Alastair Cook: 'While the sun's shining and I'm enjoying it, I want to continue'

Former England captain in no rush to call time on successful spell in autumn of career

Andrew Miller31-Mar-2021Sir Alastair Cook may have nothing left to prove on a cricket field after a record-breaking England career, but so long as the sun is shining and he’s still able to score enough runs to justify his place in Essex’s dominant County Championship line-up, he may yet be tempted keep playing first-class cricket after his current contract with the club expires at the end of the season.Cook turned 36 on Christmas Day, and is now entering his third season as an ex-England player, after bowing out on a high in 2018, with his 33rd and final Test century against India at The Oval. Since then, however, he has played integral roles in back-to-back title-winning seasons at Essex – the County Championship in 2019, and the Bob Willis Trophy last summer, in which he scored a magnificent 172 in the final at Lord’s – and he sees no immediate reason to walk away from such a successful period of his career.”I think our success has been a long time coming,” Cook said. “With the players we’ve had over the last ten years, I think we’ve underachieved, and it’s only been the last three or four years that we’ve won some trophies. But then things take a while to build, don’t they? You don’t just suddenly get a good side, it doesn’t just happen.”For those ten years where we didn’t win many trophies, we were in the second division, we were building that identity for this period of success. For us as players, we have to treasure it and try and keep it going as long as we can.”Having played an England record 161 Tests in the space of 12 years, including a world record 159 in a row, Cook is fairly sure he won’t be quite as driven to carry on playing as his Essex team-mate and former captain, Ryan ten Doeschate, who signed a one-year extension in October that will take him past his 41st birthday this year.Instead, he insists he will take an ad hoc approach to the remainder of his career, and savour the chance to re-connect with the club that nurtured him through the youth ranks and propelled him onto the international stage, but which – for obvious reasons – has not benefitted from his run-making for more than a handful of games a year since 2006.”There were a couple of reasons I carried on playing,” he said. “First, I didn’t know what I wanted to do, it’s a big hole to fill when all you’ve ever done is play cricket, to suddenly not to play a game would have been a big deal.”But I also wanted to win a trophy for Essex. I was part of [the Championship win in] 2017, I played the first six or seven games, but I spoke to Chris Silverwood [Essex’s then-coach] and said it was on my bucket list to win the County Championship, so to do it in in the first year back was brilliant.”I’ve got no idea [if this is my final year],” he added. “It’s the last in my contract, so until I hear anything else, who knows. But after my England days I was determined that, so long as I was enjoying driving into the ground, and doing the hard work to play, I’d continue.”It’s all unknown to me, and I quite like it. It’s a bit of a limbo in one sense, in that in three months’ time I might sit down and go, ‘you know what, it’s time for someone else to take my role’. But there’s good people at this club who make it easier for me. I enjoy playing with people like Nick Browne and Tom Westley, who I hadn’t played a huge amount with up to 2018.The chance to carry on playing with team-mates such as Nick Browne has been a key factor in Cook’s continued time at Essex•Getty Images”Obviously, last year was very different, but again, very enjoyable. Hopefully we can continue that and the motivation will be there, because you don’t want to disgrace yourself do you? You don’t want to look stupid, because there’s no better feeling than scoring runs.”On that note, Cook admitted that the runs haven’t quite been flowing so far in Essex’s pre-season – in fact his most notable on-field moment has been a viral clip on social media, as he walked for a plumb lbw against Harry Podmore in last week’s encounter with Kent.”You have to walk for that one,” he joked, “It hit me on my boot, and wasn’t going over. But while I’m in this situation, with the sun shining, and so long as I find the middle of my bat rather than the middle of my pad, I’m happy to continue.”I’ve enjoyed not having the real scrutiny and the pressure of playing international cricket. In county cricket, you are going back to basics in one sense. You just go back to batting, catching, having the odd drink here or there with the Essex team, and enjoying, I suppose, why you started playing sport before getting into a more professional way.”So, while I’ve still got that, and the support of my family, I can continue. But I just don’t know, I’m not going to sit here and give some massive statement. I’ll just do my preparation, get myself in the right technical space, and then hope to spend a bit of time in the middle, I haven’t done it yet, but hopefully I’ll go alright.”

