Sensible Rayudu shines on big stage

Ambati Rayudu once again played a responsible knock that ensured Mumbai Indians have a competitive total despite a top-order wobble

Cricinfo staff03-Apr-2010

Ambati Rayudu’s second crucial half-century was pivotal to Mumbai’s victory•Indian Premier League

Ambati Raydu had made a spectacular IPL debut with a match-winning half-century, attesting to the popular opinion about him being a richly talented player who had hurt his India prospects by joining the unofficial Indian Cricket League. After another crucial cameo in the away victory against Delhi Daredevils, Rayudu failed to maintain the rhythm and it did not help his cause when he injured his hand in the field against Royal Challengers Bangalore and missed out on couple of matches. In his first two games after the break, Rayudu attempted the big hits early in his innings but flopped on both occasions. One of those failures had been in his comeback game against Deccan Chargers, at DY Patil last week, when he was stumped off Pragyan Ojha. Harbhajan Singh had saved Mumbai’s blushes then with a delightful cameo late in the innings. Today, when Mumbai stuttered at 62 for 3 after nine overs, Rayudu walked to crease with the team needing him to firefight again. He started steadily, never allowing panic to grip him. It helped that the oak-strong Saurabh Tiwary was his ally at the other end – the pair had already shared two big partnerships including the 110-run stand in the first game against Rajasthan Royals which helped Mumbai post their highest IPL score. As Adam Gilchrist shuffled his bowlers in the middle overs, Rayudu and Tiwary bought themselves time before opening up.With only one specialist batsman in Kieron Pollard in the dug-out, it was essential the duo split their responsibilities smartly without allowing the run-rate to dip drastically. At 24, Rayudu is four years older than Tiwary, and far more experienced, making him the senior partner. After Sachin Tendulkar’s departure, Bravo was foxed by Pragyan Ojha’s crafty left-arm spin leaving Mumbai needing Rayudu to orchestrate the fightback, with Tiwary taking the risks.Still the pressure was mounting: Mumbai were going at nine runs after the Powerplay overs but in the next six they had just scored a further 30 runs and by the end of the 16th over they had reached 125. It was the most crucial phase in the match and Rayudu adopted the simple formula the two most successful batsmen in the IPL have followed this season. Both Jacques Kallis and Tendulkar, the top two run-makers of the tournament, have built their success by pacing their innings, picking the bad balls and essentially sticking to the straight bat than trying anything fancy.Even when as he lost Tiwary in the final five overs, Rayudu did not once go for the slog or attempt anything rash; instead he relied on the bowler’s error and smartly took advantage of the yawning gaps in the deep. Full tosses and short balls found themselves being dispatched behind square on the leg side or behind deep midwicket. Twenty runs came off the penultimate over by Jaskaran Singh and Rayudu had clipped 18 of those, in the process reaching his second half-century of the tournament. From the team’s perspective the key element was Mumbai had raised a challenging total having lost their top order even before the half-way mark. Little wonder then Tendulkar pointed out the victory was only possible due to the responsible innings from Rayudu.

Bangladesh in dire need of spirit-lifting win

India have won the series; if Bangladesh win on Thursday it will only be a consolation victory, but this is one consolation that is much needed for both the team and its fans

