Gunathilaka shows why Sri Lanka stuck by him

The opener has had a troubled past but took his chance back in the ODI side

Danyal Rasool in Karachi03-Oct-2019Less than 15 months ago, Danushka Gunathilaka found himself banned from all forms of cricket, further action pending following the results of a Sri Lankan police inquiry. He had been suspended for breaching curfew during the middle of a Test, but far more gravely, the offence was linked to an incident of alleged sexual assault by an individual known to the batsman. While he was cleared of any criminal wrongdoing, the incident saw him earn a harsh reprimand from his then-captain Angelo Mathews, who declared no indiscipline would be tolerated. It was only the latest disciplinary scrape Gunathilaka got into, and he was banned for half a dozen games. It wasn’t yet clear how much longer he would stay out of contention for the national team; occurrences like these can have career-altering implications. He was, to put it mildly, emphatically not in control. Those were matters off the field, and to get a sense of why Sri Lanka Cricket has arguably treated him with kid gloves for so long, you really need to watch him on it. Back into the team for a tour that saw his entry eased by the withdrawal of several first-choice players, Gunathilaka put on a show that emphasised control above all else.Dealing with the triple-left arm threat of Pakistan’s pacemen, he wouldn’t let himself be intimidated; he was never more ruthless than in dealing with the short ball. His control percentage for short deliveries bounced at him from Mohammad Amir, Usman Shinwari and Wahab Riaz was a spotless 100%. He began with a flick to fine leg off the first ball from Shinwari, a second boundary would be had courtesy a back-foot punch through the covers. Amir bowled just one short ball to him all innings, only to see the batsman swivel across and help it behind fine leg. He wouldn’t try that length to Gunathilaka all innings again. The other quicks found the short stuff just as ineffective against him. Nine balls around that length produced 13 runs with two boundaries, with the spinners finding it just as hard to work him out. Pakistan’s two lead spinners, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz, conceded a combined 44 runs in 39 balls against him. He was in control for all but three of those balls – 92.3%. Across the 134 balls he faced for his 133, his control percentage registered at 88.7.”I think it was a good century for me, and I take a lot of positives from that knock,” Gunathilaka said. “I’m sure this’ll help me in the future. It comes right after my injury, which has kept me from playing any international game for the past five months. This was a good opportunity for me and I think I did really well. I was happy I was able to showcase my skills, and hopefully I can do this consistently now.”However, it isn’t numbers that have seen Gunathilaka work his way back into the team after breaking curfew in the middle of a Test match and risking opening himself up to a police inquiry. It isn’t his control percentage that won him back a place on the team after turning up to training without his gear.It was the manner in which he began that presumably has had SLC continue to invest in him. He asserted his authority on the game with those two boundaries in the first over, and finding four further exquisite ones before the field would spread out. Not that that mattered, though, as a reverse sweep in the 15th over indicated the boundaries would keep coming despite Pakistan’s best-laid plans. There was no telling where they’d go – his wagon wheel would reveal no cranny of the ground had gone unexplored – and the elegance of the shot-making would be the only predictable point of a relentless onslaught. When Nawaz dropped it short, Gunathilaka rocked back and slashed a beautifully timed square cut to the boundary. When he went full, he saw him charge and dispatch him back over his head. Even the slog was so brimful of easy power it looked sexy. When Wahab – who had the sort of day confirmation bias tends to set aside while he’s out of the team – went full and fast, Gunathilaka would clear his front leg, and, moments later, wide long-on with devastating efficiency. Wahab would try again. This time he went wider while keeping the same full length, as if Gunathilaka hadn’t spent all afternoon gloriously driving through the covers right in front of the Majid Khan enclosure. Parallels don’t come much sweeter than that. The flamboyance was shelved as he approached the hundred, a pragmatic single to the on side bringing up just his second ODI century, another indicator of unfulfilled potential. This tour, after all, has been all about getting the job done, and for a change, the tables had been turned. Repeatedly spurned by Sri Lanka for one reason or another, this was a tour the board needed its players to sign up to, and Gunathilaka, having played no international cricket since January, saw yet another opportunity to return. There’s little point claiming this must be a turning point – how can one possibly know? – and if history is any indicator, the road to redemption is rarely without its bumps. But on a day when Pakistan recalled two of their own problem children back into their T20I side, here was a reminder of why these men are able to walk back into their jobs after slip-ups that would see them sent packing in just about any other profession. Karachi cricket fans don’t have a reputation for applauding elegance as much as effectiveness, but for a few hours, he had them marvelling the art as much as the craft. It was almost midnight when he left the post-match press conference. This was a curfew Sri Lanka were quite happy letting him breach.

