Stunning du Plessis takes Lancashire through

Francois du Plessis played one of the most important innings of his Lancashire career, an unbeaten 113 from 75 balls that led them into a Friends Provident semi-final at the expense of defending champions Essex. A thrilling display of late hitting by du Plessis, who struck seven sixes, lifted Lancashire to 262 after a difficult start and the team then backed him up with an impressive performance in the field to win by 67 runs.du Plessis really began to open up when joined by Luke Sutton and the pair added 74 for the sixth wicket with Sutton’s contribution 17. He tore into the Essex attack and cleared the ropes on regular occasions as he raced to three figures off 71 deliveries with his second fifty needing just 19 balls. Reputation mattered for little as Danish Kaneria was given some rough treatment while Graham Napier also took some punishment in the closing overs. Lancashire hit 121 off the last 12 overs. All Lancashire’s bowlers chipped in, with Gary Keedy cleaning up the lower order to finish with four, but Sajid Mahmood was particularly impressive with the key wickets of England Twenty20 pair James Foster and Napier to take out Essex’s last realistic chance of retaining their title. However, it had been Essex, who beat Lancashire twice in the qualifying stage, that took the early honours. Their seamers kept a tight leash on Lancashire’s top order. David Masters was outstanding, completing his 10 overs for just 14 runs plus the wickets of Paul Horton and later Steven Croft. After Horton fell for a duck, Tom Smith was caught behind of Chris Wright as Lancashire struggled for momentum. The run rate was still below four-an-over when Ashwell Prince fell to Grant Flower in the 27th over, who struck again to remove Mark Chilton to leave Lancashire on 120 for 4. It was surprising that Flower only bowled three overs despite claiming two key wickets. Then du Plessis began to revive the innings with his single-handed display. Due to a tightening of Kolpak legislation, du Plessis isn’t assured of his county future because he hasn’t played international cricket, but after this display Lancashire will be trying even harder to keep him.The home side carried their impetus from the end of the innings into the field and made life tough for Essex. Alastair Cook fell early, well caught by Mahmood at mid-on, and was soon followed by Varun Chopra who was run out by none other than du Plessis. The batsmen struggled to find the boundary against a disciplined attack as the asking rate rose. Matt Walker became Keedy’s first wicket and between Mahmood’s key strikes, Flower was caught at midwicket off Smith after trying his best to hold the chase together with 44 off 57 balls. Keedy benefited from batsmen who needed swing and closed out the match when Ryan ten Doeschate was caught by Horton. The semi-final draw has given Lancashire a home match against Hampshire which means that, in theory, it could pit Andrew Flintoff against Kevin Pietersen. In reality that is highly unlikely as the semi-finals take place four days before the first Ashes Test and two days after an England XI play Warwickshire. However, it also means a return to Old Trafford for Dominic Cork and that alone will be worth watching.

Tendulkar and Dravid are T20 misfits – Buchanan

The former Australia coach, has said several senior Indian Test players are unfit for Twenty20 cricket

Buchanan: “You have to be inventive and fearless. And I don’t see those qualities as part of Sachin’s makeup at this stage of his career”•Associated Press

