Yankees' Aaron Judge Uncertain Whether Elbow Injury Will Require Offseason Surgery

Yankees star Aaron Judge said he's unsure whether he'll require surgery on his right elbow this offseason while speaking to reporters following New York's season-ending loss to the Blue Jays in Game 4 of the American League Division Series on Wednesday night.

"We'll do some work on it [the elbow]," Judge said. "We'll do some work on it and get it right."

When asked whether he'll have surgery, Judge replied, "I'm not a doctor, I don't know."

When did Judge suffer the elbow injury?

During the seventh inning of a July 22 win over the Blue Jays, Judge grimaced in pain after throwing the ball into the infield following a running catch. He was in the Yankees lineup as the designated hitter the following day, then experienced discomfort while playing the outfield in a July 25 loss to the Phillies. He underwent tests on the elbow, which revealed no damage to the ulnar collateral ligament, but Judge on July 26 was placed on the 10-day injured list with a flexor strain in his right elbow.

He returned to the lineup on Aug. 5 as the designated hitter, but didn't resume throwing to bases until Aug. 24. In the midst of Judge's six-week throwing rehab, Yankees manager Aaron Boone raised eyebrows when he said he doubted Judge would get back to "throwing like he normally does at any point this year." Judge himself pushed back against the comments and Boone later walked them back.

How did the injury affect Judge's arm strength?

But upon Judge's return to the outfield on Sept. 5, the Blue Jays tested his throwing arm, and the hulking slugger lacked the velocity on his throws from the outfield that he had prior to sustaining the elbow injury. Judge, who routinely hit 90-plus mph on the radar gun on throws from the outfield, had just two throws exceed 80 mph during his return to the outfield in the regular season, which saw him split time between right field and designated hitter. During the wild-card series, the Red Sox tested Judge's throwing arm in a key situation, leading to a slower throw from the Yankees outfielder, who downplayed the lower velocity number after the game.

And while his throwing arm remained somewhat compromised, he did hit 90.2 mph on the radar gun on one throw during Game 1 of the ALDS.

Fortunately for the Yankees, Judge's bat was not compromised. On the heels of winning his first batting title and compiling his second straight season with 50-plus home runs, Judge authored his best playoff performance to date, slashing .500/.581/.692 with one home run, a pair of doubles, seven RBI and five runs scored in seven games played.

Judge is the odds-on favorite to win his second straight AL MVP award.

Aaron Judge Praises Garrett Crochet As 'Best Pitcher in Baseball' After Game 1 Gem

Cy Young candidate Garrett Crochet pitched an absolute gem on Tuesday night, allowing one run on four hits while striking out 11 batters as the Red Sox took down the Yankees 3–1 in the Bronx. Boston now leads the American League wild-card playoff series 1–0.

Following the contest—which saw the Sox come back from down a run in the seventh—slugger Aaron Judge spoke about the challenges he and his New York teammates faced against the 25-year-old hurler, and made what was likely a painful admission:

"He's the best pitcher in the game," Judge explained. "He's gonna work all his pitches, worked a little more off-speed in there early on. We got the Volpe homer but couldn't really, when we got guys on, couldn't do much after that."

Game recognize game.

For what it's worth, Judge did find some relative success against Crochet, going 1-for-3 from the dish while striking out in the sixth.

The wild-card series between two of MLB's biggest rivals will continue on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium, with Carlos Rodon set to to the rubber for New York while Brayan Bello goes for the Red Sox.

Not just Yang & Scales: 18-touch Celtic dud must be dropped by Rodgers

Celtic’s miserable season continues. On Sunday, Brendan Rodgers’ side suffered their first Premiership defeat of the campaign, losing 2-0 at Dens Park against Dundee, both goals coming in the first half, the second of which was an unfortunate Cameron Carter-Vickers own goal.

This was the Hoops’ first defeat at Dens since 1988, leaving them five points adrift league leaders Hearts, who they face at Tynecastle in a mouthwatering contest next Sunday.

Before then, the Celts are under pressure to get off the mark in the Europa League too, having yielded just one point from their first two matches, welcoming Austrian champions Sturm Graz to Parkhead on Thursday.

Ahead of these two massive fixtures, which Celtic summer signing should be concerned about losing his place in the starting lineup? Well, Yang is certainly one of them.

