Chelsea are reportedly closing in on a deal for Mohammed Kudus.
Is Mohammed Kudus signing for Chelsea?
According to Football Insider, the Blues are close to agreeing personal terms with Kudus in what would be a marquee signing.
The fee for the Ajax livewire is expected to be around £40m and the player is keen on the move.
Kudus’ current contract at Ajax expires in 2025, and he rejected a one-year extension in April as he’s open to leaving the club in search of a new experience.
How good is Mohammed Kudus?
After Chelsea’s pre-season draw with Newcastle, Mauricio Pochettino underlined the need to create a squad with “good balance” with players who can “compete for their place.”
The beauty of signing Kudus is his positional versatility, and whilst the Argentine is still trying to trim the books, the addition of the 22-year-old would still be much welcomed.
In this window, the 2021 Champions League winners have already sold Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang.
The Ghanaian, who has been at Ajax since 2020, could be the ideal man to fill the void. Indeed, he has established himself as one of the club’s most productive and esteemed assets, who looks ready to make the next step in his promising career.
This season, Kudus has registered 25 goal involvements in 42 appearances across all competitions and also enjoyed an impressive World Cup, where he scored twice and completed 71% of his dribbles.
Ajax midfielderMohammed Kudus.
The playmaker has demonstrated he is far superior to the level of the Dutch top-flight as he ranks within the best 4% outside of Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for non-penalty goals per 90, pass completion for 90, successful take-ons per 90, and touches in the attacking penalty area per 90.
Outside the Netherlands, he has also shown he is a problematic and potent forward with six-goal contributions in as many games in the Champions League group stage.
His most attractive trait is arguably his frightening versatility – according to The Athletic, in 2,272 minutes in the Eredivisie since the 2021/22 season, Kudus has played 22% of the time as a striker, 40% as a right-winger, 9% as an attacking midfielder and 22% as a central midfielder.
The 5 foot 9 dynamo has looked comfortable across the frontline and this adaptability can make him a formidable asset for Pochettino. If signed, this sort of impact and versatility are two attributes that Salomon Kalou possessed in abundance.
Whilst not a regular starter, the Ivorian was a key component of Chelsea’s success between 2006-2012. During his trophy-laden stint in West London, Kalou played on both wings and as a second striker, positions that Kudus occupies himself.
Despite this, Kalou finished his career in England with 60 goals and 47 assists in 254 appearances, winning a Premier League title, four FA Cups, and a first Champions League triumph for the club.
Salomon Kalou Chelsea
His previous manager Jose Mourinho lauded his talent and flexibility, saying: “He is a player I love to work with because he has everything to be a top, top attacking player.
"I don't say striker or winger, I say attacking player because he can be both. His quality is amazing.”
Therefore, Kudus, who has been described as “electric” by scout Jacek Kulig, could be a crucial attacking component for the upcoming season and can mirror Kalou’s long-lasting influence.
Arsenal have rejected a bid from Monaco for Folarin Balogun and are refusing to compromise on their £50m valuation of the young striker, according to Sky Sports' Dharmesh Sheth.
Is Balogun leaving Arsenal?
Having enjoyed a prolific loan spell at Ligue 1 side Stade Reims last season, Balogun is now ready to find his new permanent home.
While the 22-year-old forward would undoubtedly relish the chance to be a starting striker for Arsenal, he will have to look elsewhere for regular minutes as he sits behind Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah and new acquisition Kai Havertz in the pecking order.
His impressive campaign in France means that his value has skyrocketed from this time last season, with Arsenal having slapped an eye-watering £50m price tag on the United States international.

A number of clubs have been circling the youngster including the likes of Inter, West Ham United and Crystal Palace, but it is Monaco that have seen a bid rejected according to Sheth.
Inter are expected to come back in for Balogun following Gianluca Scamacca's decision to choose Atalanta over the Nerazzurri, but Sheth suggests Arsenal are holding firm on their valuation of their centre-forward.
