Equatoriano no ano passado.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea wanted to sign Gittens ahead of this summer's tournament in the United States, but were forced to wait before finally agreeing a deal for one of their top targets. With Jadon Sancho gone and Joao Felix expected to follow him out of the door, Enzo Maresca will be glad to have former Manchester City player Gittens secured ahead of the new season.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Having made the plunge to join Dortmund in 2020, Gittens has registered 17 goals in 107 appearances for Niko Kovac's side, including 76 Bundesliga appearances. The England youth international has yet to make his debut for the senior side, but will hope to force his way into consideration for Thomas Tuchel's 2026 World Cup squad on his arrival in West London.

WHAT NEXT FOR GITTENS AND CHELSEA?

Following his medical, Gittens will join up with his new Chelsea team-mates after their participation in the Club World Cup. The Blues face Benfica in their last 16 tie and will aim to go all the way in the tournament. Next season Maresca's side will have high hopes of competing for domestic and European honours, and Gittens could be a key part of their project moving forward.

Handscomb half-century helps Victoria beat Tasmania

Beau Webster’s brilliant all-round display of 83 and 2 for 17 not enough for Tasmania in a low-scoring affair

An aggressive Peter Handscomb half-century has helped Victoria grind to a three-wicket win against Tasmania in the first round of the Marsh Cup.Chasing 225, Handscomb top-scored with 51 from 42 balls as Victoria reached 229 for 7 with 31 balls to spare despite an outstanding all-round display Tasmania’s Beau Webster, who made 83 and took 2 for 17 to give the visitors a chance.Tasmania’s top-order batters got bogged down against a disciplined Victorian attack on a tacky early season surface – all out on the last ball of their 50 overs for 224 – at the Junction Oval in Melbourne.Handscomb, along with opener Tom Rogers, deliberately avoided the same trap in their run chase. Rogers struck five fours and a six in making 45 from 49 balls and laid a solid platform. Although he fell in the 19th over, Victoria were well-placed at 110 for 3.Handscomb’s knock featured seven fours and a six before emerging 20-year-old left-hander Campbell Kellaway played a composed hand making 46 from 71. Will Sutherland sealed victory with an unbeaten cameo of 29 runs from 20 balls, including a six to finish the match.Tasmania’s Billy Stanlake and Webster were the only multiple wicket-takers, although Riley Meredith bowled a lightning spell downwind to finish with 1 for 29 from 10 overs.Earlier, the Tigers’ top-order batters struggled against some miserly seam bowling from Scott Boland and Fergus O’Neill. Boland took 2 for 30 from his 10 overs while O’Neill took 1 for 36 including a maiden.Opener Caleb Jewell was out in the fifth over, as Boland, from around the wicket, enticed an outside edge to Sutherland who completed a sharp ankle-high catch at second slip. Two balls later, in a fresh Boland over, the paceman trapped Mac Wright lbw for a duck and Jordan Silk soon followed. Jake Weatherald, opening for the Tigers for the first time since leaving South Australia, made 28 from 61 deliveries but fell to Sam Elliott.Weatherald’s dismissal left Tasmania wobbling at 72 for four in the 23rd over. Webster answered the crisis call, hitting nine fours and a six in an impressive counter-punch despite Test offspinner Todd Murphy conceding only 32 runs from his 10 wicketless overs.Webster was supported by Matthew Wade and Mitchell Owen as he lifted the Tigers to 224, helped by a late flurry from Sam Rainbird. But they were 30 to 40 runs short in the end.

Rohit and Bumrah headline fiery India display

Rohit’s 131 took him past Sachin Tendulkar for the most hundreds at the World Cup, as India made light work of a chase of 273

Danyal Rasool11-Oct-20231:45

What makes Jasprit Bumrah effective even in tough conditions for bowlers?

India vs Afghanistan was one of the closer encounters of the 2019 World Cup, but a blistering hundred from Rohit Sharma ensured there would be no double jeopardy in 2023. Any jeopardy at all was taken out of the game in the first ten overs or so of the chase, when Rohit, who went past Sachin Tendulkar for most hundreds at the ODI World Cup, took the attack to all Afghanistan bowlers, turning a potentially tricky chase of 273 into a net run rate boosting cakewalk. A half-century from Virat Kohli capped a near-perfect day for India as they eased to an eight-wicket win with 15 overs to spare, after a disciplined performance with the ball had restricted Afghanistan to a below-par total despite half-centuries from Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai.Related