Why Yang was hooked at half time at Dundee

Among many players who offered very little on Sunday was Yang Hyun-Jun.

With Daizen Maeda sidelined due to a hamstring injury, Yang came into attack, chosen over James Forrest and summer signing Michel-Ange Balikwisha.

Well, the Korea Republic international touched the ball 25 times in the first half, attempting zero dribbles, so Chris Sutton, speaking during Sky Sports’ coverage at half time, asserted “just get him off”, adding that he’d offered absolutely nothing.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Well, Rodgers must’ve been listening, because Forrest replaced Yang during the interval, bringing to an end his first Premiership start since 23 August.

Meantime, at the other end of the pitch, Liam Scales endured a nightmare afternoon, turned inside and out by Dundee forwards Simon Murray, Cameron Congreve and Joe Westley, who caused the Celtic back-line problems all afternoon.

However, it is neither Scales nor Yang who should be most worried about their starting spot following this catastrophic defeat to Steven Pressley’s side who, lest we forget, were pre-season favourites for relegation.

Celtic star Rodgers must drop

As has been well documented, at the moment the transfer window slammed shut, Celtic did not have a senior centre-forward in their squad, following the sale of Adam Idah to Swansea City.

Thus, Kelechi Iheanacho arrived as a free agent, making a decent start to life in Glasgow in fairness to him, converting penalties against both Kilmarnock and Motherwell, as well as netting against Crvena zvezda in the Europa League.

However, as the table below documents, the Nigerian was completely anonymous in Dundee on Sunday.

Iheanacho did rank highly for shots, mustering four in total, the most of any player, but this didn’t yield anything, thwacking the woodwork once as well as missing one Opta-defined big chance.

He also won only 50% of his duels while, most concerningly, he touched the ball just 20 times, the same number as Balikwisha, who was introduced in the 64th minute and 15 fewer than ‘keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Considering Iheanacho played only around 1,300 minutes last season for Middlesbrough and Sevilla, he was always going to need time to get up to speed, and that was certainly apparent at the weekend.

Had Maeda been fit, he would surely have dropped out of the team on Thursday, although youngster Johnny Kenny, who came on at half-time, is talented enough to displace Iheanacho, so may feel he deserves an opportunity.

Thus, with huge games against Sturm Graz, Hearts, Midtjylland and Rangers to come in the next fortnight, the Celts’ may stand a better chance of winning these matches with the Nigerian left in reserve, utilised as an option off the bench.

John Textor makes Sheffield Wednesday contact as EFL prepare to relax key rule

After they were placed into administration last Friday, Sheffield Wednesday have now received contact from American billionaire John Textor about buying the club.

The Owls knew the inevitable was coming for some time and it speaks volumes that many around the club will be relieved to be in administration rather than under the ownership of Dejphon Chansiri. His decade-long ownership has finally come to an end following a period in which staff and players went unpaid on a number of occasions.

Whilst there may be some light at the end of the tunnel off the pitch, however, Sheffield Wednesday have suffered on it. Henrik Pedersen’s side have been dealt an automatic 12-point deduction which has left them on -6 points and an impossible battle to stay up in the Championship.

Many have had their say on the consequences that they’ve been handed by the EFL, including Gary Lineker. The former Match of the Day host told The Rest is Football podcast: “They have gone into administration, obviously, and hopefully they can sort it all out. But they have got the 12-point penalty and are now on -6.

“I understand why clubs have to suffer repercussions, but I just think it’s like kicking a club when it’s down and at its lowest. We have had this with other clubs, and it just doesn’t sit well. It’s almost like the fans take the punishment.”

Julian Pitts, Kris Wigfield, Paul Stanley and Begbies Traynor have been appointed joint-administrators and are tasked with finding a suitable buyer for the club, with the EFL ready to relax their 21-day insolvency guideline to fast-track any potential sale.

John Textor makes contact with Sheffield Wednesday

According to reporter Alan Myers, Textor has now made contact with Sheffield Wednesday and their administrators about a potential deal to buy the club.

The American billionaire has also been linked with Wolverhampton Wanderers and it’s clear that he’s looking to invest in English football after selling his Crystal Palace shares in the summer.

