Wolves fans react to Fosun ESL stance

The Athletic’s Wolves correspondent, Tim Spiers, has set out Wolves’ stance on the proposed European Super League.

Owners Fosun are apparently ‘steadfast’ in their opposition to the plans to create a new elite European competition with 15 guaranteed qualifiers.

Spiers writes that Fosun ‘respect the traditions’ of English football and were keen to use Tuesday’s meeting of the 14 excluded clubs to ‘voice their disappointment’.

He adds that even if Wolves were invited to join such a competition, they would refuse.

The Super League’s threat to Wolves

Fosun harbour ambitions of establishing the Midlands outfit as a Champions League outfit, and so their vision would be in disarray if the plans were to come to fruition.

The value of the club would suffer significantly from the diminished spectacle of a Premier League without the big six, who could be banned.

Three months ago, Nuno told the press that the establishment of such a competition was his ‘biggest fear’.

Rodgers must unleash Praet on Man Utd

Leicester City will be aiming to make history this weekend by booking their place in the last four of the FA Cup for the first time in just under 40 years.

The Foxes head into their quarter-final meeting with Manchester United in positive form and can welcome back a key returnee in the form of Belgian midfielder Dennis Praet.

Praet has been ruled out of action since suffering a hamstring injury against Stoke City in January. With him now back fit, Rodgers must restore him to the starting line-up against the Red Devils.

When analysing the candidates of those who would drop out of the team, the initial answer would be Ayoze Perez.

Despite the Spaniard notching his third goal of the season in the 5-0 thumping of Sheffield United last time, Praet would surely be a better option than the former Newcastle man.

Deployed alongside the regular midfield duo of Youri Tielemans and Wilfred Ndidi, the former Sampdoria man could dramatically reduce the amount of available space in midfield.

This, in turn, would negate the space for the Red Devils in the centre, potentially limiting the creativity and goal threat from the likes of Paul Pogba and the inspirational Bruno Fernandes.

After all, the key to beating the Red Devils could be to halt the Portuguese ace, considering that he has contributed to 46% of his team’s Premier League goals this season.

Indeed, in the 19 games that Fernandes has not had a direct goal contribution, the Red Devils have only won six, failing to score in nine of those matches.

Whilst the £18m-rated Praet would be extremely useful in limiting the space that the visitors can operate in, his composure on the ball could also be extremely useful. When compared to Perez, the midfielder is dispossessed on far fewer occasions, whilst racking up a greater pass success rate of 82.4% compared to 75.2% according to WhoScored.

It goes without saying then that limiting United of considerable possession in midfield could potentially be a huge factor in terms of Leicester winning the game.

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers has already labelled Praet as “wonderful” ahead of the match, so he will be hoping the midfielder has an equally wonderful performance as Leicester pursue history against Manchester United.

Football’s Five Biggest Betting Upsets of the 2010s

Upsets are a common theme with sports and we’ve seen plenty of these that even become films. But no sport does it better than football and 2010 saw a good number of epic upsets that literally no one outside diehard fanatics saw coming.

This is the appeal of betting on soccer online or football as being on the right side of a longshot overcoming the odds is unmatched. But for backers of the chalk, it’s the stuff of nightmares.

Here are the five biggest betting upsets of the last decade:

Leicester Win the Premier League (2016)

Leading off with the most stunning betting upset in the last decade and possibly the last century, LCFC made a mockery of sportsbooks everywhere by winning the EPL as 5,000/1 underdogs.

The Foxes had never even come close to the top flight title let alone win it. Their best result was a second-place finish back in 1929, when most sports bettors were not even born yet.

Leicester were led by Jamie Vardy who was a man possessed and scoring 13 goals in 11 consecutive matches. It took a bit of luck too as the ever-disappointing Tottenham blew a 2-0 lead against Chelsea as the Foxes clinched the title on May 2, 2016.

Several oddsmakers offered the odds as a joke similar to betting odds with Kim Kardashian winning the US Presidency. No one is laughing now as Leicester proved that in football, nothing is impossible.

