'Bowlers win you crunch games in T20 or The Hundred' – Kumar Sangakkara

MCC president would face choice between Mitchell Starc and Lasith Malinga in new competition’s draft

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Oct-2019Kumar Sangakkara says that a balanced bowling attack is the key to winning crunch games in short-form cricket, and that he would select a bowler if he was given first pick in the inaugural draft for The Hundred this Sunday.239 overseas players have registered for the draft and will be competing for only 24 spots, while six players have put themselves forward at the maximum reserve price of £125,000.Those six names include three batsmen – Chris Gayle, Steven Smith and David Warner – and three bowlers in Lasith Malinga, Kagiso Rabada and Mitchell Starc.ALSO READ: Full player list revealed for The Hundred draft”In T20 cricket, or now The Hundred, a balanced, exceptional bowling attack is always what’s going to win you crunch games and finals,” Sangakkara said. “You can have the best batting in the world, but it needs to be supported by the best bowling.”And Sangakkara highlighted the two men that he thought stood out among the overseas players in the top salary bracket. “I would always go for a bowler – someone with the experience and the quality of Lasith Malinga or Mitchell Starc,” he said. But it was the Sri Lankan strike bowler, who will resume his role as T20 captain in his country’s three-match series in Australia later this month, that Sangakkara said would be his first choice.Lasith Malinga is still a force to be reckoned with in short-form cricket at 36•AFP”I would still go for Lasith Malinga, I think,” he said. “Malinga has really shown, even in the recent past, how skilled he is. He tore through New Zealand in that final T20 game – he took four [wickets] in four balls again, which was an incredible feat, so I wouldn’t look past Malinga.”Malinga has an exceptional record in T20 cricket in England for Sri Lanka, taking 19 wickets in his 11 games in the country. His economy rate in those matches is just 6.66 runs per over, and he was superb in the 2009 World T20, taking 12 wickets in seven appearances including 3-17 against Pakistan at Lord’s.But in a mock draft conducted by eight media teams at Lord’s on Wednesday, Malinga was one of the high-profile overseas stars who was not picked up, with assorted journalists picking Rashid Khan, Kagiso Rabada and Sunil Narine as their main bowling options instead. The draft takes place on Sunday, October 20.Kumar Sangakkara was speaking at the Sri Lanka High Commission in London as part of a drive to rebuild tourism from the UK to Sri Lanka

Wrexham have also welcomed Lewis Brunt and George Dobson into their ranks, with players that boast top-flight and vital EFL experience being enticed to SToK Racecourse. There is the promise of more business to come as the Red Dragons piece together a squad that will be fiercely competitive in League One.

GettyWHAT PARKINSON SAID

Parkinson has told of looking to get more players through the door: “We are still looking to improve in areas. Slowly but surely we will hopefully make those signings and come the start of the season, have a squad which is strong and competitive. Hopefully we will sign a few more players and – equally – work with the ones we have got. We have got some really good players and a good core of a squad already. There's players in the squad who have played at this level and above before, and there's some who will be new to League One. We will work with everybody and try and get a team that we can continue the success that we've had so far.”

Contact made: Man Utd eyeing move for "special" manager to replace Ten Hag

Manchester United have already made contact with a “special” manager to possibly replace Erik ten Hag this summer, according to an update from one journalist.

Erik ten Hag’s Man Utd future

The Red Devils recorded a much-needed FA Cup victory over Nottingham Forest on Wednesday evening to set up a mouth-watering quarterfinal clash at Old Trafford against rivals Liverpool. The competition is United’s last chance of silverware in what has been a disappointing second season under Ten Hag, who has lost 15 games in 2023/24.

Finishing in the top four of the Premier League is still possible, however, it took a blow on the weekend following a late defeat to Fulham, which has resulted in plenty of speculation over Ten Hag’s future.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is already making wholesale changes off the pitch at Old Trafford and there have been rumours of a managerial switch in the coming months, with the new investor "not completely sold" on Ten Hag, according to The Manchester Evening News.

Zinedine Zidane and Julian Nagelsmann are thought to be options alongside Brighton & Hove Albion’s Roberto de Zerbi and Bayern Munich’s Thomas Tuchel, however, another name is now emerging.

Man Utd have already contacted Antonio Conte

According to journalist Rudy Galetti on Wednesday, Man United appear to have a three-man shortlist to possibly replace Ten Hag at the end of the season. Tuchel and De Zerbi are mentioned alongside former Tottenham manager Antonio Conte, with contact already made in recent months.

Conte has been out of work for almost 12 months now after leaving Spurs. The Italian, who plays a 3-4-3 system, was hailed by a number of Tottenham players during his time in north London, with midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg saying:

antonio-conte-transfer-gossip-tottenham-hotspur-romelu-lukaku-inter-milan-postecoglou

“Antonio is a special coach, with a special way of doing things, with a very high level of performing. There is always a time of adaptation, a time of understanding the sports side and also the personal side, and everything is coming together well.”

Meanwhile, defender Eric Dier said: “It’s special. When he talks to you, you can tell straight away his passion for football and intensity. The way he feels, you can’t help but feed off it, it’s energising. Every time he speaks, there’s such intent in it.”

