All-round Paul Walter powers Heat to third straight win

Jake Fraser-McGurk’s maiden BBL fifty was in vain, as Renegades remained winless

Tristan Lavalette21-Dec-2023Jake Fraser-McGurk smashed his maiden BBL half-century, but Brisbane Heat overcame the onslaught with Paul Walter producing a strong all-round performance in their clinical victory over Melbourne Renegades at Marvel Stadium. After Heat elected to bowl on a slow surface, Fraser-McGurk hammered seven sixes in his 55 off 23 balls but Renegades were pegged back by English import Walter, who claimed 3 for 27 off four overs.Related

Tom Curran banned for four BBL games for intimidating umpire

Renegades’ total seemed imposing when Heat slumped to 45 for 3 before Matthew Renshaw and Sam Billings combined for a 72-run partnership. Fittingly, Walter finished the job with superb late hitting to finish with 30 off 15 balls as unbeaten Heat crossed the line with 11 balls to spare.Renegades, however, are winless and will be disappointed not to have capitalised on Fraser-McGurk’s early fireworks. The first half of Renegades’ innings was completely dominated by Fraser-McGurk, who came to the crease after opener Quinton de Kock fell in the second over to left-arm quick Spencer Johnson for a seven-ball duck.Having failed to unlock his prodigious gifts before this domestic season, Fraser-McGurk is fast becoming a drawcard having just two months ago entered the record books for the fastest ever List A century. His breakout season has also included a maiden First-Class century underlining his huge potential across formats.Fraser-McGurk had no trouble countering the sharp bounce of Johnson, who was playing his first match since being purchased by Gujarat Titans for AU$1.78million.He hammered 22 off his first six deliveries, which included three sixes in a clean-striking aerial assault. While Renegades’ top-order struggled for fluency on a sluggish surface, Fraser-McGurk appeared to be batting on a different pitch and he handled seamer Michael Neser with disdain by sweeping him for six.Heat stand-in captain Colin Munro turned to left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann who was smoked second ball for six over midwicket by Fraser-McGurk. No bowler was spared from the carnage with legspinner Mitchell Swepson pummelled over deep midwicket as Fraser-McGurk reached his half-century off just 21 balls. His whirlwind knock was being lapped up by not only the Renegades faithful, but Australia’s World Cup hero Glenn Maxwell who gushed about Fraser-McGurk on social media. But Fraser-McGurk holed out before drinks off Walter’s first delivery and Renegades predictably slowed considerably. Walter, who was a surprise selection by Heat in the BBL draft, continued his strong start to the season by bowling clever slow shorter deliveries that proved hard to score off.He also claimed the pivotal wickets of veteran Aaron Finch and Will Sutherland, who is key at the death for Renegades, as Heat recovered well from Fraser-McGurk’s hot start.Bu Heat couldn’t quite finish the job with Jono Wells enjoying a late flurry, including a last-ball boundary off Johnson who finished with 1 for 39 off four overs.Heat got off to a fast start in their chase through openers Josh Brown and Munro, who smashed seamer Tom Rogers for a first-ball six to cap a 15-run opening over. But Afghanistan offspinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman came into the attack in the second over in an inspired move. Munro tried to counter by moving his stance well across the stumps but it backfired and he was dismissed lbw after Mujeeb successfully reviewed.Brown holed out to quick Kane Richardson’s first delivery and Heat were in trouble when Nathan McSweeney spooned a return catch to Mujeeb.Batting appeared tough as Heat’s run rate creeped up, but Renshaw made his move in the eighth over with consecutive boundaries off spinner Nic Maddinson.Renshaw found good rhythm with Billings as the pair played smartly by nudging the ball around in a constant rotation of the strike. Occasionally they would go for broke like when Billings whacked Sutherland for a huge six in the 12th over to bring up the half-century partnership.Heat appeared to be cruising until Maddinson desperately turned to legspinner Adam Zampa, who gave Renegades hope by dismissing Billings for 40 in the 14th over. But Heat timed the power surge perfectly with Walter pummelling Richardson for 20 runs in a game-changing 17th over.Walter’s purple patch continued with a stunning straight six off Zampa as Heat soon clinched their third straight victory to start the season.