John Buchanan, the former Australia coach, has said India’s ‘Fab Four” batsmen – Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman – are not suited to Twenty20 cricket. Buchanan, who worked closely with several Indian players during his stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, made these and other observations in his new book, .Buchanan was otherwise in praise of Tendulkar – who has opted out of Twenty20 internationals but not the IPL. “Tendulkar has been lauded, and rightly so, as one of the very top batsmen in the history of cricket,” he wrote. “But is he an effective T20 player at this stage of his career?”In the position he plays – as an opener or No. 3 – the T20 game requires not only the finesse and skills he has, but also the power and domination, an ability to take the bowlers on while being creative. You have to be inventive and fearless. And I don’t see those qualities as part of Sachin’s makeup at this stage of his career. Sachin Tendulkar is still a great player but not in this arena of T20.”Buchanan had similar views on Tendulkar’s contemporaries, none of whom featured in the ICC World Twenty20 in England.”Homegrown heroes such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Harbhajan Singh and VVS Laxman, were expected to influence, and on some occasions single-handedly win IPL matches,” Buchanan said. “Yet their subdued performances highlight that Test match temperament does not necessarily ensure prolonged success in the T20 game.”The same could be said about Rahul Dravid. Dravid is a great representative of Indian cricket, a team man, humble, a well-spoken gentleman. But unfortunately he could not score a single run in the early rounds of the IPL, and in my opinion, is not suited to this form of the game. I am certain Dravid’s performances were also affected by the off-field drama created by his franchise owner Vijay Mallya.”His opinions weren’t restricted to India’s ageing stars. He went on to question Yuvraj Singh’s attitude, though he later clarified that there was no malice involved in his comments.”Yuvraj Singh in a sense tries to be a modern-day Sourav Ganguly, but I don’t think he has the charisma or the dignity with which Ganguly carries himself,” he said. However, Buchanan was full of praise for Ganguly, though the pair didn’t have the best of times with Kolkata during the IPL. Buchanan’s multiple-captain theory didn’t go down well with the team at the start of the tournament and a host of off-field and selection issues saw the team finish at the bottom. It also cost Buchanan his job as coach.”Ganguly was the model for the new breed of confident and combative Indian cricketers. Ganguly showed that Indian cricket could stand up for itself. He is similar in that way to Ian Chappell who stood up for what he believed and was not afraid to take on the administration.”

Leicester fans rave over Daka news

Flocking to Twitter, many Leicester City supporters have raved over some news involving their striker and summer signing Patson Daka.

The Gambian, snapped up from Red Bull Salzburg, was a man in demand over the last transfer window yet it was Leicester who managed to win the £23 million race.

Daka’s transition to the Premier League and toughest division in world football has been a steady one so far but manager Brendan Rodgers may be hopeful that he can become a clinical success over his Foxes career.

On Thursday, the 23-year-old bagged a sensational four goals in the Europa League as Leicester roared back to beat Spartak Moscow 4-3.

After a thoroughly entertaining evening of football, Leicester supporters have now raved over an announcement involving Daka as he clinches the UEL Player of the Week award.

Flocking to this announcement, many fans are thrilled and of course believe it is ‘good’ news for the player.

Everton injury news on Calvert-Lewin

Many Everton fans have been left raging over some injury news involving Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

As per the official website of the Goodison Park faithful, the striker has now suffered a setback in his rehab from an injury to his quadriceps and will remain out for a number of weeks.

He will continue to receive specialist treatment, and another fitness update will come from the Merseyside club in due course.

After the injury news on Abdoulaye Doucoure earlier on this week, to see another one of their key players out for a few weeks is certainly the last thing that the Toffees supporters wanted to hear.

Clarke aims high after 'brilliant' victory

Michael Clarke called Australia’s performance “brilliant” in the win over Pakistan in the second ODI

Michael Clarke finished the match with an unbeaten 39•Associated Press

Michael Clarke called Australia’s performance “brilliant” in the win over Pakistan in the second ODI but the stand-in captain wants more from his team when the series switches to Abu Dhabi on Monday. The five-match contest is level at 1-1 following the encounters in Dubai, where Australia hit back after their disappointing opening loss.”It was a very important game,” Clarke told AAP following the six-wicket success. “We had a really good chat after the [first] game and then the batters got together yesterday after our training just to talk about a few things and come up with a few ideas.”The meetings worked and Andrew Symonds showed he could still perform in the international arena following his suspension from the side. He picked up 2 for 12 in a couple of overs as Pakistan were restricted to 207 and then top scored with 58 in the run-chase. Clarke also chipped in with an unbeaten 39 to finish the game.Australia are touring with a new-look team, with Doug Bollinger and Ben Laughlin playing in Dubai, and are missing senior players in Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey. Despite the changes in personnel, Clarke has high expectations for the outfit.”We expect a lot as the Australian cricket team because we expect to win every single time we play,” Clarke said. “Guys have been out of the team for a long time or haven’t played much international cricket, it’s hard against very good opposition to come in and expect to do well straight away.”But that’s the standard we set, that’s why we want to be the best we can be, that’s probably why we are as good as we are. I don’t think we can look too deep into it, we played brilliantly here, it’s 1-1 in the series and we’ve still got a lot of work to do to win this series.”Younis Khan was impressed with Australia’s performance and said they remained the best team in the world, even though their current ranking is No. 3. “They have a couple of good allrounders and they still have a batsman like Symonds, now he’s in form,” he said. “So I think they’re still the best team in the world.”