This isn’t the first time Conte has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, though, with the manager an option for the Red Devils before appointing Ralf Rangnick back in 2021. Gary Neville didn’t think Conte was the right fit for United back then, so it would be interesting to see his view on a possible move now, should Ten Hag depart.

Gio Reyna's time is up: Borussia Dortmund reportedly make transfer decision on USMNT star after disappointing Premier League loan at Nottingham Forest

Borussia Dortmund have reportedly decided to permanently part ways with USMNT star Gio Reyna this summer.

  • Reyna also unsure of Dortmund stay

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Over the last couple of years, Reyna's stock at Borussia Dortmund has plummeted and the USMNT star's failed loan spell at Premier League side Nottingham Forest in the second half of the 2023-24 season has not helped at all. As per Bild, Dortmund have now made the decision to sell the 21-year-old this summer.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Reyna made a loan move to Nottingham in January after not having had a lot of proper playing time at the Bundesliga side under Edin Terzic. However, the 21-year-old's fortunes did not improve with the Premier League side as he hardly featured for the relegation-battlers. Over the half-season, Reyna only saw action in 10 games for Nuno Espirito Santo's side, including two starts, for a total of just 230 minutes.

    WHAT REYNA SAID

Speaking to the media earlier this month, when Reyna was asked about his future, he said: "As of right now, I'm very focused here."

However, Reyna was less sure when addressing the issue in Dallas ahead of the USMNT's Copa America opener against Bolivia.

"Obviously, just looking forward to next season, I just want to go somewhere where I'm valued and get to play a lot and have an important role on the team. Whether it's at Dortmund or somewhere else, I just want to find the best solution for myself," he said.

"I haven't really looked into it and of course, my team is working slowly behind the scenes. It's still early but all my focus right now is on Sunday and obviously the tournament coming up."

'You can still bat there' – Vernon Philander hopes South Africa pull off the draw

Whatever happens on the final day of the Vizag Test, there is one thing South Africa will not be complaining about. The pitch.

Watch cricket on ESPN+

India v South Africa is available in the US on Hotstar and ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the three Tests.

After the raging turners of 2015, which saw only one of the three non-rain affected Tests go into a fourth day, the visitors have been pleasantly surprised with the surface so far and as a result, are hopeful they can add to their history of hard-fought draws.”The last time we came here, the wickets were a lot worse,” Vernon Philander said at the press conference. “But you can still bat on there. Their batters showed it today. Guys have to get in. Hopefully two guys can get in and can get big hundreds for us.”While there is ample evidence of uneven bounce and further deterioration, which will bring India’s spinners into play, Philander’s optimism is not entirely deluded (or it may be PR nonsense). South Africa, and in particular their captain Faf du Plessis, thrive in this kind of scrap. They batted out 148 overs to draw the 2012 Test in Adelaide, 136 overs to share spoils with India at the Wanderers in 2013 and 111 to deny Sri Lanka victory in Colombo in 2014. At Vizag, they ‘only’ need to last 98 overs.Recently retired Hashim Amla, who is now an analyst for the broadcaster , said he had “strong belief” that South Africa could hold out, provided they approach it in the right way. Amla’s broad-brush advice was to have the common goal of surviving 98 overs but to leave it up to individual batsmen to decide how they would go about it.ALSO READ: Dean Elgar to Keshav Maharaj, 10 seriously underrated cricketersWhen asked what he would do personally, Amla said, “I would try and block every ball dead.” He did just that five years ago at the SSC, absorbing 171 balls for 25 runs to ensure a 1-0 series victory. Amla said strike rotation did not even come into consideration because all he sought to do was “minimise the risk of getting out”. He added that even someone like AB de Villiers, who has “every shot in the book,” went into a super-defensive bubble when trying to play for the draw but also acknowledged that not all players would be able to maintain such stoicism.Though Dean Elgar has been dismissed, Amla used the opener as an example for how South Africa’s batsmen should approach the final day’s play tomorrow. “He might hit one or two over the top, to get a man sent back and then there are not so many fielders in his space,” Amla said, indicating how the score could still tick over even when accumulating runs was not the primary objective.Quinton de Kock is a player who may look to be more aggressive than Amla may like but that could work to his, and South Africa’s advantage. So too, could the team composition. South Africa bat competently all the way to No.11, where Kagiso Rabada has proven he is no bunny. That, however, may be the only benefit of leaving wicket-takers like Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje on the bench and South Africa will still have to address whether they went into this Test with their best XI, considering how Dane Piedt and Senuran Muthusamy have struggled to make an impact.Philander defended his team-mates, saying South Africa were simply outplayed by quality batsmen. “The seamers have only taken four wickets for both teams. You can say it this way or that way but I think three spinners was the right call to have made. They have played our spinners really well and credit to them.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Arteta is Spanish and was polished in Barcelona's famed La Masia academy as a teenager, also racking up junior international caps for Spain at various different age groups. But he has a vested interest in his Arsenal players who are representing other countries too. As well as Rice, Bukayo Saka and Aaron Ramsdale are in England's squad this summer.

