Thomas Frank has done a lot of tinkering since taking the helm at Tottenham Hotspur, and recent form seems to be swinging in the direction of progress, following recent wins over Brentford in the Premier League and Slavia Prague in the Champions League.

It wouldn’t be wasted energy to pause and consider Tottenham’s shift from Ange Postecoglou’s high energy, attacking play toward Frank’s more pragmatic tactical take.

Pragmaticism is not necessarily a bad thing. Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti are two notable modern adherents of the style, after all. But there’s no denying that Frank’s Spurs could do with a bit more flair in the final third, pumping creativity through the forwards while maintaining the stable, structured roots.

How to achieve this? Well, ENIC Group seem to think Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo might hold the key.

Why Spurs want to sign Antoine Semenyo

Semenyo has scored six goals and supplied three assists in the Premier League this season. Only three players have notched more goal involvements: Erling Haaland (15), Igor Thiago (11), Bruno Fernandes (10).

The 25-year-old’s £65m release clause becomes active in January, and there’s set to be a swarm of interest in his signature, Tottenham getting ready to launch a bid, joined by Liverpool and Manchester City.

Semenyo has only gone from strength to strength under Andoni Iraola’s wing, now considered one of the best in the Premier League business.

In fact, pundit Chris Waddle believes he is “the best winger in the country”.

Tottenham would strike the golden jackpot by landing his signature, and to help them on the way to making it happen this January, ENIC may want to cash in on some deadwood.

Spurs could fund Semenyo move by selling "liability"

Tottenham have not quite clicked under Frank’s stewardship, but they are getting there, with the likes of Xavi Simons playing themselves into form recently and emphasising the green shoots.

However, not everyone has been a winner since the Danish tactician’s appointment, with Yves Bissouma having been excluded from Frank’s matchday squads all season. The 29-year-old’s last appearance came in May, on the final day of the Premier League season against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Bissouma has not played under Frank, dropped at the early stage of the new manager’s tenure after turning up late several times for training.

Given the recent allegations that the tough-tackling midfielder has been filmed inhaling nitrous oxide, Tottenham have had enough, and want to cut ties after more than three seasons.

However, the Mali international has a clause in his contract which could extend it next year, thus allowing the Lilywhites more bargaining power when offloading him.

Bissouma has long been regarded as one of the most talented midfielders in the Premier League, however this has not been channelled through application with enough regularity.

As per FBref, he ranked among the top 14% of Premier League midfielders for pass completion, the top 13% for tackles won and the top 10% for clearances per 90.

Tottenham are developing, though, and while Frank’s midfield unit have left something to be desired this season, it’s clear that Bissouma is not the progressive solution, branded as “a liability” by football writer Andrew Gaffney, during Postecoglou’s first season in charge.

It may not be a big payment, but Spurs would drain £55k from their weekly wage bill by selling the Malian, who is offering nothing this season. Such funds and space could be redirected toward someone like Semenyo, who would make a difference.

“On wickets like this, you never think you’ve got enough, so if you find yourself in a position where you’re the guy who’s managed to get in, try and give yourself the best chance of going on. There was a lot of assistance there when the bowlers put the ball in the right areas. Arne Slot has been handed another blow as one of his key Liverpool players is set to serve a one-match ban after picking up a booking in the 3-3 draw at Leeds United. The Reds looked set to claim an important three points at Elland Road but Ao Tanaka's stoppage-time equaliser scuppered those hopes. Now, the Merseyside outfit will not be able to call on one of their defenders for the Premier League trip to Brighton next weekend.

  Liverpool frustrated again

  Liverpool threw away a two-goal cushion and then conceded a 96th-minute equaliser on Saturday night as their difficult season continued. The Reds could have been in the top four if they had won the game but instead they are down in eighth and trouble is brewing at the club. In addition to having wing-back Jeremie Frimpong and centre-back Giovanni Leoni out injured, right-back Conor Bradley picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in the draw at Leeds. That means he will serve a one-match ban, ruling him out of the trip to Brighton. The 22-year-old will, however, be available to face Inter Milan on Tuesday in the Champions League. In the meantime, the Reds may continue to deploy Joe Gomez at right-back, while midfielders Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai can also play there if required.

• Slot bemoans dropped points

  Before the game, pressure was on Slot to turn Liverpool's poor form around. And just when it looked like they were turning the corner against Leeds, Daniel Farke's side roared back to claim a point. After the match, the Dutchman could not quite believe what he had witnessed. 

