Aston Villa: Report drops major Ollie Watkins contract update

Aston Villa fans could be in dreamland for the second time in a few days following their victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge as Unai Emery's men are now confident of being able to agree a big new contract at Villa Park, as per reports.

What's the latest news involving Aston Villa?

According to Calciomercato via TEAMtalk, Juventus are keen on Aston Villa loanee Nicolo Zaniolo despite his bright start to life in the West Midlands and may try to make a surprise swoop for the Italy international next summer.

Zaniolo has previously shown interest in moving to Juventus and it is said that 'anything can happen' with his future; however, it remains to be seen if Aston Villa will look to strike a permanent deal with Galatasaray for the 24-year-old. At the same time, a lot would depend on the financial capability of Italian giants Juventus, something which has been called into question in recent months.

Aston Villa managed to pick themselves up in exemplary fashion away to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, recording a victory over their ten-man opposition thanks to a strike from Ollie Watkins in the 73rd minute, as per BBC Sport. Chelsea defender Malo Gusto was sent off for a lunge on Lucas Digne at the 58th-minute mark, enabling Aston Villa to gain control for the rest of proceedings and subsequently find a way to win in west London, moving Emery's men up to sixth in the Premier League standings.

Speaking to the media post-match, Emery applauded his side's resilience in the wake of damaging defeats to both Newcastle United and Liverpool this term, stating: "We needed to find a way where we were stronger than we were against Newcastle and Liverpool. Today was tough but we competed very well."

Who could sign a new deal at Aston Villa?

According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are still working to tie England international striker Watkins down to a new deal in the West Midlands and there is now 'confidence' from all sides that a new contract will be agreed very soon. Watkins is believed to be happy at Aston Villa and the new deal will include a sizeable upturn in his wage expenditure alongside his responsibility of leading the line under Emery.

Aston Villa'sOllieWatkinsreacts

Torquay-born Watkins has been an integral part of the furniture at Aston Villa since joining the club in 2020 and has gone on to rack up 47 goals and 15 assists in 125 appearances in all competitions for the Villans, as per Transfermarkt.

Once again proving to be a nuisance for defenders this term, Watkins has averaged 2.7 shots and 1.7 key passes per match so far in the Premier League in 2023/24, according to WhoScored.

Labelled "outstanding" by former Aston Villa boss Dean Smith back in 2021, Watkins has also shown his selfless side this campaign, successfully mustering 19 shot-creating actions in the English top flight, with five directly leading to goals, as per FBRef.

Sunderland: Black Cats star has seen his value rise by 5,032%

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman and head coach Tony Mowbray have built up a squad that is full of talented young prospects on Wearside.

The Black Cats have placed a clear focus on bringing in players who have the potential to develop and increase in value over the last few years.

They have tried to snap up young talents with upside in the hope that they will be able to improve under the manager and coaching staff's work on the training pitch and in matches in order to sell them on for a significant profit further down the line.

This was on full display over the summer transfer window as the club sold Ross Stewart to Championship rivals Southampton for a reported £12m package, which includes £8m up front.

They had signed him from Scottish side Ross County for a reported fee of £300k in January of 2021 and this means that his value soared by a whopping 3,900% in less than three years at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland will now be looking at their current crop of players to see who the next major sale could be and one player who is quickly moving up on the list is central midfielder Pierre Ekwah.

How much was Ekwah worth at West Ham?

The French prospect arrived from West Ham United during the January transfer window and FootballTransfers placed an Expected Transfer Value (xTV) of €65k (£52k) on his head at the time of the move.

Ekwah, who had joined the Hammers from Chelsea in 2021, caught the eye with his performances for the Premier League side at youth level and convinced the Black Cats that he was ready to make the step up to first-team level.

The midfield maestro racked up 39 appearances for West Ham's U21 team throughout his time at the London Stadium and was able to showcase his ability in and out of possession.

Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah.

He produced nine goals and three assists in those matches and plundered an impressive five goals in 11 Premier League 2 outings during the first half of the 2022/23 campaign before his move to the Stadium of Light.