Speaking on Sky Sports (via Football Daily), Sheth stated: "We're told that Monaco have bid for Folarin Balogun. It was a written offer and it has been rejected by Arsenal.
"Arsenal are not budging at the moment on their valuation of around £50m for Folarin Balogun. He's in the final two years of his contract, but he wants to make that move to get regular first-team football. What we do expect to happen now though is Inter Milan to really push to sign him.
"They were in for Lukaku but he started talking to Juventus, so they said 'thanks but no thanks'. They went in for Balogun again but couldn't agree a fee with Arsenal, so they switched their attention to Gianluca Scamacca. [They] thought they were going to get that deal done, Atalanta came in, they couldn't match the conditions that Atalanta were offering West Ham United, so as we have been mentioning Scamacca is now an Atalanta player.
"So, Inter Milan are refocusing their attention back on to Folarin Balogun. For this deal to be done though, it looks like Arsenal may just need to relax that £50m asking price."
The Gunners' steep asking price is making a deal between Arsenal and Balogun's suitors near impossible as few clubs are capable of splashing that kind of money on a fairly inexperienced young attacker.
Arsenal have reportedly told Balogun to find another club quickly, but as Sheth suggests, they may need to be willing to compromise on their large valuation before that can happen.
Has Balogun played for Arsenal?
Despite it being Balogun's first season of consistent first-team senior football, the two-cap United States forward took no time adjusting to life at the top.
Balogun managed 21 goals and three assists with Reims in Ligue 1 last season, having previously only featured in a limited capacity at Arsenal and Middlesbrough.
In fact, Balogun has only featured ten times for Arsenal's first team, only two of which came in the Premier League. The striker has scored twice for the Gunners, both goals coming in the Europa League during the 2020/21 season against Molde and Dundalk.
The fact that Balogun, who was hailed by Mikel Arteta as "special", only has one season of consistent top-flight football under his belt is perhaps one of the reasons clubs are reluctant to spend big on the forward.
An update has emerged on Wolverhampton Wanderers and their plans to bolster their attacking options ahead of the 2023/24 campaign…
What's the latest Wolves transfer news?
According to Football Insider, Wolves are one of a number of sides eyeing up a swoop to sign Southampton centre-forward Che Adams during the summer transfer window.
Julen Lopetegui is looking to improve his forward line and has seemingly identified the former Birmingham number nine as a player who could provide the team with an added spark at the top end of the pitch.
However, the report claims that fellow Premier League teams Everton and Bournemouth are also interested in the Saints star, who has one year left to run on his current contract at St. Mary's.
Football Insider do not reveal how much it would take to secure the £52k-per-week gem's services this summer but do state that the Championship outfit are willing to sell him if a respectable offer comes in.
How many goals has Che Adams scored for Southampton?
The Scotland international has scored 31 goals in 145 appearances for the Saints in all competitions and could improve Lopetegui's attack this season, as well as being able to make current winger Pedro Neto better.
Adams has scored 21 goals across the last three Premier League campaigns combined, which works out as seven goals per term on average, and was one described as a "ketchup bottle phenomenon" by former manager Ralph Hasenhuttl due to his knack for scoring a number of goals in quick succession.
Meanwhile, no Wolves striker managed more than three top-flight strikes during the 2022/23 season and no player in any position produced more than six.
This suggests that the 27-year-old marksman has the quality to be Lopetegui's outstanding scoring option through the middle of the park if he is able to carry on that form at the Molineux, or even improve upon it.
Southampton striker Che Adams.
His success in front of goal could depend on the service that is provided to him and that is where Neto can play a key role as the Portuguese wizard has been let down by his teammates in recent years.
The former Lazio prospect has created 9.95 xA in the last three Premier League seasons for Wolves and only been rewarded with seven assists, which suggests that his fellow attackers are not making the most of the opportunities that he has been able to create for them.