Joe Root hails 'really good' appointment of new England coach Chris Silverwood

England’s Test captain Joe Root has said he thinks Chris Silverwood’s appointment as Trevor Bayliss’ successor is “a really good” one.Since succeeding Alastair Cook at the start of 2017, Root has had to put up with Test cricket being secondary to the white-ball game, with England’s main focus on the Champions Trophy and then the World Cup, but ECB managing director Ashley Giles has signalled that the focus will shift back towards the red-ball game in the coming years.ALSO READ: England to prioritise Test cricket after World Cup focus – Giles“I’m delighted for [Silverwood],” Root told BBC West Yorkshire. “He’s done some excellent work since he’s been involved in the team.”I’m sure you’ve heard all the reports on him: [he’s] very thorough, very well-organised, he knows exactly how he wants to take the team forward. He’s got a very good relationship with the guys, and I think that carries a lot of weight and goes a long way.”He’s very knowledgeable, not just about his bowlers and how to take 20 wickets, but about cricket in general. He’s got a very good record in the County Championship with Essex, in the two years he was there. I think it’s a really good appointment.”In his first outing in front of the media yesterday, Silverwood said that he was keen to make sure him and Root were singing from the same hymn-sheet as to how they wanted the Test team to go about things.ALSO READ: Silverwood’s ‘wow’ factor before understated debut“Joe and I had a good long conversation yesterday,” he said. “I want to make sure that from the get-go, Joe and I are aligned with how we’re going to go about taking the Test team forward.”What I’m talking to you about now [are] Joe’s thoughts as well – the two of us are aligned, and have an idea of how we want to take things forward.”We think about [batting for] long periods of time, and then we want to create a bowling attack that is absolutely relentless. We saw some examples of that this summer – the Aussies made our lives really difficult.”Root also backed Jonny Bairstow, who has been dropped for the two Tests against New Zealand, to return to the side after working on his game while out of the squad.”He’s very disappointed,” Root said. “We’ve had long conversations about it, and he understands that his performances over the last 18 months or so have slipped… and because of it he’s ended up being left out.”But one thing I expect of Jonny is a response, to go away, work at certain areas of his Test game and use the opportunity with that extra bit of time off. When you’re playing all three formats like Jonny has for the past three or four years, you don’t get windows of opportunity to work at specific parts of your game – you’re always preparing for the next series or for the games in between.”He’s got an opportunity now to go away, take that chance, and when he gets his opportunity to play again, to come and do what he does best, prove everyone wrong and cement his spot in the side. That’s the character he is.”

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Fingers of blame have been pointed in the direction of Berhalter and his coaching team on the back of a group stage exit from a major international tournament on home soil. The positivity generated by an opening win over Bolivia was quickly countered by defeats to Panama and Uruguay.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The USMNT have plenty of excuses – including a reckless red card for Tim Weah and some questionable refereeing performances – but the truth is that they did not do enough across three games to reach the knockout stages, with unwanted history being made in the process.

    WHAT REYNA SAID

Some are suggesting that Berhalter now faces a fight to keep his job, but Reyna believes underperforming players should shoulder responsibility for a collective fluffing of lines. He told reporters on the back of a 1-0 loss to Uruguay: “I don't think this tournament really had anything to do with the staff or the tactics or the way we play. I think it was more individual mistakes. The staff can only do so much…. at the end of the day, the players didn't do enough to go through.”

Greenwood is certain to leave Old Trafford this summer with Ligue 1 side Marseille considered favourites to land him. The Red Devils are expected to sanction an initial loan move for the midfielder with an obligation to buy for a fee in the region of €25 million (£21m/$27m) before bonuses next season.

Now the latest report by Gianluca Di Marzio suggests that the 22-year-old may reunite with former United team-mate Sanchez in France as the Chilean could return to Marseille. The former Arsenal and Barcelona star is currently a free agent and could re-sign for his former team whom he left for Inter last summer.

DID YOU KNOW?

Greenwood had a fallout with Sanchez five years back when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge of the club. In August 2019, Sanchez had just returned from Copa America and was recovering from an injury. During a training session in Carrington, the then 30-year-old was fouled by a 17-year-old Greenwood which reportedly led to a bust-up between the two players.

The winger could face hostility from a section of Marseille fans who have already launched a campaign against his signing. However, newly appointed manager Roberto De Zerbi has vowed to protect the player if he moves to the club.

