  • WHAT HAPPENED?

U.S. men’s national team captain Tyler Adams says the squad is ignoring outside criticism, including recent pointed comments from Landon Donovan, after Christian Pulisic opted out of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

"We don't talk about that internally as a group," Adams told the Associated Press. "The noise on the outside is the noise on the outside. I think we need to focus on what we need to do as a group and continue to build."

Donovan, while serving as an analyst for FOX’s coverage of the EURO Nations League, took a thinly veiled shot at Pulisic without naming him directly. While praising Cristiano Ronaldo’s commitment to Portugal at age 40, Donovan expressed frustration with unnamed USMNT players who declined to join the squad this summer.

“This is what it means to represent your country,” Donovan said. “And if you don’t want to take this, as a professional soccer player and someone who gets the opportunity to wear that jersey and take it seriously and responsibly, then don’t come in… I can’t help but think about some of our guys on vacation right now not wanting to play in the Gold Cup. It’s p*ssing me off.”

Pulisic’s father later responded on social media, telling Donovan to “look in the mirror.” Clint Dempsey also weighed in on his podcast, saying, “I always wanted to play in those games.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The U.S., which has lost four straight games for the first time since 2011, fell to Switzerland 4-0 Tuesday evening in their final tune-up match ahead of this summer's Gold Cup.

"This is part of the process," Adams said. "You're going to win games. You're going to lose games. It's about continuing to build that. I think we're on the right path. We have to continue to build and try the things that we've been training. It'll take a little bit of time, but it will come together."

Adams, who didn't dress for the affair due to a minor injury, is hoping to be ready for their opening game of the competition against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday.

"A little turf toe-type injury. More of an overuse thing probably than anything — overload. It was something that I picked up when I came into camp," Adams said. "Progressing well right now, but just trying to be smart and manage it."

  • ADAMS REFLECTS ON INJURY RECOVERY

This past campaign, Adams appeared in 28 Premier League matches for Bournemouth – a career-high for the after he missed a large chunk of the 2023-24 season due to injury, where he was limited to just three showings.

"It's definitely enjoyable when you're healthy," he said. "The 16 to 18 months that it was just on and off inconsistency is something I never had in my career and never had to battle. And then when it hits you and you go through that, you just learn different ways to navigate things, enjoy life, just not take things for granted, all the little things."

The U.S., who played their 10th game under manager Mauricio Pochettino on Tuesday, are trying to play more freely on the pitch, breaking away from the previously confined structure that was deployed under former manager Gregg Berhalter.

"From a positional standpoint, obviously we had probably a little bit of a different structure under Gregg," Adams said. "Mauricio gives the players freedom to find spots they're comfortable in and see how they can affect the game in different ways. I think our attacking players definitely have freedom to try and find the ball and create things in the right areas of the field. So, yeah, I think he gives everyone freedom, but there's still structure to the way that we want to play."

    WHAT NEXT FOR ADAMS?

The U.S. play Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday in their opening Group Stage match of the Gold Cup.

Better than Estevao: Chelsea lost one of "England's biggest jewels" for £0

Chelsea were beaten for the eighth time in the Premier League this season when they lost 1-0 to London rivals Arsenal at The Emirates on Sunday.

A header from Mikel Merino in the first half was enough to secure all three points for the home side, as the Blues blanked without Cole Palmer to rely upon in the final third.

Jadon Sancho and Pedro Neto were selected on the flanks and combined for zero shots on target and zero chances created for their teammates in the match.

Unfortunately, Chelsea’s wingers failing to make much of an impact at the top end of the pitch has become a recurring theme for the club throughout the season.

None of Enzo Maresca’s wide forwards have more than seven goals or more than four assists in the Premier League this term, which shows that they have all failed to provide consistency in the final third.

Jadon Sancho for Chelsea

Chelsea may, now, be hoping that teenage talent Estevao Willian can come in and offer what they have been missing out wide when he eventually arrives at Cobham later this year.

Why Estevao Willian could solve Chelsea's problems

The Brazil international is not due to officially sign for the Blues until his 18th birthday, which is not until April, and this means that they have had to wait until next season to bring him into the fold at Stamford Bridge.