Neto, who created 2.5 chances per game at the U21 European Championship this summer, could benefit from Adams' arrival as it would provide him with a centre-forward who has the ability to finish on at least a semi-regular basis, whereas the club's current strikers have rarely been able to find the back of the net.
The 23-year-old dynamo has also previously showcased his ability as a scorer, with eight goals in his first two top-flight seasons combined before one in the last two.
Adams could make the left-footed whiz better by being a focal point for the exciting youngster to play off in the final third. The Southampton is able to offer a creative presence as he has racked up 5.58 xA over the last two years and at least three assists in each of the last three campaigns.
Meanwhile, Joao Moutinho (two) was the only Wolves player with more than one assist last term, which suggests that the Scottish ace could provide the club with a boost due to his ability as both a scorer and a creator.
Therefore, the signing of Adams could allow Neto to thrive and get better as it would provide the talented gem with a striker who can both finish off the chances he creates whilst also helping him to add to his own goal tally.
Sunderland kick off their 2023/24 Championship campaign with a match against newly-promoted Ipswich Town at the Stadium of Light next month.
When will Ross Stewart return from injury?
The Black Cats' only senior centre-forward, Ross Stewart, has been out with an Achilles injury since January and it has been reported that he will not be fit for the start of the season.
Tony Mowbray confirmed that the Scotland international has been back out on the grass but is yet to make a return to full team training and is not set to feature against the Tractor Boys on the opening day.
This means that 19-year-old summer signing Luis Semedo could be in line to start up front after his move from Benfica B, despite having yet to make a single senior competitive appearance in his career to date.
Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman and Mowbray could land a dream addition to partner the Portuguese youngster in the attack by bringing Amad Diallo back for a second spell on loan from Manchester United.
The Chronicle recently reported that the Black Cats are monitoring his situation as the Red Devils remain undecided on what they are going to do with him this season, whilst Leicester City and Leeds United are also said to be interested in the young talent.
How many goals did Amad Diallo score last season?
Amad, who was utilised on the right and through the middle as a number ten at times, plundered 14 goals in 29 Championship starts for the club.
The Ivory Coast international, whose talent was dubbed "exceptional" by journalist Josh Bunting, ended the season as Sunderland's top scorer as he managed four more than any other player, with Ross Stewart (ten) the only other attacker who hit double figures.
Only Jack Clarke (21) was directly involved in more goals than the United loanee (17) for the club in the second tier, which illustrates the huge impact he made during his temporary spell at the Stadium of Light.
Former Sunderland loanee Amad Diallo.
The 21-year-old whiz has proven himself to be capable of being a reliable scorer for the Black Cats at Championship level. He would, therefore, alleviate some pressure off Semedo's shoulders by providing a significant goal threat in the number ten position behind the teenage marksman.
Amad could arrive and be the go-to man for goals in Stewart's continued absence, starting with the match against Ipswich, if Sunderland are able to secure another deal for the talented youngster.
Having a player of the £28k-per-week dynamo's quality, along with Clarke, who scored nine league goals last season, could help Semedo to settle into the season instead of feeling the pressure to need to hit the ground running as the starting number nine.
The 19-year-old ace scored an impressive 21 goals in 44 games for Benfica's U23 side and managed ten goals in 14 Youth League outings prior to his switch to England.
This suggests that the potential is there for him to be a regular scorer but he is yet to prove himself in a senior environment, which is why having the likes of Clarke and Amad to carry the immediate goalscoring burden this season would be a dream situation for him.