Iceland Stun England in the Euros (2016)

It’s not a betting upset list without England in it and Iceland just added to the national side’s long list of unfortunate international debacles. England was a 2/1 favourite to eliminate Iceland, the underdogs of Euro 2016. Iceland was around 8/1 to win and a draw was 3/1.

Iceland fought back after trailing 1-0 almost immediately. Kolbeinn Sigthorsson scored the go-ahead goal before the 20-minute mark and that’s all she wrote.

This would be the country’s biggest international sporting event result. And as for England, manager Roy Hodgson quit within minutes of the result much to the nation’s relief.

If your highly-touted squad lost to a fledgling team with a part-time dentist in it, you’d quit too.

Wigan Shock Manchester City in FA Cup Final (2013)

2013 was a turning point for Man City and Wigan Athletic helped play a role in that in what would be one of the FA Cup’s most improbable championship performances.

Man City entered the match favored at 4/11 or -250 per moneyline odds. Wigan was 7/1 and a draw was nearly 4/1. The English squad boasted a stacked roster featuring not one, not two, but three players with ten or more goals in the Premier League.

But none of that mattered as the Citizens couldn’t find the back of the net for over 90 minutes. And in extra time, Ben Watson’s header would clinch the “greatest upset in FA Cup Final history in a quarter of a century.”

This would become Wigan’s first FA cup victory and City would sack manager Roberto Mancini just two days after.

FC Barcelona Hijack Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League Dreams (2017)

It’s not often we find the mighty Barca as an underdog and it’s even rarer to spot them as a 200/1 underdog. But the Catalans were staring at a 4-0 hole against the equally talented French squad.

Barca entered the game as 8/1 underdogs to advance to the next stage. Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and an own goal pushed the Catalans to striking range but Edinson Cavani scored for PSG to seemingly put it out of reach.

Luis Enrique’s boys’ odds jumped up to 200/1 as they were now behind 5-3 on aggregate with the clock ticking. But Brazilian wunderkind Neymar would score two quick goals to bring barca within one and Roberto would notch the clinching goal in extra time.

This improbable victory would be the Champions League’s biggest comeback.

South Korea Sends Germany Home in the World Cup (2018)

Koreans have been pulling shockers at the World Cup since before half of us were born. In 1966, the North Koreans upended the Italians and nearly half a century later, their southern counterparts did the same thing. In the 2018 FIFA World Cup, South Korea did it again. Oops!

The defending champions needed to beat Korea to advance to the knockout stage and oddsmakers pegged them as 1/5 favorites while South Korea was as large as an 18/1 underdog (a draw was 6/1).

For 90 minutes, it was Germany pushing Korea back and dominating ball possession. It seemed inevitable they would score. But don’t tell the Koreans that!

King Young-gwon chipped it past German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to give the Koreans a 1-0 edge and they’d add another when Neuer joined Germany as an attacker to officially eliminate Germany and keep them from advancing past the group stage for the first time in 80 years.

Celtic: Laxalt a major let down on Sunday

The wait is finally over. Celtic’s season is done and dusted in early March and for the first time in a decade, they will not be crowned Scottish Premiership winners.

It has been a torrid campaign for the Hoops and on a day where they had the chance to take things on at least another week in terms of the title race, they blew their chance.

If there was any positive, it would be that Rangers wouldn’t win the league at Parkhead. That is a measly consolation prize, however, especially after losing their dominance to the club’s biggest rivals.

Celtic’s performance against Dundee United on Sunday just about summed things up this term. They were devoid of quality in the final third and lacked a killer instinct in front of goal, drawing 0-0.

Benjamin Siegrist was in inspired form as he made no fewer than 12 saves in a rousing performance from the Dundee United stopper.

Try as they might, the Bhoys couldn’t find a way past him. Odsonne Edouard was off the pace while the withdrawal of David Turnbull after an hour didn’t help proceedings. The returning James Forrest – making his first outing since September – also failed to have a positive influence when he came on.

Though, a man who typified the afternoon and indeed Celtic’s season was Diego Laxalt. With Greg Taylor out injured, the Uruguayan started at left-back but was wasteful in possession and lacklustre at the back.

The left-back even missed a wonderful chance to score in the first half. The Hoops moved things infield and then when the ball was played into his path in the penalty area, he had all the freedom in the world to fire home.