Arsenal should axe forgotten man who’s earning more than Smith Rowe

Arsenal are enjoying a tremendous run of form in the Premier League, and while they might not win the title, they look set to compete for years to come.

Mikel Arteta and Edu have built a brilliant team from the rubble of Unai Emery's disappointing side over the last few years, and while good transfers have played a vital role in that rebuild, so has youth development.

Bukayo Saka, arguably the most valuable player at the club, came through Hale End, and before William Saliba, Martin Odegaard, and Declan Rice were starting alongside him, it was Emile Smith Rowe.

Arsenal'sEddieNketiahcelebrates scoring their third goal with EmileSmithRowe

The young Englishman was undeniably Saka's dynamic partner, so much so that the pair had a song together, and while injury has curtailed his development, he could still be set for a bright future in N5, although quite remarkably, for as much potential as he has, there is a rarely used player who currently earns more than him in the squad.

Emile Smith Rowe's Impact at Arsenal

Smith Rowe debuted for Arsenal towards the end of a UEFA Europa League game against Vorskla Poltava in September 2018. However, he would only make 12 appearances across the 2018/19 and 2019/20 campaigns, with his real breakout coming in the latter half of Arteta's first full season at the club, 2020/21.

Across all competitions, the Croydon-born gem made 33 appearances, scored four goals, provided seven assists and won the Arsenal's Fans' Footballer of the Year for 2021.

The following season saw him improve his goalscoring record as he grabbed 11 goals of his own and provided two assists in just 37 appearances, with Arteta describing him as "a key player" for the Gunners.

Everything looked like it was going to plan for the "prolific" attacker, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, but a slew of injuries, setbacks and niggles over the last two seasons have seen him play just 552 minutes of football across 30 games for the Gunners since the start of last season.

It has been a difficult setback for a player who looked destined to play a role akin to Saka's in this new-look Arsenal team just a couple of seasons ago, but with Arteta starting to give him more opportunities again this season, the "outstanding" Hale End gem, as described by Paul Robinson, could well fight his way back into the starting XI.

However, the club might want to offer him a new deal in the meantime, as his current wage of £40k-per-week, even taking into account his injury troubles, is well below where you might expect it to be, at least in comparison to the wage of another player who has no future in the first XI.

How much money Mohamed Elneny has cost Arsenal

So, the first thing to note is that Mohamed Elneny is quite a popular figure among fans due to his evident love of the club, and while that's admirable, his lack of importance to the team makes his contract situation quite bizarre.

The Egyptian international was signed from FC Basel in January 2016 for a fee of around £5m and has made just 161 appearances for the club and played about 9520 minutes worth of competitive football.

In his first four seasons at the club, he earned £30k-per-week, before spending the 2019/20 season on loan at Turkish Süper Lig side Besiktas, who subsequently paid his wages for that season.

Upon his return to Arsenal, he began earning £50k-per-week until signing an extension in February 2023 that saw his wage increase once again to around £55k-per-week for half of last season and this season, which means that thus far, the 31-year-old has earned around £15.8m in wages from Arsenal, with more to come over the rest of the campaign.

Combine that with the £5m transfer fee, and that means that the north Londoners have spent a grand total of £20.8m on Elneny, which equates to about £2184 per minute, or £129k-per-game.

Now, the 98-capped international has not been bad for the Gunners, not at all. Still, his lack of game time across his eight years at the club serves as evidence that he isn't massively important either, and it seems odd that he would be earning £15k-per-week more than Smith Rowe, who could well still become an integral part of Arsenal's future.

Ultimately, with the Egyptian's contract expiring in the summer, the club will have to decide whether it's finally time to move on, and given the club's current trajectory, it probably is.

"Disgrace of a footballer" – West Ham media slam Ward-Prowse vs Burnley

Fresh from a frustrating mid-week defeat at the hands of SC Freiburg in the Europa League last 16 first leg, West Ham United hosted a Burnley side on course for Premier League relegation at the first time of asking after a woeful season back in the top-flight.

On paper, the Hammers seemed to have a routine task in front of them, but that did not prove to be the case as Vincent Kompany's side almost shocked the London Stadium in a 2-2 draw. The Clarets went in front courtesy of a stunning strike from David Fofana and an own goal from Konstantinos Mavropanos, before a Lucas Paqueta goal and a Danny Ings' late equaliser. Burnley now sit 11 points adrift of safety, whilst David Moyes' side sit seventh.

