Ratcliffe ready to sell £350,000-a-week Man Utd player who regrets joining

Manchester United are ready to sell a £350,000-a-week player this summer who reportedly regrets joining the club.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s busy Sunday

Sir Jim Ratcliffe had a frantic Sunday, running the London Marathon before heading over to Wembley to watch Man Utd’s FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City.

When he arrived at Wembley for the second half, the Red Devils were in control of the tie before giving up a 3-0 lead to the Championship side. They almost threw it away in extra time but managed to prevail on penalties, with Ratcliffe saying prior to the game that patience is required among the Old Trafford fanbase.

“We're not there with football yet. One of the biggest problems with football is you get these new guys coming into the team, they're capable people but they're all on gardening leave. It's a big problem in football. The fans are impatient. It's a journey, they have to be patient. It's not a light switch. We will turn it around.”

Ratcliffe’s gardening leave comments appear to point towards Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth, who is wanted as sporting director at Old Trafford. Should Ashworth arrive in time for the summer, he may work closely with new technical director Jason Wilcox, who has joined from Southampton. A number of incomings and outgoings could be on the cards ahead of Ratcliffe’s first full season as co-owner, and by the looks of things, they are ready to sell one player.

Man Utd ready to sell Casemiro

According to Football Insider, Man Utd are ready to sell Casemiro this summer. This comes after a poor performance at Wembley where the Brazilian turned out at centre-back alongside Harry Maguire, missing his penalty in the shootout.

Sources have told FI that ‘United now feel Casemiro is unsuited to their side and are ready to consider offers for his services in the summer’, looking to get his huge £350,000-a-week base salary off the books at Old Trafford.

Casemiro hasn’t exactly had the best of times in Manchester lately, with Jamie Redknapp slamming the 32-year-old midfielder after United's draw against Bournemouth earlier this month.

“I love watching him play. But right now he looks like he’s in Soccer Aid. He looks like he’s playing at such a pace where the game is a bit of fun and there’s celebrities coming on the pitch. No. This is the Premier League, you’ve got so much experience. That isn’t the case of anything else apart from running.”

There have also been reports this season that Casemiro ‘regrets’ his decision to leave Real Madrid for Man Utd back in 2022, so parting ways with the midfielder could be best for all involved this summer. The Red Devils also appear to have replacements lined up for the Brazilian, with Fluminense defensive midfielder Andre a reported concrete target, so the coming months could represent a new era both on and off the pitch.

Howe must ditch 6/10 Newcastle man who won 0 duels vs Man Utd

Newcastle United fell to a first Premier League defeat in four matches, losing 3-2 to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Eddie Howe’s side trailed at the break, following Kobbie Mainoo’s strike just after the half-hour mark, separating the sides after a half of few opportunities.

Anthony Gordon scored his 11th league goal of the season before goals from Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund pushed Erik ten Hag’s side into a two-goal advantage.

Left-back Lewis Hall pulled a goal back in stoppage time, but it wasn’t enough with the Magpies now three points behind Chelsea in the battle for a Europa League spot.

It’s no secret that injuries have plagued Howe’s side in recent months, with one of the returning players having an evening to forget in Manchester.

Kieran Trippier’s stats against Manchester United

After not starting since the 2nd of March, Kieran Trippier was recalled to Newcastle’s starting eleven for the trip to face the Red Devils.

However, it would be a decision that backfired, with the 33-year-old producing a below-par performance at Old Trafford.

The right-back could only produce 22 accurate passes, at a completion rate of just 63% and only managed to find a teammate on 50% of his crosses into the 18-yard box.

Trippier also lost possession 17 times and failed to win any of the duels that he contested during the defeat. The former Atletico Madrid defender failed to produce any positive numbers defensively, being dribbled past once and unable to complete any tackles.

When comparing his stats with fellow full-back Hall, it’s clear that the 19-year-old’s display was much more complete than his experienced teammate – even managing to get on the scoresheet for the second time against the Red Devils this season.

Trippier was subsequently awarded a 6/10 rating by Chronicle Live journalist Lee Ryder, with the Newcastle correspondent claiming the defender looked 'off the pace'.

With it being his first start in over two months, it was to be expected he would be slightly off the pace, but with a crunch battle coming up on Sunday, Howe must immediately drop him and replace him with another talent who made his comeback last night.

The man to replace Trippier against Brentford

After missing the Magpies’ last two Premier League outings through injury, centre-back Fabian Schar made his return in the defeat off the substitutes bench, replacing Trippier in the 63rd minute of the clash.

Full-back Emil Krafth has often had to feature at the heart of the defence alongside Dan Burn such as the current injury problems, with Howe needing to play the Swede in his natural position ahead of the trip to the GTEC on Sunday afternoon.

It would allow Schar and Burn to play in a centre-back pairing, with Krafth taking up his usual role on the right-hand side of the Magpies defence.

