Marlar outraged at women playing with the men

The appointment of Robin Marlar as the MCC president for the coming year always had the potential to be something of a banana skin for the club, but even his critics must have been surprised that he managed to make the front page of a national newspaper less than 24 hours after taking office.Marlar, who, in a journalistic career of more than 40 years has never shied away from speaking his mind, warranted the second lead story in the weekend’s Sunday Telegraph with a comment he made about women’s cricket. With reference to comments made to Cricinfo last week by Clare Connor, England’s captain, that two schoolgirls (Sarah Taylor and Holly Colvin) would be in the Brighton College 1st XI next summer, Marlar leapt off the fence. “Girls! I think it’s absolutely outrageous.”The MCC’s view is that mixed cricket at adult level doesn’t happen. If there’s an 18-year-old fast bowler who can bowl at 80mph and he’s been brought up properly then he shouldn’t want to hurt a lady at any cost.” , Marlar was then asked what if a girl could bows at 80mph? “Then, I’d be asking some serious questions about whether she’s had a sex change.”There is a terrific difference between social and competitive cricket,” he added. “Fred Trueman knocked me around when I batted against him at the age of 17. I do not see many men playing in women’s league football.”The MCC has done much to shed its image as being a home for old-fashioned and male-chauvinistic octogenarians, but Marlar’s comments will hardly help.Rachel Heyhoe-Flint, the first woman member of MCC’s committee, sprung to Marlar’s defence. “Robin is just being a gentleman,” he said. “He just has some anxieties about a girl playing in a match which is reaching a tense conclusion and worrying if a male bowler will stick in a short ball.”But John Spencer, the master in charge of cricket at Brighton College and, like Marlar, a former Sussex player, disagreed. “Robin’s comments are outdated because there are laws of sex discrimination in place now,” he told The Times. “Girls are attracted to Brighton College because they know they will be given a fair deal. I have tried to be careful over selection when the opposition have had a very fast bowler, like Dulwich College did this summer. But the school believes in equal opportunities and I know of one or two other schools who include girls in their first XI.”The MCC press office better brace itself. This is unlikely to be the last time that Marlar will speak his mind.

Lara: 'The problem is within the team'

Lara: ‘I don’t think it matters that much who is leading the team – if you don’t play good cricket you’re not going to win’© Getty Images

Brian Lara’s position as West Indies captain has come under fire in recent months. Several disgruntled former Test players – most notably Sir Viv Richards – have attacked him for West Indies’ failures. Lara’s team has struggled to arrest a steady slide, and at times the strain of leading a team that regularly under-performs shows on Lara’s face. Ahead of their first match in this year’s Champions Trophy Lara reconciled himself to the criticism.”The expectations are always great,” he said at the Rose Bowl today. “You have to remember that just two decades ago the West Indies were invincible. People got accustomed to that style of cricket and the winning ways. We do understand how emotional people are about cricket in the West Indies. I feel it is a tough ask of a young and inexperienced team – one that has been chopping and changing not only because of bad performance but injury as well. We’ve been losing really badly to some of the top sides, and people want to see us show a bit more fight and that’s what we’re trying to instill in the guys.”But that fight has not been forthcoming often enough, and this has led to repeated calls for Lara’s removal as captain, and scathing criticism of the team. “People are entitled to their opinion. We’ve got to take our ability and our talents and get it going in the right direction,” admitted Lara. “We’ve got to accept the fact that people are disappointed. Some people put pen to paper and express themselves. We have to galvanise ourselves, and we can’t spend too much time thinking about what the critics have to say.”One of the problems for Lara is that his team comprises people from several countries. The West Indies exists as an entity only when it comes to playing cricket. This often makes it hard to bind a disparate group of cricketers into one fighting unit. But the team has worked towards being more united. “We spent some time in Grenada after the England tour. We got the guys together and team gelling. It wasn’t much cricket there,” explained Lara. “We’ve been here ten days now and we’ve been trying to get the guys together. The spirit is very good. We have some experienced guys coming back in [Mervyn] Dillon and Wavell Hinds, and these guys should help in that area.”More than once Lara has publicly called on his players to show more pride in the maroon cap, but they have seldom responded with positive action. When asked if he was happy with the way his team responded to him, Lara said: “I don’t like the results. The players accept the fact that the problem is within the team, and that we have to sort it out. I don’t think it matters that much who is leading the team – if you don’t play good cricket you’re not going to win.”West Indies have traditionally done well against South Africa in big tournaments such as the World Cup. This, combined with the fact that South Africa’s victory over Bangladesh ended a terrible run of ten consecutive defeats, has led to suggestions that West Indies are favourites to top their pool. Lara, however, shrugged off the “favourites” tag. “I think in recent times South Africa have had the upper hand against us. I know for a fact that losing ten straight games is going to hurt them. They’re going to come out fighting. I don’t think the West Indies could be labelled favourites in the pool.”Either way, we’ll find out soon enough, with tomorrow’s game against Bangladesh providing an insight into the state of the West Indian team.