Big Picture”I think if this were our second team, they would have played better cricket.” This morose statement from the Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim was echoed on the streets of Dhaka, with considerably more colour. The hosts might well deserve their fans’ admonishment, after wilting in the face of a target of 106. A series that had looked set to come alive was gift-wrapped to India in a matter of an hour or so.The Mirpur pitch had sided itself with the bowlers and accuracy proved the most vital discipline as Suresh Raina’s India defended one of the lowest totals ever. Mohit Sharma and Stuart Binny are practiced in finding a good length and sitting on it. A little nip away, a sharp jag in and some lazy shot-selection led to the hosts’ undoing. If the conditions on the eve of the third ODI remain – decidedly grey clouds and sprinkles of rain in the afternoon – both teams’ batsmen better prepare themselves for another stern examination.India’s middle order does not portray the kind of solidity it normally does. The lack of a specialist finisher also poses greater responsibility on the top order. Suresh Raina, perhaps wary of this, has assumed the mantle of the No. 5 batsman. But that has also led to his time at the crease being limited. The openers had one good game and one bad one, and Cheteshwar Pujara is yet to sink his teeth into limited-overs cricket. All is not rosy, but India have one more chance to emphasise their batting might.Sunday was scorching, yet people stood behind the lower-tier stands to catch a glimpse of the cricket – they literally stood through their team’s eighth defeat in a row. Rain spattered across the ground on Tuesday, but they would not budge and witnessed an abject surrender. It is to these people Mushfiqur apologised, but they would prefer he deliver it with a consolation win on Thursday.Form guideBangladesh: LLLLL (most recent first)

In the spotlightWhen you repeat your lowest score in history, the top order would have to take a healthy portion of the blame. Bangladesh had replaced Mominul Haque, one of the few Bangladesh batsmen with a disposition to bat long, in favour of a debutant. Tamim Iqbal and Anamul Haque contributed to their downfall more than the bowler who took their wickets. Flash has always been a trait of the hosts’ batsmen, but the time has come to display substance. On an inviting pitch, India’s quicks rallied intelligently. Outright pace is an element that eludes the team, but they made up for it with their ability to move the ball. Stuart Binny’s outrageous success would encourage both him and the management. They’ll want to keep up the pack mentality they showed on Tuesday, especially if there is not as much help on offer.Team newsAn optional training session for Bangladesh on Wednesday afternoon drew an audience. Akram Khan, the chief of the cricket operations committee, exchanged pleasantries with the coaching staff. Habibul Bashar, former captain and current selector, followed the training session and accompanied the team to the dressing room. All signs pointed to change on the horizon, both in personnel and strategy. Shamsur Rahman and Mominul had long sessions in the nets.Bangladesh (possible) 1 Shamsur Rahman/Tamim Iqbal, 2 Anamul Haque, 3 Mominul Haque, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Nasir Hossain, 7 Mahmudullah, 8 Ziaur Rahman, 9 Taskin Ahmed, 10 Mashrafe Mortaza, 11 Al-Amin HossainKedar Jadhav, Vinay Kumar, Robin Uthappa and Parvez Rasool hit the nets for India, under the watch of coach Duncan Fletcher. Considering they have the series is in the bag, India might hand out some exercise to the players who have been on the bench so far.India (possible) 1 Robin Uthappa, 2 Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Ambati Rayudu/Kedar Jadhav, 5 Suresh Raina (capt), 6 Stuart Binny 7 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 8 Akshar Patel, 10 Mohit Sharma/Vinay Kumar, 11 Umesh YadavPitch and conditionsOn the eve of the match, a brief drizzle forced the groundsmen to protect the square in the afternoon. The sky had competed with the dull grey of the covers, but as the evening wore on things got a tough brighter. The prospect of a full game, though, remains doubtful once again.Stats and trivia The only previous three-match ODI series between these teams (in 2004) finished 2-1 in favour of India. In that instance, Bangladesh had squared the series before going on to lose the decider Suresh Raina’s ODI average of 139.50 against Bangladesh is the highest for any batsman in India-Bangladesh encounters. In eight innings, he has scored 279 runs and has been dismissed only twice Taskin Ahmed was the tenth Bangladesh bowler to make his debut against India. None of the previous bowlers had taken more than one wicket in their debut game

Kirtley ends Unicorns challenge

James Kirtley took four wickets in eight balls to help end a brave challenge by the Unicorns and give Sussex their second Group A win in the Clydesdale Bank 40 at Hove