With Sunday’s game being vital in the club’s hunt for European football, Howe simply must drop Trippier with the defender needing to be replaced by Schar if the Magpies are to have any chance of claiming seventh spot at the very least.

Man Utd can now end Casemiro experiment by starting their teen sensation

This time last season, during Erik ten Hag’s debut campaign, Manchester United had already confirmed their spot in the Champions League.

However, fast forward to today, and the Red Devils welcome Newcastle United to Old Trafford as the two sides battle it out for a spot in the UEFA Conference League.

Erik ten Hag

However, after United’s 4-0 hammering by Crystal Palace and a 1-0 defeat on Sunday against Arsenal, there’s the possibility that Europe isn’t achieved at all this campaign.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at who could come into the lineup to solidify the backline and finally replace Casemiro.

Why Casemiro must not start at centre-back

Due to the injury crisis that has plagued the Man United backline, Ten Hag has been forced into the experimental decision of playing Casemiro at centre-back.

The Brazilian’s first outing in this role was the 3-3 draw versus Coventry City in the FA Cup, and since then, he’s played every game in defence.

Manchester United star Casemiro

However, the defensive midfielder by trade has received plenty of criticism for his performances against Palace and Arsenal, with creator Liam Canning labelling Casemiro as “beyond embarrassing” after the game at Selhurst Park.

During that defeat, the 32-year-old played a role in three of the Eagles’ goals and was dribbled past seven times. On top of that, he was at fault for the Gunners’ goal at the weekend, playing Kai Havertz miles onside, which highlights his lack of understanding of the role.

It’s quite clear that Ten Hag must deploy a true centre half against the Magpies, and luckily, there’s one waiting for a shot to shine.

The player to replace Casemiro

Willy Kambwala has already had his fair share of first-team football this season, much more than he’d have anticipated at the start of the campaign.

The 19-year-old defender has featured eight times in the Premier League for the Red Devils, including three starts, with the latest of those being the 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

At the weekend, Kambwala returned to the pitch after a short spell on the sidelines, coming on as a 75th-minute substitute for Jonny Evans, where he made one tackle and won all of his duels.

However, there were cries for the French ace to start ahead of Casemiro prior to the game, with even United legend Peter Schmeichel saying:

“Casemiro can't play centre-back, he was exposed on Monday night so why don't you put a proper centre-half like Willy Kambwala in there rather than on the bench?”

Although it is simply a matter of fielding one of the only available centre-backs at the moment, Kambwala has certainly proved that he can hold his own when called upon.

His performance against Liverpool highlights that, as he also displayed that he has a vast skillset, including technical ability and confidence, as shown by his touches, pass accuracy, and possession lost.

The 6 foot 3 defender is also extremely physical, and he’s not afraid to get tight to the opposition striker, which increases the overall intensity of Ten Hag’s side.

However, what may prove vital against Newcastle and Alexander Isak in particular is Kambwala’s excellent athleticism and turn of pace, which were on display in a race against Darwin Nunez during the 2-2 draw.

Overall, there’s no benefit to fielding Casemiro in the team over Kambwala, and given that he’s always impressed when playing, the youngster simply has to start today.

The Rapids hope to build on their impressive signing after signing another player with U.S. men's national team experience in Reggie Cannon, according to a report.

Cannon, 26, joins the squad on a free transfer after abruptly leaving QPR on Aug. 30. He is in an ongoing dispute with Boavista where FIFA has order the American to pay the Portuguese side $1.4 million after unlawfully leaving the club due to unpaid wages.

The Rapids seemingly teased the signing on social media Tuesday night. GOAL has reached out to the Rapids for comment. Tom Bogert was first to report Cannon joining Colorado.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The Rapids, who sit fourth in the Western Conference, are tied for the third best attack in MLS with 53 goals. The hope would be that Cannon's arrival will boost the other side of the roster.

Colorado has conceded 45 goals this season, tied for fifth-worst in the Conference. That hasn't been helped by the departure of rising young Canadian star Moise Bombito, who joined OGC Nice over the summer. Cannon, who has 28 international caps, could be a potential upgrade either at right back or potentially serve as depth at the center back position.

Cannon joins five other players on the team who have at least one U.S. cap in Djordje Mihailovic, Sam Vines, Cole Bassett, Zack Steffen and Jonathan Lewis.

DID YOU KNOW?

Cannon kicked off his professional career as a homegrown player for FC Dallas. He made 67 appearances for Dallas before earning a move to Portuguese top flight in 2020.

Cannon made his last USMNT appearance in 2022.

