This summer is shaping up to be something really quite special for Arsenal.

Following the underwhelming business conducted by his predecessor last year, Sporting Director Andrea Berta is wasting no time at all in his bid to turn Mikel Arteta’s side from serial runners-up to Premier League champions next season.

The Italian has already clinched the signings of Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Christian Norgaard, while Noni Madueke is set for a medical at London Colney this afternoon.

Yet, in perhaps the most exciting development of all, the club now appear to have secured the services of Viktor Gyokeres, and if reports are to be believed, they’re also targeting a winger who he’ll love.

However, when the window reopened this summer, it looked like Benjamin Sesko was going to be the Gunners’ new number nine, although once RB Leipzig demanded £85m, attention swiftly turned back to the Swede.

After a week or so of further talks, and a strike from the player himself, The Athletic’s David Ornstein confirmed that an agreement in principle has been reached with Sporting CP that will see them paid an initial fee of £55m, with £9m of performance-related add-ons.

It could be the signing that will help revolutionise the team’s frontline, and as if that wasn’t enough, the Gunners are now being linked with someone Gyokeres would love to play alongside.

At least that is according to a recent report from journalist Graeme Bailey, who has revealed that Arsenal are one of the teams interested in Kaoru Mitoma.

Alongside the Gunners, the report claims that Chelsea and Bayern Munich are keen on the Brighton & Hove Albion star, who now has just under two years remaining on his £80k-per-week contract.

A potential price is not mentioned in the report, but according to stories from earlier this summer, the Seagulls could demand a fee of up to £80m.

It could be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, but Mitoma has the ability to make a significant impact at Arsenal, and he could be a dream teammate for Gyokeres.

Why Gyokeres would love Mitoma

So, to assess the sorts of players that Gyokeres would love playing alongside, it’s important to look at his playstyle.

We know the Sporting star is a lean, mean goalscoring machine, but when we take a look at his league heatmap this season, we can see that he is very much a number nine who likes to spend most of his time in the penalty area.

We can see this even more clearly when looking at where he took his shots in the Champions League last season, as 19 of 24 were from inside the penalty area.

Therefore, be it through passing or dribbling, the former Coventry City man is going to love playing with attackers who can get the ball to him in these dangerous areas, and as many will be aware, Mitoma is a real threat with the ball at his feet.

The Japanese international famously wrote a university dissertation on dribbling, and it looks like it paid off, as, according to FBref, he was in the top 8% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the Premier League for carries into the final third last season and the top 10% for progressive carrying distance, per 90.

However, the Seagulls ace is not just a carrying machine; he’s more than capable of chipping in with goals and assists.

In fact, in 36 league appearances last season, the “insane” talent, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, found the back of the net on ten occasions and provided four assists for good measure.

In other words, the 28-year-old, who “finishes like Thierry Henry,” according to former teammate Christian Burgess, maintained an average of a goal involvement every 2.57 games.

Just imagine what his assist tally could look like playing with a striker who scored 54 goals in 52 games last season.

Moreover, as the Swedish international is such a goal threat and someone who loves to spend time in and around the penalty area, that could allow the Japanese international more space to whip in those Henry-esque curling shots from the left.

Ultimately, while he won’t be cheap, Mitoma is just the sort of winger who could facilitate Gyokeres’ game, while also thriving off of it.

Chairman Daniel Levy was ready to trigger Gibbs-White’s ‘confidential’ £60 million release clause before Forest stepped in, and they’re not looking for a ‘quick resolution’.

As you can see in the table above, Son has consistently delivered in front of goal for the majority of his career in England, but his powers are waning and now may be the right time to move on from him.

The South Korea international may not be able to get back to scoring 20 or more goals a season at the age of 34, given his decline last season, which is why the club should consider accepting the £15m offer from LAFC this summer.

Whilst it would be sad to see Son move on from Tottenham after ten years of service, his exit would create room for new heroes to emerge, and one of those new heroes could be a controversial figure.

This shows that Jesus, who was once hailed as “exceptional” by Pep Guardiola, is a consistent and clinical goalscorer when fit and available, which is why signing him could be a worthwhile gamble for Spurs this summer or in January.