One factor that may play a part in Cook’s decision-making will be the return of crowds to county fixtures, following the lockout in the 2020 season due to the Covid-19 outbreak.”We’ll really notice it as players when the fans are back, and we’ll really appreciate it,” he said. “On one level, it was quite nice and peaceful, but you play for the experience. And I look back on certain games – walking out at the MCG to a full house, or The Oval when we won in 2009 – the atmosphere there, you can’t buy that anywhere unless you’re living it, and it’s down to the fans.”As and when Cook does call time on his playing days, a career in the media beckons, with his regular work as a summariser for Test Match Special recently augmented by his first appearances in an England free-to-air Test, after Channel 4 were belatedly awarded the broadcast rights to last month’s India series.”It makes you really focus on your words,” he said. “There’s nothing worse than players like me doing interviews when they’re stumbling over answers.Related

“But I have really enjoyed it and I hope I’ve come across well. I try and give a bit of experience of what I felt when I was batting or captaining, but ultimately it’s a very subjective opinion.”It’s not like when you go out to bat. People say ‘how’s your day?’, and you know very quickly, if you’ve scored a hundred you’ve done a good job for the team, if you haven’t scored any runs, you ain’t done a very good job.”With punditry, there’s no pass mark, there’s no end column. It’s down to what people think and, while there’s obviously going to be people who don’t like your style, you’re certainly not going to take your feedback from social media, because you’d be mad to.”You’ve just got to try and improve, and try and do as good a job as you can. But I’ve really enjoyed it, and it’s given me some great viewing seats. The Ben Stokes hundred [against West Indies at Old Trafford], I wouldn’t have been there unless I was commentating, so I was really lucky to see certain things, and hopefully long may it continue.”

ENIC could fund the Semenyo move by selling Spurs’ £55k-p/w “liability”

Thomas Frank has done a lot of tinkering since taking the helm at Tottenham Hotspur, and recent form seems to be swinging in the direction of progress, following recent wins over Brentford in the Premier League and Slavia Prague in the Champions League.

It wouldn’t be wasted energy to pause and consider Tottenham’s shift from Ange Postecoglou’s high energy, attacking play toward Frank’s more pragmatic tactical take.

Pragmaticism is not necessarily a bad thing. Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti are two notable modern adherents of the style, after all. But there’s no denying that Frank’s Spurs could do with a bit more flair in the final third, pumping creativity through the forwards while maintaining the stable, structured roots.

How to achieve this? Well, ENIC Group seem to think Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo might hold the key.

Why Spurs want to sign Antoine Semenyo

Semenyo has scored six goals and supplied three assists in the Premier League this season. Only three players have notched more goal involvements: Erling Haaland (15), Igor Thiago (11), Bruno Fernandes (10).

The 25-year-old’s £65m release clause becomes active in January, and there’s set to be a swarm of interest in his signature, Tottenham getting ready to launch a bid, joined by Liverpool and Manchester City.

Semenyo has only gone from strength to strength under Andoni Iraola’s wing, now considered one of the best in the Premier League business.

In fact, pundit Chris Waddle believes he is “the best winger in the country”.

Tottenham would strike the golden jackpot by landing his signature, and to help them on the way to making it happen this January, ENIC may want to cash in on some deadwood.

Spurs could fund Semenyo move by selling "liability"

Tottenham have not quite clicked under Frank’s stewardship, but they are getting there, with the likes of Xavi Simons playing themselves into form recently and emphasising the green shoots.

However, not everyone has been a winner since the Danish tactician’s appointment, with Yves Bissouma having been excluded from Frank’s matchday squads all season. The 29-year-old’s last appearance came in May, on the final day of the Premier League season against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Bissouma has not played under Frank, dropped at the early stage of the new manager’s tenure after turning up late several times for training.

Given the recent allegations that the tough-tackling midfielder has been filmed inhaling nitrous oxide, Tottenham have had enough, and want to cut ties after more than three seasons.

However, the Mali international has a clause in his contract which could extend it next year, thus allowing the Lilywhites more bargaining power when offloading him.

Bissouma has long been regarded as one of the most talented midfielders in the Premier League, however this has not been channelled through application with enough regularity.

As per FBref, he ranked among the top 14% of Premier League midfielders for pass completion, the top 13% for tackles won and the top 10% for clearances per 90.