Ashok Malhotra: ICA 'unfortunately' too dependent on BCCI and Apex Council

He is disappointed with Apex Council members Gaekwad and Rangaswamy for not doing their bit

Shamya Dasgupta20-Jul-2020

Ashok Malhotra was the sole nominee for the position of ICA president•Ashok Malhotra

Ashok Malhotra, the president of the Indian Cricketers’ Association (ICA), has expressed his disappointment with Aunshuman Gaekwad and Shanta Rangaswamy, the association members who are also part of the BCCI’s Apex Council, for not addressing the ICA’s demands.Malhotra, who made his displeasure public with a Facebook video a few days back, said that “unfortunately” the body is dependent on the board to get its work done, and it was the “duty of the Apex Council to deliver” on their obligations. The demands from the ICA are (a) pension for former players who have played less than 25 first-class games, (b) pension for widows of former cricketers, (c) increase in medical insurance from Rs 5 lakh ($6674 approx.] to Rs 10 lakh [$13,348 approx.], and (d) release of the money from the benevolent fund to Manoj Prabhakar, whose ban for match-fixing ended in 2005.”We are answerable to our stakeholders in the ICA, and the Apex Council members are answerable to the ICA,” Malhotra told ESPNcricinfo. “Three Apex Council meetings have been conducted, and these issues are not even in the minutes of those meetings. You talk about IPL, you talk about (administration of the) Bihar Cricket Association, domestic calendar, the FTP… I have nothing to do with it; it’s for the BCCI to do something.”I have been told by my Apex Council colleagues that they did speak to the BCCI president, but outside the meeting, not in the meeting. Outside the meeting counts for nothing. Because it’s not in the agenda. It’s almost ten months, and nothing has been done so far.”Lots of cricketers are 70, 80, they are on the last leg (of their lives), how long can they wait? Anyway, the pension that is given to cricketers amounts to .54% of the overall BCCI expenditure for a year. Even if you double it, it’s 1.08%. We are not asking for much. Of the five [ICA members – Hitesh Majmudar, V Krishnaswamy, Yajurvindra Singh and Rajesh Nayyar are the others] at least listen to one, for god’s sake.”Malhotra made his grievance known to the wider world via the video, where he stressed that “unluckily”, the ICA has been dependent on the BCCI and the Apex Council, which hasn’t worked out too well for it. And that – the public expression of his disenchantment – ended up irking the four other members of the ICA, some of whom have since spoken to sections of the media asking for issues to be dealt with internally. In the video, Malhotra had said, “Last meeting of Apex Council was held long way back and because of coronavirus, yes, they are having difficulties – conference calls, Zoom, whatever – but the fact is that BCCI will have to take a call. It is not in the hands of ICA. ICA can only request and plead, and Apex Council is the one which will have to take the decision. Although there are two ICA members who are Apex Council members, they are in Apex Council because of ICA. And it little bit becomes their responsibility.”I know BCCI has a lot of things on their agenda, like Bihar Cricket Association, they are talking about domestic cricket, a whole lot of things. [But], I as ICA president, ICA as a whole, we are not really concerned about it. We are more concerned about what we are asked to do. And that is the duty of Apex Council, to deliver. I am saying again and again because we are getting a lot of questions, we are answerable to the stakeholders. We are really, really answerable. And ICA members, who are Apex Council members, are answerable to ICA. So it is a chain reaction. If nothing happens, they have every reason to be disappointed with the ICA. And ICA in turn might be disappointed with their Apex Council members. It’s a fact.”Shanta Rangaswamy and Aunshuman Gaekwad are the ICA members in the BCCI Apex Council•Getty Images

According to Malhotra, he has received messages from his four colleagues since then, and they have also sent him an email asking him to “follow the process”. Majmudar has also been quoted by the as saying, “We don’t want to take on anybody. We want to work for the benefit of cricketers, but we need to follow the process.””After the video, all hell broke loose. Four directors started writing… one of them wrote to me saying we can’t fight a big organisation like the BCCI, look at what happened to Lalit Modi. I said where is the question of fighting? Where is the comparison between us and Lalit Modi,” Malhotra said. “Then the four of them got together and fired an email to me. On top of that, one of the directors, I don’t know who, released the email to the press. I was being outvoted on everything, but I was keeping quiet. But now they are saying don’t go public, but they are leaking emails to the media.”Then they sent an apology to the BCCI without consulting me. For that video. I just wanted to know if you have sent an apology why didn’t you inform me? Am I not a board member? I am the president. If the four of you discuss and decide, it’s not done, it’s taking things too far. So I have now gone public too. It’s a democratic set-up, we are answerable to our stakeholders. What is the role of the president? Am I the president or the (servant)?”Malhotra said that he would next take his point of view to the stakeholders, the former cricketers who fall under the ICA’s umbrella. “The Supreme Court ordered the BCCI to have an ICA, it was compulsory, and it was compulsory for them to give us funds, which they have done – they have given Rs 2 crore,” he said. “We have Rs 1.35 crore in our account. No problem there. But it’s become very dirty. Once you go public, you open the Pandora’s Box. Hopefully we come to a compromise.””We have been shoved down the BCCI’s throat. But whether they love us or hate us, we are here to stay. Whether anybody likes it or not, whether we can do our work or not, whether I am there or someone else, we are not under BCCI, we are not in conflict with BCCI. We are an independent entity.”
