No secret to ending choke jokes for SA

After 22 years, six World Cups, four World T20s and an uncountable number of jokes about the choke, South Africa have stopped searching for an elixir

Strike bowler: Faf du Plessis wants Imran Tahir to only concern himself with taking wickets•AFP

After 22 years, six World Cups, four World T20s and an uncountable number of jokes about the choke, South Africa have stopped searching for an elixir. They have decided the way to approach major tournaments is with the best team they can muster and an understanding of the basic principles of winning and losing.”There’s nothing magical that you can do to win a World Cup,” Faf du Plessis said at the team’s arrival in Bangladesh. “It’s a tournament where you need guys in form and if you have that, you give yourselves a great opportunity to compete. If you can play good cricket during the build up and get to the semis, once you are there, it’s just about playing the game. There is nothing different about it. If you don’t play to your full potential you are going to get beaten.”Simple.Or not.For a start South Africa have not played enough T20 cricket to know who is in form and who is not. Only one match in their three-game series against Australia took place in full. Another was washed out and a third condensed to a seven-over shootout. “I would have liked to have played some more T20 cricket,” du Plessis admitted. Chances are, apart from West Indies and England, every other team feels the same way. What South Africa do have is a relatively recent strong record on the subcontinent. Last August they beat Sri Lanka in a T20 series on the island and last November they were victorious over Pakistan in the UAE. Both teams had players with the kind of magic fingers that du Plessis thinks will decide this tournament: spinners. That South Africa were successful is a tick in the form column for du Plessis. “We’ve proven that we can play in these conditions against quality spin,” he said. “This tournament is going to be won and lost with spinners.”What South Africa do not have is a reputation for being blessed with exactly that: spinners. But stereotypes date and South African cupboard has started to fill-up in that department. They have three spinners in their squad this time, each offering something different. The legspinner, Imran Tahir, is the player du Plessis thinks will make the biggest impact and the captain has given him a licence to kill. “He is a guy who takes wickets. It’s not required of him to go at two, three or four runs an over. He gets wickets,” he said. “Also, we’ve got JP Duminy who has been bowling very well as a back-up spinner.”Duminy’s part-time offspin is fast becoming not so part-time and he has proved an important partnership breaker in the last few months. Left-armer Aaron Phangiso did not get a mention from du Plessis but he is also in the squad, giving South Africa the kind of options teams want when they head into a competition.Having a slew of spinners alone is not going to win anyone anything, so du Plessis was quick to point out South Africa also have all the other departments covered. “When it comes to Bangladesh, it’s not always just spin. The conditions allow for fast bowling as well and we’ve got a really good bowling attack when it comes to the fast bowlers.”In our whole batting line-up, we’ve got destructive hitters. AB de Villiers has proven so many times how destructive he can be. So has David Miller. And then other guys, like Hashim Amla he goes under the radar but he is a high quality batsman. We’ve got a long batting line-up.”South Africa have got “ourselves covered,” just as they have had in the past. The only thing missing is the amnesia to forget the dreaded c-word that keeps popping up and will pop up throughout South Africa’s stay at in the tournament and be brought out no matter how far they get.Du Plessis says they do not need it. He may be right given how captains of the past of dealt with it. Graeme Smith turned it into an expletive of sorts, bristling every time the first syllable was mentioned and glaring so hard at the utterer the person was likely to choke before the whole word came out. That did not work. De Villiers tried reverse psychology with it by embracing the word and saying it as many times in one sentence as he could. That also did not work.So du Plessis is treating it like any other word. The same as win, lose, champions and losers. All of them are loaded with connotations but du Plessis wants to see only the logic hidden underneath. “You can look at it any way you want but for me, we need to be playing our best cricket. If we arrive on the day and we don’t we should get beaten and that goes for every team,” he said.”When it comes to choking, for me it’s simple. You need to make sure you give yourself the best opportunity to do well and if you don’t and you get beaten on the day, as long as the other team played better cricket, I can accept that.” If that happens, he’ll hope the rest of South Africa can too.

Sri Lanka fightback impresses coach

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews called Perera’s match-changing 80 not out “absolutely brilliant” and praised Perera’s all-round abilities

SL coach: Holding nerves, a bit of luck – there are small margins in international cricket•AFP

Paul Farbrace, the Sri Lanka coach, was impressed with his team’s ability to maintain emotional equilibrium that helped them edge past a belligerent Bangladesh team in a see-saw contest in Mirpur. Twice, on Monday, Sri Lanka fought back from difficult positions and ended up with a 13-run win in the first ODI.”A lot of time is spent on talking about holding nerves,” Farbrace said. “You should not get too excited when you’re doing well, and don’t get too down when you are not going well. You also need a bit of luck to go your way. There are small margins in international cricket.”Sri Lanka first staged a comeback, mainly through Thisara Perera’s big hitting, from a wobbly 67 for 8. And then when Bangladesh had been on cruise control at 114 for two, their bowlers picked up the last eight wickets for only 53 runs.”The great thing was that from 100-odd for two, I was very impressed how the boys fought, stuck at it, caught well and were disciplined in their bowling,” Farbrace said. “The pressure forced the victory. There’s quality in our batting too and it is not a time to panic. The boys are working hard in every session. We can ask the players to work as hard they can and if they don’t, then you get tough on them.”Perera survived three dropped catches while Sachithra Senanayake, with whom he added 82 for the ninth wicket, was dropped once. Later, Shamsur Rahman suffered a freakish run-out, which turned the tide Sri Lanka’s way.But still, there were concerns about batting, especially after collapses in two consecutive matches. Farbrace, though, was unconcerned about the lack of runs from Sri Lanka’s batsmen, and Dinesh Chandimal in particular. Chandimal scored a Test century but has now had three failures in a row.”He [Dinesh Chandimal] showed glimpses of striking the ball well,” Farbrace said. “He got a hundred in a Test match four innings ago. He scored five boundaries in that innings, which shows he is maturing as a player.”He knocked the ball around and his partnership with Sangakkara got us in a position from where we couldn’t lose a Test match.”Farbrace said the young batsmen, especially those who have to replace legendary names and careers, need a bit of time in international cricket to adjust their games to the team’s needs.”It is a bit like when Murali and Vaas were no longer in the bowling attack,” he said. “It takes a while for the younger players. The previous coach Graham Ford said that all the time Mahela and Kumar Sangakkara are batting at 3 and 4, the likes of Chandimal and Mathews are batting at 5 and 6. Batting at 3-4 and 5-6 are different, you need time to adjust.”They are intelligent lads. Kithuruwan Vithanage took the chance and scored a hundred in Dhaka. You have to give people time. Young guys don’t become Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara overnight. You will never find another Murali, Vaas or Sanath. Young players take time to learn pressure of international cricket.”

