The FIVE transfers that would greatly improve Arsenal

recent away loss to Norwich would naturally have sent a number of supporters into an angry frenzy. Arsene Wenger’s team had no right to play as poorly as they did, and one step further would suggest that Norwich had no right to win that game. But the major talking point—as it always is when Arsenal lose in embarrassing fashion—is what the club should be doing with all that cash that’s currently stuffed away.

There wasn’t too much said following the arrival of Santi Cazorla, although many were still upset at a lack of obvious replacement for Alex Song. But Arsenal had seemingly identified and addressed the problem areas in attack. All that was missing was transmitting the good-on-paper to good-on-the-pitch and getting results.

But Arsenal are still short—they always will be because Arsene Wenger appears powerless to stop big players leaving at the end of every season. He’ll replace, hopefully, but it is often never enough. Meanwhile, the cash reserves—a figure that would turn many other clubs around Europe green with envy—sits in a pot and gives Arsenal supporters plenty of ammunition to fire back at the club.

But regardless of how well Wenger did to land his three summer signings, there are still a number of holes in the team which need addressing.

Yaroslav Rakitskiy

Yaroslav Rakitskiy has three league titles to his name as well as three domestic cups. He’s a regular in the Shakhtar defence and has also gathered together a solid number of international caps. But the recently turned 23-year-old would bring plenty to an Arsenal defence that has improved but may still be lacking in quality in numbers. Per Mertesacker has been excellent for the best part of the season so far for Arsenal, and Laurent Koscielny proved to be the Gunners’ best defender last term. But Arsene Wenger’s side are not shy of dancing with a disastrous injury plague. Rakitskiy really impressed two seasons ago when his side played Barcelona in the Champions League. The Ukrainian champions were on the end of a heavy loss but the young centre-back managed to get himself a goal. He also picked up a number of links to major clubs in western Europe, signifying that he was perhaps one of the best young defenders in Europe. He’s versatile and would be able to plug a gap in midfield if needed, but he reads the game well and is positionally very good. As mentioned, Arsenal’s defence are improving, but how many are totally satisfied with what they’re seeing and the options available?

Yevhen Konoplyanka

Yevhen Konoplyanka might sometimes find himself in the shadow of Andriy Yarmolenko whenever the two share a pitch for their national side. After all, the latter has been described as one to lead this generation of Ukrainian football. But Konoplyanka seems to have much more natural ability and is a player rightly picking up plenty of praise in eastern Europe. He’s a player who would greatly improve Arsenal’s wide position, where Lukas Podolski is the sure-starter on the left while Gervinho, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are the other options for the right. Arguably, neither of the two England internationals are natural wide players, while Gervinho’s inconsistency should prove to be a real problem going forward. Konoplyanka has the trickery of a successful and natural wide player. He also has excellent delivery on his crosses into the box while in open play and from corners—something which Arsenal have lacked in quality for many years. But he’s a player who can really bring an attack to life. He’s not afraid to shoot from distance and is a very good striker of the ball. The Dnipro midfielder is already a regular in the national team and undoubtedly fits the bill of a typical Arsene Wenger signing.

Klass Jan-Huntelaar

There has been plenty of talk about Adrian Lopez or Fernando Llorente arriving at Arsenal in the near future to reinforce the attack. However, there’s been surprisingly less said about the availability of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. The Dutch striker is currently in the last year of his contract at Schalke and has expressed a desire to leave Veltins Arena once the season is over. He was the top scorer in the Bundesliga last season, a natural predator around the box and is the favourite among Dutch supporters to start for the national team ahead of Robin van Persie. Huntelaar is sure to see interest in him rise as the season continues, but Arsenal would do very well to add a proven and natural scorer such as him to their squad. He’s managed to settle in Germany and could once again be ready for another big move. He’s comfortably one of the finest finishers in Europe at the moment.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is part of the current rising group of impressive goalkeepers in Germany. The Gladbach keeper’s age should not deter potential suitors as, even at the age of 20, he has already picked up his first international cap and is the regular starter for Lucian Favre’s side. Arsenal don’t have any real competition for goalkeepers and Wojciech Szczesny is hardly the most comfortable in goal. The Polish international has seen a string of errors over the past season result from laziness and lack of focus. Szczesny is simply too comfortable in the knowledge that the other options at Arsenal won’t displace him, but the introduction of ter Stegen, regardless of his age, would be a big boost to the goalkeeping position at the club. Szczesny is a good keeper but needs real competition.