James Ward-Prowse slammed for Burnley display

One man who failed to impress against Burnley was summer signing James Ward-Prowse.

West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

The midfielder initially started well in a West Ham shirt after joining from Southampton, but showed the effects of a long season so far up against the Clarets. Well-known news page, West Ham News, aired their frustrations over the performance, posting on X:

The former Southampton captain was taken off at half-time following a performance to forget at the London Stadium. But even without the midfielder, the Hammers failed to secure all three points, despite goals from Paqueta and Ings.

Ward-Prowse failed to win a single ground duel

It's no shock that Ward-Prowse was criticised so heavily after such a disappointing display, given his stats against Burnley. At the heart of midfield, West Ham needed to win the battle against Burnley, but the substituted Englishman simply failed to do so in the first-half.

On an off day, perhaps the criticism was perhaps harsh on Ward-Prowse, but he must not make it a habit at the London Stadium. Up next, he'll have the perfect chance to make amends with Freiburg and the opportunity to turn things around in the Europa League on offer in mid-week.

Of course, whether he gets that chance remains to be seen, but after coming off at the break, he'll be the one with the fresh legs in the middle of the park for the Hammers.

Threatened species shows off its worth on T20 Finals Day

It is a curious truth that whenever one of cricket’s prized formats has been challenged in recent years it has often responded in a manner illustrating its value

It is a curious truth that whenever one of cricket’s prized formats has been challenged in recent years it has often responded in a manner illustrating its value. In 2016 the decision was taken to reduce the number of County Championship matches to 14; then came Middlesex v Yorkshire at Lord’s, the best climax to an English season for many years and a game so fine it even inspired an excellent book: Duncan Hamilton’s .This year a prevailing enthusiasm among some propeller heads was a reduction in the length of Test matches to four days; so we had the most closely contested Ashes series for a decade, one in which three of the five matches had the temerity to extend themselves into a fifth day.Next year, of course, The Hundred is to be played in the weeks hitherto reserved for the Vitality Blast. Having marketed T20 cricket superbly and seen it attract record attendances at almost all venues, the counties must now try to sell a second short-form competition much earlier in the summer at a time when many GCSE and A Level examinations are taking place. Good luck. The response of the Blast was to offer a glorious Finals Day at Edgbaston, where two of the three matches went to the last ball and one of those games, the Worcestershire Rapids v Notts Outlaws semi-final, gave us one of the most bizarre finishes in the history of T20 cricket.Old coaches and players are wont to suggest this is another example of the power of “Mother Cricket”, a strange force by which the game rewards those who respect it and punishes those who do not. More rational individuals view this contention as so much hokum yet even they would agree that in the summer prior to the greatest change in the English domestic game for a generation we have had a season so fine that no one outside the ECB sees any need for fundamental alteration. The Vitality Blast has played its part in all this. T20 Finals Day is utterly unlike any other occasion in the sporting year. It is back-slapping, brightly-coloured, belching, beery England in all its unapologetic finery. Decorum? Don’t even think about it. Subtlety? Not unless you are referring to Pat Brown’s knuckle balls or Ravi Bopara’s judgement of an innings. Some people will never warm to T20 cricket yet even they admit the importance of the income the competition generates and concede that it has refined and extended many skills. How many misfields do you recall from this year’s Finals Day? How many dropped catches? And it is even more important to recognise The Blast’s value because it appears under challenge; because, so the argument goes, if the ECB can use The Hundred to kill The Blast it will foreshadow the introduction of a hierarchy of ten or so first-class teams with the smaller counties permanently relegated or forced out of business altogether: counties like Essex, who won The Blast and may well win the County Championship, the greatest prize of all; counties like Somerset, who won the Royal London One-Day Cup; counties like Northamptonshire and Gloucestershire, who are on the verge of promotion to Division One; counties like Derbyshire, who so relished their first Finals Day; counties like Leicestershire, who continue to nurture great talents like Hasan Azad and Harry Swindells.Great God, this is poisonous stuff. And a simple press release from the ECB would be a most powerful antidote to it all.For the moment, though, we still have Finals Day and even the sceptics should treasure it a little. Sir John Betjeman would have loved the whole ridiculous rigmarole. Even though he knew next to nothing about cricket, that fine poet always appreciated English people displaying all their daft exuberance; the lines of people in fancy dress doing some version of the conga would, I suspect, have brought forth howls of laughter from him. Though capable of serious poetry, he relished popular entertainment – in its golden years was a great favourite – and Edgbaston on the third Saturday in September is a right royal knees-up.A fan dressed as the Queen during the Vitality T20 Blast Semi Final match between Notts Outlaws and Worcestershire Rapids•Getty Images