Bournemouth hammer Alton to reach final

Bournemouth are through to the Southern Electric Premier League’s Contracting Cup final at the Rose Bowl on Tuesday week, August 5 after crushing Alton by ten wickets at the BAT ground. When Ben Jansen (40) and Huw Ross (32) helped Alton to a competitive 137-8 off 20 overs, it appeared as though Bournemouth might have a fight on their hads. But Adam Voges and Richard Scott were far too good for the Premier Division 3 bowlers, and seldom looked in any trouble as Bournemouth coasted home in 16.3 overs.Voges twice hit sixes over the BAT pavilion in an unbeaten 69, while left-handed Scott was equally dominant, cracked two sixes and six fours in his 60 not out.Bournemouth play Havant in the Rose Bowl final.

The mirage of a promising series

Rarely could a contest that promised so much have produced so little as the 1981-82 series between India and England. The Indians had performed very well at home over the past few years, and their feat of sharing a rubber in Australia for the first time the previous season had generated considerable interest. The Englishmen, for their part, had come back in dream fashion during the summer to win the Ashes after a fascinating contest with Australia. Naturally, the stage seemed set for a battle royal.

Kapil Dev and Dilip Vengsarkar provided some entertaining batting along the way, and Ravi Shastri, with ‘a 30-year-old head on 20-year-old shoulders,’ came of age as a utility man during the series. But the inability of Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Pranab Roy, Kirti Azad, Ashok Malhotra and Sandip Patil to make the most of their opportunities was a handicap that India could ill afford.

