course, he will be available to West Indies then.”Marlon needs to come out and start playing some cricket, [and] we will probably see that in the regional T20 and the one-day series and who knows. If Marlon certainly shows that he still has it, I think he will be considered.”Samuels returned to action recently for Jamaica, playing in a 50-overs match and two Twenty20 games against USA in Florida. He had missed two seasons after he was banned in 2008 for breaching rules, relating to “receiving money, benefit or otherreward which could bring him or the game of cricket into disrepute”. Samuels was punished by a West Indies Cricket Board disciplinary committee for discussing team information with Mukesh Kochar and later approaching him to pay a hotel bill.Samuels has played 29 Tests and 107 one-day internationals for West Indies since making his international debut against Sri Lanka in 2000.

West Ham still eyeing move for Raphinha

West Ham United remain interested in signing Leeds United star Raphinha amid their failed attempted to land him in the January transfer window.

What’s the story?

Reports suggested that David Moyes’ side had tabled an offer for the Brazilian but that the Whites refused to do business.

Football Insider have now revealed that a source has confirmed the Hammers’ interest in the winger, and that the Irons have asked about his availability.

However, the report added that Leeds are now looking to tie down Raphinha to a new contract, and are confident of doing so in the next few weeks.

Would be incredible for West Ham

The Brazilian has been an absolute revelation for Marcelo Bielsa’s side since joining in a £17m deal from French outfit Stade Rennes back in the summer of 2020, enjoying a superb debut campaign in English football which saw him net six goals and provide another nine assists in the Premier League alone.

Dubbed as “star dust” and a “matchwinner” by The Athletic’s Phil Hay, his start to the current campaign has been equally impressive, notching eight goals and setting up another two in just 19 games in the top-flight – including having two goal contributions in both games against West Ham themselves.

Raphinha’s displays had Leeds team-mate Patrick Bamford hailing him after the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace last February, with the Englishman telling Sky Sports: “I think, to be honest, he has been a steal for Leeds. I am surprised. As soon as he came in, you saw him in training, you know sometimes with players whether they are good or they are top class, and he really was. He stood out straightaway.

“I am surprised that bigger teams, more established Premier League teams I should say, haven’t taken a punt on him because he really is someone special, and he is young.”

Having someone like Raphinha on one flank and Jarrod Bowen on the other would be a mouth-watering prospect for Hammers fans. They would have two quality wingers who can not only score goals, but also set up teammates too, and would go a long way to completing a dream attack for Moyes.

The £36m-rated Raphinha would be an exciting addition to this West Ham team.

Meanwhile, West Ham are also interested in this Premier League starlet…

Sky reporter drops Luiz to Spurs claim

Writing on his personal Twitter feed, journalist Matteo Moretto of Sky Sports Italia has backed a transfer development out of Tottenham Hotspur involving Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

The Lowdown: Spurs ‘preparing’ £32m bid…

According to The Daily Mail, as Spurs close in on the signing of both Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski of Juventus, the Lilywhites are not quite done there.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Their sources claim that transfer chief Fabio Paratici could be busy long into deadline day as Tottenham apparently prepare a £32 million bid to sign Villa star Luiz.

The Brazilian is apparently attracting real interest from Tottenham as manager Antonio Conte seeks to bolster his options before the 11pm Monday deadline.

The Latest: Moretto backs development…

Taking to social media, Moretto has backed this report, simply stating ‘it is true’ that Spurs are planning to sign Luiz in this final hurdle of the transfer window.

“And it is true that Tottenham plans to try to sign Douglas Luiz, as reported by the Daily Mail,” he stated.

The Verdict: Brilliant move?

The 23-year-old would come to Spurs with plenty of plus points, and depending on Villa’s sale stance so late in January, he could be a great signing.

Journalist Gregg Evans of The Athletic (via This is Futbol) raved over Luiz back in 2020, calling him an ‘absolute star’ and a ‘joy to watch’ – perhaps highlighting just how brilliant has been for Villa since his move from Man City back in 2019.

Earning nine caps for Brazil, one of the most competitive international squads in world football, City boss Pep Guardiola has also praised the midfielder in past seasons.

The Spaniard called Luiz an ‘important player’ for Villa as well as ‘clever’ and ‘strong’ (Daily Express), with evidence seemingly piling up that he would be a brilliant 11th hour move.

Kirtley ends Unicorns challenge

Scorecard
James Kirtley took four wickets in eight balls to help end a brave challenge by the Unicorns and give Sussex their second Group A win in the Clydesdale Bank 40 at Hove. The 35-year-old fast bowler did the damage in the 37th over as the Unicorns’ bid to reach a target of 256 ran out of steam. Josh Knappett hit the first ball of the over to long off, Wes Durston was caught behind off the fourth delivery, after making 51 off 53 balls, and Glenn Querl was yorked off the final ball of the over. From 207 for 4 the Unicorns collapsed to 211 all out as Rana Naved-ul-Hasanpicked up wickets with successive deliveries in the next over before Kirtley took his fourth in eight balls when he bowled Jahid Ahmed. It meant the Unicorns lost their last six wickets for four runs in 14 balls and were bowled out for 211.The Unicorns had made a blistering start to their run chase thanks to former Gloucestershire left-hander Jackson Thompson, whose 43 off 32 balls included five boundaries and three sixes. Even when he was run out by Rana’s direct hit from backward point there was no loss of momentum by the Unicorns, a team made up of the best players not in the first-class game. They were well up with an asking rate of 6.38 thanks to a stand of 53 in just under 10 overs for the third wicket between former Somerset allrounder Durston and Michael O’Shea. The brakes were initially applied by Monty Panesar, who had O’Shea smartly stumped by Andrew Hodd to claim his first one-day wicket for his new county, and then Chad Keegan, who bounced back after conceding 38 in his first four-over spell to pick up Chris Murtagh and then skipper Keith Parsons as the required run rate began to climb.Earlier, Sussex had posted 255 for 6 although a two-paced pitch never allowed their batsmen to play with too much freedom especially when the ball got soft. They got off to a brisk start as Chris Nash and Matt Prior posted 47 in the first six overs after Sussex had been put in.But Prior was caught by wicketkeeper Knappett off a top-edged drive and Sussex never regained the momentum despite good contributions from Nash and skipper Murray Goodwin. Nash hit eight fours and a six in his 81 off 77 balls and looked on course for his maiden one-day hundred when he was bowled round his legs by Querl.Goodwin passed 10,000 List A runs on his way to his 63rd one-day half century. But he fell for 56, made off 49 balls with a six and four boundaries, in the 36th over at the end of Sussex’s batting powerplay. Querl was again successful, bowling the Sussex captain as he tried to flickfine down the leg side and the Harare-born medium-pacer was the pick of theUnicorns’ attack with two for 46 from his eight overs.Former Warwickshire seamer Tom Mees also picked up two wickets. Having already snared Prior he returned at the end of the innings to pick up Keegan for a golden duck off a checked drive.Hodd (24), Michael Thornely (20) and Joe Gatting (14) all got starts without pushing on with Neil Hancock picking up two wickets at the end when Rana holed out to long on and Knappett, standing up to the medium pace, took a smart catch to remove Hodd.