India’s top order, Rohit included, had missed out badly against Australia after the hosts fell to 2 for 3. Today, Rohit would ensure there was to be no repeat of that. A sedate first couple of overs were followed by Rohit’s first boundary, and the floodgates opened. Fazalhaq Farooqi was belted over long-off for a six followed up by a couple of fours. There was a repeat dose in his following Farooqi over, with Rohit speeding along to a lightning half-century, which he brought up with a boundary, off 27 balls. Another couple of sixes and a boundary followed, and by the end of the powerplay, India had rollicked along to 94, the highest of this tournament. With Ishan Kishan content to play a supporting role at the other end, Rohit let his languid arms loose. The spinners weren’t spared; Mujeeb-ur-Rahman leaking three boundaries in four deliveries to the opener, and before the end of the 18th over, the inevitable Rohit hundred was up. Coming in 63 balls, it was the fastest by an Indian at an ODI World Cup; that Rohit was the one that achieved that record was not in the least surprising.Rashid Khan removed Ishan Kishan at the other end, but Rohit just motored along with Kohli for a while. But Rashid, who came on to bowl later than his side perhaps needed him, finally cleaned him up with a flipper for 131, though by now India needed only to go through the motions. Kohli’s innings was little more than batting practice, and by the time he tonked the winning shot back down the ground, that net session, and India’s win, was complete.Rohit Sharma brought up his century in the 18th over of the chase•Getty ImagesAfghanistan had won the toss and elected to bat first, but spent much of the innings playing too many dot balls interspersed with the occasional boundary. Jasprit Bumrah proved hard to get away, as ever, though Mohammad Siraj came in for some tap, leaking 76 in nine overs. Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran fell cheaply, with Rahmat Shah falling to the golden arm of Shardul Thakur, leaving Afghanistan tottering at 63 for 3.Afghanistan’s best passage of play would follow. Shahidi and Omarzai compiled a 121-run partnership that rendered the spinners largely ineffective, forcing Rohit to bring the quicks back earlier than he might have wanted. Towards the back end, as both brought up half-centuries, Afghanistan were picking up boundaries at will, and appeared primed for a total in excess of 300.Once Hardik Pandya cleaned up Omarzai with an off cutter, though, things began to fall apart. Mohammad Nabi looked woefully out of touch, his knock of 19 off 27 robbing Afghanistan of momentum instead of giving it any, and the men that followed could never quite wrench control back. Shahidi plugged along, his 88-ball 80 vital in putting up a respectable score, but when he fell reverse-sweeping to Kuldeep Yadav, any hopes of 300 went up in smoke. It left Rashid, Mujeeb and Naveed to play dainty little cameos that pushed the score up to the 272 they managed, but as Rohit ensured, it was much too little in the end.

Newcastle's uphill battle! Magpies face serious challenge to convince Atalanta to part with 'unsellable' Giorgio Scalvini this summer

Newcastle United's hopes of landing Italian star Giorgio Scalvini have taken a big hit, with Atalanta firmly declaring the 21-year-old as "unsellable" this summer. Despite reports of contact from the Premier League side, no negotiations are taking place as the Serie A club shut the door on a potential exit for their star centre-back.

Newcastle have reportedly shown serious interest in signing Scalvini. However, Atalanta have made it clear they are not entertaining any offers for the highly rated defender, regardless of price. Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport states there are 'no negotiations' because Atalanta consider him untouchable.

Scalvini missed most of last season through injury, but his immense potential has not gone unnoticed by major names in the footballing world. Newcastle’s admiration for the player is long-standing, yet they may now have to reassess their defensive targets as the Italian club refuses to budge.

As per reports from Italian media, even speculative fees between €40-50 million (£34m-43m) were unlikely to sway Atalanta, who believe Scalvini can be central to their future. Newcastle’s interest in the highly rated centre-back is genuine and serious, but Atalanta didn’t even counter with a valuation.

The Magpies may now either test Atalanta’s resolve with a formal bid or shift their focus elsewhere. For now, Scalvini appears firmly off the market, and any summer move looks extremely unlikely unless circumstances change dramatically.