  • WHAT DECLAN RICE SAID

"I've spoken to Mikel, he's been great," Rice explained. "We had a phone call the other, we were speaking for about 10 minutes. That was good, it was nice to speak to him – I hadn't spoken to him since the end of the season, so that was really nice. Then, he texted me the other night saying 'Vamos!', when we got to the final. I'm sure he's going to be split, obviously because he's Spanish, but he's got boys in the [Arsenal] squad who are English as well. It's a tough one for him but he did wish me all the best, so I was happy with that."

Aside from managing England players at Arsenal, Arteta himself has lived in the country consistently for almost 20 years, having first joined Everton in January 2005. He then went straight from hanging up his boots with Arsenal in 2016 to coaching at Manchester City, returning to north London three years later. Arteta also had two years at Rangers in his early playing career, which means he's actually spent half his life in the UK.

Pakistan seek better support for Babar Azam to counter red-hot Australia

The hosts will not be able to overtake Pakistan to be the No. 1 T20I team even with a win in Perth, but the series is still on the line

The Preview by Daniel Brettig07-Nov-2019

Ashton Agar picked up two wickets and went at under a run-a-ball•Getty Images

Big PictureRain in Sydney not only robbed Australia of the chance to complete a T20 series victory over Pakistan in the space of two matches, it also meant that the hosts will not be able to overtake Babar Azam’s team as the world’s No. 1 ranked T20I team with a win in the final match in Perth – the tourists will cling on by a single point even in defeat. But there remains plenty to play for, not least the series itself, and also the continuing road towards a now imminent Test series between the two teams, beginning in Brisbane in a couple of weeks’ time. Pakistan still appear very much in acclimatising mode, having run into an Australian side committing serious mental and physical energy to T20 international matches for the first time since the 2016 global event – next year’s on home soil being the first of two in as many years. While Australia will have to rebalance their bowling attack somewhat, in the absence of Pat Cummins as he freshens up ahead of the Tests, there has been a strong sense of cohesion about the hosts’ approach, either attacking from the top through Aaron Finch and David Warner or letting Steven Smith direct traffic for the middle order in the event of an early wicket or two. With the ball and in the field, the Australians have not quite been as stingy as the Perth Scorchers at their best, but they are tracking that way both in terms of tight bowling combinations and predatory work to cut off runs and seek run-outs.Pakistan offered some signs of hope at Manuka Oval, not least the aggression of Iftikhar Ahmed as some long-awaited help for Babar, but also a little more cutting edge to their bowling line-up. The additional bounce on offer at Perth Stadium, where Australia’s ODI team was well beaten by South Africa at the start of last summer, has the potential to bring the visitors still further into the game, should they get their lengths right.Form guideAustralia WWWWW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Pakistan LLLLLIn the spotlightNever conceding more than 27 runs in a spell while also scooping six wickets, Ashton Agar has been a considerable success story for Australia over this bracket of T20 matches. He has, with help from Adam Zampa, ensured that the hosts have a three-dimensional nature to their bowling attack that has not always been evident in the game’s shortest format. Pakistan, like the world’s other nations, will need to find a better way to combat his changes of pace and variations in spin before next year’s global event on similar surfaces.Babar Azam watches one race away•Getty Images

Scores of 59 not out and 50 have underlined the rare nature of Babar Azam’s talents, but in each case his innings have not amounted to all they might have been for a lack of adequate help. With Iftikhar having announced himself in Canberra, albeit on a less bouncy wicket that can be expected in Perth, there is reason for Babar to hope that others may soon come to the party.Team newsThe decision to rest Cummins for the final match of the series suggests a possible return to the side for Sean Abbott, though Billy Stanlake is also waiting in the wings.Australia (probable): 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch (capt), 3 Steven Smith, 4 Ben McDermott, 5 Ashton Turner, 6 Alex Carey (wk), 7 Ashton Agar, 8 Sean Abbott, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Kane RichardsonA promotion may be possible for Iftikhar following his Canberra fireworks and the need for Babar to have more support towards the top of the order.Pakistan (probable): 1 Babar Azam (capt), 2 Fakhar Zaman, 3 Haris Sohail, 4 Iftikhar Ahmed, 5 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 6 Asif Ali, 7 Imad Wasim, 8 Wahab Riaz 9 Shadab Khan, 10 Mohammad Amir, 11 Mohammad Irfan/Mohammad MusaPitch and conditionsThe Perth Stadium pitch can be expected to be fast and bouncy, with a hot day forecast for Perth – temperatures are expected to be around 33C about the time of the first ball at 4.30pm local time.Stats and trivia David Warner needs 67 runs to become the leading all-time T20I scorer in matches between Australia and Pakistan, surpassing Umar Akmal (335 runs) and Kamran Akmal (366) Australia and Pakistan have never played a T20I against each other in Perth beforeQuotes”In the past we’ve used these opportunities to rest some of those guys but we need to get better at it. It’s something that’s a priority for Australian cricket so therefore you want to play your best players as often as you can. We’re really lucky, we’ve got great depth in the squad. We’ve got a ripping bunch of blokes in this squad and that’s really pleasing.”