This showed that the central midfielder had the potential to offer an attacking threat from a midfield position as he has a knack for bursting forward to chip in with goal contributions at the top end of the pitch.

Ekwah also displayed his quality against senior opposition in three EFL Trophy appearances for West Ham in the first half of last season.

He averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.00 across three matches in the competition and contributed with two tackles and interceptions and two key passes per game, to go along with a duel success rate of 54%.

This showed, albeit in a small sample size, that the French talent could hold his own, physically, against professional players, and had the ability to provide quality on the ball by creating chances for his teammates.

How many appearances has Ekwah made for Sunderland?

The 21-year-old dynamo has made 25 first-team appearances for Sunderland since he made the move from West Ham earlier this year and has established himself as a regular for Mowbray as it stands.

However, it has not been an easy ride for the French talent throughout the year as he did not hit the ground running during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign.

Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah.

It was his first experience of regular league football and Ekwah's performances lacked consistency. He averaged an unimpressive Sofascore rating of 6.57 across 14 Championship matches, five of which came as starts.

22 of his teammates averaged higher Sofascore ratings throughout the season and this suggests that he was considerably far away from being one of Mowbray's best performers last term.

However, the Sunderland head coach placed his faith in Ekwah at the start of the 2023/24 campaign and it is currently paying off for the former Blackburn boss.

The France U20 international, who was hailed as "vital" to the side by journalist Josh Bunting, has averaged a terrific Sofascore rating of 7.27 across six starts in the Championship, which is the fifth-best score within the squad.

This shows that he has gone from being one of the least impressive performers on Wearside to the point where the talented Frenchman is now one of the leading lights for the Black Cats as it stands.

Ekwah, who scored two goals in the 5-0 win over Southampton earlier this month, has caught the eye with his reliable passing and strong defensive play. He has completed 90% of his attempted passes and made three tackles and interceptions per game, as per Sofascore, which is the second-most of any player within the squad.

How much is Ekwah worth now?

At the time of writing (28/09/2023), FootballTransfers has the central midfielder's xTV at €3.4m (£2.9m) and this shows that his market value has rocketed up over the course of the year.

His xTV has increased by a staggering 5,032% from the initial €65k (£56.5k) that he was valued at when Sunderland swooped to sign him from West Ham at the start of the year.

Therefore, Mowbray has struck gold with the impressive youngster as he has developed into an impressive Championship midfield option for the head coach and his market value has reflected that.

The Black Cats boss has been able to turn Ekwah from an unproven U21 performer for the Hammers into a key cog in his first-team set-up at the Stadium of Light in less than a year, which is a credit to his coaching and management skills alongside the player's adaptability and willingness to learn.

Hopefully, he can continue to go from strength to strength and increase his xTV even further over the coming months and years. If his performances continue to catch the eye in the Championship then he could end up being the next Stewart to rake in a huge profit for the club if he attracts attention from elsewhere.

However, Sunderland may prefer him to be part of a promotion-winning side so that they can afford to keep hold of their top talents and then progress to the next level in the Premier League.

Man Utd: PL winner under Fergie without club for TWO years after L2 release

Manchester United have been blessed with having one of the most famous academy programs in world football.

Through the history of the Red Devils, the club has prided itself on its ability to bring young players through and integrate them into the first team, so much so that last season they celebrated 85 years of having an academy graduate in the match day squad for every game. That is over 4,000 consecutive games.

The Busby Babes that changed the way football was played in the 1950s and 60s included the likes of Duncan Edwards, George Best, and Sir Bobby Charlton.

The latter two were Ballon D'or winners and if not for Edwards' untimely death, he may have been too.

Comparisons have been made not just to the best football stars, but to the biggest sports icons, with former coach Jimmy Murphy once recounting:

"When I used to hear Muhammad Ali proclaim to the world that he was the greatest, I would always smile. The greatest of them all was a footballer named Duncan Edwards."

Then there was the 'class of '92.' Beckham, Butt, Giggs, the Nevilles, and Scholes.