That said, Sheffield Wednesday should proceed with caution. Having only just ended a toxic relationship with Chansiri, the last thing they need is another difficult ownership.

Textor stole the headlines when he resigned from his leadership position at Lyon after they were relegated to Ligue 2 amid financial problems. Although they have now been reinstated to France’s top flight and Textor remains a shareholder from afar, his day-to-day role received major protest from fans.

A repeat at Sheffield Wednesday is not guaranteed, but the Owls must ensure that Textor is right for them if they are to add themselves to his portfolio of clubs.

Bad Bunny Has Foul Ball Fall Right Into His Lap at Yankee Stadium

The Yankees were able to mount a rally to avoid elimination at the hands of the Blue Jays on Tuesday night in the Bronx, setting up another win-or-go-home situation for themselves in Game 4. Aaron Judge played likely hero among several and it's possible momentum has shifted.

Bad Bunny, who was recently announced as the halftime entertainment for the upcoming Super Bowl, had little to do with the final score but briefly became the main character once again when a foul ball drifted over to his incredibly good seat right behind home plate.

Mr. Bunny didn't exactly stick his nose in there to make a play on the pop-up but the fan seated behind him failed to make the play and a lucky souvenir hopped right into the artist's real estate.

Baseball historians may remember that Bad Bunny was a participant in the 2022 All-Star Celebrity Softball Game at Dodger Stadium.

They say the ball finds you in this sport and in this case, with all the headlines surrounding his Super Bowl nod and a fresh off hosting , perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that this guy got involved.

Blue Jays Exploit Dodgers’ Biggest Weakness to Win World Series Game 1

TORONTO — In the end, the biggest ovation of the night might have come after an out. There had been so much to cheer already as the Blue Jays pecked away at the Dodgers’ lead, their bullpen and their sense of invincibility. Rogers Centre shook after the home runs. It roared at the run-scoring singles. It rocked at the walks and the great plays and the filthy pitches. And in an 11–4 romp over Los Angeles in Canada’s first World Series game in 32 years, there were plenty of those. But it was after Daulton Varsho flied to left field to end the six-hit, nine-run, game-deciding sixth inning that the sellout crowd of 44,353 rose to its feet as one and applauded.

“The crowd was electric tonight,” said manager John Schneider. “This is a special place to play. Everyone here in this city here, in this building, and across the country, we feel it for sure.”

The fans appreciated what was happening in the first World Series game in Canada since Joe Carter hit the biggest home run in Fall Classic history in 1993, and the first World Series game played by the defending champion since the Phillies tried and failed to make it two straight in 2009. And they appreciated how it was happening, in classic Blue Jays fashion: at-bats that felt like a test of endurance, hard contact up the middle and then devastating slug. No one struck out in the inning (and the Jays were rung up just four times all game). Everyone but Ernie Clement—who drove in the first run of the inning but was erased on a fielder’s choice—scored. Addison Barger added the first pinch-hit grand slam in World Series history. It marked the most runs scored in a single Fall Classic inning since 1968. Carter is scheduled to throw out the first pitch of Game 2; they should have brought him out early and let him tee off against the Dodgers’ bullpen.

“I think overall we just played our game,” said Varsho. “We didn’t try to do anything more. Honestly, we just showed everybody what we can do as a lineup.”

Amid sport-wide consternation over whether the Dodgers and their record $329 million payroll are ruining baseball, it was easy to miss just how good a baseball team the Blue Jays are. Sure, the Dodgers’ lineup begins with three Hall of Famers—two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani, self-made shortstop Mookie Betts and first baseman Freddie Freeman. (Ohtani is especially unpopular here because he spurned the Blue Jays and chose the Dodgers. This week Schneider jokingly asked him to return the Blue Jays cap and dog jacket the team had given him during the recruiting process.) But the guy hitting third in Toronto, first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., had six home runs and three strikeouts in the first three weeks of October. DH George Springer hit perhaps the second most famous three-run homer in Blue Jays history last week to help the team capture the pennant. And as a group, no one struck out less this season than Toronto.

The Blue Jays were also enjoying a return by one of their best players: At second base was Bo Bichette, the two-time All-Star shortstop who had not played since suffering a left knee sprain on Sept. 6 and had not played second since he got eight innings there at Triple A Buffalo in 2019.