Josh Tongue seeks another taste of the action after summer to savour

From the verge of retirement to holding a prized central contract – it has been a whirlwind 12 months for Josh Tongue. At the back-end of 2022, following a 15-month spell on the sidelines with a shoulder issue, calling time on a promising fast-bowling career and utilising a Level 2 coaching badge was given serious consideration. Now, as one of seven England fast bowlers on multi-year deals, a level of security he admits to having “dreamt about”, his stock and confidence are as high as ever.Much has happened in a short period of time for a player who turned 26 on Wednesday. A botox injection in his neck proved a revelation when it came to calming the nerves afflicting his shoulder, allowing him to tour Sri Lanka with England Lions at the start of 2023. A red-ball debut for the representative side went well, taking 5 for 34 and 3 for 77, with managing director Rob Key – who presented his cap – impressed enough to push his case down the line.Tongue then dismissed Steve Smith in a County Championship match for Worcestershire against Sussex to provide an early-season boost to his credentials, manifesting into a Test debut against Ireland at Lord’s, which he marked with 5 for 66. A second cap would come at the same venue in the Ashes, in which he would remove Smith once more in the first innings, albeit when the Australian had 110 to his name.Tongue also underwent a change of counties, moving from New Road to Trent Bridge, though getting acquainted with his Nottinghamshire team-mates will have to wait. On Thursday, he flew to the United Arab Emirates as part of a Lions training camp aimed at gearing up for the challenge of a gruelling five-Test tour of India to come in the New Year.Even that trip to the UAE will be short and sweet; Tongue has been included in both ODI and T20i squads for the West Indies tour in December. He will travel straight to the Caribbean to join up with an England squad desperate to draw a line under their dismal 2023 World Cup campaign.Related

“The last year has been a bit of a rollercoaster,” Tongue said. “Before that, nearly retiring because of my shoulder injury and then being picked for that Lions tour of Sri Lanka, I was over the moon about that. And this summer, playing the Ireland Test and then being in the squad for the Ashes and then playing that game at Lord’s, it was a special moment – a bit surreal, I don’t think it’s sunk in yet.”I didn’t start the season well for Worcestershire (11 Division Two wickets at 41.45 in four matches leading up to his maiden Test call-up), so being selected for that Ireland Test was a bit of a surprise because there were a couple of injuries. Once I got into that environment with Baz [Brendon McCullum] and Stokesy it was such a chilled environment, and being around Jimmy (Anderson) and (Stuart) Broad was just amazing.”For obvious reasons, the Lord’s Test against Australia stands alone as a highlight. The occasion in itself would have been memorable enough, but with England 1-0 down after losing at Edgbaston and with Just Stop Oil protesters storming the pitch after the first over of the match, the events of the final day took it to another level, with Jonny Bairstow’s contentious run-out followed by Ben Stokes’ remarkable 155. Tongue took 5 for 151 in the match, and his dismissal in the second innings – losing his leg stump attempting to slog – confirmed Australia’s 43-run win to go 2-0 up.Josh Tongue celebrates his maiden Test wicket against Ireland at Lord’s•Gareth Copley/Getty Images

“A lot did happen in that match!” he reflected. “For me personally, just walking through the Long Room about to do the national anthem. I have said to all my family and friends I am never going to forget that moment, in the Long Room. It’s just electric in there. It didn’t help that the Oil protestors came on straight away – and I was just like ‘urgh, I just want to get playing now’.”Even in the Ireland Test, I think there was like 28,000 in and that is the biggest crowd I have ever played in front of and I knew when I got told I was playing in the Ashes match that this is going to be full – 35,000. Just amazing.”Even batting towards the end with Jimmy – I never thought I’d be batting with Jimmy Anderson at the other end even a couple of months before that – the crowd was amazing. I tried to have a bit of fun (Tongue struck 19 off 26), tried to move round the crease and, erm, got bowled at the end.”Following Broad’s retirement, a more permanent seam bowling spot has opened up, and Tongue’s strong first impressions in the format, consistently sending the ball down in the high eighties puts him in a good spot. It helps, too, that McCullum and Stokes have created an environment he feels brings out the best in him.”I think my pace will help in subcontinental conditions and I can get the ball to reverse as well and my bouncer tactic, which Stokes obviously likes, will benefit the team.”I know being in that Test squad, the pressure is really taken off you. Stokesy and Baz were so good in terms of telling me how to play my cricket – ‘you are here for a reason, you are good enough to be here, have fun, chill out, don’t put too much pressure on yourself’ – and obviously it is going to be a lot different over in India. I have never been to India before, it will be very exciting if I am selected.”It is pretty much guaranteed that Tongue will be in India, with the Lions also touring the country parallel to the main squad. The experience in Sri Lanka earlier this year has him in good stead when it comes to a fast bowler’s duties on the subcontinent. He will look to fine-tune those elements over the next fortnight.”I normally bowl from mid-crease, so mixing up the angles, even coming round the wicket to the right-hander, trying to reverse the ball back in. Obviously it is a bit harder getting LBs (leg before) from round the wicket, but [it’s about] making sure that length is fuller to get that. I think just being a bit unpredictable as well, batters don’t like that; just mix up angles, even cross-seamers. Just something different.”He also has limited-overs skills to hone: “Death stuff – yorkers, slower balls etc, towards the back end, I bowl in the powerplay as well and in the middle, so I am used to that. One of my main areas of getting better is the back-end of the innings.”The aim, ultimately, is to show the selectors he can be an option for all formats. Tongue’s career to date has largely been skewed towards the red ball, with 50 first-class appearances set against 15 List A and 15 T20 matches. He impressed in 2023’s Men’s Hundred, taking seven wickets at 17.85 for Manchester Originals under England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler, who will be more willing than ever for fresh blood for the next World Cup cycle, including next summer’s T20 World Cup. Tongue is likely to pick up his first white-ball cap before the year comes to an end, and there is every chance 2024 will be as memorable as 2023.”I have played a lot more red-ball than white-ball, but I do see myself as an all-three-format bowler, and I want to get better at my white-ball cricket. Hopefully, I can showcase that in the West Indies.”