All part of the same generation of youth players, who rose into the first team, defying the odds after Alan Hansen famously claimed: "you can't win anything with kids."

Their defining moment came in 1999 when they achieved the first-ever treble in British football.

Many young United players have tried to replicate their success and failed. But for one person, the story is particularly disappointing.

For Darron Gibson, his career looked like it had promise. He could've been a Red Devil for life.

Instead, he had a career full of "regret"…

When did Gibson make his Man United debut?

Gibson made his debut for United in 2005, coming off the bench in a League Cup fixture against Barnet. He was part of a team that included the likes of Ji-Sung Park and Gerard Pique.

That would be the only action the Irishman would see that season, but the following year saw him sent on loan to Belgium to play for now Champions League side Royal Antwerp.

This was a valuable affair for Gibson who returned from his loan spell with a first-team experience under his belt and looking to make a solid impression on the senior team.

Over the years, the midfielder started to have moments that really made him stand out in red. His first Premier League goal was a screamer of a goal from outside the box against Hull City in 2009.

By 2010, the academy graduate was really starting to make a career for himself. Perhaps his finest individual moment came in the Champions League against Bayern Munich, where he once again scored from outside the box as United won 3-2 on the night but were knocked out on away goals.

Gibson's performances started to receive recognition from the highest of places. Boss Sir Alex Ferguson would compare him to the legendary Scholes, saying of Gibson's contributions to the team.

"It is the kind of contribution we used to get from Paul Scholes," Ferguson said. "He used to get me 12 to 14 goals from midfield all the time, and we haven't had a player like that in a while."

The comparisons with Scholes were easy to understand as they shared similar traits.

Like his predecessor, Gibson had an eye for long-range passes and a cannon of a shot.

He even said himself on Manchester United's official podcast that "Every time I get a chance I’m shooting. But it worked. A few of them flew in for me."

Unfortunately, Ferguson spoke too soon. Injuries combined with Manchester United already having the likes of Scholes, Carrick, Park, and Fletcher in midfield meant that game time became limited for the 6-foot playmaker.

He left Manchester in 2012 having made 60 appearances for United, netting 10 goals, and lifting a Premier League title during his time there.

Who did Gibson join after United?

The then 24-year-old joined Everton in 2012 for around £500k. Ironically, he cited the man he had once been compared to as the reason for his departure from United, telling The Guardian: "When Scholesy came back [from retirement], the manager told me I was free to go."

A new opportunity beckoned for the Republic of Ireland international. He made an immediate impression, scoring a winner against the eventual title winners, Man City, less than a month after joining the club.

That would turn out to be the highest point of Gibson's career at Everton. He only managed another 5 goals, bringing his total to six in 69 appearances between 2012-2017.

Once again, injuries massively derailed Everton's no.4, causing him to miss a total of 678 days due to injury during his five-year spell at the club.

Off-field incidents didn't help the player either, with Gibson being arrested in 2015 for a drink-driving offence.

This marked the lowest point of his career, and he would play his last ever game in the Premier League during the 2016/2017 season.

Did Gibson play international football?

Gibson made his debut for the Republic of Ireland in 2007.

At just 19 years old, he came off the bench in a 4-0 drubbing of a Denmark side that contained the likes of Daniel Agger and Nicklas Bendtner.

In total, the midfielder would go on to feature 26 times for his country, scoring once.

Although many would be proud of that achievement, the former United man spoke of his biggest regret regarding his international career.

Gibson claimed he was "embarrassed and so angry that I didn't actually get on the pitch for even a second at the Euros" in 2012.

His lack of playing time in the competition left him to rule himself out of selection under manager Giovanni Trappatoni.

The Irishman confessed that he "regret not playing," however, he stood by his right to be frustrated, as he wasn't even used as a substitute in the tournament.

He made his final appearance for Ireland in 2016.

What happened to Darron Gibson?

After leaving Everton, Gibson joined Sunderland as the Black Cats looked to reinforce the squad to ensure Premier League survival.