Tottenham are developing, though, and while Frank’s midfield unit have left something to be desired this season, it’s clear that Bissouma is not the progressive solution, branded as “a liability” by football writer Andrew Gaffney, during Postecoglou’s first season in charge.

It may not be a big payment, but Spurs would drain £55k from their weekly wage bill by selling the Malian, who is offering nothing this season. Such funds and space could be redirected toward someone like Semenyo, who would make a difference.

Liverpool agree terms to sign “aggressive” Celtic teenager in first Nancy exit

In an early blow for new manager Wilfried Nancy, Liverpool have now reportedly agreed terms to sign a young Celtic defender.

Nancy outlines "proactive" style as Celtic announce manager

Celtic took their time, but the Bhoys finally have their new manager in the form of Nancy. The Frenchman has arrived fresh from MLS side Columbus Crew and will be looking to pick up where interim boss Martin O’Neill left off. The 73-year-old took the Scottish giants from title despair back into the race with Hearts, but now it’s up to Nancy to complete the job.

Speaking to reporters after arriving, the new manager said: “I don’t consider myself as a boss. I am a leader. And for me the definition of a leader is create a good environment to help people express themselves. For me, that is so important. Because of my background, I was able to connect with people.

“My style of play is about the way I live. I like to be proactive in my life, I like to discover things. I also like to try things because the more you try things, the more you learn and the more you’re going to maximise your chance to have success in your life.

“We want to take care of the ball. The ball is the only tool in our life, without talking, that we can connect people. So can we use the ball to create emotions? Can we use the ball to score goals? Can we use the ball to have messages between us? So that’s why I want proactive football.”

Doak 2.0: Celtic lost "superstar" for £225k, now he's worth more than Engels

Celtic lost a young talent last year who is now valued at more than club-record signing Arne Engels.

1 ByDan Emery Dec 5, 2025

Before the new manager’s even had the chance to look at emerging stars, however, he’s set to lose young defender Dara Jakiemi to Premier League giants Liverpool.

Liverpool agree terms to sign Jakiemi

As reported by The Secret Scout, Liverpool have now agreed terms to sign Jakiemi from Celtic. They described the 15-year-old defender as “aggressive” and there’s no doubt that he would have been one to watch in Scotland. Now, however, Nancy will seemingly never get the chance to work with him.

Whilst Jakiemi is one for the future, it still represents a frustrating blow for Celtic and shows where they’re at right now. Having lost the likes of Ben Doak in previous seasons to Liverpool, the last thing the Bhoys would have wanted is a repeat.

Nancy should be keen to turn towards the academy if given the chance, even if he is to lose one of his young defenders in the early stages of his tenure. An emerging star would, of course, save Celtic the desperate need of adding several January additions.

Man Utd also eyeing move for "brilliant" £21m Wolves star with Gomes

Manchester United are now eyeing a move for another “brilliant” Wolverhampton Wanderers star, alongside their interest in midfielder Joao Gomes.

Man Utd looking to sign two Wolves stars

It could be viewed as questionable to be targeting players from Wolves, given that they have made a torrid start to the campaign, having only collected two points thus far, but Man United have recently set their sights on Gomes.

In fact, the Brazilian maestro has reportedly already said ‘yes’ to a move to Old Trafford, with INEOS now working on a deal, which could amount to £50m, with bringing in a new central midfielder of particular importance to Ruben Amorim & co.

Several targets have already been identified in midfield ahead of the January transfer window, including Nottingham Forest and England star Elliot Anderson, with journalist Andy Mitten revealing the Red Devils “would love” to sign the 23-year-old.

However, with a fee of over £100m being touted, potentially cheaper alternatives are also being targeted, and Man United are now eyeing a move for Wolves’ Andre, who has recently joined six other players on the list of midfield targets.

That is according to reliable reporter Rob Dawson, in a report for ESPN, with it being revealed United are looking to bring in at least one top midfielder next summer, while Amorim is also keen to bring in additional options at wing-back.

With United looking to get the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho off the books, INEOS feel as though they will have the financial muscle to make the necessary improvements to the squad, and moves could be made in January, although they would prefer to wait until the summer.

"Brilliant" Andre might not fit Man Utd's criteria

After signing for Wolves for £21m back in 2024, the Brazilian has gone on to establish himself as a key player for Wolves, and former player Dave Edwards has been impressed by the midfielder’s performances at times this season, lauding him as “brilliant”.