A right-winger by trade, Estevao plays in the position that Chelsea have struggled with in the Premier League this term, as none of their wingers have offered a constant threat as a scorer or a creator of goals on either flank.

Young Brazilian star Estevao Willian

The 17-year-old attacker’s form for Palmeiras suggests that the potential is there for him to offer the consistency that they have lacked with the likes of Sancho, Noni Madueke, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Neto.

To date, Estevao has racked up 20 goals and ten assists in 59 appearances for Palmeiras at first-team level, with five goals in 13 league matches in the current campaign.

As you can see in the clip above, the teenage sensation has had some brilliant moments in his young career already, twisting and turning Brazilian defences inside and out.

If he can translate these exciting performances over to England in the summer then Chelsea could have the winger that they have been crying out for, due to his ability to score and assist goals at an impressive rate.

Estevao Willian for Palmeiras.

However, Estevao has yet to test himself outside of his home country and remains an unknown quantity at Premier League and Champions League level, so it cannot be said for certain that he will come in and be an instant success at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea will be hoping that he can fulfil his potential with the Blues, though, to avoid becoming the latest young player to fail to make the grade at Cobham before thriving elsewhere.

When Chelsea fumbled one of England's biggest jewels

The club have fumbled a number of highly impressive young talents over the years and it is Maresca’s job to ensure that Estevao gets every chance to become a success at Stamford Bridge.

Unfortunately, the likes of Michael Olise, Declan Rice, and Jamal Musiala, among others, were let go by the Blues before they got a chance to emerge in the senior side.

As you can see in the table above, Levi Colwill is the only player in the top five most valuable former Chelsea academy graduates who currently plays for the first-team.

Musiala, who joined Bayern Munich at U17 level in 2019, might be one star that they rue losing more than most, as his value has soared to a staggering £118m, and he has racked up 60 goals and 35 assists in 201 matches for the German side.

One lesser-known fumble by Chelsea, however, is that they also missed out on the chance to house England U21 international Ethan Nwaneri in their academy system, and he is now an even bigger talent than Estevao.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

Transfermarkt does not state that the Arsenal star ever had a spell in Chelsea’s academy, but Gunners star Myles Lewis-Skelly recently revealed that he and Nwaneri were both at Cobham together in their younger days.

He told Arsenal’s website: “Before I joined Arsenal, I knew Ethan Nwaneri because we were at Chelsea together and we’ve kind of gone up the ranks together. “

Whether or not Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly were fully in their academy system, or on trial, we don’t know, but what we do know is that they fumbled the chance to keep them at the club. Since then, the duo have become key cogs at Arsenal, flourishing under Mikel Arteta.

Nwaneri was described as one of “England’s biggest jewels” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, and is only a month younger than Estevao, but has already showcased his quality in the Premier League and the Champions League.

As you can see in the table above, Nwaneri has scored eight goals and provided one assist in his 12 starts in those three first-team competitions this season as an attacking midfielder or right winger.

Unlike Estevao, who has only proven himself in Brazil so far, the English phenomenon has emerged as a quality option for Mikel Arteta to call upon on the biggest stages in England and Europe.

Nwaneri, who became the youngest Premier League player in history at 15 years and 181 days old in 2022, has made a fast start to life at senior level with the Gunners, with eight goals in 31 matches, and looks to be getting better-and-better with more first-team exposure.

Therefore, Chelsea must regret that they were unable to keep hold of him, and Lewis-Skelly, when they were at Cobham earlier in his career, because he has now emerged as one of the biggest English prospects around – as per Kulig – and looks to be an even bigger talent than Estevao.

Until the Brazilian forward makes the step over to England in the summer, the soon-to-be Chelsea attacker has not proven himself in the biggest leagues or competitions in the world, which means that he is behind Nwaneri as a proven talent at this moment in time.

The Blues, though, will now be hoping that Estevao will hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge next season and outperform the Arsenal star in the Premier League, and the Champions League.

