Tottenham fans loved Giovani Lo Celso’s late introduction on Tuesday night

Giovani Lo Celso made his return from a hip problem in Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League clash with Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday night.

The Argentina international had been on the sidelines since picking up an injury during the September international break.

Lo Celso was given the final 11 minutes against Red Star, though, as he entered the field as a replacement for Dele Alli.

In truth, it was a nice game for the 23-year-old to make his return as Mauricio Pochettino’s side were leading 5-0 at the time against their disappointing opponents.

According to WhoScored, Lo Celso completed 11 of his 14 passes on the field – giving him a pass success rate of 79% for his late cameo.

It would be fair to say that Pochettino’s decision to introduce the summer arrival in the latter stages went down extremely well with the Tottenham fans.

Indeed, a selection of their reaction to the substitution can be seen below:

Sheffield Wednesday’s predicted XI vs Wigan

Sheffield Wednesday will look to return to winning ways as they host Wigan on Saturday, and Garry Monk could make a subtle tweak to his side in order to get back on track.

The former Birmingham boss has experimented with his choice of formations so far but mostly trusted the same personnel, and therefore there may not be too many changes despite defeat to Hull last time out.

Wednesday started brightly under Lee Bullen before tailing off slightly and much of their success has been due to their defence, conceding only nine goals in 10 Championship games.

Even Tom Lees hasn’t been missed much so far, with new signing Julian Borner proving that Steve Bruce was right to bring him in over the summer.

The attack has been a slightly different story for the Owls, though, with Steven Fletcher the only striker currently scoring on a consistent basis.

For that reason, Monk could decide to use the Scot as the lone forward up-front, and line-up like this.

It is a formation change which works for two main reasons – it provides Wednesday with cover in midfield whilst allowing Kadeem Harris and Adam Reach free reign to attack.

That could be particularly effective for the latter, as it will allow him to hug the touchline or cut inside onto his stronger left foot.

Wigan have been particularly weak at defending through the middle this season, with 66% of the shots they have conceded coming via that avenue, and with Reach often enjoying success from long range – as evidenced by his four goals from outside the box in the last campaign – that could be a way to breach the visitors’ defence.

A return to the starting line-up for Joey Pelupessy could also be on the cards, as the Dutchman is yet to feature under his new boss despite offering defensive cover in midfield.

Last season he averaged 1.9 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per game and so could marshall the space in front of the back four with great effect, and in doing so reduce the defensive responsibility on Barry Bannan.

Since Monk’s arrival two players who have seen their roles increase are Sam Winnall and Atdhe Nuhiu, but the strikers have offered just two goals between them and may be better suited acting as an impact sub, with Nuhiu’s height offering an attacking alternative – as evidenced by his  average of 5.5 aerial duels won per game this season.

Arsenal fans disapprove of links to Olympiacos winger Daniel Podence

Arsenal fans have voiced their disapproval after the club were linked with Olympiacos winger Daniel Podence.

Podence, 23, has been at the Greek-outfit since 2018 and has made 55 appearances, scoring 10 goals and providing 10 assists.

The Portuguese left-winger proved to be a handful for Tottenham in the Champions League, scoring on the stroke of half-time as Olympiacos came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2.

Sportime revealed that a number of Premier League scouts were present during the encounter with Spurs and that Arsenal are interested in bringing him to England, though his current club will want a minimum of €25m (£21.6m).

Podence has recently received a lot of praise on the back of his performances towards the end of last season, as the 23-year-old helped his side win 10 consecutive league games and finish second in the Greek Super League, per Portugoal.

Despite his strong start to the season, Gunners supporters have shown a lack of interest in securing the services of the Portuguese midfielder. One fan questioned the club for chasing a winger when Unai Emery’s side lack creativity.

Here you will find some of the best responses from Arsenal fans:

Barcelona fans are gushing over Frenkie de Jong’s performance

Barcelona drew 0-0 with Borussia Dortmund in their opening Champions League encounter on Tuesday evening.

Of course, with their ambitions and aspirations, the Catalan giants will want to get back to winning ways in Europe’s elite club competition as quickly as possible; they will also play Inter Milan and Slavia Prague in Group F.

Nevertheless, fans have praised Frenkie De Jong for his performance against the German giants.

The young Dutchman was once again a steady and secure presence in Barcelona’s midfield, turning in a fine display in Germany, notching a pass completion rate of 91% from 80 total passes, while also completing one dribble and making four tackles.

Many fans quickly jumped to social media and Twitter in order to shower De Jong with compliments and messages of support.

Some seem to think he’s a true joy to watch and others even claim he’s got Barcelona DNA.

Wolves boss Nuno should call on Taylor Perry for squad depth reasons

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In The Pipeline series, which takes a look at some of the most promising young talent either linked with clubs or emerging from their academies…

It’s been no secret that Wolves owners Fosun are trying to build something special in the west Midlands – and that derives from the bottom up, not least because of their rapid rise over the past two years.