However, with United looking to sign a proven top-level midfielder, the 24-year-old might not be exactly what they’re looking for, given that he is yet to play in Europe, and has mainly been fighting at the bottom of the Premier League table since leaving Fluminense.

While the Wolves star is now experienced in the Premier League, having made 45 appearances over the past two seasons, there are a number of more exciting options on the shortlist, including Anderson, who is arguably a more rounded midfielder.

Amorim and Wilcox agree on blockbuster Man Utd move for "elite" £80m star

The Red Devils could now make a notable signing that would be represent a statement at Old Trafford.

The 23-year-old amassed eight goal contributions in the Premier League last season, during which time Andre failed to register a single goal or assist, while he is also solid from a defensive point of view, placing in the 91st percentile for tackles per 90 over the past year, compared to other midfielders.

As such, Anderson should be Man United’s top target in midfield, but the £100m+ price tag could be prohibitive, and Forest are in a position to play hardball, as he remains under contract until 2029.

Middlesex teenager Sebastian Morgan narrowly misses maiden career hundred after sharing 179 stand with his captain

Star-Studded 'Let's Go' Coaching Roundtable Tackles the Tough Losses

Jim Gray and Bill Belichick locked down some of the most legendary coaches across sports for a roundtable episode of their podcast this week as Mike Krzyzewski, Nick Saban and Joe Torre all shared their championship insights.

In addition to talking about their philosophy for building winning programs and sustaining a winning culture, the quartet of coaches also delved into how coming so close to winning a title but falling just short is a pain that never goes away.

It's a really interesting conversation and was one because of the environment the coaches were speaking in. The public is not used to getting these candid looks into the psyche and humanness of the greats but being amongst similarly accomplished peers caused the group to be more open.

We went to 13 Final Fours, we won five," Krzyzewski said. "When I look back, we don't have the guys for all these games. You have them for that one little period of time. JJ Redick, who was one of the great players for me, we had a chance in 2004 to win a championship, but we lost in the semis. And he has always said to me, he says, And so I think as coaches and managers, we've had many opportunities, but these guys have a limited amount. And when we are not able to come through in that moment with them, that's what disappoints you more, that loss, the loss of those guys being the ultimate champion.”

"What Mike said really hit home with me," Belichick responded. "Two of the greatest players I've had, both in the Hall of Fame, Junior Seau and Randy Moss, didn't win with us. And I think that I have the same feeling for them that Mike just mentioned with JJ Redick. Those guys were such great players and we came close. It's heartbreaking for me that I couldn't deliver for them.”

“I had the same situation when we had that 3-0 lead on the Red Sox, and then we lost four straight," Torre added. "And the thing that hurt me more than anything, I had Don Mattingly on my coaching staff and Tony Clark on my team, and these guys had never gotten to the World Series. And if there was anything I was sorry about and couldn't get it done, was to have these guys get the taste of winning."

The entire extended conversation is worth a listen. Also worth thinking about is the trend of notoriously guarded or objectively opaque coaches transforming into open books upon retirement. Saban and Belichick are two of the biggest and best examples of this but it's interesting that there's a market for such thoughts. Especially because they are offered so sparingly when a coach is actively coaching.

These stories and touches may be a long time coming and seem overdue, but there's a countless amount of memories and lessons they can draw upon to share in their second acts and media personalities.

West Ham can forget Bilic & Potter by hiring coaching "phenomenon"

It would not be overdoing it to suggest the wheels have well and truly come off at West Ham United this season.

Well, we say this season, but in reality, things have been going wrong for East Londoners for some time, and Graham Potter has not helped.

The former Chelsea manager led the club to a 14th-place finish in the Premier League last year, but as things stand, he has them in the relegation zone, with one win and three losses this year.

Regardless of what happens this weekend, it’s time for the Hammers to find a new coach, and while Slaven Bilic’s name has been thrown around, there is another out-of-work coach who’d be a far better option.

The coaches linked with West Ham

Given the size of the club, it’s not been a surprise to see a host of pretty good managers linked with West Ham over the last couple of weeks.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

One of those has been Gary O’Neil, who has been out of work since being fired from Wolverhampton Wanderers last season.

Now, there is certainly a line of thinking that suggests hiring a manager who was fired by another relegation candidate is a bad idea, but it’s important to remember he also saved the Old Gold and Bournemouth before that from going down.