What was served up to an unsuspecting public, however, was a damp squib. Five of the six Tests were drawn, all of them in a row after India wrapped up the first Test in four days. The cricket was of the comatose variety, the batting uninspired, and the bowling little better. Moreover, it was largely slow-motion cricket, with a negative strategy being blatantly pursued by both sides. Even slow bowlers took their time in sending down their overs, and time was wasted at any available opportunity. Symbolizing the tardy approach was the England over rate on the third morning of the fifth Test at Madras, less than 10 per hour. Laborious batting, ridiculously slow over rates, and defensive tactics ruined the series as a spectacle, despite the fact that there were dynamic players on both sides, including two of the leading all-rounders in the game in Kapil Dev and Ian Botham. The England super-star came to this country riding a crest of success following his unbelievable feats in the Ashes series. He did not disappoint, topping the Test averages with 440 runs at 55.00. Only in bowling was he some disappointment. But then, on slow, placid pitches, it was almost next to impossible for any bowler to pick up wickets easily, and his figures of 17 wickets at 38.82 must be viewed in this perspective.Graham Gooch and David Gower were the other enterprising players. The former topped the aggregates both for the Tests (487) and the tour (967) and generally was in rip-roaring form. Gower was less consistent, but he did get 375 runs in the Tests and 755 on the tour. Geoffrey Boycott and Chris Tavare were predictably more cautious in their approach, but they also finished among the runs. Boycott, making his first tour of India at 41, played only in the first four Tests, but this was enough for him to achieve his primary objective of becoming the highest run-getter in Test history. In the third Test at New Delhi, he surpassed Gary Sobers’ tally of 8032 runs, also completing his 22nd and last century in what turned out to be his penultimate Test. He also had the satisfaction of heading the tour figures, scoring 701 runs at an average of 77.89. The inability of skipper Keith Fletcher to strike form and the failure of Mike Gatting, however, meant that the batting had loopholes and could be pierced. The much-vaunted England bowling of Bob Willis, Botham, John Lever, Derek Underwood, Graham Dilley and John Emburey was blunted by slow pitches, and the Indian batsmen had no difficulty in negotiating them. Sunil Gavaskar ended up with his usual packet of runs 500 runs at 62.50, including a mammoth 172 in the second Test at Bangalore, for which he batted 708 minutes the longest innings by an Indian in first-class cricket. In fact, he was on the field for all but four balls of the match, opening the innings and being ninth out. Gundappa Viswanath, after a slow start, got a century and a double century, finishing with 466 runs at 58.25. His 222 in the fifth Test at Madras was the highest by an Indian against England.During that match, he and Yashpal Sharma also became the seventh pair of batsmen to bat throughout an uninterrupted day of Test cricket. Indeed, it was only the second time that England had failed to take a wicket during a complete day’s play, and the two became only the second Indian pair after Vinoo Mankad and Pankaj Roy (during their record 413-run opening partnership) to bat unbeaten through a day’s play in Test cricket. The third-wicket partnership of 316 runs between Viswanath and Yashpal was the Indian record for that wicket against all countries.Kapil Dev and Dilip Vengsarkar provided some entertaining batting along the way, and Ravi Shastri, with ‘a 30-year-old head on 20-year-old shoulders,’ came of age as a utility man during the series. But the inability of Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Pranab Roy, Kirti Azad, Ashok Malhotra and Sandip Patil to make the most of their opportunities was a handicap that India could ill afford. Patil was a major disappointment, especially after his heroics in Australia, and was dropped midway through the series, as was Srikkanth, who had been hailed as a bright new star with his swashbuckling approach. The Indian bowling, in the hands of two medium-pacers and two left-arm spinners, lacked variety. With the exception of Dilip Doshi, the attack could do little on the unhelpful pitches. Shastri was still on the learning curve, while Kapil Dev and Madan Lal, after their purple patch at Bombay when they dismissed England on their own for 102, could achieve little. Doshi, however, bowled with his heart on his sleeve and finished with 22 wickets at 21.27 apiece a splendid record, given the circumstances. The tour also featured a one-day international series in which India performed commendably, winning by a 2-1 margin. The first match of the series at Ahmedabad was, in fact, the first one-day international in India.

Sunderland team news vs Charlton

Sunderland have now revealed a triple injury boost before they play Charlton Athletic away from home in League One on Saturday afternoon.

The Lowdown: Back on track

Alex Neil finally got his first win as manager of the Wearside club with an emphatic 3-o win away at Wigan Athletic over the weekend, which in turn lifted them back into the playoff spots.

They now face a Charlton team on Saturday who are looking over their shoulders after five losses in a row in the division, and so the Stadium of Light faithful should now be full of confidence that they can go on and clinch another result.

The Latest: Training update

Taking to Twitter, the Black Cats have now posted training photos of Aiden McGeady, Luke O’Nien and Nathan Broadhead, who are all returning from injury, ahead of the match against the Addicks.

They captioned the post: ‘On the way back,’ suggesting that they are all set to return to the squad soon.

The Verdict: Boost

If all three could be deemed fit enough to come back in against CAFC, then it would certainly be a big boost for Neil.

They all rank in the top six players for SAFC in terms of performances in the league so far this season, according to WhoScored, and have contributed ten goals and five assists between them combined.

Nonetheless, if they can stay fit from now until the end of the term, it will give Sunderland the best possible chance of promotion up to the Championship.

Arsenal receive injury boost

Arsene Wenger has clarified that all-being-well Jack Wilshere should return to action for Arsenal in March.

The England international midfielder has not featured for The Gunners this season as yet due to an ankle injury, and suffered a setback before Christmas as his rehabilitation looked to be nearing an end.

However the French coach is looking to have his talisman back available before the end of the season, but won’t rush his recovery.

“Jack can be back within a month if all goes well,” Wenger told Sky Sports.

“The recovery of his latest problems looks very good. The latest scan was very positive.

“We go cautiously step-by-step because we tried to push him back quicker in the first instance and he had a setback. So this time we have to be cautious and not go too quick.

“He can be back before then end of the season, of course,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Arsenal take on AC Milan at the San Siro on Wednesday night, and the Emirates Stadium manager has admitted to studying Tottenham’s victory over the Italian giants from last season in preparation for the game.