The governance process to rebuild USA cricket in the wake of the USA Cricket Association’s expulsion in June takes another step forward this week as ICC Americas staff begins a series of town hall forum meetings around the country. The overarching aim is to create a governance structure under a new constitution to achieve the ICC’s repeatedly stated goal of “unifying the cricket community” according to the ICC’s USA project manager Eric Parthen.”Leading into the expulsion, obviously we continued to try and work with USACA and get them to reform with the new constitution,” Parthen told ESPNcricinfo in a recent interview ahead of the first town hall meetings to take place this week in New York City and Washington, DC. “That didn’t happen. So at the ICC annual conference we had a unanimous board decision and a unanimous full council decision to expel USACA. In the wake of that, we’ve done exactly what we said we were going to do and continue to focus on developing a national governing body that can unify the cricket community.”We will ultimately use the constitution that was created by the sustainable foundation group, potentially make a few tweaks to incorporate in the state of Colorado instead of the state of New York, but by all intents and purposes it will be the same document that was created by the cricket community and was proposed to USACA. We’ll use that document to ultimately elect a new board of directors that will then assume authority and hopefully by June of 2018 be before the ICC as a national governing body or federation for the United States in the sport of cricket.”Parthen says that despite USACA’s unwillingness to adopt the revised constitution put forward to them by the ICC’s Sustainable Foundation Advisory Group, the final straw preceding USACA’s expulsion as an ICC Associate Member, he is making it clear that current or former members of USACA are more than welcome to throw their hat in the ring to be a part of the new federation. That includes longtime USACA president Gladstone Dainty, a controversial figure whom many current and past administrators blame for the stymying the growth of cricket in the country.”This has never been about one individual,” Parthen said when asked about whether Dainty and other USACA executives would be welcome to run for office given the contentious nature of USACA’s expulsion. “This process has been about unifying the community. So whether it is Gladstone or somebody else from ACF, we’re going to put trust in a unified body to make good decisions for the directors that will ultimately be elected.”When we look at the board makeup, there’s going to be two athletes elected both male and female that will serve as a check and balance, there will be three independent directors that will serve as a check and balance. There will be some individuals elected by clubs and leagues and then there will be individual elected seats by the full membership. So we believe there’s enough checks and balances there to get the right people elected. If anyone is elected, I’d hope that they went through a great process that showed they have the majority of people interested in seeing them lead this organisation.”One of the main areas of focus for Parthen’s office in Colorado Springs is establishing a database to collect information about the wider cricket community. The purpose is to establish better communication channels but also to make sure as many constituents as possible are identified and registered to be able to take part in elections which are anticipated to be held in early 2018.”We want to set up a governing body that’s a governing body for all forms of the sport: softball cricket, hardball cricket, disabled cricket, all forms of cricket we think the national federation should ultimately govern,” Parthen said. “That’s why we’re focused on creating a database that can manage all of those pieces and ultimately communicate with all of those pieces.”Clubs, coaches, athletes, umpires, administrators, fans, we want them all to be a part of this new national federation, have a voice in the new national federation and ultimately be a part of it. So that database needs to be able to support all aspects of it. Once the database is created, we’ll shoot to have membership open in November of 2017 and ultimately elections starting in January 2018 with hopefully a finishing point of April 2018 where we have a new board of directors and a new national federation to govern the sport of cricket in the United States.”One of the ironic aspects of USACA’s suspension and expulsion has been that instead of having their ICC funding stopped – as was the case in previous suspensions and what occurs when most countries are suspended – their ICC funding mushroomed. USACA had been getting approximately $300,000 annually from the ICC prior to suspension but the caretaker administration in the USA has been operating on an annual budget between $2 and $2.5 million, equivalent to Ireland and Afghanistan before their elevation to Full Membership. When the new national governing body is put in place, the funding assistance from the ICC is expected to revert to pre-suspension levels. However, Parthen is optimistic that the new governing body will be able to maintain if not exceed those funding levels independent of help from the ICC.”The $2-2.5 million, we think that’s a drop in the bucket compared to what this country potentially could produce,” Parthen said. “The ICC hasn’t commercialised any aspect of this sport. A typical national federation in any other sport – USA Swimming, USA Basketball, Cricket Australia, you name it – are commercialising parts of the game and we have not done that.”We are very bullish and we hope the new national federation will be very bullish on the opportunities that exist for growing the amount of revenue that we can ultimately support cricket in the United States with. We hope that far dwarfs the $2-2.5 million that the ICC has supported this country with and I’d argue that in the time that I’ve been here, I certainly see those potential opportunities and I’d be disappointed if we only function on a $2.5 million budget in this sport moving forward.”Parthen was also in Florida during CPL weekend last month where staff and volunteers surveyed fans in person and online to seek out opinions on designing a logo for the new national federation. A new logo is something he feels is an important symbolic step in rehabilitating the image of USA cricket as they chart a new path with the formation of a fresh national governing body.”Specifically with the logo, we want it to represent the United States,” Parthen said. “This is a United States federation. So the imagery will be red, white and blue, USA, speak to cricket, hopefully speak to our identity as a sport with over 300 years of history in the United States but also do so in a way that is more progressive, more forward-thinking, looking forward, more exciting, a new future and a new era for cricket.”One thing that came out in our surveys is that we need to be thoughtful of both our past and our present. We’re very optimistic and bullish on what the future of USA cricket can be but we also need to keep in mind what our past is and the history that we have in the United States.”