Phillips: 'As a batter, I'd look to target myself as well'

Mahmudul Hasan Joy admits Bangladesh got out to “bad shots” trying to hit out against Phillips

Glenn Phillips knew that the opposition batters would get stuck into him for relief. He is the fifth bowler of a strong New Zealand attack. He was also bowling for the first time in a Test. Phillips the batter would have certainly tried to hit Phillips the bowler out of the park. It was this element of Bangladesh’s mindset, combined with a few other factors, that gave him his first four wickets in Test cricket. Phillips was the best bowler of the day, something that he perhaps didn’t envisage when he went out in the morning in Sylhet. His reaction to his first wicket said as much, too. Najmul Hossain Shanto, Bangladesh’s captain in this series and their in-form Test batter, had already taken Ajaz Patel, New Zealand’s spin mainstay, apart. One shot too many, however, brought Shanto back to earth. He mistimed a Phillips full-toss to mid-on, where Kane Williamson pouched a difficult skier.Related

Phillips’ facial expression was priceless. He hung his head before a big smile emerged as he celebrated his first Test wicket. He later said, in jest, that he would trade his second wicket (Mominul Haque, caught behind) as his first Test wicket.”I have dreamed of getting my first Test wicket for a long time, but that was not how I thought I would get it,” Phillips said with a round of laughter following in the press conference room. “You see legspinners often bowl absolute peaches and then a nice juicy full-toss. The batter’s eyes light up, and it goes straight up. I have always wanted a little piece of that, but I didn’t want it for my first Test wicket. Maybe we can replace it with the second wicket. Look, I have got out to full-tosses. Every batter gets out to full-tosses. I just got a little bit lucky.”Phillips said that his lack of notoriety as a bowler, coupled with Bangladesh’s aggressive approach, helped him get the four wickets. Soon after he got to the crease, Mominul was heard in the stump microphone telling Mahmudul Hasan Joy to hit Phillips out of the attack.”They came hard at us early on. They put Ajaz [Patel] under a lot of pressure. I think it did present the opportunities to take wickets throughout but as we have seen in the subcontinent pitches, you have to be aggressive to put bowlers off their line and length. The Bangladesh boys did that well today but it presented a few wicket-taking opportunities.”Obviously with someone new that the guys haven’t faced before, there’s always that element of unknown. Obviously being the fifth bowler, as a batter, I’d look to target myself as well. I think maybe the combination of those two things presented the opportunity to take a few wickets, which was really nice.”I tried to stick to the process. Pass the baton on to the other boys. Try to build dots, build pressure. Jazzy bowled unbelievably well. Our seamers bowled incredibly well. Ish [Sodhi] bowled that absolute speccy of a delivery. The pressure was built by everyone all round. I just received the reward,” he said.Mahmudul, who top scored for Bangladesh with 86 runs, said that they played some bad shots against Phillips.”He is an occasional bowler so if we didn’t charge him, the main bowlers would have kept us in check,” he said. “We wanted to attack the occasional bowler. Unfortunately we got out to bad shots against him.”This is how Shanto bats. He wanted to play his natural game. Not all batters get the chance to get set. It is always frustrating to get out in the thirties or forties. People get out. It was a full toss. It doesn’t happen all the time. I was a bit surprised too as Shanto was playing really well.”Phillips was bowling in Tests for the first time, playing in his second Test. He said that his bowling has given him the competitive advantage in a tough field for aspiring batters in the New Zealand Test side.Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Mominul Haque put on 88 off 171 balls for the third wicket•AFP/Getty Images