Thunder and Stars win WBBL and BBL draft lotteries

Sydney Thunder will have the first pick in the inaugural WBBL overseas draft, while Melbourne Stars will get the first pick in the BBL draft that will be held on the same day on September 3, following the draft lottery that was held last Friday.Cricket Australia (CA) announced the draft lottery results on Monday afternoon and confirmed that the two drafts will be held back-to-back in Melbourne,, with both drafts to be televised on Foxtel and Kayo.CA held the inaugural BBL draft last year and have added an identical WBBL draft this year including a weighted lottery to decide the first pick.Related

  • MCG and SCG to host standalone WBBL games for the first time

In the WBBL, the four teams who missed the finals last season – Sydney Thunder, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars and Perth Scorchers – had entries in the first pot to see who would get the first pick. Thunder had four entries, Renegades three, Stars two and Scorchers one, which was based on where they finished on the table last season. Thunder, who finished last and had the most chances in the lottery, gained the number one pick, followed by Renegades, Scorchers and Stars.WBBL draft order 2023-24•Cricket Australia

Last year’s finalists, Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Sixers were placed in a second weighted lottery to determine picks 5 through 8. Hurricanes claimed pick 5, followed by Heat, Sixers and last year’s WBBL champions Strikers. The WBBL draft will follow the same rules as the men’s BBL draft. The overseas players who have been nominated for the draft will be divided into four salary categories, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. Platinum players will earn AUD$110,000 to be paid by the clubs from the AUD$732,000 salary cap. Gold players will earn AUD$90,000, Silver AUD$65,000 and Bronze will earn $AUD40,000.There will be four draft rounds with the first round being for Platinum players only and the second round being for Platinum and Gold players. The first two rounds will go in draft order, but in the third round, the order will reverse. In the WBBL draft, Strikers will have the last picks in round one and round two at picks 8 and 16 but will have the first pick in round three with pick 17. They will then have the last pick, 32, in the fourth round as the order reverses again.Stars will get the first pick in the men’s BBL draft after finishing eighth last season. Stars were followed by Strikers, Hurricanes and Renegades in the lottery for the first four picks. Thunder, Sixers, Heat and two-time defending BBL champions Scorchers will have picks 5 through 8 in that order.BBL draft order 2023-24•Cricket Australia

There has been an increase in the men’s BBL overseas salary bands after the salary cap was increased from AUD$1.9 million to AUD$3 million. Platinum players are now set to earn AUD$420,000, up from AUD$340,000 last year although there are caveats for the Platinum players this year. They will only earn the full amount if they are available for the entire season including finals, which runs from December 7 to January 24. If they are only available for 10 matches, they will earn AUD$400,000. If they can only play nine matches the, price will be AUD$380,000. Players only available for eight matches or less in the Platinum category will earn AUD$360,000 regardless of whether they play one game or eight.Gold players will earn AUD$300,000, Silver AUD$200,000, and Bronze AUD$100,000 with no minimum matches required for those players. As of last year, there will be one retention pick available for each club in both the BBL and WBBL drafts. Rashid Khan was the first player retained under this rule in the men’s draft last year after Stars tried to take him ahead of Strikers’ first pick. Clubs will only have to use their next pick in the same round to retain an overseas player who played for them last season. The BBL and WBBL have added a new dimension to the draft with teams able to trade picks in the lead-up to the draft. Picks can only be traded within each round. It is not mandatory to take a Platinum player, with Scorchers opting to pass in the first round last year. But clubs cannot trade out of the first round in order to gain an extra pick in the second or third round and vice-versa.Nominations are open for overseas players to enter the draft, with both league and club officials already commencing discussions with players and agents. Those discussions will likely ramp up during the Hundred in August and CA is expected to announce some of the marquee player nominations in the coming weeks ahead of the draft.

Lyon injury could yet define this Test

If you wanted any more comparisons to 2005, was this the Glenn McGrath moment?