In that time, they’ve signed several big-name stars such as Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Rui Patricio, and Patrick Cutrone.

They also won the Championship title and then clinched Europa League qualification the very next season.

That’s all extraordinary and magnificent, but one key factor has been lacking for far too long.

It’s time to start developing from within, Fosun even knows it too after investing a lot of money in the youth setup this year.

Morgan Gibbs-White is living proof that a functioning yet talented academy can bear fruit, he made his first appearance for the club aged 16 in the FA Cup back in 2017.

You could even look down the road at West Brom if you wanted the perfect blueprint.

Therefore, it seems appropriate to take a look at one name Nuno Santo could call upon as the season trundles on.

Given their advance into the Carabao Cup fourth round, Wolves are pretty much going to be playing two games per week for the foreseeable future – thus their squad will be tested to its absolute limits in terms of fitness.

But with Gibbs-White’s debut and a cup competition, there’s a key similarity.

Taylor Perry made his maiden bow for the club last week, coming on as a substitute against Reading in the Carabao Cup.

He was introduced early on due to an injury to a fellow debutant in Bruno Jordao.

According to SofaScore, the 18-year-old registered 76% passing accuracy and managed to put in two tackles, one interception, and one clearance.

That isn’t bad at all for a young kid making his first appearance for his local club, at Molineux too.

Taylor hails from just six miles away in Kingswinford and talked up his boss following continued involvement in the senior setup by saying: “Nuno’s a great manager, so it’s great to learn from a manager like him. Training under him, you can progress and make yourself a better player.”

The Portuguese native has transformed Adama Traore this season and has improved Gibbs-White’s potential by exposing him to games more regularly – the young midfielder has made eight appearances already this season.

So, he should now put some faith in Perry as the season continues on; Wolves’ squad depth will undoubtedly be tested and they could do far worse than handing minutes to young players.

Liverpool keen to bring Khephren Thuram to Anfield

[ad_pod ]

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool will battle Chelsea for the signature of Monaco teenager Khephren Thuram in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the word, then?

Khephren is the son of France legend Lilian Thuram, who played for Monaco, Parma, Juventus and Barcelona during a wonderful career.

The 47-year-old is actually the most capped player in the history of the France national team, having made 142 appearances for his country.

The former defender has two sons, the second of which – Khephren – currently turns out for principality side Monaco.

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are chasing the 17-year-old, but the Reds will face competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea.

It is certainly an interesting situation to monitor, particularly when considering that Juventus have also ‘watched’ the teenager during the 2018-19 campaign.

What do we know about him?

Khephren has not yet signed professional terms with Monaco, despite the fact that he has already made three first-team appearances for the club.

The midfielder actually appeared twice for Monaco in the Champions League earlier this season, whilst he has made the bench for five Ligue 1 fixtures this term.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

Born in Italy, the teenager has turned out for France at Under-18 level and according to transfermarkt, mainly operates as a defensive midfielder.

It would be fair to say that the youngster is quite an unknown quantity when it comes to assessing whether he could thrive at a club of Liverpool’s size.

Living up to his father’s reputation is going to be incredibly difficult, but the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Juventus do not monitor a player unless he has a lot of talent.

Tottenham fans should be watching Youcef Atal in action on Monday night

[ad_pod ]

Despite seeing Kieran Trippier move to Atletico Madrid and Serge Aurier suffer a hand injury that required surgery, Tottenham Hotspur failed to move for a new right-back before the summer transfer window slammed shut.

That meant that Kyle Walker-Peters started the campaign there, although his progress was halted after he suffered an issue in the defeat to Newcastle United, which meant that Davinson Sanchez had to be utilised there against Arsenal last time out.

It is clearly a problem position for Spurs though, and it would hardly be surprising if Mauricio Pochettino made a priority when the January transfer window opens in the New Year.

One player the north London outfit were linked with during the summer was Nice’s Youcef Atal, with Algerian media outlet DZ football reporting with just days to go until the deadline last month that Tottenham were keen on the 23-year-old.

Having notched up six goals and a further assist in 30 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 outfit last term, that was hardly surprising.

The African is a versatile player who can feature anywhere on the right – as shown by the fact that his only start for Nice so far during the 2019/20 campaign came on the right wing, rather than at full-back.

He appears to have a good record further forward too, with four of his six goals last season coming from that position, according to Transfermarkt.

Atal has certainly impressed going forward in his 114 minutes on the pitch so far this term too, having 1.5 shots per game and completing four dribbles on average, according to WhoScored, as well as some decent enough defensive statistics, too.

The fact that he is yet to make a cross despite playing higher up the pitch is a potential concern, even if it is early days.

It remains to be seen if Pochettino will reignite his interest in the Algeria international in January, but Tottenham fans have the perfect opportunity to keep tabs on the 23-year-old’s progress when his nation host Benin in a friendly on Monday night.

And who knows, an impressive showing could potentially lead him a step closer to a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Wolves could make late Aaron Ramsey move

Wolves could still make a last-gasp move for Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey this month, according to a late transfer rumour which has emerged.

