United ready to cut losses on struggling star

Now, it has emerged that Manchester United are willing to sell Antony this summer, but that it may well be easier said than done. The 24-year-old has endured a torrid two seasons at Old Trafford, with his sixteen goal contributions just two more than the number of yellow cards he has picked up at the Theatre of Dreams.

Despite his early struggles, Erik ten Hag revealed he still believed in Antony's ability following a defeat to Brighton back in May 2023, claiming he had the potential to be a "great player".

“I think his passion is a strength,” the Dutchman began. “Of course, until a certain level you have to control it. But you need passion and desire to win your games and to win battles in the game. It’s true, it’s very strong with him.

“He is very ambitious. As I say, don’t go over the top, stay focused on your game and what the game needs. If he is doing that, he is a great player.”

But in the time since that has clearly changed, and the Brazilian has slipped down the pecking order at Old Trafford. He started just two Premier League games in 2024, and didn't even make it off the bench in the final two games of the season, finishing the campaign with just one goal and one assist to his name after 29 outings.

Signed for a massive £86m and handed a luxurious five year deal worth £200,000 per week, his value has deteriorated rapidly with Transfermarkt now suggesting that the Brazilian is worth just £21m, less than a quarter of what the club shelled out for him less than two years ago.

And it is questionable whether or not United would even receive that fee for him, with the 24-year-old having failed to show any of the talent that made him so coveted at Ajax this side of the English channel. If they do though, they are now ready to consider it, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

"At the moment, the situation is really, really quiet", he told GIVEMESPORT. "In case they receive an important proposal, I think it will be considered by all parties."

Any deal to a club outside of Saudi Arabia would likely require Antony to drop his wages too, with few clubs in Europe able to offer the sort of money that he currently pockets at Old Trafford.

Though an altogether unlikely departure this summer then, it speaks volumes to his fall from grace that his exit is even being considered.

On the whole, the Gunners' squad has improved over the last year, with young stars like William Saliba and Declan Rice taking the next step in their journey to becoming seriously world-class talent. However, as is the case with most teams, there were a few players who did not have a great season with Arsenal.

One such player is Thomas Partey. The 30-year-old had previously been an integral part of Arsenal's midfield and formed an excellent partnership with Granit Xhaka. However, the Ghanaian's inability to stay fit severely hampered his playing time, with the midfielder making just 14 league appearances across 2023/24, completing 90 minutes on just five occasions – arguably making him an unreliable long-term option for Mikel Arteta.

With Partey's time as a regular for Arsenal potentially coming to an end, the north London powerhouse have begun looking at alternative options.

They are reportedly interested in signing Everton's Amadou Onana and have already made contact to be "informed on the player's situation". Elsewhere, the Gunners are maintaining an interest in Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes, while they are also still looking at Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi, from whom they may well "try again" to sign.

Arsenal ready to make offer for £102m-rated midfielder

Now, a fresh name is garnering interest from the Emirates. The player in question is 19-year-old Benfica sensation Joao Neves.

As per Portuguese outlet A Bola, Neves was added to Arsenal's transfer shortlist recently and they are now ready to make an offer to try to bring the midfielder to England. However, Arteta is only said to be willing to offer up £51m for Neves' services. While this is a high sum for a teenager currently earning over €18k (£16k) a week, he is said to have a £102m release clause in his deal, which runs until 2028.

Despite only being 19, Neves has made 75 senior appearances for Benfica, including 55 across the 2023/24 season. His stellar showings have also earned him a place in the Portuguese national team and praise from his fellow countryman, Bruno Fernandes.

"He is an excellent player and an excellent kid. He will have a bright future wherever he goes," Fernandes said.

Champions League football means Arsenal likely have decent money to spend this summer, and selling Partey would soften the blow of any heavy outlay on Joao Neves, not to mention any other targets they have.

However, their pursuit of the youngster may be complicated further by his current club, who have been keen on hike his release clause to around £127m, which would be well over double the Gunners' reported current offer.

Ruben Amorim has opened up on claims that he could succeed Pep Guardiola as Manchester City boss.