Cricinfo staff03-May-2010
Scorecard
James Kirtley took four wickets in eight balls to help end a brave challenge by the Unicorns and give Sussex their second Group A win in the Clydesdale Bank 40 at Hove. The 35-year-old fast bowler did the damage in the 37th over as the Unicorns’ bid to reach a target of 256 ran out of steam. Josh Knappett hit the first ball of the over to long off, Wes Durston was caught behind off the fourth delivery, after making 51 off 53 balls, and Glenn Querl was yorked off the final ball of the over. From 207 for 4 the Unicorns collapsed to 211 all out as Rana Naved-ul-Hasanpicked up wickets with successive deliveries in the next over before Kirtley took his fourth in eight balls when he bowled Jahid Ahmed. It meant the Unicorns lost their last six wickets for four runs in 14 balls and were bowled out for 211.The Unicorns had made a blistering start to their run chase thanks to former Gloucestershire left-hander Jackson Thompson, whose 43 off 32 balls included five boundaries and three sixes. Even when he was run out by Rana’s direct hit from backward point there was no loss of momentum by the Unicorns, a team made up of the best players not in the first-class game. They were well up with an asking rate of 6.38 thanks to a stand of 53 in just under 10 overs for the third wicket between former Somerset allrounder Durston and Michael O’Shea. The brakes were initially applied by Monty Panesar, who had O’Shea smartly stumped by Andrew Hodd to claim his first one-day wicket for his new county, and then Chad Keegan, who bounced back after conceding 38 in his first four-over spell to pick up Chris Murtagh and then skipper Keith Parsons as the required run rate began to climb.Earlier, Sussex had posted 255 for 6 although a two-paced pitch never allowed their batsmen to play with too much freedom especially when the ball got soft. They got off to a brisk start as Chris Nash and Matt Prior posted 47 in the first six overs after Sussex had been put in.But Prior was caught by wicketkeeper Knappett off a top-edged drive and Sussex never regained the momentum despite good contributions from Nash and skipper Murray Goodwin. Nash hit eight fours and a six in his 81 off 77 balls and looked on course for his maiden one-day hundred when he was bowled round his legs by Querl.Goodwin passed 10,000 List A runs on his way to his 63rd one-day half century. But he fell for 56, made off 49 balls with a six and four boundaries, in the 36th over at the end of Sussex’s batting powerplay. Querl was again successful, bowling the Sussex captain as he tried to flickfine down the leg side and the Harare-born medium-pacer was the pick of theUnicorns’ attack with two for 46 from his eight overs.Former Warwickshire seamer Tom Mees also picked up two wickets. Having already snared Prior he returned at the end of the innings to pick up Keegan for a golden duck off a checked drive.Hodd (24), Michael Thornely (20) and Joe Gatting (14) all got starts without pushing on with Neil Hancock picking up two wickets at the end when Rana holed out to long on and Knappett, standing up to the medium pace, took a smart catch to remove Hodd.

West Ham fans excited by Kamara claim

A number of West Ham supporters are excited after a new report claimed the Hammers are the front-runners to sign Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara.

David Moyes is sure to be eyeing up new signings in the January transfer window, as he looks to take his squad to another level and deal with the injury issues running through the spine of his team.

West Ham look well-placed to mount a genuine top-four challenge in the Premier League this season, as well as hopefully going far in the Europa League, but they have lost both first-choice centre-backs in Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna.

One player who the Hammers are thought to be keen on signing is Kamara, with the 22-year-old impressing for Marseille this season, making 17 Ligue 1 appearances and enjoying an 89.4% pass completion rate.

According to Corriere dello Sport [via West Ham News & Views on Twitter], Moyes’ side are in pole position to sign the Frenchman on a free transfer this summer, when his current contract will expire.

West Ham fans love Kamara latest

Kamara can play as a defensive midfielder or in the heart of defence, and these West Ham fans reacted positively to the news on Twitter.