Their efforts however were unsuccessful, with the side getting relegated at the end of the season. This would mark the final time the 29-year-old would play top-flight football.

With the aim being to jump straight back up, Gibson was seen as someone with valuable experience who would be important for Sunderland's promotion hopes.

Instead, he managed just 15 games in the Championship that season, with his most notable incident again occurring off the pitch.

The former Premier League winner was filmed by fans whilst clearly drunk at a pub. During his interaction with them, he would criticise his teammates and the clip would later go viral.

It ended up receiving worldwide attention after it was used by Netflix in the 'Sunderland 'Til I Die" documentary series.

Gibson would float about for the remainder of his career, featuring for Wigan Athletic and finishing his professional career in League Two, for the team part-owned by the man he was tipped to emulate Paul Scholes, Salford City.

Gibson appeared to have retired, but he has most recently signed for Wythenshawe Amateurs who play in the North West Counties Football League Premier Division.

From the Champions League to Sunday league, it has been a true fall from grace for the man who Sir Alex Ferguson backed to score him double-digit goals every season.

Rangers: Beale must unleash £12k-p/w gem who made a ‘big difference’ vs Livi

Glasgow Rangers secured their biggest win of the season last night, defeating Livingston 4-0 in what turned out to be a rather comfortable League Cup encounter.

The result sends the Gers into the semi-finals of the competition for the third year in a row and although Michael Beale isn’t quite out of the woods yet, there were no boos at Ibrox following the win.

Progress is progress, but this performance will be in vain unless the Light Blues secure all three points against Aberdeen at the weekend and the 43-year-old may be buoyed by a few of his players following their display last night.

Who scored for Rangers against Livingston?

The Ibrox side took an early lead via a wonderful finish from Abdallah Sima, who cut in from the left-hand side and struck a right-foot shot into the far corner.

The match stayed this way until the 66th minute when Ridvan Yilmaz embarked on a solo run that ended up with him scoring the second goal and all but securing the victory.

Late goals by Sima and Ryan Jack were the cherry on top and truthfully, the game should have been over way before then, yet the performance was much better compared to the Motherwell tie last week.

Yilmaz’s performance was arguably the most pleasing aspect of the night and the defender finally looks like he could make a claim for a regular spot in the left-back position during the remainder of the campaign.

Will Ridvan Yilmaz replace Borna Barisic?

Following his first goal for the club, former Ibrox striker Kenny Miller dubbed him “incredible” and he certainly offers something different from the Croatian, that’s for sure.

Rangers stars Fashion Sakala and Ridvan Yilmaz.

Barisic has averaged 3.3 crosses per game in the Premiership this term along with making 2.8 key passes per match, yet he has lost possession a staggering 17.8 times each outing. This indicates that while he tends to push forward often, he is being caught out regularly and this isn’t helping the club from a defensive point of view.

Yilmaz on the other hand, didn’t push forward up the left-hand side as often as Barisic would have, but he offered a greater threat by drifting into the middle of the pitch, providing an option for a wide range of teammates.

His goal was a prime example as he burst through the heart of the pitch before unleashing a shot that the goalkeeper had no chance of saving. Rangers Review journalist Joshua Barrie ultimately hailed the youngster.

He said: “Brilliant play from Ridvan Yilmaz, that's the variation of options he gives you!

“Runs the full length of the Livingston half driving beyond two men before finishing from range. That's some goal from your left back.”

He also marvelled at his playing style giving the Gers another few options, saying: “Think Ridvan's forward running and combination play has made a big difference tonight. Just gives you more options, and the opposition a greater variety of problems.”

It’s evident that if the £12k-per-week gem stays fit and healthy over the coming weeks, the defender certainly deserves to be unleashed on a regular run in the starting XI in order to gain more confidence and showcase his abilities on a more consistent basis.

After last night’s display, I don’t think anyone would have any complaints, that’s for sure.

Chelsea: Blues put "generational" £55m talent on January transfer shortlist

The summer transfer window has just closed in the Premier League but this hasn’t stopped Chelsea from identifying a potential new to join Stamford Bridge in January.