Lars Bender

There were a few really hollow links with Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender towards the end of the last transfer window, but the German international’s versatility would be extremely welcome in Arsene Wenger’s side. Bender is naturally a central holding midfielder, one with excellent defensive abilities. But he’s also capable of slotting in at right-back and performing well. The lack of real quality in that position for the German national team may see Joachim Low opt to deploy the 23-year-old into the right side of defence. But Arsenal are notably short of reliable quality at right-back. There’s no telling what Bacary Sagna’s future holds following his two serious injuries, and Carl Jenkinson, despite some very good performances, is still young and learning his trade. Lars Bender would act as another much-needed body for the midfield and could work extremely well in a two-man pivot with Mikel Arteta. Much of this praise, however, could be equally sent over to Dortmund and his brother Sven, who would also be a great addition to the Arsenal team.

West Ham fans back bargain swoop for Shaqiri

West Ham fans have been discussing a summer swoop for Xherdan Shaqiri, after the Swiss winger said he would like to play in the Premier League next season.

Xherdan Shaqiri has been linked with a whole host of Premier League clubs since news broke that he has a £12m relegation clause in his contract, and West Ham fans think he would be a shrewd acquisition for Manuel Pellegrini.

The 26 year-old, who scored eight times for Stoke last season, has spoken out about his future with the Potters, saying he does expect to leave this summer.

“It is no secret that I will leave the club,” the Swiss international told Aargauer Zeitung.

[ad_pod ]

“I think the [Premier] league is perfect for me. I would love to stay in England but I don’t want to rule anything out. It’s the best league with the best players.”

Shaqiri is expected to star in Russia this summer, and could be tempted by the opportunity to link back up with Marko Arnautovic.

The pair shared some great times together at Stoke, scoring 26 and assisting 20 between the two of them across two Premier League seasons at the club.

You can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below, with some fans even preferring the wing wizard to more high profile targets…

In Focus: Southampton target Quincy Promes can make the difference in survival bid

According to Sky Sports, Southampton are interested in signing Spartak Moscow forward Quincy Promes, who has scored 58 goals in 115 games for the Russian club, before the January window slams shut, although they may have to smash their transfer record and pay £30m to bring him to St Mary’s.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Sky Sports says that Saints want the prolific 26-year-old and he is keen on a move to England, but Spartak want £30m for their star man.

The south coast outfit will need to eclipse the £18.1m they paid to sign Mario Lemina from Juventus to get a deal done, and it may be a priority in the remaining days of the month after they lost out to Everton in the race for Theo Walcott.

The report adds that the Netherlands international is under contract until 2021, and was named the Russia Premier League Footballer of the Year in 2017.

How has Promes done this season?

He has impressed.

The 26-year-old has scored 15 goals and provided a further eight assists in 25 appearances in all competitions for Spartak, with two of those goals coming in the group stages of the Champions League.

The Dutchman has played all across the front three positions – although primarily from the left wing – this term, showing his versatility.

According to WhoScored.com, the attacker has had 82 shots in 22 outings in the Russian top flight and in Europe this season, while he has made 67 key passes and successfully completed 34 of the 69 dribbles he has attempted.

Would he be a good signing for Southampton?

He certainly would be.

Saints have lacked goals and pace in their frontline over the course of the last 18 months, and Promes would provide the lowly south coast outfit with both.

While his £30m price tag may be seen as a problem, Southampton should be able to pay the fee in instalments like Liverpool are for Virgil van Dijk, meaning a deal this month shouldn’t be beyond them.

Losing their Premier League status would be a bigger problem and the 26-year-old is a player that can be the difference between survival and relegation, while the board know they need to restore some faith with the situation they find themselves in and after failing to bring Walcott back to St Mary’s.

Is Spaniard really a striking improvement for Arsenal?

Barcelona had not beaten Atletico Madrid this season. Over two legs in the Spanish Super Cup in August, Barcelona won on away goals, and yet they didn’t beat Diego Simeone’s side.

