IPL title rights: from INR 40 crore per year, to 444 crore, to 222 crore

2008-12 – DLF pays INR 200 croreDLF, an Indian real estate company, won the title rights for the first five seasons of the tournament for INR 200 crore (about USD 50 million at the time). DLF’s winning bid was INR 75 crore more than the base price of INR 125 crore set by the BCCI.2013-17 – Pepsico nearly doubles the valueThe popularity of the IPL seemed to be in doubt following the termination of the Deccan Chargers in 2012 and when DLF opted not to renew its contract with the BCCI. Earlier that year it had also decided to end its term as title sponsor of the Champions League T20. All those fears were swept away, however, after global beverage giant Pepsico paid INR 396.8 crore (USD 71.77 million approx, then) to bag the IPL title rights for five years. That was nearly INR 100 crore more than the base price of INR 300 crore set by the BCCI.2015-17 – Pepsico transfers rights to VivoVivo, the Chinese handset manufacturer, bought title rights for the 2016 and 2017 IPL seasons after Pepsico decided to terminate its contract two years before it was meant to expire. Pepsico’s decision was owing to the 2013 IPL corruption scandal which resulted in the Supreme Court banning Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals for two seasons. The IPL contract allowed Pepsico to transfer the title rights to another company. Although the BCCI never revealed what the deal was worth, it is understood Vivo continued to pay the same sum as Pepsico – around INR 80 crore per year for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.2017-22 – Vivo retains rights paying nearly INR 3000 croreWith the Indian mobile economy growing exponentially, Vivo renewed its IPL title-rights deal, paying a record sum of INR 2199 crores (nearly USD 341 million then) for the 2018-22 period. The amount was a 454% jump from the Pepsico deal and assured the BCCI nearly INR 444 crore annually.2020 – Vivo presses pause, Dream11 steps inThis June, the BCCI said it would “review” all its sponsorship contracts involving Chinese investments after the skirmishes across the India-China border. Vivo finally decided to suspend its IPL contract for the 2020 season. On Tuesday BCCI announced Dream11 would replace Vivo as IPL’s title sponsors for 2020, with the contract lasting until December 31 this year. The deal was worth INR 222 crores, which is half of the annual payout assured from the original Vivo deal.

Tom Taylor, Ben Mike hit half-centuries to lift Leicestershire

Home side recover from 54 for 5 thanks to lower-order resilience

Half-centuries from allrounders Tom Taylor and Ben Mike helped Leicestershire recover from 54 for 5 to reach a total which kept the Foxes in the game on the first day of their Bob Willis Trophy match against Nottinghamshire at the Fischer County Ground.A greenish pitch, heavy cloud and a strong wind meant it was a good toss for Steven Mullaney to win, and the Notts’ skipper cannot have thought long before putting the home team in to bat. The ball swung and seamed from the start, and though Leicestershire opener Sam Evans had an early reprieve when he was badly dropped at second slip by Mullaney in Zak Chappell’s first over, he did not last much longer, flicking indeterminately at a widish delivery from Peter Trego to give Lyndon James catching practice at third slip.Harry Dearden also left the field berating himself after clipping a Trego inswinger into the leg side without keeping the ball down and seeing Samit Patel take a good low catch at midwicket, reducing the home side to 15 for 2.In-form Leicestershire captain Colin Ackermann had scored only 4 when he received a delivery from Trego that pitched in line and swung sharply away to take the edge, Mullaney making up for his earlier miss by holding the catch in the slips.Hassan Azad had also made just 4, off 40 balls, when he sliced an attempted drive at James and Ben Slater held the catch at backward point.Chappell also picked up the first man dismissed after lunch, bowling a fine delivery which straightened to take the edge of George Rhodes’ bat, wicketkeeper Tom Moores taking a straightforward catch behind the stumps to leave Leicestershire five down and in trouble, but Taylor joined Harry Swindells in wresting the initiative back from the bowling side.He was fortunate to be dropped on 6, at mid-off off Chappell, and twice fortunate not to be run out on 47, but hit six fours and a huge straight six in reaching his half-century off just 60 balls.A partnership of 81 was broken when left-arm spinner Patel found enough turn to trap Swindells leg before wicket for 33, and only two more runs had been added when Taylor ran out of luck, cutting left-arm seamer Tom Barber high to third man, where Chappell held the catch.Mike played beautifully, however, and found good support from James Weighell, the Durham loanee on Leicestershire debut. He too hit six fours and went to his fifty by hooking Barber for a huge six over long leg, the ball disappearing out of the ground.Leicestershire should have picked up at least one wicket of their own before the close, but Rhodes put Slater down, a two-handed chest-high chance at third slip, when the left-hander was on 3. Haseeb Hameed played fluently in going to 34 as Notts finished the day trailing by 174 with all ten first-innings wickets intact.

