Watson wrestles with Hughes memories

Though Shane Watson admitted to suffering flashbacks of Hughes’ death, he said he would be ready for the Adelaide Test come Tuesday

Watson keen to ‘give back’ to India as teams fine-tune

Remembering Phillip Hughes will be central to the Test match at Adelaide Oval this week, but so too will be forgetting. For as much as Australia’s cricketers want to honour Hughes’ memory through tributes and observances, they know that the moment the ball is about to be bowled, minds cannot be allowed to drift back to Macksville, St Vincent’s Hospital, nor the awful events that befell Hughes at the SCG two Tuesdays ago.Phillip Hughes tributes during the Adelaide Test

Each Australian player will wear a shirt emblazoned with Phillip Hughes’ Test cap number – 408

On the first morning, both teams will stand by a “408” painted on the outfield while a video tribute to Hughes narrated by Richie Benaud is played

There will then by a 63-second observance, not of silence, but applause

The South Australian Cricket Association’s temporary memorial to Hughes, in the Southern Plaza of the Adelaide Oval, will be maintained for the Test

newspaper in Adelaide will publish a lift-out saying “Phillip Hughes 63 not out”, for spectators to display at the match

Shane Watson was on the field for New South Wales that day, watching Hughes bat and then suddenly rushing to his aid. He and others have fought their own apprehension over three days of training in Adelaide, slowly returning to the familiar rhythms of batting and bowling, attack and defence and instinctive responses to the ball hurtling down towards them in the nets. Though he admitted to suffering flashbacks of Hughes’ death, Watson said he would be ready come Tuesday.”I’m getting there. Physically I feel ready to go,” Watson said. “There’s no doubt that mentally the last couple of days have been the most challenging of my career to be honest, after seeing what happened over the last week, trying to process everything that’s happened, being there at the SCG when it happened as well. It’s been a mentally challenging time but I’ll be ready for Tuesday. Everyone’s going through the process in their own way and everyone’s handling it as well as they possibly can.”The first couple of sessions were tough, especially the first one was really tough. A few things flooded into my head as soon as I went out to bat. I thought I’d processed quite well over the previous week. It’s been tough but it’s been a great thing to get back into the game we all love playing. We know how much Phillip and his family love the game as well. For us, to continue on with Hughes and his family’s legacy to make sure we continue to play the game we love because it’s enriched our lives so much.”Australia’s first session on Friday took place at Park 25, starting with an address from the team’s Adelaide inspiration “Nugget” Rees, before numerous training drills geared to drawing laughter as well as sweat from previously frowning faces. Net sessions have been encouragingly competitive and spiced with the sorts of bouncers that must inevitably come once the Test begins. Watson said the process of regathering trust in one’s own skills to play the game had been a central part of preparation for Tuesday.”I’ve got more comfortable with just reacting to what I see and trusting my skill,” Watson said. “That’s probably the simplest thing now … after what I experienced and the other guys experienced over the last week. I just go back to trusting my game and trusting my skill.”You know that if at any stage you get a ball, and you get unlucky, and it hits you in the wrong spot it can cause some serious damage, but that’s just part of the game – you hope your skill can get you out of trouble. I knew I had to confront it from day one when I went in at Park 25, and every day that I’ve gone in I felt more comfortable, and with one day to go I know I’ll be ready.”Australia’s hallmark last summer was aggression, whether with bat, ball or banter. Watson said the team had resolved to regain that sort of approach, and used some memories older than those of the SCG as an example of why. The 2013 India tour was among Australia’s unhappiest of all, and the players present – all but Ryan Harris, Chris Rogers, Shaun Marsh and Josh Hazlewood were part of that tour – wish to give India’s players a similarly difficult experience down under.”We’ve played our best cricket when we are aggressive. That’s ever since I’ve been involved in the Australian cricket team,” Watson said. “When we are aggressive with bat and ball, but especially with the ball as we were during the last Ashes series. That’s not going to change because that’s when we’re at our absolute best.”We know what we have to do to do well against the Indians. They hammered us in their conditions so we have a lot to give back to them in our conditions. We need to make sure we start off well in that series and stay strong to make sure they feel a similar pain as we did over in India.”As much as anything, these words suggested that once Hughes’ life is acknowledged by a 63-second ovation by players and spectators alike on Tuesday morning, battle can be resumed in the sort of willing manner commonly associated with meetings between Australia and India. Memories of Hughes will continue to flourish, but flashbacks to the SCG will be replaced by all thoughts technical, mental, and cricket.

Martin Guptill cherishes new role

After being dropped for the ODI series against Bangladesh last October, Martin Guptill is now an integral part of the New Zealand team

