Aston Villa: Fans react to Conor Hourihane’s impending loan exit

Aston Villa midfielder Conor Hourihane is said to be close to completing a loan move to Championship outfit Sheffield United, with the Republic of Ireland international set to undergo a medical today, according to Daily Telegraph journalist Matt Law on Twitter.

On the periphery at Villa Park, the Irishman has only made a solitary appearance for his current employers this season in a 6-0 rout of League Two side Barrow in the Carabao Cup [Transfermarkt].

Unsurprisingly, the 30-year-old now looks odds-on to head out on loan for a second successive season, having spent time at Swansea during the 2020/21 campaign.

Communicating to his considerable Twitter following, Law signified that Hourihane is expected to join Sheffield United on loan subject to medical examination, describing the Irish midfielder as a “great pro” who has made some “huge contributions” at Villa Park. For instance, he was a regular in the team which won promotion back to the Premier League in 2019, only to see his minutes diminished in the top flight.

In light of this news, plenty of Aston Villa diehards took to social media to express their opinion on his impending loan exit to Yorkshire.

Replying to multiple outlets on Twitter, here is what some fans had to say about Hourihane’s situation. While some were displeased that he isn’t getting a chance under Dean Smith this term, others feel that a loan exit to the Blades would be a “great move” for him:

“Great move for him – he can make a huge difference to their jaded midfield.”

Should feel very disrespected the way he was overlooked on the weekend.”Credit: @Wanye04594011″we have to be signing a midfielder then”Credit: @j_d_richards”Would be great to move on some of the fringe players as the squad was becoming a little top heavy.. Ideally if 3 or 4 were moved on it may provide an opportunity to get in another quality midfielder to bolster the squad.”Credit: @HolteEndHerosIn other news, Aston Villa have been linked with a Premier League talent.

Palmer: Juventus move ideal for Moise Kean after Everton failure

Former Premier League star Carlton Palmer believes that Moise Kean to Juventus could work out well.

Sky Sports have reported that Juventus are close to re-signing the striker on a two-year loan deal with a commitment to sign the striker for £17m.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan with Paris Saint-Germain where he featured 19 goals for the Ligue 1 outfit.

Kean returned from his loan spell and has featured twice for Everton this season as he came off the bench against Leeds United in the Premier League, and then started the Toffees’ Carabao Cup match against Huddersfield Town.

As it looks like a move back to Juventus is on the cards for Kean, Palmer believes the move could work out well, telling Transfer Tavern: “Well, sometimes you go to a club, it doesn’t always work out. For whatever reason, it just doesn’t work out, these things happen, it doesn’t mean you’re not a good player, it doesn’t mean that you can’t go to another club and be successful.

“Just sometimes when you go to a club, it just doesn’t work out and for him, it’s just not worked out, so it’s time to move on and maybe it will work out for him at Juventus, he’s a good player.”

In his previous spell with Juventus, Kean scored 21 appearances for the Serie A outfit before making his switch to Goodison Park.

After a successful loan spell at Paris Saint-Germain where he got game time last season and scored plenty of goals, Kean will be hoping that he can replicate his form on his return to Italy and help Juventus lift some silverware.

The toss and more gloss

Cricinfo presents the plays of the day for day one of the third Test between India and Australia in Delhi

