No limite!

BCCI backs players on anti-doping

The BCCI has asked the ICC to renegotiate the ‘whereabouts’ clause in the anti-doping code with the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA)

Cricinfo staff02-Aug-2009

Players like MS Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh maintained that security concerns remained if they had to reveal their location in advance•Associated Press

The Indian board has backed its players and rejected the contentious ‘whereabouts’ clause in the amended World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) code, which was implemented by the ICC from January 1, as it was “unreasonable”. This decision was taken at a meeting of the BCCI’s working committee in Mumbai on Sunday and places the ICC in a difficult position. The ICC’s executive board, of which India is a member, will now discuss the issue to find a way forward. A resolution would ideally have to be reached before the start of the next ICC event, the Champions Trophy in September in South Africa, where India is one of the eight participating teams. International players from all countries in the ICC’s anti-dope testing pool have agreed to abide by the code, despite privacy and practicality concerns about the ‘whereabouts’ clause, except the 11 from India. The code prescribes stringent penalties in case of default (see box).MS Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh, who were present at the BCCI meeting, maintained that security concerns remained if they had to reveal their location in advance for an hour every day for the next three months to facilitate out-of-competition testing, as mandated by the ‘whereabouts’ norm in the amended WADA code.In response to these concerns that were expressed earlier too, the ICC had promised to implement a “reasonable” testing programme that will be conducted around matches, and not on holidays or when players are on vacation. The ICC had also sent its company lawyer to address the BCCI’s concerns on the WADA system during the Sunday meeting. But an Indian board official told Cricinfo that Iain Higgins, the lawyer, was not called upon at all by the BCCI’s working committee.Shashank Manohar, the BCCI president, said the board did not have a problem with dope testing but only with the system of keeping checks when the players are not engaged in training camps or playing matches. Manohar said the BCCI would suggest to the ICC that instead of players revealing their whereabouts information in advance, the governing body should consult the Indian board which will ensure that the player will be available within 24 hours at the required location for testing. The suggestion, however, is unlikely to lead to a solution as the WADA, which is an independent anti-doping watchdog set up by the International Olympic Committee, has made it clear in a recent statement that no exemption to the code will be granted to any federation. If the Indian board refuses to budge on the issue, the ICC will have to consider pulling out of the WADA umbrella, which will undermine its fight to ensure a clean sport, its credibility and reputation on the world stage, and rule out cricket from global multi-sport events such as Asian Games and Olympics.”We believe the clause with regard to whereabouts of cricketers is unreasonable for three reasons,” Manohar said. “Firstly, some Indian cricketers have security cover, and when you have a security cover, you cannot disclose your whereabouts to a third person. Secondly, the privacy of individuals cannot be invaded. Third, the constitution of India gives a guarantee to every citizen regarding his privacy which cannot be invaded. We can appreciate players being tested even when they are not playing. But if ICC or WADA want to test the players, they can inform the board which will get the players at the required location within 24 hours. This is our suggestion.”Manohar claimed that though the anti-doping code has been in discussion since 2006, when the ICC became a WADA signatory, and the amended version was approved by the ICC board last year, the testing system, including the whereabouts clause, was never deliberated upon in any of the governing body’s meetings.Asked what the ICC would do next, Manohar, who represents India on the governing body’s board, said, “The implications of this decision would be decided after we write to the ICC. Today, it would be jumping the gun.”Brian Murgatroyd, the ICC spokesperson, said the ICC and BCCI were committed to finding a practical solution. “We are aware of the issues of concerns, and we are confident they can be adhered to everyone’s satisfaction. The matter will now be considered by ICC board,” he said. The WADA penaltyThe ICC’s new WADA code requires players to inform ICC 90 days in advance (each quarter) a location and time that they will be available each day in that quarter for testing. If the player is not in the location at the time specified, he/she will have a strike recorded against his name. Three such strikes and the player will have breached the code and can face penalties up to a two-year ban.The Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA), of which India is not a member, has warned that if the ICC did not penalise India’s players for failing to submit to the new anti-doping norms in time, it would ensure that players from all other countries would be relieved from similar obligations.Concerns about the ‘whereabouts’ clause in the amended WADA code is not a cricket-specific issue and has been treated as a matter of concern in other sports, particularly team sports such as football. FIFA, football’s governing body, is still not completely WADA-compliant due to similar concerns and has suggested that only players they deem as high-risk be included in the testing pool. Tennis stars such as Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams have also spoken out against revealing whereabouts information in advance. There is a meeting of world player associations, including FICA, in London in early September with WADA to discuss these concerns. The ICC will also raise these concerns with WADA at a review meeting this year-end.Another Indian board official said after Sunday’s meeting that the ICC will have to renegotiate the issue with WADA. “The ICC have to take up a dialogue with WADA,” Rajiv Shukla, a BCCI vice-president, said. “Football players also declined to sign the clause and the FIFA is engaged in negotiation with WADA, so that would be the case of ICC also,” Shukla said.