This past Saturday’s clash between both sides at the Vicente Calderon was a title decider, a head-to-head of the joint two best teams in Spain, tussling over undisputed rights to call themselves first. It was billed as a pivotal moment in the season and Real Madrid were nowhere to be seen.

In the absence of Lionel Messi and Neymar, both of whom were on the bench, Diego Costa was at the centre of attention. The Brazilian-born striker has been earmarked as Arsenal’s most obvious and perhaps best option for strengthening their attack either this month, though highly unlikely, or in the summer.

Following the 0-0 draw, which was far more entertaining than the score line suggests, Arsenal fans were questioning where that strengthening was coming from, with Costa not looking a clear-cut better forward than Olivier Giroud.

It doesn’t really make a lot of sense to question the merits of a player based on one match. That’s why clubs scout players for multiple games, months or even years.

In truth, the draw with Barcelona wasn’t the best match to gauge whether Costa was a suitable target for Arsene Wenger’s side. It’s what came before. It’s what will more than likely come afterwards. Costa, up there with the scoring records of the very best in Europe at this time, led Atletico’s comeback and eventual win against Real Madrid in the Copa Del Rey final last season. He was on the score sheet again when the two sides met this season in league. He scored four in three Champions League group games, helping Atletico to become the first team in this season’s competition to advance to the knockout round – and that speaks of Simeone’s team as a whole, not just Costa.

If you want more evidence as to how good Costa has been over these past 18 months: two of the very best national sides in the world were fighting, quite openly, about having him commit to either of them ahead of this summer’s World Cup.

Against Barcelona, Costa did a lot of work away from the penalty area – when Radamel Falcao was in the team, Costa was regularly deployed on the flanks. He fought for possession, he held up play; it wasn’t too dissimilar to what Giroud currently does for Arsenal. The difference between both men is quite plain, though: Costa’s 23 goals in all competitions to Giroud’s 10. Remember, it’s still January, and whatever may be said about a striker not being what a certain club needs, 23 at this stage and away from the otherworldly figures attained by Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is a remarkable feat.

But even with the obvious similarities between both Giroud and Costa – which is no bad thing if Arsenal are looking to strengthen along the same lines of what they already have – Costa is a far more natural goal scorer, or at least he looks it now after blossoming into such a forward under the tutelage of Simeone.

There’s a difference in their personalities too. Giroud, as good as he can be, doesn’t have that driving, belligerent style of Costa. The Brazilian is simply a menace and a constant threat for opposition defences. The Frenchman is a complement and an at times necessary aid to the wizardry of Arsenal’s midfield. But as the criticism goes, he’s not a forward who will hit big numbers. At least not now.

Come the end of the season, Atletico may have no choice but to sell Costa, predominantly due to their financial situation. Costa’s value is at its highest and the club will be foolish to turn down an offer in or around the player’s release clause.

Arsenal have the means to go ahead and make such a signing. Would it be worth it? What can be said about Costa at this time is that there is a lot of belief both inside Atletico and outside that he can fire the club to more silverware this season. The fact that one of Arsenal’s most obvious areas of criticism is the doubts over Giroud’s ability to do the same should be telling enough.

Think Again. Here’s Why Shawcross Isn’t The Man To Replace John Terry

Stoke City captain, Ryan Shawcross has been called up to the England squad to replace John Terry for the World Cup Qualifiers against San Marino and Poland next week.

The defender will get the chance to make his England debut after Terry retired from international football following the FA’s decision to bring a misconduct charge against him for racially abusing Anton Ferdinand, despite being cleared of the offence in court.

A mainstay of the England defence for a number of years, Terry’s retirement leaves the door open for a number of centre backs to fill the void left by the former skipper. Shawcross joins Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka and Joleon Lescott in Roy Hodgson’s squad and all four will know they now have a great opportunity to establish themselves as an England regular.

For Shawcross, the call up comes two years after his first. The former Manchester United player was included in the squad for a match against Egypt in March 2010 but was an unused substitute. His inclusion in the latest squad is at least a just reward for being one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders.

But, replacing John Terry is a big task. Quite possibly a step to far for Shawcross. Below we take a look at why the Stoke defender is not the man to replace JT.