“I have seen [that game], yes. Milan had a lot of the ball and Tottenham caught them on the break at the end of the game,” he told the club’s official website.

“You never decide when you break, you break when you can. It was a game which was vastly dominated, especially in the second half, by Milan.

“We will not decide at the start of the game that we will sit in our half if we have to, like Tottenham did. We will do it and then try to catch them on the break.

“But at the start we will try to get out of our own half and try to get up there and play. Spurs won the game when they were dominated, but that is football today,” he stated.

Taiwo signs with Milan

Nigeria fullback Taye Taiwo has joined Serie A champions AC Milan on a free transfer from Ligue 1 club Marseille.Taiwo, 26, completed a medical with Milan on Wednesday before finalising his switch from the Stade Velodrome to the San Siro on Thursday, signing a three-year contract.

The left-back had made more than 185 appearances in six seasons with Marseille, playing a key part in the club’s Ligue 1 championship success last season.

Formerly of Nigerian clubs Lobi Stars and Gabros, Taiwo scored the winner for Marseille in their League Cup final victory against Montpellier last month.

“I thank God for this move, joining another big team like AC Milan is a dream come true,” Taiwo said.

“I am leaving a big club for another one, one I was only able to dream of playing for as a kid.”

“I will surely miss the city and Olympique Marseille, the fans, players, management and French football in general.”

“It is emotional and sad to leave a place I have come to call home but I’m taking a piece of Marseille with me.”

Taiwo has 48 caps for Nigeria and appeared in the 2010 World Cup finals.

He joins a Milan side celebrating their first Scudetto since 2004, the same year he made his full international debut.

“I hope to bring my best to a team that’s parading great players already,” he said.

“The three-year deal is signed now and all I can do is give my all to a dream club and win trophies to complete the union.”

“I am a happy man and my immediate target is to be a winner here.”

Avram Grant talks up Scott Parker’s form

West Ham United boss Avram Grant has hailed Scott Parker as the best English midfielder in the Premier League this season.

The 30-year-old has impressed despite the Hammers' struggles this term and Grant believes that Parker should be back in Fabio Capello's England squad as a result.

He said after the 1-1 draw with Wolves at Molineux:"I think if you look at all the English midfielders, with respect to others, there is no doubt that Scott, from the beginning of the season, has been the best midfielder.

"I need to talk to Fabio Capello! I am not the England manager, but I am sure that Scott deserves to be there.

"He played well offensively and defensively, was good with the ball. He has a great record for blocking shots of the other team and is very clever and professional – a good guy, very positive.

Roma join Newcastle in pursuit of United ace

Newcastle United will face stiff competition from Italian giants Roma to sign Manchester United’s highly rated, wantaway midfielder Ravel Morrison according to talkSPORT.

The Magpies had a £500,000 bid rejected by the English champions last week and are set to increase their offer in order to bring one of the hottest prospects in European football to the North East. But Serie A club Roma have been informed that Morrison would be open to a switch to Italy and are set to approach him and his representatives this month.

The 18-year-old is out of contract in the summer and Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that the player demanded ‘unrealistic’ contract demands and although Morrison claims otherwise, the two parties are still miles apart. With the player’s contract expiring in six months, clubs are allowed to discuss a possible move in the summer with the player on a free but Sir Alex is confident it won’t come to that.

Morrison has made just three first team appearances for United; all in the League Cup; and is growing more and more concerned with his lack of action, even though Sir Alex has had horrific selection problems in the centre of midfield, it seems he feels the England-under 19 playmaker is not ready.

WAG Weekly: Nani scores an absolute stunner

The 2010/11 season has arguably Nani’s year and the Portuguese winger has finally shown the Old Trafford faithful what all the fuss was about and why Sir Alex Ferguson maintained his belief that he would come good at Manchester United. It is a shame that his season has been cut short during the past week, but that is generally what happens when an opponent puts studs into your shin bone.

While Nani looks to recoup at home and get himself back to full fitness he can take great pleasure while his beautiful other half, Daniela Martins, looks after him. I’m sure Nani is gutted at missing a chunk of United’s run-in, although I am certain that Miss Martins will more than cushion the blow judging by the gallery below.