There may be a fair bit of opposition to this, due to the Arsenal part of it, but purely based on Jesus and his quality as a player, it could be a good move for Spurs as Frank’s next version of Son.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that the club will bring in another central defender before the transfer window slams shut at the start of September.

The Hoops swooped to sign Hayato Inamura on a permanent deal earlier this month, but the Japanese defender is one for the future and another option in that area of the pitch is expected.

Rodgers already has Auston Trusty, Liam Scales, Dane Murray, Stephen Welsh, and Cameron Carter-Vickers in the centre-back positions, on top of the signing of Inamura, and they are looking for another.

CelticWay have reported that the club are weighing up a possible move to sign Dutch central defender Justin De Haas from Famalicão to add to their ranks.

The 25-year-old, left-footed, titan is valued at £3m by the Portuguese outfit, and could come in to compete for a place at the heart of the Hoops defence.

The potential signing of the Famalicão titan is an interesting one for the Scottish giants, because it would leave Rodgers with three left-footed centre-back options, in him, Scales, and Trusty.

Last season, the manager said that he prefers to play centre-backs on the side of their stronger foot because it “allows you to get through the pitch quicker and have more speed playing forward”, which suggests that De Haas will be competing with Trusty and Scales.

Based on their respective performances at league level in the 2024/25 campaign, De Haas’ biggest hurdle to making the starting XI could be the Ireland international.

Trusty joined from Sheffield United last summer and endured a difficult campaign in Scotland, as he ended the season as a back-up option behind Scales, and the Dutch star could come in as an upgrade on him.

This suggests that he could be a starting-calibre left-sided centre-back option for Celtic if he can translate his form over to the Scottish Premiership, but there is also the possibility that he is a second-choice to Scales, with Trusty demoted to a reserve.

This latest report from the Daily Record states that the Scottish Premiership champions are locked in talks with Royal Antwerp over a deal for Belgian winger Michel-Ange Balikwisha.

The outlet states that Royal Antwerp value the forward at a fee of around £5m, but they may lower it in order to push a transfer through in the coming weeks.

Tottenham Hotspur are now “seriously” keen on signing an “unstoppable” attacking midfielder as an “alternative” to RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons, journalist Sebastien Vidal has revealed.

Spurs step up pursuit of new attacking midfielder

Tottenham will be disappointed not to have a deal for an attacking midfielder wrapped up by now, having triggered the £60m release clause in Morgan Gibbs-White’s Nottingham Forest contract, although there is a still a strong chance he ends up at N17.

That is according to Football Insider’s transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke, who said: “He was due to take a medical last week, and then Forest obviously put these hurdles up.

“Gibbs-White has had to go back to Forest to continue pre-season training this week as well, when he thought in his head he was going to be a Spurs player.

“The player has his heart set on a move to Spurs, and we expect that will happen once an agreement is made between Forest and Tottenham.”

However, the Forest star is not the only option on the shortlist, with it recently being revealed that RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons has “begun talks” to join Spurs, although there could be fierce competition for his signature, with Chelsea and Arsenal also keen.

The Lilywhites’ London rivals have also entered negotiations with Simons’ representatives, meaning it could be difficult to get a deal for the Dutchman over the line, and a perhaps more attainable target from the Premier League is also being considered.

That is according to Vidal on X, who states Tottenham are “seriously eyeing Jacob Ramsey as a potential alternative to Xavi Simons”.

Ramsey is viewed as a “dynamic” and “creative” midfielder, and Spurs are “very keen” on securing his signature, but a deal is likely to be on the expensive side, given that the Aston Villa man is valued at £50m by his current employers.

There are some signs the Villa attacker could be a solid alternative option to Simons, with Jamie Carragher singling him out for praise last season, saying: “He is a machine this fella. You see him open up his legs and run. He almost looks unstoppable.”

The 24-year-old also caught the eye in the Champions League, proving to be a constant threat in his side’s 3-0 victory against Young Boys.

That said, the Birmingham-born ace wasn’t exactly prolific in the Premier League, with Simons and Gibbs-White getting on the scoresheet much more regularly in the 2024-25 campaign.