  He told BBC Match of the Day: "There's a sense of disbelief. I think we played quite well or very well during large parts of the game and we went 2-0 up. I don't think we had any problems and I don't think we conceded a chance until the moment we made a foul, which is not even a chance. It's then 2-1 and not many moments later they made it 2-2 with the first chance they had. Then we go up and you think you've done enough to win the game, but then a set piece leads to the 3-3."

  The former Feyenoord boss also pointed out that they were once again found out defensively from a set piece for Tanaka's goal. 

  "It's not about me. It's about us, it's about the fans. The players have worked so hard and to concede from a set-piece again – the 10th or 11th this season. If you concede so many like this, you cannot be higher up the table than we are," he added. "To go away with a 3-3, I don't think that's what we deserved. We conceded without the other team even having a chance. It's so difficult to play a game of football if you don't even concede a chance and it goes in. We can only look at ourselves because we are the ones that are doing it. That's the situation we are in."

  Salah adds to Liverpool's troubles

  Shortly after the Leeds game, Mohamed Salah put the cat amongst the pigeons when he accused Liverpool of "throwing him under the bus" and that he no longer had a relationship with Slot. The 33-year-old, who has been an unused substitute in two of the Reds' last three games, suggested it was wrong that he was not playing after earning his right with his past displays and that the current situation was unacceptable.

  He told reporters, "I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame. I said many times before that I had a good relationship with the manager, and all of a sudden we don't have any relationship. I don't know why but it seems to me, how I see it, that someone doesn't want me in the club. It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. That is how I am feeling. I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame. This club, I will always support it. My kids will always support it. I love the club so much and I always will. It [the situation] is not acceptable to me, to be fair. I don't get it. It's like I'm being thrown more under the bus. I don't think I'm the problem. I have done so much for this club. I don't have to go every day fighting for my position because I earned it. I am not bigger than anyone but I earned my position."

• Crunch period for Liverpool

  So much is at stake for Liverpool right now. Slot's position as manager could be hanging in the balance, Salah has dropped a huge bombshell on the club and they face some tough games in the Champions League and Premier League in the coming week. If results don't improve, the Reds may be looking for a new coach.

Brenden Aaronson is fighting for minutes at Leeds, Johnny Cardoso needs fitness at Atlético, and both Weston McKennie and Haji Wright have chances to make statements in key matches across Europe.

Phew. That was a collective sigh of relief from U.S. men’s national team fans – and likely from the players and Mauricio Pochettino – after landing a favorable World Cup draw on Friday. There will be months to dive into that, just under seven to be exact, but the focus now swings back to club action, where plenty is at stake for U.S. internationals both domestically and abroad this weekend.

Stateside, MLS Cup features three U.S. internationals – Sebastian Berhalter, Tristan Blackmon and Brian White – all hoping to win a first title for the Vancouver Whitecaps against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in Florida. Across the Atlantic, there are several significant fixtures to follow. Brenden Aaronson’s Leeds were all but ready to sack Daniel Farke after a poor run of results, but a shock win over Chelsea has bought time – even if Aaronson was a healthy scratch, raising fresh questions over his fit.

Then there’s Johnny Cardoso, who arguably made the biggest move of any USMNT player this year by joining Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid. The midfielder has struggled to carve out a role, but earned a massive start against Barcelona before suffering an injury that could sideline him again. And in Italy, Weston McKennie’s Juventus meet Napoli in a match that may already shape their season.

For months, it all appeared to make sense. Even without goals, Aaronson was an important part of Leeds’ surprising start. In September, the Whites were 12th -comfortably above the relegation zone – and the American was playing his part. Despite pushing back on the idea that he was merely a runner, his relentless pressing and willingness to cover both flanks proved invaluable during that stretch. A converted central midfielder, he was using his pace and work rate to make a difference.

Since then, though, Leeds have won just once across October and November, with their only three points coming against lowly West Ham. Daniel Farke — who was the oddsmakers’ favorite to be sacked – defended Aaronson through that run despite growing fan criticism. Yet in midweek, Leeds stunned the Premier League by beating Chelsea 3-1. And they did it without their American right winger playing a single minute.

One result is too small a sample to draw big conclusions, but managers don’t tend to stray from winning formulas. With struggling Liverpool up next, is Aaronson now on the outside looking in?

There are plenty of opinions about whether USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino truly rates Weston McKennie, but the reality is this: he remains a key part of Juventus’ squad. He can play across multiple positions, both in attack and in defense, and is approaching 150 league appearances for the historic Italian club – with 12 already this season. A decade ago, that level of influence at Juventus would have been almost inconceivable for an American.