“I have been trying to lose the wicketkeeper-batter tag for a long time now. Hopefully this (four-wicket haul) puts a little stamp on things. I worked really hard over it for quite a number of years now with this goal in mind.”I also felt that I needed to offer something with the ball in order to play Test cricket. Our batting line-up is incredibly strong. Key to getting this opportunity was to play the allrounder’s role.”Phillips said that his captain Tim Southee mixed the bowlers’ spells effectively, particularly keeping in mind the type of bowlers he had and their respective confidence levels.”I think it is a mixture of understanding that there’s five days of cricket to go with only two seamers. Using them in short bursts and understanding that Ajaz will probably bowl a lot of overs to hold an end for a while. Ish is our impact bowler.”I think to be able to have a ball turning in, mixing myself with Jazzy, is probably an ideal scenario. Having lefties in the top-order allowed Ajaz to have a bit of break. But also I think credit to Timmy for understanding what we as spinners need from a confidence perspective.”For example, before he took that wicket, Ish didn’t start off the way he would have liked. He felt a bit more relaxed a few overs into it. Starts ripping it really hard, and then obviously the reward comes. The way he holds himself and talks to us as bowlers, is really encouraging. We back his decision-making all the way.”Bangladesh, meanwhile, will rue throwing away their wickets after most of the batters got starts. Mahmudul felt that the hosts are still on top given the type of pitch in Sylhet, but admitted that their 310 for 9 at stumps is well short of their planned score.”We wanted to score 350 to 380 runs. It didn’t happen. We will try to stop them with their quality spinners. If they bowl well, we can bowl them out for a low total. The pitch isn’t as easy as it looks. The ball turns often. It is not every day that a batter will score runs,” he said.Asked why Shanto and Nurul Hasan were in ultra-attacking mode from the start, Mahmudul said that they stuck to their game plans while he grafted along for 166 balls.”It is easy if you trust your defense. Everyone has a different game plan. Shanto , myself and (Nurul Hasan) Sohan played our natural games. You can last long in any wicket if you trust your defensive technique,” he said.Unfortunately for Bangladesh, it also meant that they couldn’t control their aggressive intent, succumbing to Philips’ highly underrated offspin. Their target to “hit him out of the attack” didn’t go to plan. As Mahmudul said, they are now pinning their hopes on their spinners to do the job.

Brendon McCullum calls for county chances for Bashir, Hartley after India Test impact

England head coach Brendon McCullum says it would be “slightly mad” if Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir are unable to build on a breakthrough tour of India in county cricket, and has suggested clubs should produce pitches to assist in the development of spinners across the country.Hartley and Bashir have been two plus points in a series in which England competed well but still lost after India took an unassailable 3-1 lead on Monday, with victory in the fourth Test at Ranchi. Having arrived with minimal first-class experience, the left-arm spinner and off-spinner respectively have acquitted themselves brilliantly throughout, against opposition batters proficient at playing the turning ball.Hartley has played all four Tests and is currently the leading wicket-taker in the series (20), having taken just 19 in the entirety of Lancashire’s Division One campaign last summer. Bashir, who only made his first-class debut in 2023 and arrived with 10 dismissals at an average of 67 for Somerset, has more than doubled his red-ball tally with 12 Test wickets. Both picked up five-wicket hauls on this trip.Related

  • Stats: India extend their series winning record at home

Their selections were made to meet England’s specific requirements for success in India: tall spinners driving the ball into the pitch, aping the likes of R Ashwin and Axar Patel, who have had so much success in home conditions. After impressing with the Lions under men’s performance director Mo Bobat – who left the ECB last week to take up a post at Royal Challengers Bangalore – Hartley and Bashir were essentially fast-tracked into the England set-up, where they have since thrived. The concern, however, is the pair may be stunted by a lack of playing time when they return to their counties, which England want to avoid given they are building towards a tour of Pakistan in October.Lancashire, for instance, have signed Nathan Lyon for the season, the Australian veteran spinner who claimed his 500th Test wicket at Perth in December. Speaking after bowling England to victory in the first Test with 7 for 62, Hartley reflected it would be “fantastic” if they were able to play together but acknowledged Lyon would be the main man in the XI.Bashir, meanwhile, has England team-mate Jack Leach to contend with at Somerset. Leach, who is having surgery on Thursday to ease the swelling in the damaged left knee that ruled him out of the India series after just one Test, will need Championship games to work himself back to full fitness for the home series against West Indies and Sri Lanka. Though Taunton pitches occasionally favour a multi-spinner approach, Bashir was the only one in the XI for his three appearances at home last summer. Leach presented Bashir with his maiden cap for the second Test in Visakhapatnam.Bashir’s eight wickets in Ranchi gave England hope of squaring the series•AFP via Getty Images

“It will be a slight frustration of ours if they weren’t given opportunities at county level,” McCullum said. “There’s a very real possibility that might be the case, but without wanting to dictate to counties because they have their own agendas as well, when you see performances like we have out of those two bowlers throughout the series, I think you’d be slightly mad if you didn’t give them more opportunities in county cricket.”It would be nice to think they’d get plenty of opportunities so that they can improve at a quicker rate. Whether those opportunities are with counties or with England, I think we’ve just got to keep trying to get cricket into them. Whatever opportunity we can, we’ll try and give it to them because there’s two guys there more than good enough for international cricket. They’re also tough characters.”What you can’t tell from the outside of a man’s body is the size of their heart – and we’ve seen both of them have big hearts and they’re up for international cricket. It doesn’t get any harder than it is right now, and they’ve both stood up and performed, so we’ve just to keep giving both of them chances.”It was a sentiment echoed by the captain Ben Stokes in the immediate aftermath of England’s five-wicket defeat in the fourth Test, but acknowledged it was “very tough” to force counties to adhere to specific needs. McCullum suggested a workaround of sorts could be if teams produced surfaces that encourage turn more, a move that he believes would enhance the craft and provide more entertainment.Hartley’s seven-wicket haul in Hyderabad secured a famous England win•BCCI