He wont get an opportunity

Admittedly this is perhaps a harsh reason to cast doubt over Shawcross’ England chances but how can he replace Terry if he’s isn’t picked? The aforementioned Cahill, Jagielka and Lescott are all ahead of the Potters man in the pecking order and rightly so. All three are better defenders than the Shawcross and better on the ball. These three will battle it out for a place in the starting XI.

He lacks composure on the ball

A defender from the old school, Shawcross is an imposing figure at centre back. He’s big, strong, good in the air and strong in the tackle. Yes, he is a very dependable defender, but to succeed at international level you need a lot more than that. Frankly, the 25-year-old is not good enough in possession to establish himself in the England team.

Injuries influenced his selection

Would Shawcross have been picked if Chris Smalling and Phil Jones were fit? It seems unlikely. These two, along with Cahill, Jagielka and Lescott are the five centre backs that will be at the forefront of Roy Hodgson’s mind for the World Cup Qualifiers and the tournament itself. Equally, should Steven Caulker develop as expected than he too could force his way in ahead of the Stoke defender.

Liverpool fans adore the unlikely friendship between Salah and Lovren

Mohamed Salah is certainly the star of the show at Liverpool, and it is safe to say that the fans want him to stay at the club long term.

The attacker has had a stellar first season at Anfield, scoring 44 goals in all competitions and scooping PFA Player of the Year, Football Writers’ Player of the Year and the Premier League Golden Boot.

Salah also has an opportunity to get his hands on the biggest prize of all when Liverpool take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final on May 26.

On the pitch, the Egyptian international is tenacious and determined, while off it he seems good natured and kind, so it is no surprise that he is well-liked by his teammates.

[ad_pod ]

Interestingly, Salah seems to have hit it off with defender Dejan Lovren, who has had a fractured relationship with the fans in the past due to his inconsistent performances.

Not many would have thought that the duo would form a strong bond, but their interaction on social media suggests that a friendship is there.

On Reddit, Liverpool fans gave their take on the pair after spotting a photo of the two grinning at each other while training in Marbella.

Three reasons Southampton must hijack Bournemouth’s bid to sign Charly Musonda

According to reports in the Evening Standard, Bournemouth want to sign Chelsea attacker Charly Musonda on loan until the end of the season.

The Evening Standard says that the Blues are willing to let the 21-year-old leave on a temporary basis following the £15m arrival of Ross Barkley from Everton last week, and Cherries boss Eddie Howe watched the startlet score a brace in the as the west London outfit’s U23 side beat Portsmouth 2-1 win in the Checkatrade Trophy at Fratton Park on Tuesday night.

The report adds that the young Belgium U21 international is likely to attract interest from other clubs in the Premier League and in the Championship too, but the English top flight holders will want guarantees that he will play regularly in the second-half campaign at whichever team he joins.

Meanwhile, Southampton manager Mauricio Pelllegrino will be keen to strengthen his own squad during the January transfer window following a disappointing campaign, which sees them only lie above the relegation zone on goal difference.

The Argentine chief is likely to focus his business on attacking areas with his team scoring just 21 goals in their 22 Premier League matches so far this term, and bringing Musonda to St Mary’s could prove to be a shrewd move.

Here are three reasons Southampton must hijack Bournemouth’s bid to sign the Belgian…

They need a new attacker

There is no doubt that Southampton need to sign one – if not two – attackers to freshen up their options before the January transfer window slams shut at the end of the month.

Players like Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic simply aren’t doing enough right now, with the former scoring one goal and providing a further three assists in his last 30 Premier League appearances, while the latter has three goals and three assists in his previous 31 top flight games.

Musonda would certainly add a bit of spark as he can play in any of the three positions behind the striker in the 4-2-3-1 formation that Mauricio Pellegrino prefers.

His ability

The 21-year-old has scored four goals and provided one assist in four appearances in the EFL Trophy and EFL Cup this season, while he is clearly on the periphery of Antonio Conte’s thinking having made substitute appearances in the Premier League and the FA Cup.

Musonda is fast, has quick feet and loves to dribble at defenders, with WhoScored.com listing the latter as his main strength, while he has also shown that his finishing isn’t too shabby either.