  Further fuelling the rumours is Sporting's current director of football, Hugo Viana, who has agreed to join City next year, replacing Txiki Begiristain as the club’s sporting director. This development has sparked talk of a possible reunion between Viana and Amorim at City, with both having worked closely during their time in Portugal.

  In an interview with , Amorim brushed aside the swirling rumours and said: "Hugo Viana and me, we have different and separate paths. His appointment doesn’t mean that I’m going to Man City. We have a very good professional relationship."

  Interestingly, Sporting and City are set to lock horns in the Champions League next month. Amorim mentioned that Viana would avoid involvement with the Sporting team during that week to prevent any conflict of interest.

  "Nothing about Sporting has changed. Nothing. Everything remains the same until the end of the season," he informed. "Obviously, Viana, during City's week, won't be available to enter the dressing room. I'm going to leave him out, to avoid conflicts. Otherwise, everything will stay the same until the end of the season."

The likes of Johan Bakayoko, Crysencio Summerville and Antonio Silva have already been linked on that front in three potential deals that would undoubtedly hand the Reds an impressive boost this summer. Bakayoko and Summerville would be particularly interesting arrivals, given how the likes of Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez struggled to find their form in Liverpool's attack at the end of the season.

Away from attacking options, however, FSG could also need to sign a replacement for Joel Matip, who left the club at the end of the campaign following the end of his contract. And that's where Leny Yoro could come in.

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Liverpool are "working hard" to sign Yoro ahead of Real Madrid, but the defender seemingly has his heart set on a move to the La Liga giants. The Lille star, reportedly worth between £50m and £85m, could reportedly reject Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Manchester United in favour of Madrid this summer.

Still just 18 years old and a standout in Ligue 1 at times, the number of top clubs interested in Yoro comes as no shock. Liverpool will just hope to finally beat Real Madrid off the pitch.

"Complete" Yoro could succeed Van Dijk

Whilst Liverpool's immediate focus should be on replacing Matip, their long-term aim should be to find a player capable of filling the inevitable void left behind by club captain Virgil van Dijk. Yoro, at such a young age, can kill two birds with one stone.

The Lille gem wouldn't need to step into Van Dijk's shoes right away, instead likely acting as fourth choice behind Ibrahima Konate, the aforementioned Dutchman and Jarell Quansah. However, eventually, that role should be his if Jacek Kulig's praise is anything to go by. The football talent scout described the teenager as "complete" on X.

It won't be easy to convince Yoro to reject Madrid, especially given their current status, but a long summer may just see the Reds make a crucial move.

  Bayern will be keeping a close eye on England's upcoming double-header. They are next in action on October 19 in the Bundesliga against Stuttgart, before a blockbuster Champions League clash with Barcelona.

Arsenal were a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League this year, but unfortunately, they fell just short of dethroning Manchester City at the top of the table.

Mikel Arteta's side enjoyed a brilliant campaign, but there is no room for error with Pep Guardiola breathing down your neck – just ask Jurgen Klopp.

So, the Gunners will go into the summer looking for ways to improve the squad, and based on recent reports, that could include bringing in a player to replace the clinical Leandro Trossard.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from the Standard's Simon Collings, Arsenal are still interested in Athletic Bilbao's star winger Nico Williams ahead of the summer transfer window.

Collings reports that the exciting attacker is said to have a release clause of just £43m, which should be music to the ears of Edu Gaspar and Co, but he has also flagged a potential issue with his wages.

According to Capology, the Spain international is currently earning a mammoth wage of £172k-per-week, which totals around £9m-per-year, and while that wouldn't be a particularly unusual wage to pay a star player in the Premier League, the fact that Williams is only 21 years old could create problems for the Gunners wage structure down the line.

That said, while the salary side of things is less than ideal, especially as it's substantially more than the £90k-per-week Trossard makes, the fact that the Gunners have a chance to sign such a dynamic player for a reasonable fee means they must at least consider bringing Williams to North London.

How Williams compares to Trossard

So, if Arteta does end up replacing his experienced winger in Trossard with an exciting up-and-comer in Williams, would he be making a smart decision? Or would it be one change too many?