The net was at his mercy but instead of firing it across the goal and into the far corner, he put it wide of Siegrist’s near post.

Offensively, Laxalt was off the pace, only attempting one cross in the entire game. Creatively, he was worse than the enigmatic Ryan Christie too.

The Scot has now only scored once in his last 25 outings but did at least provide four key passes on Sunday. Laxalt, though, only managed two in a performance where John Kennedy’s men enjoyed the best chances.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-hunt-stories-wagner-marsch-martinez-lennon-news” title=”The last stories on Celtic’s hunt for a new manager!”]

The AC Milan loanee was desperately poor in possession of the ball, surrendering it on no fewer than 22 occasions; the worst tally of anyone in green and white. Laxalt was only successful with 72% of his passes too.

As the full-back pushed on more and more in the second half, he left his side exposed on the counter-attack. Lawrence Shankland had plenty of space to raid down the left but fortunately for the Uruguay international, Dundee United failed to capitalise.

Laxalt wasn’t the only player who was poor on Sunday, but he did let Kennedy down in pretty significant fashion.

SAFC fans shocked at League One news

Many Sunderland fans have been reacting to the League One Team of the Week after their 1-0 victory over Bristol Rovers in the third tier this past weekend.

The Black Cats picked up an important victory on Saturday as they push for promotion to the Championship. They are now up to third in the table, just three points behind leaders Hull City with two games in hand (BBC). There were some other big results in League One during the past matchday, such as Peterborough United’s 7-0 humbling of Accrington Stanley.

Unsurprisingly, that led to five Posh players being named in the Team of the Week, as well as manager Darren Ferguson. Sunderland were represented only by Aiden McGeady, but it seems that many Black Cats supporters were shocked by the XI which was chosen – firstly, because the 34-year-old was selected despite him seemingly not having his best game, and secondly because Aiden O’Brien, who scored the only goal of the match against the Pirates, was not included.

The line-up was shared on League One’s official Twitter page, and these Sunderland fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the Sunderland fans had to say about the team below

Spurs: Palmer discusses Bale transfer

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former Premier League footballer Carlton Palmer discussed Gareth Bale’s form since his summer return to Tottenham Hostpur.

After leaving Spurs for Real Madrid in what was an £85 million world-record deal back in 2013, Bale went on to feature 251 times for Los Blancos, scoring 105 goals and providing 68 assists, helping the Spanish giants to win a remarkable four Champions Leagues, two La Ligas, four FIFA Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, two Supercopa de Espanas and one Copa del Rey.

Half a season into his return to Spurs, Bale has so far started just one Premier League game for Jose Mourinho’s side, playing just 160 minutes over a total of four appearances in the top flight, in which he has managed one goal.

“On the Gareth Bale situation, if that wasn’t at Tottenham, that would be an absolute catastrophe move and I thought it was inspired at the time,” Palmer told The Transfer Tavern. “But it’s not looking to be that way at the moment and Tottenham are lucky that he’s not become a main player for them, or not needed to be a main player, because it’s not worked out at the moment.”

He continued: “I knew he needed time to get his fitness up and get up to speed and whatever, but he should be ready to be playing an active part in the first team and delivering. Considering the wages they’re paying out to him at the moment, that’s turning out to be a bad, bad deal. At this moment, he’s been a waste of money because he’s not playing.”

Indeed, as Palmer suggests, Bale’s performances have not exactly been sensational for Tottenham so far this season, with the 31-year-old averaging a WhoScored match rating of 6.67 in the Premier League and a rating of 6.85 in the Europa League, ranking him as the club’s 11th-best performer in both competitions.

And, while Madrid are reported to be paying around 60% of the Welshman’s £600,000 weekly wage, Bale’s presence at Spurs is still costing the club around £240,000 per week, enough to rank him as Tottenham’s highest-paid player.

As such, it would appear that Palmer is entirely justified in dubbing Bale a “waste of money” at present, as, considering Harry Kane has 12 goals and 11 assists in the Premier League, while Son Heung-min has 12 goals and six assists in the top flight, both of whom earn less than Bale, it is easy to argue that the 31-year-old has not yet proved anywhere near good value for money for Spurs.