Surrey condemn “irresponsible act” and promise own investigation as ground evacuated and Championship match against Middlesex abandoned
Vithushan Ehantharajah31-Aug-2017Armed police were called to the final day of Surrey versus Middlesex in the County Championship after a crossbow bolt was fired onto the field, abandoning play on the afternoon of the fourth day.Police believe the 12-inch long metal-tipped bolt travelled around 800 metres before coming to ground about ten yards from the pitch. The incident took place at 4.20pm, during the 69th over of Middlesex’s second innings. The players alerted the umpires, Michael Gough and Paul Baldwin, who acted quickly to take the players off the field – a number of them sprinting towards the changing room.Fifteen minutes later, the Metropolitan police had been made aware of the incident, at which point officers, including firearm officers, made their way to the Kia Oval.It was at this point that an announcement was made across the PA system at the ground for spectators and those in the open to “find cover”. Another announcement followed, urging people to move inside.A full search of the ground was carried out by police and around 30 security staff. The game was abandoned at 5.05pm by which time around 1,000 spectators had been informed that they could leave. The Metropolitan Police believe the bolt was fired from outside the ground, though they are unsure as to whether the bolt was fired deliberately or whether it was targeted at The Oval. They have, at this stage, stated that the incident is not being treated as terrorism related.Richard Gould, Surrey’s chief executive, speaking after play was officially called off, said: “It had a pointed end and stuck in the turf when it crossed the outfield and landed.”We are investigating reports that there was a noise on the roof of the OCS Stand but we haven’t been able to get up there to investigate whether it was the projectile ricocheting off the roof or a separate projectile. It is the sort of thing that could easily have been fired some distance from outside the ground if it came from a crossbow. It could very easily have killed someone.”We may never find out if it was a deliberate act, but in these heightened times these sorts of acts are wholly irresponsible.”People should not feel threatened in this way. If it is more than mischief-making then we need to find the perpetrators. We will review our security arrangements but threats can be so wide-ranging.”There is probably no way of securing against this type of incident if it was fired from outside. We always try and provide the safest type of environment but it can be very difficult to stop this kind of act.”Surrey’s captain Gareth Batty, who was fielding 25-yards away from where the arrow landed, said: “It was a pretty tasty arrow with a proper metal end. I did archery as a kid and that was not a normal archery arrow. The umpires dealt with it very well. There were no questions asked – we went off very quickly.”Someone saw it in flight, there was a noise when it landed but it happened so quick. It is a deadly weapon for sure. If it had hit someone it would have caused some serious damage. It just shows the world we live in.Surrey chief executive Richard Gould promised a full investigation•Getty Images
“You have to be diligent, it would be stupid not to be but if you’re constantly worrying about what is going to happen that is not a great place to be. If it is a crossbow rather than a longbow it is probably someone messing around and not understanding the implications of firing something into the air.”Let’s hope it’s a couple of people who will feel pretty ashamed in the morning when they realise what happened.”The Surrey players were in shock as they waited in the dressing room. Some only heard the bolt through the air before it hit the ground, with one player stating it “would have taken out a drive-man at midwicket”. Surrey vice-captain Rory Burns, stationed at orthodox midwicket, was the closest player to the bolt when it landed. Some players thought it had made its way into the ground from the direction of the Gas CylindersOfficers took statements from the players, before giving them the all clear to leave the ground shortly after six o’clock, as part of what the Metropolitan police described as “a controlled evacuation”.The match itself was abandoned as a draw: Middlesex establishing a second-innings lead of 181 after Sam Curran’s spell of three wickets in 10-balls had threatened to turn the game Surrey’s way, reducing Middlesex to 38 for 3 – a lead of just five.A battling 88 not out from John Simpson kept the defending Champions safe, before the umpires, Surrey County Cricket Club staff and the Metropolitan police were called to ensure the safety of them and everyone else.