Well, in terms of their output this season, as impressive as the Belgian has been for the North Londoners, it's the Spaniard who comes out on top, with a staggering seven goals and 17 assists in 36 games, to his potential competition's 17 goals and two assists in 46 games.

In other words, the "mind-blowing" Bilbao ace, as described by U23 scout Antonio Mango, averaged a goal involvement every 1.5 games, whereas the Waterschei-born forward averaged a goal involvement every 2.4 games.

Unfortunately for the former Brighton & Hove star, it's not just goals and assists that make him a clear second-best. When it comes to the pair's underlying numbers, he can't compete.

For example, while the Copa del Rey winner produces a lower non-penalty expected goal and assists figure, he produces a higher actual non-penalty goal and assists figure, as well as more shot and goal-creating actions, more progressive carries, far more successful take-ons, recovers more balls, and wins more aerial duels, all per 90.

The comparison between the two wingers is really quite one-sided, whichever way you look at it.

Therefore, if Arsenal have a real chance of signing Williams this summer, they should take it, even if his wages are higher than the club would like, as his output and numbers are spectacular.

  After missing out on the September international window, Mexico veterans Raul Jimenez and Guillermo Ochoa are back with this October. Jimenez, the Fulham striker, has had a bright start to the campaign with the while 39-year-old Ochoa is being handed another chance in net.

  Manager Javier Aguirre named his entire squad for the upcoming window, with matches against the U.S. men's national team and Spanish La Liga side Valencia.

  In a rare instance, the national team will face the Spanish club. It will be a farewell match for legend Andres Guardado, who is playing his final game for his country against the team he represented from 2012-2015.

• WHAT NEXT FOR RICHARDS, PALACE?

  Richards and Palace will hope their winless spell comes to an end next week when they face another struggling side in Everton on Sept. 28.

Over the years, Manchester United have produced some truly fantastic players in their famed Carrington academy. However, they have a special knack for producing some of the most talented midfielders in football history.

This dates right back to the Busby Babes, when one of the most exciting players, Duncan Edwards, played 177 times for the first team, before tragically passing away in the Munich Air Disaster.

The likes of Paul Scholes, one of the greatest midfielders ever to play the game, also came through United’s academy. Scholes was part of the legendary Class of ‘92, along with the likes of Gary Neville and David Beckham.

The former England international played 716 times for United, scoring 155 goals and assisting 81, but he was much more than that. Scholes was a master on the ball and had the most spectacular passing ability, able to pick passes most players can’t even see.

Most recently, Kobbie Mainoo is the midfielder breaking into United’s first team. Though only 19 years old, he has played 28 games for the Red Devils this season and has not looked out of place once. He seems set to go to Euro 2024 with England in the summer.

However, there is one Carrington midfielder who has had two spells at United, who splits opinion as to whether he was a success at Old Trafford or not.

Paul Pogba's time at Man Utd

The player in question here is World Cup winner Paul Pogba. The former United man is currently serving a suspension for taking a banned substance, although he is contracted to Juventus, after returning for free two summers ago.

Pogba’s time at United certainly causes debate as to whether he was worth the money they spent to resign him in 2016, a then-world record fee of £89m. The midfielder's 233 games for the club, which included seven in his first spell, yielded 39 goals and 48 assists, as well as two trophies, the Europa League and the Carabao Cup.

Despite his large fee and his output, there is little disputing Pogba’s pure grace and elegance as a midfielder. Sadly, he was often been misprofiled and played as a number six, yet in reality, his best actions all came further up the pitch.

He played his best football at United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, playing 101 times for him, scoring 17 goals and assisting 23. He often played on the left wing later in the Norweigan’s reign and thrived in that role.

Pogba is one of the silkiest dribblers of the modern day, despite his tall frame, which was actually a benefit, helping him shift defenders away from him with ease. According to Fbref, he averaged 48.16 carries per 90 minutes in the 2020/21 Premier League season, ranking him in the top 14% of midfielders.