Andrew McGlashan29-Jun-2023At around 4.30pm, Nathan Lyon, playing his 100th consecutive Test, set off to chase a ball towards the Grand Stand boundary. He pulled up and started to limp, a few moments later he was hobbling towards the dressing room. England were 182 for 1 and Australia had, at least for the day, likely the match and maybe even the series, lost a specialist bowler, one with 496 Test wickets to his name. If you wanted any more comparisons to 2005, was this the Glenn McGrath moment? It had already been a day where Australia had let slip their grip on the contest. It had started late on the first evening when they handed two wickets to Joe Root shortly before the second new ball. Although Steven Smith crafted a superb century, the slide continued on Thursday morning and in all their last seven wickets fell for 100. From England’s point of view a total of 416 isn’t a great result when you’ve asked a side to bat, but they had not been shut out the way Smith and Travis Head had threatened to.A few hours later, Lyon was being helped off the field, a fate he had avoided since being recalled midway through the 2013 Ashes – the corresponding fixture on this ground was the last Test he did not play. The sun was breaking through the clouds, the pitch was looking flat, England’s second-wicket pair of Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope had put together 91 in 20 overs at that point and Cameron Green was struggling to keep his foot behind the line.Related

England loosen grip on Lord's Test in the face of short-ball barrage after Duckett 98

Pat Cummins knew there would be times when he would be challenged in this series. There had been some at Edgbaston, but here was one he would have hoped to avoid. With frontline spin not an option, they went for the short-ball plan and England obligingly helped them out. There was more than a hint of Ben Stokes’ own Bazball tactics in the way Cummins marshaled his side. Not that England’s batters needed much persuading, but he dared them to take it on with fielders scattered in the deep and they were happy to roll the dice. It was only Stokes, himself, who brought a modicum of calm to proceedings.”We felt like we were in the game for a lot of the time there,” Smith said. “Until probably Stokes, he came out and he was starting to duck under a few, but we were setting the fields and they were taking it on and creating opportunities.”It was interesting. Most of the fast bowlers, they probably wouldn’t want to keep charging in bowling the short stuff but while it looked as likely as it did, on a pretty benign surface, it was the right way to go. If you get under a few then might stop doing it. They kept taking it on and kept presenting opportunities for us.”Pope picked out deep square leg, Duckett found long leg two short of a second century at Lord’s and Root was brilliantly caught by Smith at backward square leg having been given a life second ball when Green overstepped in the same over he claimed Pope. All of a sudden it was 222 for 4 and Australia’s predicament was not quite so bad. It would have been 243 for 5 had Marnus Labuschagne not spilled Harry Brook at square leg on 25.However, barring a remarkable recovery from Lyon overnight Australia face the rest of this game without someone who has been ever present, and recently a consistent matchwinner. Green, bowling at Lord’s for the first time, sent down six no-balls in his seven scattergun overs but the importance of his presence in Australia’s attack has grown significantly in the light of Lyon’s injury.Nathan Lyon sits off the field injured•Getty ImagesHe will at least allow Cummins to spread the load between himself, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood – whose energy levels will soon be depleted if they have to sustain the short-ball approach – with some help from Head’s not-to-be-underrated offspin. The last over of the day was sent down by Smith, and could it be that he has a role to play on the ground where he began as a legspinner in 2010 (and claimed his career-best 3 for 18 in 2013)?Australia’s bowlers have accepted they will need to look at their bowling figures in a different light during this series. At one stage Starc, who had briefly found some swing with the new ball, was conceding seven an over but as he did in the World Test Championship final, where he claimed Virat Kohli, found a way to claim the big prize of Root. Hazlewood dragged his economy back from above a run-a-ball.When Lyon left the stage, he was conceding just 2.69 an over to further highlight the role he was playing. England did show Head’s offspin significant respect as Stokes brought an element of balance to the innings in the closing half an hour, although that could be different when there isn’t stumps to play for.England, you would assume, will have a run chase to try and win this match at some stage in the next few days. The early history of Bazball was defined by their inhibitions of hunting down big targets last season against New Zealand and India. Most likely Australia will not have their frontline spinner. Lyon’s injury hasn’t quite defined the game yet, but it might yet do so if England’s batters don’t offer the visitors a way out.

O treinador rubro-negro manterá a estratégia e escalará o “time B” no clássico carioca.

European side now make £8m Rangers star their priority target this summer

In what could deal the 49ers an instant blow at Ibrox, one European club are reportedly now prioritising a move to sign one of Rangers’ best players when the summer transfer window swings open.

49ers could be dealt instant Rangers blow

The 49ers certainly have a hefty task on their hands when it comes to catching Celtic in the Scottish Premiership. The Bhoys have raced away towards yet another league title this season in a reign of dominance which has looked unlikely to end since the beginning of the campaign. Rangers, meanwhile, have struggled on the domestic front yet again.