Liverpool will surely regret not signing Diego Carlos in the summer

Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos during the summer and the Reds will definitely regret not signing the Brazilian considering their defensive injuries this season so far.

Both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have been ruled out with long-term injuries, whilst Joel Matip has struggled with injuries in the past and has missed sporadic games throughout the season through injury problems.

This has meant that Fabinho has been forced to fill in at centre-back for most of the season, usually alongside youngsters Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams.

Whilst all three have done a superb job when relied upon by Jurgen Klopp, the Reds will surely want to avoid having to play the rest of the season with their current centre-back options, as any more injuries could seriously harm their chances of retaining the Premier League table.

The Merseyside club returned to the top of the table with a dramatic 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night, but with just three clean sheets to their name in the top-flight so far this season, their defensive vulnerabilities could be exploited later in the season.

Therefore, it could be argued that the Reds made a mistake in not securing the signing of Carlos during the summer, with it suggested that they were unwilling to match the defender’s release clause of £67.6 million.

Whilst this would have been an expensive deal for the club, the 27-year-old has been solid for the La Liga side since joining from Nantes, averaging a 6.90 rating for his performances last season, whilst also helping Julen Lopetegui’s side win the Europa League, as his overhead kick led to the Spanish side’s extra-time winner.

He has averaged a strong 6.81 rating for his performances this season and with WhoScored suggesting that the Brazilian’s main strength is passing, whilst he has no significant weaknesses, implying that he could’ve been a superb replacement for Van Dijk while he recovers from injury.

Perhaps we will see the Reds reignite their interest in Carlos in next month’s transfer window, with his release clause perhaps not seeming so bad now that Klopp is so short on senior defensive options.

And, in other news… Klopp must sanction January exit for LFC liability with “a taste for the big games”

Celtic: Lennon may have uncovered masterplan for Odsonne Edouard

Celtic banked their fifth win in a row today after they breezed to a 3-0 victory on the road. The reigning Premiership champions made easy work of brushing aside Hamilton, who couldn’t contain their red hot attack.

Neil Lennon will be especially thrilled as he looks to dig Celtic out of a huge hole. They have struggled with an inconsistent season and look more and more likely to lose out on lifting their tenth consecutive Premiership title. Rivals Rangers currently lead the pack and are running away with the league. They top the table with a hefty 16-point lead and are yet to lose a single match.

Lennon has been struggling to unearth his most productive lineup and has been experimenting with his squad in recent weeks. One decision that has paid off in dividends is his gamble on deploying Odsonne Edouard on the wing, rather than in the No.9 role.

A chance for an Edouard rebirth

The French striker has been hit and miss this season with his performances up front. He has looked a shadow of himself from last campaign, in which he contributed an astonishing 21 goals and 12 assists in 27 league games, as per Transfermarkt.

However, this time round he has been more absent in attack and has struggled to lace up his shooting boots. Loan signing Mohamed Elyounoussi has been more in-form than his teammate, but today Edouard, who reportedly earns £19,000-a-week, bounced back as he started on the left-wing instead of the Southampton ace.

According to Sofascore, the 22-year-old contributed a goal and an assist as well as a further big goalscoring opportunity and five key passes. His blistering presence in front of goal caused Hamilton so many problems. As well as his goal and assist, he hit the woodwork and also completed four of his six attempted dribbles.

His new role on the left could be Lennon’s way forward for the rest of this season. Not only did Edouard thrive out wide but it allowed Leigh Griffiths to shine up front as well. This could really be a masterstroke plan from the Celtic boss.

Aston Villa must sign Sivert Mannsverk

According to Calciomercato, Aston Villa have started to press for the signing of Sogndal starlet Sivert Mannsverk.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks have suggested Dean Smith’s side are interested in signing the 18-year-old and bringing him to the Premier League in this January transfer window.

Now, Calciomercato (via Sport Witness) have claimed that whilst both Villa and Everton have started to make their move for the Norwegian, but that they face a race against time to try and complete a deal.

The report adds that the two Premier League sides are a step behind both Ajax and Groninjen as the two Dutch teams have come forward with official offers for the midfielder.