The English full-back was handed his senior debut by Klopp in 2016 and it was under the German manager's tutelage that Alexander-Arnold established himself as one of the top defenders in the Premier League. However, the 25-year-old recently spoke highly of new Reds boss Slot while outlining his ambitions under the Dutch coach.

The England international also revealed the early conversations he had with Slot after he took charge of the club this summer and how the ex-Feyenoord boss has been helping him to further grow as a footballer by scrutinising his performances.

WHAT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD SAID

The Reds defender said to reporters: "I said to him [Slot] that I would like to be the defender that no one wants to come up against in Europe. We agreed that he will be harsh on me. If any time an attacker gets by me and gets past me, he will call it out in meetings, and individual meetings, and say this cannot happen.

"We go through every game together and he highlights where he wants me to improve. Even after the Milan game, we had about 20 clips going through what I could have done better and the good parts as well."

He added: "It is really refreshing to have a manager who will help and guide and teach me how to be better as a player. I am someone who wants to learn, someone who wants to be the best and someone who strives to be the best ever."

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Crystal Palace and U.S. international Chris Richards are still looking for their first three points of the season, but they'll be more than content with a draw against heavily-favored Manchester United.

Richards had arguably his best performance of the season in the 0-0 draw, having five tackles, five clearances and two interceptions in the contest.

Manchester United largely dominated proceedings, with 66.8 percent of total possession and 15 shots compared to Palace's nine. Still, held firm at Selhurst Park to secure the upset.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Palace has three points in their opening five matches, raising concern they might be one of the Premier League teams fighting for survival this season. Still, this result has to be a confidence boost for Oliver Glasner's side.

With Mauricio Pochettino now officially on board as the U.S.'s new manager, Richards will want to prove he deserves to remain within the national team's starting XI. He didn't disappoint Saturday.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Palace aren't off to the best of starts this season, but it pales in comparison to their worst-ever start in the 2015-16 season. During that campaign, Palace lost all their opening five matches.

Palace was last relegated in 2005 and have been in the Premier League since the 2013-14 season after securing promotion.

Todd Boehly could now sell Chelsea forward who only joined in 2023

Chelsea and Todd Boehly could now sell an attacking player who they signed just last year, as the west Londoners look to trim Enzo Maresca's squad, bolster his transfer kitty and back their new manager with fresh faces.

Players who Chelsea could sell this summer

In a boost for co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, who are set to oversee Chelsea's recruitment drive in the next few weeks, it is now believed they do not have to sell players by June 30.

The consensus was that Chelsea were under pressure to agree sales by that date, or risk sanctions, as doubts surrounded their ability to adhere to PSR's limit of making a £105 million loss over a rolling three-year period.

Sky Sports recently claimed that Chelsea don't need to sell players this month to comply with PSR, and will instead need to sell for the 2024/2025 cut off next year, but there is plenty of time before that deadline.

Moises Caicedo

£115 million

Enzo Fernandez

£107 million

Mykhalo Mudryk

£88 million

Wesley Fofana

£72 million

Marc Cucurella

£58 million

While this comes as good news, there are still many members of Maresca's squad who could be shown the exit door. Indeed, Romelu Lukaku, Armando Broja, Conor Gallagher, Malang Sarr, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Trevoh Chalobah, Ian Maatsen, Omari Hutchinson and Conor Gallagher have all been named as players who Chelsea could sell this summer.

This comes as Fabrizio Romano says that Chelsea are set for a busy summer, and could bring in multiple key signings across many areas of the team.

"It will continue to be a busy summer at Chelsea," said Romano on Chelsea's transfer plans after bringing in Maresca to replace Pochettino.

"It won’t be completely crazy but they will try to make smart things happen, including a new goalkeeper and I expect them to try for at least one new centre-back, but it could be two. I also expect Chelsea to be busy with the striker position."

The Blues will need funding, as they look to comply with PSR for next year, certain players will need to be off the books. A potentially surprising new candidate for the exit door, though, is David Datro Fofana.

The Ivory Coast international only joined from Molde in January 2023, spending last season on loan at Burnley and scoring four goals in 15 appearances.

Fofana could now leave Chelsea this summer

According to The Athletic, Fofana could be on his way out of Chelsea this summer, and it is believed they wish to attract offers for the 21-year-old. The forward, despite impressing in parts during his time at Turf Moor, did attract some criticism from Vincent Kompany.

“He can still get better,” Kompany said of Fofana after a win over Brentford. “That’s what we want to do with him because he scored one but he could have scored two or three. For probably 45 minutes he gave us what we needed defensively, but the other 45 minutes he could have done more."