And of course it bloody daft. From the first chorus of the morning to the final spray of champagne it is gloriously unhinged. You cannot stage an obstacle race between 18 adult humans, most of them dressed in felt animal costumes, and hope that it will look anything but absolutely bonkers. You cannot celebrate the fall of every wicket by sending people hurtling into the air in a glass pod – it is called the Bungee Blast – and think you are presenting an image of maturity. You cannot hire Mr Motivator – ask your parents – to exhort 6,000 people in the Hollies Stand to exercise when most of the people he is encouraging have been drinking for England and many are dressed as bananas / Donald Trump / chickens / Roman Catholic priests, and still hope to look sensible. Someone might have suggested to the ECB that it is tricky to exercise when you cannot stand upright. But never mind, welcome to Birmingham’s House of Fun.It is also about the beauty of seeing a great city in its crepuscular light; the beauty of seeing Birmingham’s great business houses disappear into the darkness until they are revealed only by tiny pinpricks of red. The English season should always end with the last day of the County Championship but there is a certain elegiac richness about this particular Saturday evening. Gone is the expectation of early morning. All we have before us is the season’s final game of short-form cricket. And so we are left with the cricketers. They must always have the final word. We are left with Worcestershire’s Daryl Mitchell going over to his team-mate, Wayne Parnell, when he has been hit for four off the penultimate ball of the Final. We are left with Simon Harmer returning to console Parnell when his blows off that bowler have secured the trophy for Essex. And we are left with Harmer telling the press that his team will celebrate their victory properly but will not “go nuclear”. Many of the 24,550 folk at Edgbaston, on the other hand, have been going nuclear all day. The first beach-ball was confiscated at 11.24am. Edu in pole position to sign £50m forward for Arsenal as club eye successor

Arsenal have entered pole position to sign a "pacey" and "skilful" striker who could cost as little as £50 million this summer.

Edu and Arteta seek new striker signing

Since last summer, the north London club have been repeatedly linked with new centre-forward options as manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu seek to add more firepower.

Arsenal clear they will bid for £80m star who Rice called "mind-boggling"

Napoli star Victor Osimhen has been among Arsenal's striker targets, according to reports, while Brentford star Ivan Toney is a big name who continues to be mentioned in tandem with the title chasers.

Arteta boasts just Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah as his number nine options right now, with the club arguably lacking a proven 20-plus goal-per-season striker to really give them an extra bit of cutting edge in the penalty area.

Club legends like Ray Parlour have been adamant that Arsenal should sign a striker, especially if they wish to keep pace with England's most elite sides, like Man City and Liverpool.

"I do think Arsenal need to strengthen up front as we had four top strikers in my day with Bergkamp, Henry, Wiltord, Kanu and also Jeffers would pop up with a few goals," Parlour exclusively told FFC during the January transfer window.

"Arsenal have two main recognised strikers in Jesus and Nketiah. It’s very tough in January to get the striker you want, so I trust Edu and Mikel to get it right and maybe a loan could happen."

While Arsenal opted against strengthening Arteta's ranks in the winter, which could be down to them spending over £200 million last summer, this upcoming window will hand Edu and co another opportunity to finally land a new centre-forward.

Toney in particular will continue to be mentioned in the weeks leading up to summer, as he is fully expected to leave Brentford.

Arsenal in pole position to sign Toney

Sharing an update on their links to the 27-year-old, journalist Wayne Veysey, writing for Football Insider, says Arsenal are in pole position to sign Toney as the Bees already look for his replacement.

Other reports suggest he could cost as little as £50 million given the Englishman's contract situation, with his deal set to expire in 2025. There will still be fierce competition for Toney's signature, but it appears the Gunners are a favourite destination as things stand.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

Scoring three goals in his last four games since returning from a lengthy on-field ban, there is little denying Toney is a proven English top flight striker, and he's also been revered for his pace.

"He’s scored goals wherever he’s been and the past few years he’s been a handful in every game in any league. I’m a big fan of his and I think he’ll do really well," Hermann Hreidarsson told talkSPORT.

"It’s down to him [how far he goes]. He’s got a bit of everything. He’s powerful, he’s pacey and skilful. Year-by-year your football IQ goes up. He’s a world-class player and it’s down to him. He can go wherever he wants."