Not only that, the Frenchman is sublime with the ball at his feet, capable of playing 50 or 60-yard passes which always find its desired target. In the same season, Pogba played 1.95 switches per 90 minutes, which ranked him in the top 1%, and played 6.26 final third passes per 90 minutes, ranking him in the top 13%.

Aerially, the former United man is superb, and that season, won 2.61 aerial duels per 90 minutes, ranking him in the top 4%, as well as making 7.02 ball recoveries per 90 minutes. Whilst the defensive side of his game is not as good as the attacking side, he is still a more than capable defender, and his height is part of the reason why he was shoehorned into playing as a number 6.

Sadly, United have never really replaced Pogba, yet a midfielder of his profile is what is missing from their squad. However, the answer could well lie in the Bundesliga 2, Germany’s second division, namely Assan Ouedraogo.

Man Utd eyeing Pogba-like Casemiro replacement

According to Sky Sports in Germany, United have “scouted him from abroad for the game against Düsseldorf”, meaning there is certainly an interest there.

They would no doubt face competition from other clubs for Ouedraogo, with the likes of Atalanta, VfB Stuttgart, Werder Bremen and TSG Hoffenheim also thought to be interested.

Should United wish to bring Ouedraogo to the club this summer, they would have to pay a fairly nominal fee, specifically £17.1m. According to reporter Florian Plettenberg, the youngster has a release clause of this value in his contract.

What makes Ouedraogo so good

Ouedraogo is a 17-year-old midfielder currently playing for German giants Schalke. He has impressed in his debut season of professional football, playing 15 times, scoring and assisting twice each.

Like Pogba, he is a lanky midfielder, yet graceful on the ball. He was described by football analyst Ben Mattinson on X as a "frightening" player who is a “great ball carrier” with “quick feet for someone standing at 191cm”.

According to Fbref, Ouedraogo averages 2.18 progressive carries per 90 minutes, and 1.03 carries into the final third per 90 minutes, which rank him in the top 15% and 3% amongst midfielders respectively. He is also good in the air, with an average aerial duel win rate of 1.41 per 90 minutes, which places him in the 77th percentile.

As far as Pogba replacements go, perhaps Manchester United should look no further, given their extremely similar skills. However, the Red Devils might well consider this summer the ideal time to replace Casemiro, who looks a shadow of his former self.

The German youngster could well prove to be the replacement for Casemiro if the Brazilian leaves. Indeed, if United decide to sign him with this in mind, they must be careful though.

As Mattinson explained Ouedraogo has a "similar profile" to Pogba, Kephram Thuram and Ryan Gravenberch, explaining those three are “players who are mis-profiled as a six due to their physical prowess and height but actually are best as advanced eights”.

As such, if United did purchase Ouedraogo it might mean they have to play Mainoo as a deeper midfielder. This certainly works against the 19-year-old’s best skillset, which is also playing as an advanced eight. Thus, they would likely have to sign another player who thrives most when playing deeper to fit both Ouedraogo and Mainoo into the same side.

Signing the Schalke sensation for just £17.1m certainly seems like a smart piece of business for United to conduct. It means they could finally bring in a replacement for Pogba and replace Casemiro. Doesn't that sound a little bit good?

  The Blues have held talks with Transport for London and real estate developers Delancey over a potential move to a site at Earl's Court, according to . The club are determined to increase their home capacity from 42,000 but have been unable to make progress in developing their Stamford Bridge home. That has led Chelsea to look for a fresh site and draw up plans for a new stadium. It's estimated that the site at Earl's Court would set Chelsea back around £500 million ($653m).

  THE BIGGER PICTURE

  Chelsea face difficulties redeveloping Stamford Bridge due to the stadium's location next to a tube line. A move away from the famous ground is therefore an alternative option but also fraught with complications. The freehold of Stamford Bridge is held by Chelsea Pitch Owners and the company could potentially block any move away. Chelsea also face a potential obstacle in the shape of the Earl’s Court Development Committee (ECDC) which wants to build a development and has no plans to include a stadium.

  The ECDC released the following the statement on Tuesday. "There is no plan within our plans for Chelsea FC to relocate to the Earl's Court site.