Bursting of England's bubble shows how long the road to 2023 will be

First home ODI series defeat since 2015 reveals areas for improvement in World Cup cycle

George Dobell16-Sep-2020If part of the art of success in limited-overs cricket is peaking at the right time, England haven’t timed their dip in results too badly. There’s never a good time to lose to Australia, of course. Particularly given that the result was 5-0 to England the last time they visited. But this is still the early stages of the new four-year cycle towards the next World Cup. If ever there was a time to experiment and learn, it is now. Come the start of that tournament, in October 2023, the details of this series – fascinating though they are – will not be most people’s first frame of reference. On that basis alone, it may well prove unwise to read too much into this defeat. This is the first bilateral ODI series England have lost since January 2017 in India, after all. The first they have lost in England since 2015, when Australia were, again, the victors. Their long-term record remains excellent. And, in the end, they lost this match by a whisker to what Eoin Morgan admitted, quite accurately, looked “a better side”.In many ways, England will take a lot of heart from this series. For if there’s one quality that shone out it was their resilience. In all three of these ODIs – and in the first T20I against the same opposition – there were moments when it appeared as if they were going to be on the wrong end of a drubbing. To have won two of those matches and gone close in the two others demonstrates a certain amount of self-confidence and fight.”The positive is we can win when we don’t play our best games,” Morgan said afterwards. “We’ve seen the guys show belief and fight. Australia have out-played us but sometimes when you do that [win easily] you take things for granted. But these contests have been so tight we’ve learned a huge amount.”It’s worth remembering, too, what Morgan said ahead of the series. He said he welcomed the prospect of playing on lower, slower surfaces which provided assistance to spin as they considered both an area of weakness and a likely scenario ahead of the tournament in India. In that case, he will have learned plenty. And in some respects, it is that England have a long way to go before they can be considered favourites to retain their title. For, if they’re really honest, they will accept they were flattered a bit by the margin of defeat in the first game, escaped from jail in the second and saw a couple of familiar failings come back to haunt them in the third.”We’ve learned quite a lot about the group playing on slower wickets,” Morgan continued. “Having an opportunity to play on them for three games in a row is a rare one for us. It hasn’t gone our way, but certainly we have addressed an area of our game that is our weakest. We now have time to take it and work on it.”The thing they must improve most, in all formats, is their fielding. Whether in T20Is, Tests or ODIs, too many chances are going down to sustain serious hopes of winning the biggest tournaments. Morgan suggested his side missed the intensity created by a live audience, which is, no doubt, a factor. But it was telling that Australia seemed to manage far better.Glenn Maxwell and Alex Carey hold the Royal London One Day Series trophy•Getty ImagesTwo chances went down in this game. The first, Jofra Archer seeing a drive from Marcus Stoinis burst through his hands at mid-off, did not prove costly. But the second, Jos Buttler failing to cling on to a sharp but, by these standards, pretty much regulation chance offered by Glenn Maxwell off Adil Rashid when he had 44, was arguably the turning point of the game. The England management maintain they are working hard on the team’s fielding and no doubt that’s the case. But whatever they’re doing isn’t working. It’s an area that requires a rethink.Might that include Buttler behind the stumps? Probably not. He’s clearly an outstanding batsman in this format – despite a series average of 4.00 – and has performed decently with the gloves in the white-ball game. You only have to think back World Cup final to know that. But he is not convincing standing up to the spinners. Not in any format. And with the World Cup set to be played in India, it is an area that will require attention. There may be a vacancy in the spin-bowling department, too. The decision to leave out Moeen Ali on these surfaces was revealing. In normal circumstances, you might have thought England would even have considered playing a third spinner on such pitches but, with confidence in Moeen waning, they elected to pick only Rashid.ALSO READ: Maxwell, Carey centuries seal thrilling series win for AustraliaIt was understandable, too. Since the start of July 2018, Moeen is averaging 16.20 with the bat in 27 ODIs and has taken just 13 wickets at a cost of 86 apiece. His economy rate in that period – 5.75 – isn’t too bad but, by comparison, Adil Rashid’s is 5.71 (and his average 32.85) in the same period, Nathan Lyon’s is 5.01, while Mitchell Santner and Ravi Jadeja both concede 4.88 an over. Yes, Joe Root deputised nicely at Emirates Old Trafford. But at a World Cup in India, England may want to consider him a third spinner at best.Liam Plunkett has been missed, too. He would, if fit, have been awkward to face on these surfaces, in particular, and at this stage England look no closer to replacing his middle over wickets. It wasn’t necessarily wrong to move on from him – he is 35 now and unlikely to remain a viable selection by the time this World Cup cycle comes to a conclusion – but it was a reminder of how much he offered and the need to replace him.