“Let’s hope this is genuinely true! Would be a superb signing and if we can agree a pre-contract before the window closes could then push for a marked down move this window. Marseille have two options: accept whatever we offer or get nothing”

Sussex 'hurt' by fixing revelations

Sussex have made clear their shock and anger at the revelations of alleged match-fixing involving former players Lou Vincent and Naveed Arif, who were last week charged with corruption by the ECB

Sussex have made clear their shock and anger at the revelations of alleged match-fixing involving former players Lou Vincent and Naved Arif, who were last week charged with corruption by the ECB. Mark Robinson, Sussex’s head coach, said the thought of individuals working against the aims of the team “sickens and disgusts us”, although he welcomed the news coming into the public domain, saying “hopefully the truth has been discovered”.Ed Joyce, the club captain, was also present for a news conference at the Merchant Taylors’ School, where Sussex are playing Middlesex in the Championship. He described the anger felt by the players, who only learned of the allegations when they began to be reported in recent weeks, ahead of a formal announcement by the ECB’s anti-corruption unit.Vincent and Arif have been charged with a range of offences relating to a 40-over fixture with Kent in 2011, while Vincent faces further charges over a T20 match against Lancashire, both games that Sussex lost. They are the second county to face such an investigation, after the spot-fixing case involving Essex’s Mervyn Westfield and Danish Kaneria, and Joyce said that the atmosphere of suspicion had spurred the club to speak publicly following a meeting between players and management.”There’s a lot of anger in the dressing room,” he said. “That question about whether Sussex has a problem – that’s the problem when you get a couple of alleged bad apples in your team and people start questioning things that you do. On Sunday morning, there was a huge amount of anger there because everything we do as a cricket team is all about winning games. To think that there could be people in your midst who are doing everything they can to not do that is the worst thing you can do to a professional sports team.”Joyce, who played in both matches, said the issue was a global one and that, while plenty of advice was now provided to players about how to report approaches, there was also a moral element to those involved with the game shutting down fixing.”It should be in most people’s DNA from a young age,” he said. “I think people know when they’re doing the wrong thing, I don’t think you necessarily need someone to tell you that. What’s good is having the education to know when something might be coming on the horizon that you don’t recognise at the time. There’s great education in place from the ECB and ICC … so everybody knows.”Sussex’s chairman, Jim May, read out a letter that has been sent to all members, outlining the steps taken in conjunction with the ECB and ICC to establish the facts. With the proceedings against Vincent and Arif ongoing, he was unable to address specifics of the case but said the club had been working with the authorities for some time.In a separate, prepared statement, Robinson said: “We are all deeply shocked by the recent allegations made against games involving Sussex. The players’ ethos is built on a will to win, with the togetherness that means everybody has to drive to the same goals. The thought that anybody amongst us, at any time, may have been working against that aim sickens and disgusts us. We hope that with increased awareness and education, these alleged events will stay as a thing of the past.”Robinson also praised the work of the ECB’s anti-corruption officials and said it was important that details of any alleged wrongdoing were brought to light.”You play, you turn up and take as read that what you’re seeing is right. Then you find out that maybe it wasn’t the case – that’s devastating,” he said. “We’ve got a dressing room, a club that’s hurting. We’d rather these things did come out because you don’t want things underneath, not knowing. The ECB’s anti-corruption team have done brilliantly to get to this point. We’ve come together, it’ll make us stronger and we’ll move on but at the moment there’s a bit of hurt.”Things are coming out, which is a good thing. You don’t want things hidden – we want to know the truth. This isn’t a Sussex thing, this is world cricket, so whatever’s out there, I hope it gets discovered. The things that are in place, should lessen the chances of it happening again but that’s the one good thing for me on this one, that hopefully the truth has been discovered.”The irony of the situation, as May pointed out, is that Sussex have been one of the more successful teams in the country over recent years, twice winning the Championship under Robinson, along with several limited-overs trophies. Zac Toumazi, who took over as the club’s chief executive in 2013, denied that the problem was specific to Sussex. “This is an issue around two individuals, rather than a county issue,” he said.Toumazi said that the club’s sponsors continued to support Sussex and pointed to developments, such as the addition of anti-corruption clauses to player contracts, as proof that fixing was being taken seriously. Sussex will hold a members’ forum on June 2, during the Championship match against Nottinghamshire, to further address supporter concerns.