The Lowdown: Ramsey leaving Juve?

The Welshman has struggled to make his mark during his time in Italy, only registering six goals and six assists since arriving from Arsenal in 2019.

Juve are thought to be keen on offloading Ramsey before the January transfer window ends, and Wolves have been linked with a move in the recent past.

Leeds have also been backed to sign him, though, as a return to England for the rest of the season potentially comes to fruition.

The Latest: Wolves tipped to make late move for Ramsey

According to Calciomercato [via Sport Witness], Wolves’ move for Ramsey could ‘resolve’ itself at the 11th hour.

It is stated that ‘Jorge Mendes takes care of it’, suggesting that the agent could get a deal over the line for the 31-year-old, who has scored 20 goals in 71 caps for Wales.

The Verdict: Strong last-gasp addition

If Wolves sign Ramsey before deadline day ends, it could prove to be a bonus during an already positive month on the pitch at Molineux, following four wins in a row in all competitions.

While the Welsh midfielder arguably isn’t at his peak anymore, he has proven Premier League pedigree – 40 goals and 51 assists – and could complement the deeper-lying pair of Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves.

With Wolves looking to finish in the European places this season, Ramsey could add a sprinkling of stardust to provide more depth and quality in key matches between now and May.

Celtic: Paddy Kenny reacts to Kyogo Furuhashi update

Pundit Paddy Kenny has claimed it would be ‘absolutely massive’ if Celtic were able to call upon Kyogo Furuhashi against Rangers, Football Insider report, after the Hoops star was spotted in action at Lennoxtown.

The Lowdown: Furuhashi back in training

Furuhashi has been missing since December due to a hamstring injury, however, his Celtic teammates have taken the Premiership by storm following the winter break.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-23/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Hoops have dropped just two points from a possible 33 in 2022 and are now three points clear of rivals Rangers.

Celtic’s top scorer has recently been spotted in training, and there is hope from those at Lennoxtown that he could return to action at Ibrox on April 3, with two more games against Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side to follow.

The Latest: Kenny’s comments

Kenny, talking to Football Insider, believes Celtic are already heading into the upcoming Glasgow Derby clashes as favourites to win all three.

He claimed it would be ‘absolutely massive’ if Furuhashi was able to feature following the international break, describing it as ‘a blow for Rangers’.

“Celtic are probably going into these games as favourites.

“That’s before you get to Furuhashi. If he comes back for those games it’s absolutely massive.

“You are getting your best player back for games that could decide the title.

“We are at the business end of the season so you need your best players available.

“They won’t want to risk him getting injured so they will have to be careful.

“But even if he isn’t fit, the other strikers have been really good.

“It’s a blow for Rangers, for sure, but I’m sure Celtic are just happy to have him back.”

The Verdict: Place on the bench?

Ange Postecoglou could have Furuhashi available next weekend, but as he did with David Turnbull against Ross County, he may decide to include him on the bench instead of from the off.

He learned first-hand with Furuhashi against St Johnstone prior to the winter break that there is always a chance of further hamstring damage if they aren’t cautious.

Therefore, having him on the bench could be a smart decision, as there is still a lot of football to play between now and the end of the season, with the title not decided next weekend.

Two Newcastle transfers may be immiennt

Newcastle United are ‘likely’ to sign two players this week, according to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards.

The lowdown

Last weekend, Newcastle played host to relegation rivals Watford, who sit just above the bottom three. The Magpies took the lead through Allan Saint-Maximin, only for Joao Pedro to snatch a point for the Hornets three minutes from time.

The draw leaves Eddie Howe’s men 19th in the table with just one win and 12 points from their first 20 matches.

Their next match sees them travel to 15th-placed Leeds United on Saturday, with the Whites putting daylight between themselves and the danger zone with back-to-back wins in the league, so it’s fair to say that the pressure is on for the Magpies.

The latest

Edwards took to Twitter on Tuesday morning to write that Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos is ‘edging closer’ to joining, and while his arrival is yet to be confirmed, senior club officials have been hard at  work trying to bolster the squad before the weekend trip to Elland Road.

The journalist is currently unsure about the identity of the second player who’s likely to join, as he tweeted: “Diego Carlos is edging closer to a #nufc move but still not confirmed yet. Told senior club officials have been working round the clock to secure targets and boost squad before Leeds. They have encountered resistance at every turn but 2 players (I can’t get other name) are likely”.

The verdict

Carlos’ impending arrival should be a significant boost given the Magpies’ defensive struggles. They have the worst record for expected goals against in the Premier League, but the hope will be that the 2019/20 Europa League winner with Sevilla shores them up at the back.

Who could the mystery second man be? Perhaps it’s Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata, for whom Newcastle have reportedly made an offer, and the Colombian marksman is believed to be open to joining.

If the Magpies agree to meet Atalanta’s €45m (£37.6m) asking price, that may be a deal they can get done in the next five days.