Cheeky captain
Was it a surprise that Anil Kumble won the toss? No, because he had a practice run before the actual toss. Immediately after he got the coin from Chris Broad, the match referee, Kumble flipped it only to realise mid-flight that they were not on air as yet. So Kumble caught the coin before it could land. Shrewdly he must have studied the coin’s behaviour pattern, and flipped it the next time in a way that it landed in India’s favour, and that too way off the pitch where the toss happened. Welcome back, captain.Home ground blues
A century in front of his home crowd has eluded Virender Sehwag. In his only Test at the Kotla – he was out of the side when India played Pakistan here last year – he scored 74 against Zimbabwe in 2002. Even in the three ODIs he has played here, he has managed a best of 42 against England in 2002. Today, as a result of frozen feet, he made sure he will have to wait longer to get a century on his home ground. The second ball he faced was a fast in-swinger from Brett Lee, Sehwag’s feet stayed rooted, and he played outside the line of the ball. Umpire Aleem Dar had no hesitation in sending Sehwag off. Gambhir, though, who scored 2 and 3 in his first match here – against Sri Lanka in 2005-06, brought up his hundred after tea.The upper-cut from hell
Lee, who has had an ordinary series so far, built up consistent pace today. In the first over after lunch, he dug one in short. Sachin Tendulkar, well entrenched by then, waited for it to rise, arched his back a bit to make room, and guided it over slip. The shot was delicate and breathtaking at the same time. Lee’s pace almost carried it for a six.Man of his word
“If we are behind by five overs or so, yes I won’t be giving Brett a bowl,” Ricky Ponting said at his pre-match conference. And so it happened. By drinks in the middle session, Australia had managed only 40 overs, behind by – yes – five overs. And there Ponting proved he would keep his word: he didn’t bowl Lee until the 62nd over. The corrective measure, though, didn’t prove too fruitful for Australia. From the moment Cameron White came on, Gambhir and Tendulkar ripped into him. The first ball he bowled was cut away towards point boundary, the third one was driven to extra-cover boundary. In the four overs he bowled, he visited the boundary often enough to negate his quick over-rate. In the end, by 4.30pm, the scheduled close of play, Australia had managed only 81 overs. How not to use the elbow
In the 51st over of the innings, Gambhir flicked Shane Watson to midwicket, and the bowler was not impressed. As Gambhir ran down for the first run, he saw Shane Watson gesticulating and muttering something to him. So, on his way back for the second, Gambhir apparently got his own back, thrusting his elbow into Watson’s ribs. Time for the match referee to do some overtime: mischievous captains at toss, slow over rates, and now quarrelling children to sort out.How to get to 100
Gambhir has played a lot of cricket with Sehwag, and some of it seems to have rubbed on to him. At 99, when Gambhir tried to steer Watson to the third man boundary, Michael Hussey made a diving save to keep Gambhir put. But to the next ball, the batsman stepped out, and lofted Watson over wide long-on for a six to bring up the landmark. Sehwag would have approved. At any rate, the six worked better than the elbow earlier during the day.How not to appeal
Brad Haddin was the most desperate man at the Kotla today. Twice he almost went up in appeals when the batsmen had leg-glanced off the face of the bat. The heights of desperation, though, were reached when Lee appealed for an lbw against Gambhir. Umpire Billy Bowden shook his head “no”, but the ball had already lobbed to Michael Hussey at wide third slip. Out went the lbw appeal, and in came one for a catch, Haddin looking at the umpire with his left hand pointing to Hussey. The perseverance, at least, cannot be faulted.

Shaqiri has "very difficult" decision to make - exclusive

Ex-professional footballer Nigel Jemson believes it’s a very difficult decision for Xherdan Shaqiri to make this summer, which is whether or not to leave Liverpool.

L’Equipe have previously reported that Shaqiri has agreed personal terms with Lyon but the clubs need to find an agreement on a price. Journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reported that Lyon’s offer was €6m, but Liverpool want €8m for their player.

The 29-year-old featured in 63 games in total, scoring eight goals and providing nine assists, and Jemson believes it’s a difficult decision for him to leave the club but understands due to him not featuring a lot of late.

In an exclusive interview with the Transfer Tavern, Jemson said: “I think it’s very difficult, I mean you look at Liverpool, massive, massive club.

“They’ve got a great squad together. I think that they’ve got to look at it from the players point of view, he’s not played the greatest amount of football in the last couple of years, he impressed in the Euros for Switzerland, but I think at some point, he’s going to turn around and say I need to be playing, you know, it is a short career.”

Whist it appears that Shaqiri will possibly leave Liverpool this summer, he has had a successful spell with the club, having won the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup.