The Blues have already spent a jaw-dropping £450m so far this season as Todd Boehly looks to topple Manchester City’s recent Premier League dominance.

What’s the latest on Chelsea's interest in Benjamin Sesko?

According to a source for GiveMeSport, Chelsea will look to dip back into the transfer market in January as they have identified RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško as a potential target.

The two-time Champions League winners have so far signed 12 new players whom they deem to be undervalued and will be looking to fire the Blues back into the Champions League following an underwhelming season.

Along with Sesko, the Chelsea recruitment team has also pinpointed Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins as the other two potential candidates.

The Slovenian international has only just moved to RB Leipzig from sister club RB Salzburg in the summer after impressing in Austria.

Leipzig had to fork out a reported £55m for the rangy striker's services which could mean that the west London giants will have to pay a hefty transfer fee if they are to obtain Sesko in January.

CIES Football Observatory, meanwhile, currently value him at €40m (£36m).

Who is Sesko?

The 20-year-old gem is one of the most promising players in the world and could adhere to Chelsea’s youth-oriented transfer strategy.

The 6 foot 4 striker scored 29 times in 79 matches for RB Salzburg prior to his move to RB Leipzig.

According to WhoScored, Sesko won 1.5 aerial duels a game for Salzburg last season which could be useful in a physical league like the Premier League where set pieces can be vital for three points.

If Chelsea wants to keep their youth-oriented transfer strategy Sesko may be their man for the job.

His 2.5 shots per 90 show he’s not afraid to pull the trigger and Chelsea has previously struggled for goals with Kai Havertz being the club’s top goalscorer last season with seven goals in the Premier League.

Why do Chelsea want Sesko?

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

According to the aforementioned report, Toney has also been identified as the primary transfer target for Chelsea.

However, Brentford’s key man is currently serving an eight-month ban for breaches of the Football Association's betting rules and won’t be returning until January 16th. This could make negotiating tricky with the Blues only having a limited time to get the deal over the line and due to Toney being Premier League-proven their price quoted could be extortionate.

Chelsea only has Nicolas Jackson available for selection as Christopher Nkunku is out for the foreseeable future and will undergo surgery.

It may be seen as smart for Mauricio Pochettino to invest in more squad depth in January. Sesko is seen as a player yet to hit his peak and could be a vital member at Stamford Bridge for the next 10 years.

Stats of linked Chelsea strikers, as per WhoScored

Games Goals Assists Aerial duels won per game Shots per 90
Benjamin Šeško 30 16 4 1.5 2.2
Ivan Toney 33 20 4 3.3 2.8
Ollie Watkins 36 15 6 1.9 2.3

Not to mention the fact that both players are homegrown England internationals and will come at an even bigger premium, in comparison to the "generational" talent that is Sesko, as lauded by journalist Ryan Taylor.
Given the evidence above, it's easy to see why the Slovakia sensation is among the list of potential targets for Pochettino and Boehly this winter.