Always under pressure when I play for SL – Prasanna

Returning to a team full of wicketkeeper-batsmen, Prasanna Jayawardene shows what he brings to Sri Lanka’s table, either side of the stumps

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Dubai07-Jan-2014

Prasanna Jayawardene’s wicketkeeping skills have never been in doubt, but he’s also demonstrated the value of his experience in a new-look batting line-up•AFP

There is a chance Prasanna Jayawardene might not have even played his first Test in over a year had Lahiru Thirimanne been fit in Abu Dhabi, but following his unbeaten 67 in the second innings of that game, Angelo Mathews has outlined the importance of Prasanna’s experience in the lower-middle order. The Sri Lanka XI carries three wicketkeeper-batsmen, as well as Kumar Sangakkara, and Thirimanne’s ability to contribute with the ball may have made him a slightly more attractive selection for the first Test. Prasanna will not have his place questioned for the second Test, however. Not only has Thirimanne returned to Sri Lanka, Prasanna has reasserted both his prowess with the gloves and his ability to stablise a top seven that features three batsmen who have played fewer than 10 Tests.”He gives us the cushioning especially with the gloves in hand,” Mathews said. “He is the best wicketkeeper going these days, and also he’s very stable when it comes to batting. He has a good technique to survive against good fast bowlers, and he sweeps against the spinners so he upsets their line and length. He’s a very good weapon to have in the team.”Among the many casualties of Sri Lanka’s barren Test year in 2013, Prasanna played league cricket in England during the summer. He had been left out for Sri Lanka’s home Tests against Bangladesh in March, prompting talk that his career was over, but good scores in a domestic first-class triangular tournament in October cleared his route back into the team.”I was injured during the Boxing Day Test in Australia in 2012, and since then I had no cricket to play. The Zimbabwe Test series was cancelled and the selectors decided to try out youngsters during the Bangladesh series. So I did not get a chance to play Test cricket – not even any first-class cricket. So I went to England and played some league cricket for Woodhall. I did well there. When I came back we had two four-day practice matches and I scored a century in the first match and did well behind the wicket. That’s how I got back to the side.”There is increased obligation on Prasanna to maintain a consistent output with the bat, because Dinesh Chandimal and Kaushal Silva are also capable of taking the gloves and Kusal Perera, also a wicketkeeper-batsman, sits in reserve.”I’m always under pressure when I play for Sri Lanka, but I like that,” Prasanna said. “Yes there are few wicketkeepers in the side but I don’t see it as additional pressure on me, because if I can do my part well, I won’t have any issues.”Prasanna said he was encouraged by the ease with which he settled into his role after his long hiatus. “I was waiting for my chance. It’s not easy to play a Test match after one year, especially as a wicketkeeper. It’s very difficult to get yourself prepared to play cricket after a long lay-off. I believe I did well in Abu Dhabi.”

Gibson rues replacement players not grabbing their chances

While injuries have left West Indies’ squad quite depleted on their ongoing tour of New Zealand, coach Ottis Gibson puts the poor results mostly down to second-string players not grabbing the opportunities given to them

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Jan-2014

Ottis Gibson: “Losing a couple of wickets to run-outs was a tough blow”•Getty Images

‘An efficient win’ – McCullum

On the team’s performance in Nelson: It was an efficient win. Any time your top four batters make majority of the runs, it is a good sign. We wanted to get to around that 260-run mark. Credit to our batters to get us to 285, which was an above-par score and then to our bowlers, who took early wickets and set us up well before the rain came. The bowlers, specially the spinners were brilliant. They got through their overs quickly, setting us up well when the rain came.
On the pitch at the Saxton Oval: The wicket felt a lot tougher than 280. Obviously Martin [Guptill] struggled early on, but he hung in there and we were able to bat around him. The wicket had a bit of two-paced nature with a tennis-ball bounce that stayed throughout. They bowled pretty well, today. You don’t want every wicket you play on to be a 340-wicket, but the way we batted today was brilliant.
On West Indies: They’re obviously struggling at the moment. We know what it’s like when you’re coming to the end of a long tour and things are going against you in terms of injuries and performances. But they are a dangerous team, they’ve got plenty of flair and they’re a very proud team, as well. It wouldn’t surprise me if they turn in their best performance in the next game.