Mohammad Yousuf, who is involved in arbitration proceedings with the ICL, faces a life ban if he joins the unofficial league, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has said. The , a Pakistan daily, quoted an unnamed PCB official as saying, “We have banned all our cricketers who joined the ICL and if Yousuf also plays for the unauthorised league then he will have to face the same punishment. Yousuf is still our best Test batsman and has a future with the Pakistan team, but not if he joins the ICL. It will be game over for him if he joined the rebel league.”Yousuf signed a contract with the ICL in the wake of his omission from Pakistan’s squad for the ICC World Twenty20 last year, but the PCB later convinced him to cancel his ICL contract and instead sign up for the IPL, a league approved by the national boards, as well as turn up for national duty.Subsequently the ICL had warned the various IPL franchises that they could face legal complications if they bought Yousuf in the player auctions. Yousuf was not bought by any of the IPL teams, but he was compensated by the league’s organisers, who gave him US$350,000 – his starting bid price.Pakistan’s selectors have continued to ignore Yousuf while picking Twenty20 teams, and he was left out of the provisional squad for the Canada Cup Four Nation 20/20 next month. “I just want to know what the selection procedure is,” Yousuf told the Urdu newspaper . “You go and ask great players like Wasim Akram and Inzamam-ul-Haq if I don’t deserve to play Twenty20 cricket. If they say I should be dropped then I will quit all cricket.”Yousuf felt his lack of agility on the field wasn’t enough reason for the selectors keep him out. “I just want to ask them ‘how many Jonty Rhodes are there in the Pakistan team?'” Yousuf will lead the Lahore Lions in Pakistan’s domestic Twenty20 tournament but said he has nothing to prove. “It’s not a test case for me,” he said. “After representing Pakistan for 11 years, I just want to make it clear that I am not playing to prove my abilities to anyone.”

Dalmiya elected CAB president

Jagmohan Dalmiya has been elected president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), a position from which he was unseated in December 2006 following charges of embezzlement. Dalmiya, a former president of both the ICC and the BCCI, defeated the incumbent, Prasun Mukherjee, to secure a seat on the Indian board.Dalmiya won by 71 votes to 47, an overwhelming margin for someone virtually out of cricket for the past 18 months. His supporters also swept the polls for the other positions, including those of secretary and treasurer.”Cricket in the state needs me, that’s why I’m back,” Dalmiya told the , a Kolkata-based daily. “I’ll require a couple of days to sit down with colleagues and then chalk out plans. Initially, I wanted to make a comeback so that I could emerge without a blemish, but that changed once Bengal got relegated to the Plate Division in the Ranji Trophy. Nothing personal is a priority. Today, there’s much work to do.”The election has created interest far beyond Kolkata, because of Dalmiya’s bitter and long-running rivalry with the current BCCI administration. The charges of embezzlement – relating to the 1996 World Cup, and for which he was arrested before being released on bail – were levelled by the BCCI after Sharad Pawar took over as president. Dalmiya had used his casting vote to help his nominee, Ranbir Singh Mahendra, defeat Pawar in the BCCI presidential election in 2004. On Tuesday night, Pawar said Dalmiya’s win was an “internal matter”.Mukherjee – Dalmiya’s opponent in this election – had been part of Pawar’s camp within the board. The last time the two fought each other in an election, in 2006, Mukherjee had the backing of Pawar and the state’s chief minister but lost to Dalmiya by one vote. The embezzlement charge led to Dalmiya being expelled from the BCCI and forced to resign from the CAB post, which then fell to Mukherjee.Dalmiya challenged the expulsion in the Kolkata High Court and, in July 2007, the court stayed the decision and allowed him to contest elections. The stay came too late for last year’s CAB elections but his return to the fray this year was always on the cards.Dalmiya’s campaign was helped by a general decline in Bengal cricket, of which the lowest point was the Ranji team’s relegation from the Elite group. The Mukherjee administration had also seen several glitches, the most glaring and embarrassing being during the first IPL match at Eden Gardens, when the floodlights failed. Mukherjee had suffered a personal embarrassment too several months ago when he was forced to step down as the city’s police chief following a controversial murder case.Mukherjee, however, said the result was unexpected. “The members wanted Dalmiya back and this mandate is overwhelmingly in his favour,” Mukherjee said. “I have nothing to say and I congratulate Dalmiya and wish him all the best.”But this result is unexpected for me and I have not really understood why this happened. I don’t want to go into the reasons.”Since his ouster from the CAB in 2006, Dalmiya spent time fighting various legal battles relating to cricket; apart from the embezzlement case, being heard in a Mumbai metropolitan court, he has filed perjury charges against Pawar, his successor Shashank Manohar and BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah. He has also been the subject of investigations by the state government over irregularities in his tannery business. The Dalmiya panel: Jagmohan Dalmiya (president), Biswarup Dey, Arun Mitra (joint-secretaries), Samar Kar, Shib Kumar Kalyani, Shibaji Dutta (vice-presidents), Bablu Ganguly (treasurer).