In general, this series was probably a useful wake-up call. England do not have a great recent record of resetting after achieving their targets. Consider the fate of the Test side which, having reached No. 1 in the rankings in 2011, was defeated by Pakistan, South Africa (at home), Australia and Sri Lanka (at home) over the next few years.Equally, when they travelled to Australia in 2006-07, they remained wedded to the team who had claimed the historic Ashes victory in 2005. Instead of refreshing it with younger player, they relied upon a team that was, in several cases, well past its best. So, coming up against a strong, motivated Australia team here may have been just the reminder of the levels required to maintain success at this level. Defeat will sting. There’s a bigger issue here, of course. The fact that we were able to see a result at all – the fact we’ve been treated to some terrifically entertaining cricket over these last two-and-a-half months – must be considered a great success. Bearing in mind the position we were in a few months ago, the achieving of playing the entire men’s international schedule is remarkable. It will help keep the professional game’s head just above the water. There are many to credit for this achievement with Steve Elworthy, the man who also ran the World Cup, a primary candidate. But England also owe plenty to West Indies, Pakistan, Ireland and Australia who have, in some cases, sent teams from regions where Covid-19 appeared to be less of a threat in order to help the ECB survive. This spirit must be remembered when future decisions about the game’s global finances are made. The coming weeks will see debates about the need to cut the pay of England’s top players. And, in the circumstances, it’s probably only right they share the pain. But it must also be remembered that some of them have spent 90 days, with very brief breaks here and there, in a hugely limiting bio-bubble.They decided long ago not to make any public complaint about this but to have been separated from their families, to have been unable to leave the ground, to have been stuck in the increasingly claustrophobic environment is some way more demanding that they have let on. Whatever the result of this ODI series, they – and all the other teams who visited this summer – deserve a lot of credit for that.

While United's players have also seen their fair share of criticism for the shaky start to the season, nobody has been as sharply questioned as Ten Hag has. The Dutchman's job security is at an all-time low despite being handed a two-year extension earlier in the summer. Regardless, Ten Hag has claimed he remains unfazed by the noise surrounding his team.

Speaking to the media, Ten Hag said: "Yeah, first of all, respect the criticism. There are many. You can have an opinion about football, when you are in a job, you have to deal with this. But I can't take every criticism into account. I don't read, of course, all the criticism, not even possible, but I don't want either to know.

"It's about: I need to know some, and some are very good advices… but for me, it's stay clinical, and see where the team is, which areas we have to improve. Stay also methodical, that you guide the team in the right pathway, and make sure you make the right steps to get the best out of the team."

David Hussey open to the idea of Andre Russell batting up the order for Kolkata Knight Riders

Andre Russell may bat as high as No. 3 for the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2020, if team mentor David Hussey is to be believed.Having rescued the Knight Riders in chasing down 50-plus runs in under three overs on multiple occasions last season, while also failing to take the team across the line on occasions where he was padded up – and in the dug-out – for far too longer than he would’ve liked, Russell had expressed his disappointment at getting to face too few balls. But now with Eoin Morgan in the squad for the 2020 season, the responsibility of being the Knight Riders’ designated finisher does not lie solely on Russell.”Why not?” Hussey said, when asked at a press conference if Russell would bat up the order in IPL 2020. “If it benefits the team and helps us win games of cricket, why not. If he comes in at No. 3 and bats 60 balls, he might even score a double-hundred. Anything can happen with Dre Russ. He is almost the heartbeat of the team.”Hussey also said Morgan’s experience as England’s long-term white-ball – and ODI World Cup-winning – captain would be irreplaceable and expected him to be the deputy that the Knight Riders captain Dinesh Karthik can rely on. Along with Russell and Karthik, he outlined Morgan as one of the Knight Riders’ three anchors with the bat.”He’s huge, isn’t he?” Hussey said of Morgan. “Classy player, classy performer, Morgan’s going to be a great ally for Karthik.”He may be fielding in the ring talking to the bowlers while the captain is behind the stumps keeping wickets. He’s a cool, calm and collected person and will also be a handy batman controlling the middle overs with Karthik. I expect a really good relationship between them, and his calm head can win us many games through the tournament.”One decision that the Knight Riders haven’t taken yet, according to Hussey, is who the openers will be this season, especially after Chris Lynn was not retained at December’s auction. The obvious contenders are Shubman Gill, Sunil Narine and Tom Banton, but he was certain of one thing that the Knight Riders will not move away from the “aggressive” opening template that has been their blueprint for the past three seasons under the previous coach Jacques Kallis, who was replaced by Brendon McCullum in August 2019.”It’s up for discussion at the moment, and the head coach, Abhishek Nayar and Karthik are yet to decide that,” Hussey said. “If anyone knows McCullum, he plays the game at 100 miles an hour and encourages his players to take the game on.”With regards to Shubman Gill, he’s just one hell of a talent. Leave him alone, let him play, and you can see him score hundred after hundred in the IPL.”