Sussex look to Ishant as Kent hold slight edge

ScorecardKent hold a slight edge over Sussex in an engaging clash at the top of Division Two after ending the second day with a 159-run lead with six wickets remaining.Ollie Robinson, Sussex’s allrounder, believes Sussex need to strike quickly on Sunday. “The overheads today have been more helpful for the bowlers with a bit of cloud around and the wicket has a bit of live grass in it, which always helps with a bit of nip,” he said. “Anything under 250 we’ll fancy our chances, any more than that, then it’s possibly in Kent’s favour.”When bad light stopped play soon at 5pm, Kent’s fifth-wicket partners Zak Crawley and Adam Rouse had contributed 31 to the cause in the face of a fiery, two for 26 bowling stint from India pace bowler Ishant Sharma.Batting for a second time, with a potentially precious lead of 34, Kent lost Daniel Bell-Drummond nine balls in when the out-of-sorts opener fenced at a lifting leg-cutter from Ishant to be caught behind.Ishant also accounted for Sean Dickson with another, near unplayable delivery, this time a shooting off-cutter that grubbed back into the right-hander and pegged back off stump as Dickson shouldered arms.Kuhn and his acting captain Joe Denly added 55 either side of tea but their third-wicket stand was broken after 11.5 overs when Robinson rushed one through bat and pad to win an appeal for a catch at the wicket.Three balls after taking a blow on the right hand from South African compatriot David Wiese, Kuhn, when just three runs short of his second 50 of the match, nicked Wiese’s awayswinger to second slip.Kent had earlier dismissed Sussex for 181 inside 44 overs. Kiwi paceman Matt Henry was again the pick of the home attack, claiming 4 for 69 overall, as the hosts claimed one wicket during a rain-ruined first session of 11.4 overs.Henry had Luke Wright caught at second slip following a hesitant defensive prod 12 minutes into the second day, after which Kent returned following an early lunch to polish the job off – taking the last five Sussex wickets for 63 runs – despite losing seamer Grant Stewart from their attack with a recurrence of his hamstring injury.Ben Brown and Michael Burgess eased the Sussex total into three figures in adding 40 for the sixth wicket but the partnership ended during a highly unusual double-wicket maiden soon after lunch.Brown, on 30 and with his side still 97 in arrears, aimed to pull a good length delivery from Italian-born all-rounder Stewart, only to chop the ball onto his stumps. Stewart limped off three balls later with a hamstring niggle, leaving Ivan Thomas to bowl one delivery to complete the over. Robinson, the next man in, made a late decision to shoulder arms to a Thomas awayswinger but succeeded in toe-ending a catch to keeper Adam Rouse. The Sussex tail, led by Burgess and Wiese, continued to counter attack adding 40 in six overs. Henry gave way after bowling 10 overs either side of lunch and his replacement, Calum Haggett struck with his first delivery of the match having Wiese caught in the gully off a sliced drive.Burgess, on 54, finally perished taking one risk too many. Smearing across the line against Podmore, he holed out to cow corner to gift Podmore a second scalp and Kent their modest lead.

Wolves "considering" making move for exciting PSG prospect

Wolves are still lacking genuine depth in attacking areas at the moment, but that could be about to change in January, following a fresh transfer update.

How has Gary O'Neil done at Wolves?

Wanderers ended up pulling away from the relegation zone in the Premier League last season, with Julen Lopetegui doing an impressive job as manager. There were genuine hopes that the Spaniard could continue turning his side into a more of a force moving forward, but he abruptly left during the summer, acting as a real shock and a setback.

Gary O'Neil has come in and replaced Lopetegui in the Molineux hot seat, and while there have been some positive performances against bid sides, not enough points have been accumulated. Wanderers have been involved in tight tussles with the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool, for example, but lost both games and are languishing towards the bottom-end of the table.

One issue for Wolves has been a lack of firepower in attack, which was also a shortcoming that held them back too often last year. For that reason, there is no question that new signings are needed in that area of the pitch, and it looks as though that could be addressed in the near future, following a fresh claim.

Which attacker could Wolves make a move for?

According to Le10Sport [via Sport Witness], Wolves are among the clubs interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain youngster Hugo Ekitike in the January transfer window, who reportedly "risks paying dearly" for not moving away during the summer transfer window, with minutes hard to come by for the Ligue 1 champions.

It is stated that Wanderers are "considering" making a move for the 21-year-old, but the likes of AC Milan, Everton and West Ham are all mentioned as potential suitors, too. Ekitike could be precisely what Wolves need midway through the season, with the youngster clearly in need of a new challenge.

There is no shame in the Frenchman not quite making the grade at PSG, considering he has been surrounded by the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in recent times, but he has still managed to score and assist four times apiece for the European giants.

Former Reims manager Oscar Garcia is clearly someone who rates Ekitike highly as a footballer, with the Spaniard saying once saying of him:

"There is something very special about him. He’s young, and he has the quality to become a very good player. He’s a young man with a lot of quality but also a lot to improve on, but he works hard in training.”