So, while he might not be the perfect long-term option, he might be worth bringing in for this season to stabilise the ship – he can’t be worse than Potter.

Another, more exciting name touted for the job has been Nuno Espírito Santo.

The Portuguese boss is another one fired by a Premier League side, but it’s really not the same, as after saving Nottingham Forest from relegation, he then led them back into Europe for the first time in generations.

Lastly, as we’ve already mentioned, Bilic has been touted for a return to the London Stadium.

Now, while there is an undeniable romanticism to that idea, there is another free coach who’d be a way better hire.

The manager West Ham should hire over Bilic

There are quite a number of quality managers out of work at the moment, from Marco Rose to Sean Dyche.

However, the one West Ham should be going all out for, and should stand a chance of getting, is Luciano Spalletti.

The Italian coach is currently out of work after being let go by the national team.

Still, fans shouldn’t be put off by the fact that things didn’t work out there, as even Roberto Mancini failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, despite being European champions at the time.

Moreover, it was his record at club level that even earned him the chance to manage the Azzurri, and it is an impressive one.

For example, he won back-to-back promotions with Empoli, two league titles and two cups with Zenit Saint Petersburg, back-to-back Coppa Italias with AS Roma and the big one, Napoli’s first Serie A title in a generation in 22/23.

Unsurprisingly, then, when we hold up his record to Bilic’s, there is only one winner.

During his last spell in club football, the coaching “phenomenon,” as dubbed by former Roma sporting director Walter, oversaw 96 games, of which he won 62, drew 16 and lost 18, resulting in a points per game average of 2.10.

In contrast, Croat’s last job was with Al-Fateh, where he oversaw 36 games, won 13 of them, drew nine and lost 14, which came out to an average of 1.33 points per game.

Ultimately, while Bilic would probably do a better job than Potter, it’s crystal clear that Spalletti would be a far better hire for West Ham.

Guardiola now wants Man City to sign "fantastic" £69m star to replace Silva

Manchester City are looking to make their mark once the January transfer window rolls around, and Pep Guardiola now has his eyes set on a statement signing.

Manchester City icon Bernardo Silva wanted by Benfica

Few players in Manchester City’s history could lay claim to the trophy haul or talent that Bernardo Silva has at his disposal. However, the Portugal international is at the centre of an intriguing storm involving his former club Benfica.

With the Primeira Liga giants set for their presidential elections next month, high-profile candidate Noronha Lopes has confirmed that there is a ‘contract waiting’ for the 31-year-old to sign should he win be installed at Estadio Da Luz.

Bernardo Silva.

“Yes, I confirm that there is a contract waiting for Bernardo Silva. And I really want to bring him already in January. He personifies everything I want for Benfica: identity, a winning culture, and he is a great Benfiquista. And I can guarantee you that we will not stop here.”

Enjoying a magnificent nine-year spell at the Premier League heavyweights, Silva has notched an impressive 72 goals and 73 assists in 410 appearances, though he may well be set for a new challenge if reports are to be believed.

Regardless, Manchester City have Real Madrid star Rodrygo on their list of potential January reinforcements, emphasising that Guardiola is determined to alter his forward line.

Now, the Citizens could be set to step up their search for a replacement should Silva call time on his heroics at the Etihad, per recent developments.

Manchester City want to sign Fermin Lopez in January

According to reports in Spain, Manchester City boss Guardiola has a personal wish to sign Barcelona star Fermin Lopez if Silva does take up the option to return to Lisbon during the January window.

Citing his ability to feature either in central midfield or as a left winger, Guardiola is a big fan of the Spain international, who has produced a return of 11 goals and 19 assists in 90 appearances for the reigning La Liga champions.

Labelled “fantastic” by national boss Luis de la Fuente, Lopez is said to be valued at around the £69 million mark and was previously targeted by Liverpool during the summer transfer window.

Nevertheless, the fact that his contract runs until 2029 at Barcelona could be a source of frustration for Manchester City, who are likely to make a decision on their financial outlook regarding a deal nearer the time. He even shares the same CAA Stellar agency as five Etihad stars, including summer signings James Trafford and Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Even with the window closed, the Citizens are already plotting some serious moves, and it will be intriguing to see whether they can pull off such an exciting capture.