-Nenhum jogo me desagradou, sinceramente. Não me apego a resultado, sim a desempenho.

Phil Hay drops Leeds update on Kalvin Phillips

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has revealed that Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips has a “chance of being fit” ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash against Southampton after providing an exciting four-word update.

What’s the story?

The midfielder was a late withdrawal from the England squad for Gareth Southgate’s side’s World Cup qualifiers, with medical staff deeming him unfit after the Whites’ 1-0 win over Watford.

And now, Hay has revealed where things stand with Phillips and whether he could make it for Saturday afternoon’s clash against the Saints.

In the full tweet, Hay said: “Bielsa speaking at his pre-Southampton presser. Bamford is out of Saturday’s game with his ankle injury. Phillips (calf) has a chance of being fit for it.”

Encouraging signs for Leeds

Last season saw the Whites struggle without their midfield lynchpin, winning just two out of nine Premier League games that he missed, and that saw Darren Bent speak about the kind of importance of the England international.

He said: “It is a unique role, and you think who else can they get in that position who can do the job effectively. The answer to that is no one. He’s that good of a player that it’s hard to replace him.”

As per WhoScored, Phillips ranks second for tackles made per game in the top-flight this season for Leeds, while unsurprisingly, he features in the top three for average passes per game – the kind of tough-tackling play-maker that the Whites rely so heavily on.

Hay’s update that the England star is in the frame for Saturday’s game against Southampton is sure to have fans buzzing, therefore, especially when you consider their side only picked up their first win of the new Premier League season just before the international break.

Meanwhile, Noel Whelan has reacted to this Phil Hay reveal…

Leeds reach "agreement" for Mateo Joseph

Leeds United have reached a “total agreement” with Espanyol starlet Mateo Joseph, but a fee remains a stumbling block for the moment.

What’s the story?

According to recent reports from The Daily Mail, Marcelo Bielsa’s side are one of a number of teams interested in signing the 17-year-old forward whose contract runs out next summer.

Now, writing on Twitter, journalist Diego Balbontin, said: “Total agreement between club and player. The @RCDEspanyol considers insufficient the (formal) offer of the English (500k/clause of 1.5m). Free in 2022. It could be free if both clubs cannot reach an agreement.”

Another Victor Orta masterclass

One of the hallmarks and successes of Leeds United’s return to the Premier League, has been the incredible work that Victor Orta has done in the transfer market in signing players for relatively cheap, and seeing them develop into top-flight stars.

The likes of Illan Meslier and Pascal Struijk in particular came in for absolute pittance at Elland Road and have more than made their investment value for money.

In the 17-year-old, Joseph it would be yet another display of smart recruitment from Orta.

The Daily Mail claimed that along with Leeds, the likes of Barcelona, Arsenal and Liverpool are all interested in Joseph and have been keeping tabs on him ahead of a potential move.

For the Whites to jump ahead of the pack and swoop in for the teenager before those big clubs could put their claws in, is another sign of the quick-thinking and organisation that Orta and his transfer team work with.

It’s the nature of the modern game and how the scouting world has improved, that very rarely do young players slip under the radar – gone are the days of someone like former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger being the first to a prodigious young talent simply because the French market had been left untapped.

Clubs, big and small, have massive recruitment teams stationed all over the world, so it requires much more work and speed of action for teams to be the first to sign the next big thing.

If the Whites can beat European heavyweights like Barcelona and Liverpool to Joseph’s signing, it would be another masterclass from Orta.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has delivered an update on Leeds United’s Elland Road plans…