Granted, Ekitike is still a young player learning his trade, but he could provide Wolves with much-needed ammunition in the final third of the pitch, coming in and hopefully bolstering their attacking quality during the second half of the season. He would also be a long-term option, given his age, ensuring that Wanderers plan for both the present and the future.

A case of win or cross-your-fingers for KKR

If Kolkata Knight Riders win, they are assured of a place in the top four. If they lose, their path to the playoffs gets increasingly complicated

The Preview by Nikhil Kalro18-May-20183:51

Agarkar: Curran over Searles for KKR

Form guide

Sunrisers Hyderabad: lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore by 14 runs, lost to Chennai Super Kings by eight wickets, beat Delhi Daredevils by nine wickets.
Kolkata Knight Riders: beat Rajasthan Royals by six wickets, beat Kings XI Punjab by 31 runs, lost to Mumbai Indians by 102 runs.

Big PictureIn any tournament, the ideal scenario for a team would be to have qualified for the playoffs before the final round of fixtures. If that’s not possible, the next best case would be to have your fate dictated by your own performance, instead of depending on other results. Sunrisers Hyderabad have the former and Kolkata Knight Riders, the latter, going into the final weekend of league matches. KKR will make the playoffs if they beat Sunrisers, simple. But the likelihood of qualification gets increasingly complicated if they can’t.KKR have picked up their momentum in the second half of the season to the point that they’ve won four of their last six matches. Their desperation has also been evident in this period, such as when captain Dinesh Karthik yelled vehemently at Kuldeep Yadav after a misfield in the previous game or when Chris Lynn tenaciously suggested he “didn’t want to leave it to anyone in the end” in their chase against Rajasthan Royals. Now, the final hurdle awaits. For Sunrisers, their diligence and preparedness early in the season was a pointer of just how to start the IPL. They won nine of their first 11 games, affording them room for error, workload management and experimentation towards the end of the season. However, Sunrisers have also lost their previous two games. So, they’ll want their momentum back in the final league game. They’ll have less than 48 hours to do so, following a night game in Bengaluru on Thursday.Previous meetingA typically-clinical bowling performance from Sunrisers, led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Billy Stanlake, restricted KKR to 138 for 8 in the reverse fixture, at the Eden Gardens. Kane Williamson anchored the chase with a 44-ball 50 to lead Sunrisers’ cruise, winning with an over to spare.BCCILikely XIsSunrisers Hyderabad: 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Alex Hales, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Manish Pandey, 5 Deepak Hooda, 6 Shakib Al Hasan, 7 Shreevats Goswami (wk), 8 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9 Rashid Khan, 10 Sandeep Sharma, 11 Siddarth KaulKolkata Knight Riders: 1 Chris Lynn, 2 Sunil Narine, 3 Robin Uthappa, 4 Nitish Rana, 5 Dinesh Karthik (capt & wk), 6 Andre Russell, 7 Shubman Gill, 8 Piyush Chawla, 9 Mitchell Johnson/Javon Searles, 10 Kuldeep Yadav, 11 Shivam MaviStrategy puntRashid Khan, Sunrisers’ best bowler this season, has struggled against left-handers. He has an economy rate of 10.1 and concedes a boundary every four balls against them. Against right-handers, those numbers improve drastically: an economy rate of 6.1 and a boundary conceded every 8.7 balls. Therefore, there may be a case of leaving Nitish Rana as a floating option, to come in when Rashid comes on if possible. Albeit left field, could there be a case of promoting Piyush Chawla as a second pinch-hitter in that scenario?Stats that matter Williamson has an outstanding strike rate of 150.3 in the middle overs (overs 7 to 15) this season. His death-overs strike rate, by comparison, is just 132.6. In the IPL and T20Is since 2015, the average winning score batting first at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium is 139 for 8. Karthik has an average of 81.5 in chases this season. He has scored 245 runs batting second, with a highest score of 45 not out. Fantasy pickShakib Al Hasan is a valuable T20 player, and arguably an even more valuable fantasy selection. His utility increases at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium because of the sluggish nature of the pitch, which means both his bowling and batting add value.