He fought furiously to return in time to contribute to this historic run before his free agency dawns this winter, and finally, on the eve of the World Series, he told Schneider he was ready. But in deference to how well his replacement, defensive wizard Andrés Giménez has played, Bichette offered to man second.

Asked before the game if he could estimate how close to full health he was, Bichette demurred. “I don’t know about a percentage, but I know I’m good enough to play,” Bichette said. “And I feel good enough to produce. So that’s all that matters to me.” The verdict was in soon enough: He got the green light on a 3–0 pitch in the first and singled; he made a running, spinning grab of a grounder in the fourth; and it was his sixth-inning walk that keyed the rally.

Bo Bichette (left) returned from injury to man second base behind Game 1 starter Trey Yesavage. / Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images

The pitching was good enough to get them there. The Blue Jays joke about their gray-haired rotation—34-year-old Kevin Gausman, 30-year-old Shane Biever, 41-year-old Max Scherzer, 36-year-old Chris Bassitt and 31-year-old José Berríos combined for 78% of the team’s innings from starters—but on Friday it was the youngest man on the roster who took the ball. Trey Yesavage, a 22-year-old who spent more time this season with the Single A Dunedin Blue Jays than with the big club, entered October with 14 major league innings pitched. Toronto manager John Schneider vaguely remembered a “Hey, nice to meet you, kid. Welcome to the organization,” interaction in spring training; L.A. manager Dave Roberts hadn’t heard of the kid until he blanked the Yankees for 5 ⅓ innings in Game 2 of the ALDS.

Yesavage allowed five runs in four innings against the Mariners in Game 2 of the ALCS and two in 5 ⅔ in Game 5, but Schneider liked that the Dodgers had never seen him before. Yesavage releases the ball from what feels like somewhere in the second deck—7.1 feet in the air compared to the major league average of 5.8 feet—and previous opponents lamented that it took time to adjust to the strange visual.

It took the Dodgers an inning. Yesavage set down Ohtani, Betts and Freeman in order in the first, but Smith walked, Teoscar Hernández grounded out and Muncy singled to put runners on the corners. Kiké Hernández, as he so often does at this time of year, came through with a single up the middle to plate the first run. Schneider got the bullpen up, but Yesavage—who was navigating the most listless stuff of his young career—induced Ohtani to ground to first to end the threat. An inning later the Dodgers tacked on another on a Smith single.

Meanwhile, Dodgers ace Blake Snell was making his own adjustments. After escaping a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the first, he tweaked his posture and filled up the strike zone. But in the fourth, he allowed a leadoff 328-foot single to the slow-footed Alejandro Kirk and a first-pitch blast to center by Daulton Varsho to tie the game. It was the first home run Snell had given up to a left-hander all season.

It looked like it might set the stage for a classic, the sort of pitchers' duel both teams believe they are positioned to win. Instead Bichette opened the sixth inning with that walk, Kirk followed with a single and Snell hit Varsho with a pitch. Out came Roberts.

All October, the theory had been that the Dodgers’ bullpen was its weakness. This season, the team got 3.2 WAR (ninth in baseball) from its starting pitchers. From the bullpen it got –6.4 WAR, second-worst. Almost no one tested the premise this postseason, though, because the starters pitched so exceptionally. In the two-game, 18-inning wild card series, Roberts called on his relief corps for only 4 ⅓ innings; in the four-game, 38-inning NLDS, that figure was 14 ⅓ (but five of them in Game 3, when they essentially punted); and in the four-game, 36-inning NLCS, just 7 ⅔.

On Friday, the Blue Jays found out it was true. They handed Snell his worst outing in two years, and then they demolished everyone else who showed up. Emmet Sheehan got one out and gave up three runs. Anthony Banda got two outs and gave up three runs. Justin Wrobleski and Will Klein, the two lowest-leverage arms in the Los Angeles bullpen, each got through an inning mostly because everyone in Toronto seemed to understand that it was time to go home. Even Ohtani sprinted around the bases when he homered in the seventh. When he batted with two outs in the ninth and the game long decided, the fans serenaded him: "We don't need you."

It was true. Ohtani walked, but Betts struck out. The Dodgers will have to wait another day to ruin baseball. First they have to clean up their ruined bullpen.