While injuries have left West Indies’ squad quite depleted on their ongoing tour of New Zealand, coach Ottis Gibson puts the poor results mostly down to second-string players not grabbing the opportunities given to them. West Indies, after leading the ODIs 1-0, slipped to 2-1 down with their 58-run loss in the Nelson ODI on Saturday. In this particular game, the fielders let the team down at the death and his batsmen were unnecessarily run-out, Gibson said, resulting in the defeat.”Yeah, another tough loss. The first 25 overs of our [bowling] innings was excellent,” Gibson said. “But our fielding… Couple of dropped catches, which would’ve changed [things]. The way we fielded in the whole innings, particularly towards the end, New Zealand got 25, 30 runs too many. It wasn’t a 280 pitch.”Then losing a wicket through a run-out, when you need to be sensible for the first 20 [overs] – with the new balls, it’s going be difficult. Losing a couple of wickets to run-outs was a tough blow. And then weather interrupted and that was that.”Two of West Indies’ top three were run out in the chase of 286, and the team never sufficiently recovered – when the rains came, they were found to be 58 runs short of where they had to be via Duckworth-Lewis. Both those batsmen who were run out were replacements – Chadwick Walton and Kirk Edwards – brought in for injured players. “We’re missing around six players now. Gayle, Pollard, [Darren] Bravo, Samuels, Sammy, Ravi [Rampaul], Roach … Basically, players are getting an opportunity that they wouldn’t get if the above players were playing. And you have to say that these players are not taking the opportunities given to them.”While Darren Sammy, who has suffered a hamstring injury, is out for “two to three weeks”, Gibson said Rampaul – finger injury – might be ready in time to play the fifth ODI on January 8, which West Indies must win to tie the series. “Ravi’s [finger] was a little sore, but he’s a tough guy. It’s just his left hand, so his bowling won’t be affected and once we get him pain-free, I’m pretty sure he will play.””We’re still waiting for the results [of the tests done on Sammy]. He’s still limping around a bit. We’re not sure how he’s going to travel, but he’s staying with us for a little longer. The injury is a two- to three-week situation. Hopefully, we can assess his situation for the T20s.”Gibson said the squad would be strengthened with the arrival of specialist T20 players from the Caribbean. “There are some guys coming in for the T20s in two days’ time. Samuel Badree, Andre Russell and Andre Fletcher. We’re down to bare bones, and need to look at integrating them into the mix, and try and move forward.”

Leeds: Donnohue makes Cantwell claim

Leeds reporter Joe Donnohue has dropped an update on Norwich midfielder and United transfer target Todd Cantwell…

What’s the talk?

The LeedsLive journalist has claimed that the England U21 international is held in higher regard outside of Norfolk, in comparison to how he is viewed at his current club.

He told GIVEMESPORT:

“I think the opinion of Todd Cantwell is higher outside of Norwich than it is at Norwich, from what I’ve gauged.

“He obviously had that start to the 2019/20 season with Norwich, before they were relegated, and set the Premier League alight.

“He wasn’t as prominent as Teemu Pukki of Emi Buendia in the Championship when they were promoted.”

Excitement

Leeds fans will surely be excited by this update from Donnohue as it suggests that the Whites could pick up a bargain with Cantwell. He is out of contract at the end of the season, with Norwich having an option to extend it by one year, and the club could pounce to snap him up.

If the Canaries, as Donnohue has hinted at, do not rate him as highly as Leeds, that could mean that the Whites are able to sign him without paying the fee they believe he is worth. His contractual situation could also play into Victor Orta’s hands, as Norwich may be inclined to cash in on him in January before his value decreases as a result of his deal running down.

Explaining Cantwell’s recent absence from the Norwich team, Farke said:

“Last season we could dominate a game with 70pc or 80pc possession. So you need many, many creative players on the pitch to open deep-lying opponents.

“Maybe now we need players in those areas who are strong without the ball, or for physical players who have pace and are a bit more direct.

“You have to be super fit, in super shape and to be prepared mentally and physically. You cannot afford to show up in a Premier League game at 98pc. You could argue the best player in the world, maybe (Cristiano) Ronaldo, could do this.”

This ties in with Donnohue’s comments about the midfielder being rated higher outside of Norwich, with Farke suggesting that Cantwell is not strong enough for the Premier League. However, the winger produced six goals and two assists in the 2019/20 campaign and is only 23-years-old, which suggests that the potential is there for Bielsa to mould him into a top player for Leeds and excite the supporters with his talents on the pitch.

AND in other news, Leeds sealed dream deal over “very talented” gem whose value has increased 2300%…

Hauritz takes four in rainy draw

Rain prevented either side pushing for victory on the final afternoon at the SCG, where New South Wales had to settle for first-innings points in their match against Queensland. The Bulls were set an unlikely 313 to win and when the rain came shortly after the tea break, they were 3 for 135 – effectively four down with Matthew Gale injured and unable to bat – with Peter Forrest on 41 and James Hopes on 40.Usman Khawaja had been caught behind off the bowling of Sean Abbott for 25 after Queensland lost both openers, Nathan Reardon for 22 and Greg Moller for 1. Earlier, the Blues had declared at 9 for 221, a score set up by 67 to each of the openers, Nic Maddinson and Ryan Carters.Nathan Hauritz picked up 4 for 93 for the Bulls and sparked a mini-collapse as New South Wales lost 4 for 2 in the space of four overs. But the stand-in captain Peter Nevill steadied the Blues with 29 before the declaration came.