IOC will decide if Afghanistan play in the Olympics – ICC CEO Allardice

ICC’s chief executive officer says “they (IOC) have been following the progress or the developments there”

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Nov-2023

Since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, there have been restrictions on women playing sport•Afghanistan Cricket Board

Afghanistan’s participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is in the hands of the International Olympics Council (IOC), not the ICC. This is the view expressed by ICC’s chief executive officer Geoff Allardice, who was responding to how cricket’s governing body will tackle the challenge of Afghanistan women players being forced into exile since Taliban assumed power in 2021.In October the IOC approved the LA28’s recommendation of adding T20 cricket as a new sport, convinced by its popularity across the Commonwealth countries as well as the younger generation, along with the potential it brings for growth in markets such as the USA.In its proposal, the ICC had recommended a six-team event for both the men’s and women’s competitions which was approved by the IOC. By 2025, the LA28 and ICC will work out a competition structure as well as the way in which teams can qualify for the event. The LA28 organisers have stressed on gender equality at the Olympics, which normally sees participation from both genders in individual and team sports. However, Afghanistan currently do not have a women’s cricket team, with 22 out of the 25 contracted players moving overseas since the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021. There remains a chance, however, that the men’s team might take part in the event in five years’ time.”(In) the Olympic competition teams are fielded by the National Olympic Committees of those countries,” Allardice told the ‘s Stumped podcast. “As an international sporting federation, we position our sport with the LA28 organisers for inclusion. And the IOC and they (LA28) have included cricket. In terms of the position of the National Olympic Committee of Afghanistan, it’s probably something for the IOC to be able to address more accurately than me. But I know that they (IOC) have been following the progress or the developments there. Our position on cricket and supporting our member in Afghanistan is not dissimilar to those of other international sporting organisations.”Related

In its communication with the Taliban government, the IOC has been emphasising that the country’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) will be in danger of suspension if access to sports for women continues to be restricted. The IOC has not cleared Afghanistan’s participation for the 2024 Paris Olympics.Addressing the IOC session in Mumbai in October, James Macleod, IOC head of Olympic Solidarity and National Olympic Committee Relations, said that there was a “tiny bit of progress” made which was evident in the Hangzhou Asian Games recently. Out of the 83 Afghan athletes, 17 were women. While it was the men who owned all five medals, the women athletes – all of whom reside overseas – competed in volleyball, athletics and cycling. They also had male and female flag bearers at the event.IOC president Thomas Bach had pointed out at the Mumbai session that the onus was on Afghanistan’s National Olympic Committee to show the progress it was making to ensure women cricketers were receiving encouragement and support to compete at all levels. “In this broader context, cricket will be considered in the end,” he saidAfghanistan men were part of the gold medal match in the Asian Games in the absence of the women’s team. Allardice, who traveled to Hangzhou, said that the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) had committed to developing women’s cricket when it was granted ICC’s Full Membership in 2017.”They were in the process of doing that through to 2021,” Allardice said. “And in 2021 the regime in the country changed and has brought in rules, laws that prohibit women from playing sport in the country. Whilst we have spoken with the Afghanistan Cricket Board and their position is that they have to operate within the laws of the country and the rules set by the government.”An ICC working group, led by its deputy chair Imran Khwaja, has been liaising with the Taliban government in the last year with the ultimate aim of helping women play cricket safely. “The question for the ICC board is do we support our member in their ability to promote cricket within the rules set by the government of the country? And view is yes,” Allardice said.As a Full Member, the ACB receives significant funding. As per the ICC’s financial distribution model for the next cycle (2024-27), the ACB will receive approximately USD 16.8 million as its share from the commercial earnings. Allardice said that the member boards had the autonomy to utilise the funds as they saw fit.”How those members distribute those funds and the use of that money is very much up to those members.