Smith’s next crown jewel

After the excitement that Villa’s academy players brought following their involvement in the FA Cup third round clash against Liverpool, the club will have seen first-hand the kind of impact young, hungry talent can bring.

And whilst Louie Barry was the undoubted star following his goal against the Reds, Villa could really add to their abundance of young stars with a move for Mannsverk.

The teenager has already been named captain of Sorndal, and has been compared to Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge for his style of play.

Predominantly a central midfielder, Mannsverk can play further forward and a bit deeper too, and showed off his impressive potential with four goals and four assists in 29 competitive appearances last season whilst wearing the armband for his side.

With scouts from clubs all across the globe, finding the next big superstar who’s yet to be properly discovered has become a tall order. And given Mannsverk has already attracted interest from the likes of Everton and Ajax among others, it just goes to show Johan Lange has got a tough job trying to get a deal done.

But if he can, he could get Smith’s next crown jewel to go along with the likes of Barry and Jacob Ramsey.

Meanwhile, Villa are making an unforgivable mistake…

West Brom sold a star for just £1.25m, then he became a £25m goal machine

West Bromwich Albion could well have a new potent goalscoring hero in the form of Josh Maja, who has started this Championship season like a man possessed.

Only fit to make 12 appearances for Carlos Corberan's Baggies in the league last season, with just a paltry goal to show for his efforts, the former Sunderland youngster has now managed to register four goals from four league games to help his side sit pretty in second spot.

Fulham striker Josh Maja.

As much as West Brom are now showing the benefits of exercising patience with Maja, they didn't quite have the same levels of perseverance with this former attacker when he was starting out as a raw youngster, who has since gone on to become a goalscoring menace away from the Hawthorns.

Chris Wood's time at West Brom

Chris Wood, who is now a household name to Premier League fans with Nottingham Forest among the many other top-flight clubs he's lined up for, might now be forgotten about as ever being a ex-West Brom player, having only gone on to make 27 appearances for the West Midlands side.

The 74-time New Zealand international wasn't exactly a hit for the Baggies either, only managing to find the back of the net three times during his short stay with the club.

But, with a promising six assists also managed across these games, West Brom would cash in on their unpolished gem in 2012 when Leicester City bid £1.25m for the centre-forward's services.

Wood had shone on loan at the King Power Stadium before making that move to the Foxes permanent, and would become known as a serious threat in front of goal for many other clubs past Leicester, with the 32-year-old still excelling at Forest today even as his career begins to naturally wind down.

Chris Wood

Wood's career since West Brom

It hasn't been all smooth sailing for Wood since departing the Baggies as a young striker still keen to make a name for himself, however, with failed moves to the likes of Newcastle United sticking out from his career resume, as the Magpies won his coveted services for £25m in 2022.

He would only go on to score a weak five goals from 39 appearances at St James' Park, as the pressure of his bumper price tag proved too weighty, before going on to rebuild his somewhat tainted career at the City Ground.

Wood has found his goalscoring powers again since relocating to Forest, with an impressive 15 goals registered last campaign helping his relegation-threatened side stave off the drop, whilst two goals have already come his way during the infancy of the new season.

It's not as if Newcastle gambled and splurged that £25m back in 2022 for the sake of it either, with a combined 97 strikes finding the back of the net from the towering 6 foot 3 goal machine when he lined up for both Burnley and Leeds United, before his flop move to Tyneside came to fruition.

West Brom must really regret, with hindsight now on their side, not giving the Auckland-born striker more opportunities in the Baggies' first team, with Wood only given one chance in the Premier League to impress during the 2010/11 campaign when he was still on the roster at the club.

In the here and now, the 32-year-old would also really suit the system Corberan likes his team to play under, as the likes of Tom Fellows and Mikey Johnston would have a field day twisting and turning their markers down the flanks, before attempting to find the imposing figure of Wood ready to pounce.

The on-fire Forest number 11 will just aim to continue seeing out his playing days in style, as the Championship promotion hopefuls curse their bad luck over discarding Wood too soon.

Signed for £15m: West Brom flop has seen his stock crash to below £1m

West Bromwich Albion fans have tried their best to forget about this flop.