“As much as England’s about playing on good wickets and having the ball move off the seam, it should also be about playing on spinning wickets too,” he said. “If we lived in a world where we could have both Bash and Leachy able to operate in spinning conditions at Somerset, and Hartley and Lyon could bowl together at Lancashire, I think that would be a great viewing point for spectators.”Hartley and Bashir are the latest examples of an England set-up not beholden to domestic form and numbers. Zak Crawley, for instance, was selected initially in 2019, despite scoring just three first-class centuries in 36 matches for Kent, before McCullum and Stokes backed him during a tough start under their tenure. Having top-scored in the Ashes, he is now leading England’s run charts in India with 328 at an average of 41.Despite looking beyond the numbers, McCullum insisted England’s selection policies are not dismissive of county form. Indeed the scale and variety within English cricket has allowed them to be more precise with their picks.”We certainly don’t pick in spite of county cricket, if that’s what you mean. We look at what we need skill-wise and we try and adjust it to what we think we’re going to require, and be brave enough to make decisions around it. We’re not going to get every decision right.”From our point of view there’s a big team out looking around county cricket, and the guys who we think play in the way we want to play as a cricket team, and who fit the environment as well. And there’s a lot of eyes on those guys throughout. So it’s not certainly in spite of it. County cricket is a good system, it’s got a lot of cricketers opportunities, it’s got a volume of cricket as well and different conditions.”Some guys who have got great county numbers might not find themselves necessarily in the England team. And some guys who don’t will find themselves in, but that’s not a reflection of that [county cricket]. It’s just about the skill set we want.”

'A fascinating case study' – USMNT icon Alexi Lalas describes Club World Cup as ‘imperfect’ success despite challenges

The Fox Sports analyst has offered a balanced assessment of the expanded Club World Cup, acknowledging its flaws while declaring the competition a success

Lalas termed the tournament an "imperfect work in progress"FOX analyst believes FIFA would acknowledge organizational shortcomingsMedia attention and successful adjustments highlighted as proof of conceptGetty Images SportWHAT HAPPENED?

U.S. international Alexi Lalas provided his evaluation of the expanded 32-team FIFA Club World Cup tournament, which has faced significant criticism for issues including playing conditions, scheduling, and venue preparations. The month-long tournament recently ended with Chelsea beating French side Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final, but it had its fair share of issues over the course of the month. Lalas characterised the competition as an "imperfect work in progress" but argued that its ability to attract global attention and adapt to challenges demonstrated its fundamental viability as a concept.

“I think this is talk about a case study and a fascinating case study,” Lalas said on his podcast. “I think that the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup this summer was absolutely kind of an imperfect work in progress. And I think that FIFA and Gianni Infantino would admit that. But I think it's also hard to call it anything else but a success.

“When you expand to 32 teams, you move it to summer. All of the media attention, both good and bad, but the attention that it garnered, the massive prize money for the teams, and not for nothing, but according to FIFA, $2 billion in revenue. And I think it's important for some perspectives, this bears very little resemblance to previous Club World Cups, regardless of what you called them."

Lalas added that he believes this tournament is the way going forward in the future and not reverting back to the original format that was used in the past.

“I think this is certainly the way to the future,” Lalas added. “This is where the work in progress and imperfect situation come. You know, the complaining about the weather and the heat and the delayed games, who knows, maybe that informs what happens next summer. And they've already talked about the scheduling of the timing of games in order to mitigate some of that heat, the indoor games that are going to happen. And maybe, you know, focusing on that and trying to again mitigate some of the weather circumstances that are going on in the final in and of itself. "

The tournament has revealed both the potential and pitfalls of FIFA's ambitious expansion strategy for club competitions. Despite numerous operational challenges including extreme heat, questionable playing surfaces, and weather disruptions, the competition has generated substantial media coverage and fan interest. FIFA has already, reportedly, taken that into consideration ahead of the 2026 World Cup that will be held next summer across North America.