Yet uncertainty lingers over his long-term future. McKennie’s contract expires this summer, and there are larger concerns around Juventus as a whole. After flirting with a top-three spot early on, the club has slipped to seventh, a slide that cost Igor Tudor his job.

Well-regarded Italian manager Luciano Spalletti has come in, but results haven’t changed dramatically: two wins and two draws in his first four league matches. Saturday’s game against defending champions Napoli offers an opportunity to reset the season – if Juve can claim three points.

Napoli aren’t as dominant as they were last year under Antonio Conte, but they are still level on points with Christian Pulisic’s league-leading AC Milan. A win would bring McKennie and Juventus within two points of the Gli Azzurri. McKennie has yet to record a goal contribution against Napoli, but his record is perfectly even: 3-3-3.

All of it points to a must-watch match for Serie A fans.

Cardoso looked like the perfect fit for Atlético Madrid from the moment he was linked. Skillful but rugged, he seemed almost engineered for Diego Simeone’s system.

But circumstances – injuries and uneven form – have delayed his impact.

The defensive midfielder has spent recent weeks on the bench and was finally handed a big opportunity against Barcelona midweek. It didn’t last long. Cardoso came off injured after just 12 minutes in a 3-1 defeat, and reportedly did not train ahead of Saturday’s match against Athletic.

That raises a broader concern in a World Cup year. Cardoso’s talent is obvious, but he still hasn’t carved out a consistent role at the international level. In his absence, others such as Cristian Roldan have taken their chances. Availability is a skill, too, and without a sustained run of minutes, Cardoso could be a high-profile player watching from the outside.

If he is available, Saturday offers a chance to get back on track. Athletic aren’t Barcelona. They’re middle of the pack defensively, conceding 20 goals in 15 games, and near the bottom in scoring with just 14. These are exactly the types of matches that can help him rebuild rhythm and confidence.

Hopefully, he sees the field – and makes the most of it.

Haji Wright was arguably the Championship’s best striker through the first three months of the season, but he has gone quiet since the start of November. Fortunately for both him and Frank Lampard, Coventry haven’t slowed. They remain the surprise runaway promotion contender, even as Wright has been blanked in recent weeks after scoring nine goals during that early stretch.

Saturday’s matchup with Ipswich offers a chance to get back on track. Ipswich are middling on both ends – 30 goals scored and 19 conceded – respectable numbers, but nowhere near Coventry’s output. The Sky Blues have already hit 50 goals in just 18 matches. The next closest team is ninth-placed Hull on 31.

With Coventry playing so open and aggressively on the front foot, this is the type of match where Wright could rediscover his rhythm and make an impact again.

New team, new number.

Rafael Devers will make his debut for the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday sporting a new jersey number—No. 16. Devers wore a No. 11 jersey throughout his time with the Boston Red Sox, up until they surprisingly traded him to the Giants on Sunday.

The number change comes because the Giants previously retired the No. 11 jersey in honor of Hall of Famer pitcher Cal Hubbell, who played for the Giants over his entire career from 1928 to '43.

With No. 11 not an option, Devers explained why he chose No. 16 as his new jersey number for San Francisco.

"I used the number in the minor leagues and I did really well with it," Devers told reporters during his introductory press conference, prompting a laugh from the press room.

In addition to a new number, Devers could soon see time at a new position on the Giants. The Giants plan to try Devers out at first base, and he will take grounders at first this week. While Devers refused to play first for the Red Sox, he is open to playing the position for the Giants. He said Tuesday, "I am here to play wherever they want me to play."

For now though, Devers will make his Giants debut Tuesday night as the team's designated hitter against the Cleveland Guardians, the position he has played all season thus far.

Alex Bregman returned to Houston with a boom.

The longtime Astros third baseman is back in his old home on Monday night with his new team. Now with the Red Sox, he is in Houston for the first time as a visiting player. He made the most of his return.

Fans at Daikin Park gave Bregman a nice ovation before his first at-bat, before he took a 1–1 sweeper from Cristian Javier and deposited it in the left field seats for a two-run home run. That gave Boston a 2–0 lead early.

The three-time All-Star signed a three-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox this offseason, and the investment has paid off for Boston. In 73 games this season, Bregman is slashing .301/.382/.543 with 15 home runs and 48 RBIs. His .925 OPS is the highest he has posted since 2019.

The 31-year-old can opt out of his contract after the 2025 season, and if he keeps playing like this, he may hit the open market again this winter.