From being dropped for the ODI series in Bangladesh last October, Martin Guptill is now an integral part of the New Zealand team. He opened the innings in all three formats during the ongoing series against Pakistan and, in the last six months, has transitioned from being someone struggling to find a place in the team to a key cog in the set-up.Guptill began 2010 with 189 against Bangladesh in the Hamilton Test. He made 91 against them in the third ODI in Christchurch but his form fell away after that knock. He scored only 85 runs in the five-match Chappell-Hadlee series and a solitary half-century in the two Tests that followed against Australia. His form slumped further in the tri-nation tournament in Sri Lanka, where he made just 11 runs from three games, which included two ducks. He was dropped for the tour of Bangladesh and was picked in the New Zealand A squad for their trip to Zimbabwe instead.”It was extremely difficult,” Guptill told . “You feel like everything is running against you, whether it be on or off the field. You beat yourself up inside, trying to get that confidence, and it just doesn’t work. You’ve got to try and stay as confident as possible and hopefully the results come from that. I just went back and had a look at what I was doing well and what I wasn’t, and just started doing the little things right.”Guptill had a steady tour of Zimbabwe with the A team and was recalled to the Test squad for the series in India after New Zealand lost the ODIs 4-0 to Bangladesh. He did not play the first Test but got a chance at No. 3 in the second in Hyderabad, where he made 85 in his comeback innings.”The first week in India I started to get that confidence back,” Guptill said. “I think it was after the second training before the first Test, I started seeing the ball well and hitting the ball well, and from there I went to the second Test and got that 85. From there I think I’ve been on quite a high and hopefully it goes well for another couple of years.”Guptill failed to impress in the third Test against India but made 70 in the second ODI in Jaipur. He was New Zealand’s best batsman in the two-Test series against Pakistan at home that followed, making 163 runs at an average of 40.75. Guptill, who batted at No. 3 in the first Test, opened in the second in Wellington. New Zealand coach John Wright was impressed with Guptill’s opening qualities and he has now been earmarked as a regular opener in the one-day series as well leading into the World Cup.”It’s what I’m comfortable with, so at the moment I’m happy with where I’m batting, but I’m also happy to bat at No 3. I don’t find there’s too much [difference]. I’ll bat anywhere for New Zealand,” he said. The Guptill-Jesse Ryder combination that was tried in the first ODI against Pakistan in Wellington is likely to be New Zealand’s preferred combination for the World Cup. They put on 84 runs off 60 balls.”The guy’s [Ryder] a fantastic talent and hopefully he stays fit over the next couple of years so he can put some big numbers up for New Zealand. I love batting with Jesse. We give each other a bit of stick out there and just try to make batting as fun as we can.”However, Guptill, who signed to play for Derbyshire, will open with Jamie How in the third ODI against Pakistan on Saturday as a result of New Zealand’s rotation policy for the series. “It’s not really disruptive, there’s a good feeling in the camp at the moment. We’re just looking forward to getting some good weather and getting on to the park for these last four games, which are vital for us going into the World Cup.”New Zealand lead the six-match series 1-0 after the second ODI in Queenstown was washed out on Wednesday.

'Pick people who can bowl legally' – Richardson

David Richardson, the ICC’s chief executive, has clarified that the message behind the recent drive against bowlers with suspect actions is to refrain teams from picking “players who have got suspicious actions”

David Richardson said bowlers reported for suspect actions could take a cue from Harbhajan Singh’s career•BCCI

David Richardson, the ICC’s chief executive, has clarified that the message behind the recent drive against illegal bowling actions is to stop teams from picking “players who have got suspicious actions”. Richardson also lauded the efforts undertaken by India offspinner Harbhajan Singh for rectifying his action after being reported twice in his career. The issue of tackling suspect actions had come up during the ICC’s cricket committee meeting in June, when there was a general consensus among members that the methods used to detect illegal actions were imperfect.”We reached a stage where too many bowlers were starting to bend the rules,” Richardson said on the sidelines of an ICC promotional event in New Delhi. “And the cricket committee backed up by the ICC Board decided that action needed to be taken.”Having said that, I really think that bowlers that have been reported are doing the right thing by working on their actions to come back as legal bowlers. And also the message is out there loud and clear to teams that don’t mess, don’t pick players who have got suspicious actions. Pick people who can bowl legally.”The ICC’s sustained drive against suspect actions has hit the offspinners the most, with Saeed Ajmal, Sohag Gazi, Sachithra Senanayake, Prosper Utseya, Kane Williamson, all earning suspensions. Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez and Zimbabwe offspinner Malcolm Waller were recently reported for suspect actions. Ajmal has been working on his action and has undergone a few unofficial tests. Senanayake underwent an official retest of his action in Chennai last Sunday.Richardson hoped the bowlers under the scanner would take a cue from Harbhajan’s example. The Indian offspinner had been reported in November 1998 and underwent corrective work on his action in England afterwards. He was reported for a second time in December 2004 and his action while bowling the doosra was also called into question again in March 2005.”At one stage his action came under a bit of scrutiny. He did a fantastic job in adapting his action to make sure that he was now bowling legally,” he said. “And now there is no question mark about the way he bowls. I think yes the ICC has cracked down on bowlers that are extending their arm during the delivery and there is no conspiracy about the timing of it.”Harbhajan, who also attended the event, urged bowlers to adhere to the 15-degree flex limit.”Not just once, but twice I have been called. Once it was 1999 when I just started my cricket and 2006,” Harbhajan said. “So there is a limit set by the ICC and if any bowler goes beyond that limit there are people who are watching it. They are not asking anyone to stop playing cricket but all they are saying just go to the school and learn to bowl within the limits of ICC.”So I think it is great thing what you have done and, as Dave said, the doors are not closed for anyone, if you bowl within the limit you can still play cricket and enjoy bowling the doosra or whatever delivery you want to bowl. So it’s a great initiative taken by the ICC.”

‘Assimilando essas mudanças e logo todo mundo vai estar dentro desse novo esquema.