Pattinson takes heart from Johnson, Harris comebacks

James Pattinson, who has been injured with a stress fracture, said that watching the likes of Ryan Harris and Mitchell Johnson come back from similar lay-offs, has given him the belief to bounce back

Pattinson delighted to be back

If there was one thing that cut through the frustration for James Pattinson as he sat at home watching his team-mates complete a 5-0 Ashes sweep, it was seeing fast bowlers like himself bounce back from injuries to bury England. A stress fracture of the back ruled Pattinson out of the series and he has now played only 12 of a possible 29 Tests since his debut, but Ryan Harris and Mitchell Johnson have endured similar lay-offs over the years.”It’s difficult when you want to be playing out there and you’ve had a taste of playing Test cricket and realising how good it is and how much you miss it when you’re not there,” Pattinson said on Monday. “But seeing the boys and how they went about it, you can learn a lot from that.”Especially from two guys who have been through tough stuff with injuries, Mitch and Rhino, who is almost at his peak at 34. It holds me in good belief that I’m almost 10 or 12 years away from there. I know it’s going to be a long road, a tough road, but I’m looking forward to it.”That road begins with Australia’s tour of South Africa next month, after Pattinson, 23, was named in the 15-man squad for the three Tests. Pattinson and Jackson Bird were preferred to Nathan Coulter-Nile as the backups to the pace-bowling unit of Johnson, Harris and Peter Siddle, and the allrounder James Faulkner. However, Pattinson will face a challenge to build up his workload to Test levels, given that he has not played a first-class match since the Lord’s Test in July. Four BBL matches for the Melbourne Renegades and a return to the one-day international side in Sydney on Sunday have given Pattinson some sort of bowling practice, but he knows that plenty of work remains to return to his best.”It’s hard to find your straps straight away,” he said. “I was quite lucky to get a few wickets with the Renegades early and helped my confidence a little bit. I bowled some good balls yesterday but there was a few bad balls in there, a few boundary balls. Once I get back playing continuous cricket and training, the more I’ll bowl and the better I’ll feel and the more consistent I’ll get with my bowling.”Pattinson has been bowling up to 12 overs in the nets to build up his workload, and there is also the warm-up match in Potchefstroom ahead of the first Test in Centurion to get back into red-ball cricket. However, the presence of Harris, Johnson and Siddle in the attack means that his chances of a call-up will more arise through injury, but whatever the case he knows that the pitches in South Africa could make the job a little easier.”I think the wickets over there help a little bit,” he said. “They’re as quick if not quicker over there in South Africa. It’s a scary thought for the batsmen, knowing you’ve got Mitch, Rhino and Sidds in one team and then Steyn, Morkel and Philander in the other team.”It’s a tough challenge and the batsmen are going to have to be on their game and the same with the bowlers. There’s big expectation on the bowlers to go over there and perform because there’s been so much talk. I think our bowling attack is suited to that.”

Man Utd predicted XI to face Villarreal

Manchester United take on take on Villarreal in the Champions League this evening in what’s set to be their first encounter since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal.

Securing all three points would be enough to send the Red Devils through to the knockout stages of Europe’s elite cup competition, but interim manager Michael Carrick will have a tricky task on his hands.

Mason Greenwood has tested positive for the pandemic and is set to play no part in this midweek clash, while long-term absentees Raphael Varane and Paul Pogba will once again be sidelined.

Joining them on the treatment table could be Edinson Cavani and Luke Shaw, with the pair believed to be doubts ahead of the tip to the Estadio de la Cerámica.

That means Carrick may have to shuffle his pack slightly, although following the 4-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Watford last time out, he perhaps would have done so regardless.

With that in mind, here’s how Football FanCast expects the former United and England midfielder to line up in Spain…

David de Gea will keep his place in goal despite conceding four over the weekend, but he’ll be keen to impress the new man in the dugout and maintain his No.1 status.

Ahead of the Spanish shot-stopper is set to be a back four made up Alex Telles, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka due to United’s fitness woes, and Carrick will be hoping for a much-improved showing from his defensive unit.

The engine room could have a fresh face as well, with forgotten man Donny van de Beek coming into the starting lineup at the expense of the £7.2m-rated Nemanja Matic who deserves to be axed. The Dutchman will be one of three changes to the side.

He should partner Fred at the base of midfield, providing a solid foundation for Bruno Fernandes to attack from just ahead of the more defensive-minded duo.

An exciting front three of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo could complete the starting XI as United go in search of a first post-Solskjaer victory and qualification from Group F.

And, in other news…Carrick could become an instant hit at Man Utd by ruthlessly axing £120k-p/w “problem”