That said, the Gers did at least manage to get one over on their rivals in the Old Firm derby last time out, scoring late on to win a five-goal thriller 3-2 in front of the Celtic Park faithful.

The hero of the hour, Hamza Igamane, has been a rare bright spark in a season to forget for the Scottish giants. At just 22 years old, the forward looks destined for big things, however, and that could yet see the Gers suffer a frustrating exit.

According to French news outlet But, Marseille have now made signing Igamane a summer priority in a deal that would cost them just £8m in the coming months. The Ligue 1 giants aren’t alone in their interest though, with the likes of Everton also linked with the forward’s signature in recent weeks.

Scored winner vs Rangers: 49ers may now land bargain deal for "special" ace

He’s set to become a free agent this summer.

ByTom Cunningham Mar 19, 2025

From Old Firm hero, Igamane could break Ibrox hearts this summer. Having only just arrived last summer, the in-demand striker may well be forced to make the most important decision of his career so far when the transfer window opens. Rangers, meanwhile, could be left fearing the worst.

Rangers must keep hold of "brilliant" Igamane

With 14 goals to his name in all competitions, including four in eight Europa League games, it’s not just in the Old Firm derby that Igamane has stolen the headlines at Rangers this season. The Moroccan has been the main man at Ibrox and could yet fire the Gers to another European outing to remember when Athletic Club come to town in April.

Earning plenty of praise as a result of his fine form, former Rangers man Derek Ferguson told reporters when asked about Igamane earlier this season: “Igamane is a real breath of fresh air, the young man.

“The manager said he was trying to get him up to speed, but in the last few games, he has been nothing short of brilliant. He is off the cuff and he had three or four nutmegs this afternoon – and took his goal brilliantly. I don’t know if you remember Ted McMinn, but Igamane’s got that unpredictability.”

Whether it’s Everton, Marseille or another interested party, Rangers must keep hold of Igamane if they are to stand any chance of catching Celtic next season. As the 49ers look to make their mark, the young forward is likely to be their biggest star.

Eight balls later, however, the rain and the covers returned with just one run added to the overnight score. Two balls after the resumption, Northeast was bowled by Chris Wright having not added to his overnight score.Ul Hassan followed him back to the pavilion shortly afterwards when he was caught in the slips by Louis Kimber for 33 off the bowling of Matt Salisbury. And Kiran Carlson was then bowled by Wright for 1 having faced only eight balls to leave the hosts on 57 for 4 and 3 for 3 from the first six overs of the morning. It was left to Chris Cooke and Billy Root to try to rebuild the innings and Root signalled his intent with successive boundaries off Wright to finally get things moving for Glamorgan. But Root’s revival didn’t last long as he was out for 12 having edged Tom Scriven to Kimber, who made an excellent catch at third slip to reduce the home side to 73 for 5.That brought Neser to the crease and he and Cooke survived the Leicestershire onslaught to take Glamorgan to 86 for 5 at lunch. But, having been dropped by Kimber in the final over of the morning session, Cooke was given out lbw to Scriven from the first ball after lunch for 10.In the very next over, Timm van der Gugten drove Salisbury for four and was then promptly caught behind by wicketkeeper Peter Handscomb off the following ball to leave Glamorgan in trouble on 93 for 7.When Harris was dropped on 10 by Colin Ackermann in the slips, it looked as if the innings would be wrapped up in no time and Leicestershire were eyeing an improbable victory. But Harris and Neser made the most of that life to steer the home side to 218 for 7 at tea and almost certainly take a positive result out of the equation.Harris was eventually out lbw to Scriven just after tea, but fellow Australian Swepson’s aggressive approach allowed Neser to complete his first home century for Glamorgan and earn his side an unlikely fourth batting bonus point.Swepson reached his maiden first-class 50 with a smart pull for four and was finally stumped by Handscomb off the bowling of Callum Parkinson after attempting one big hit too many on 69.Neser and No.11 Jamie McIlroy added another 59 before a weary Leicestershire were put out of their misery just after 6.20pm.Day four is scheduled to get underway at 11am on Thursday.