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly still plotting a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender, Edmond Tapsoba, with the Lilywhites also seemingly keen to wrap up a deal for fellow centre-back, Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg.
How much will Edmond Tapsoba cost?
According to journalist Patrick Berger, the north London outfit are ready to make a bid of around €45m (£39m) in order to prise the 24-year-old from the BayArena, albeit with the Bundesliga side still hoping to keep hold of the Burkina Faso international this summer.
Writing on Twitter, the transfer insider revealed: "Tottenham Hotspur are pushing to sign Edmond Tapsoba (24). Been told the Premier League side is planning to make a new offer of €45m + add ons but Bayer Leverkusen want way more. The German club normally doesn’t want to sell the centre-back."
Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…
As per the Evening Standard's Dan Kilpatrick, while Spurs are said to be closing in on a £30m deal for Van de Ven, the signing of another central defender is not out of the question, with 'negotiations' still ongoing regarding a move for Tapsoba.
How good is Edmond Tapsoba?
The 6 foot 4 rock – who has been valued at €30m (£26m) by CIES Football Observatory – has caught the attention as a result of his fine displays in Germany in recent years, having initially made the move to Leverkusen from Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimaraes back in the summer of 2020.
Since then, the "elegant" asset – as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig – has racked up 137 appearances in all competitions for his current side, having been described as a 'powerful and super quick defender who boasts frightening heading abilities', according to the Bundesliga website.
Despite that glowing praise, those of a Tottenham persuasion may be concerned to learn that Tapsoba has previously been likened to ex-Chelsea flop Kalidou Kouliably in the recent past by Kulig, with that unlikely to spark much confidence with regard to the impact he can make in the Premier League.
That similarity can notably be seen by their lack of a dominant, physical presence in the heart of the backline, with Tapsoba ranking in just the bottom 37% among those in his position in Europe's top five leagues for aerial duels won per 90, while his centre-back counterpart ranks in just the bottom 35% for that same metric.
In the case of Kouliably, the 6 foot 1 brute was snapped up by the Blues on a £33m deal from Napoli last summer, having previously been dubbed the "best defender in the world" by former Genoa coach, Claudio Onofri, due to his form in Italy.
Despite the high expectation following his move to Stamford Bridge, the Senegalese defender was an undoubted disappointment during his one and only season at Stamford Bridge, having been blasted by pundit Ian Wright for looking "nervy".
Such were the 32-year-old's woes last season, he has since secured a swift exit from the club in order to join Saudi Arabian side, Al Hilal, with ESPN pundit Stewart Robson remarking that the towering dud simply wasn't "the formidable defender that he was when he was at Napoli".
To then find a potential heir to Koulibaly in the form of Tapsoba could prove to be something of a mistake for those in north London, with Postecoglou and co likely not wanting to splash the cash on a deal that could come back to bite them.