Southampton lack that pace and the players in their squad to take opponents on and beat them, and in that regard the Belgian would be a welcome addition to their frontline.

Loan deal

While some Southampton supporters may have thought that their club was going to reinvest the £75m fee they received for Virgil van Dijk earlier this month, according to The Times that won’t be the case.

The Times says that while the south coast outfit are guaranteed to receive £70m for the Dutchman, it will be paid in three instalments and they have only received £17m so far.

Because of that, Saints may favour a loan deal for a versatile attacker like Musonda if it allows them to spend more money on a new centre-forward to cover the absence of the injured Charlie Austin, as well as a centre-back to replace van Dijk.

Arsenal star desperate to prove himself

centre-back Thomas Vermaelen says that he is keen to stay at the club and prove that he merits a starting spot, despite rumours that he could leave in January.

The Belgian international has seen his first-team role diluted this season under Arsene Wenger, whose table-topping side have entered battle with Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker as their defensive pairing of choice on most occasions.

Despite being the Gunners’ captain, Vermaelen has been confined to the bench, although he did feature in the weekend loss to Manchester United.

His infrequent opportunities have led to speculation of a January move away from the Emirates Stadium, with a host of Serie A sides thought to be keen.

But, Vermaelen says that he is fully focused on winning back his spot in the Arsenal starting XI:

“At the moment there is no story. I’m not talking about it. It’s now November but any moment things can happen. If they do, I’m ready and I’m not thinking about anything else.” He told the Evening Standard.

“I can keep talking about my situation. I’ve done that with the national team and I keep on reading stories that I want to leave. But that’s not the case. I’m still focused on the team at the moment and that’s what I want to do.

“I’m always positive. What I have said is that it is not about my situation but what the team do and I’m really happy that we’re top of the League. Personally I’m still confident I can play for this club and every chance I get I will do a job for this club.”

Vermaelen is desperate to a key man for Belgium ahead of the 2014 World Cup, where he is in direct competition with the likes of Vincent Kompany and Jan Vertonghen – who are both expected to be playing regularly for the remainder of the season.

Reina backed as Liverpool’s first choice

Liverpool back-up goalkeeper Brad Jones has admitted that team-mate Pepe Reina is the club’s first-choice stopper despite erratic form at the start of the season.

The Spaniard has been at fault for a number of goals that the Merseysiders have conceded and as such there have been rumblings in the press stating that Brendan Rodgers was getting fed up of the goalkeeper’s mistakes.

However, despite being expected to start for Liverpool against West Brom on Wednesday night, Jones has backed Reina as the Reds’ No.1.

“Pepe’s consistency is massive and a lot about being a goalkeeper at Liverpool is concentration because you aren’t getting peppered every week,” The Guardian have Jones as saying.

“You have got to look at it in context. Goalkeeping can turn on one decision at any given time. Sometimes you make the wrong decision but get away with it. Other times someone moves. It doesn’t matter who you are, you are going to be criticised over the odd mistake over the course of a season.

“You look at the top teams and every goalkeeper has made a mistake. For people to jump on the bandwagon and start criticising someone who has been at the top of his game, been in the top tier of football, for so long, is wrong.

“Pepe’s still only 30. You can’t start dismissing people and say: ‘That’s it.’ He’s a brilliant keeper and I don’t think there is any reason to start questioning him now,” he concluded.

The ‘four or five signings’ Pellegrini needs to bring to West Ham this summer

West Ham United appointed Manuel Pellegrini as their new manager on Tuesday, and he is already making plans in terms of recruitment this summer as he looks to take the club back into the top half of the Premier League table next season.

The 64-year-old has wasted no time in outlining how many players he is looking to add to his squad before the transfer window slams shut on August 9 – two days before the new campaign starts – with co-owner David Sullivan having the opportunity to go from zero to hero if he delivers these three new additions.

Speaking to whufc.com, the former Manchester City boss said: “I am sure that, with the players we have in this moment in the squad, and bringing maybe another four or five players in, we are going to have a strong team.”

It was clear to see that the east London outfit underperformed last term as they flirted with relegation despite bringing the likes of Pablo Zabaleta, Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez to the London Stadium, and the Chilean seems determined to ensure they don’t find themselves in a similar situation again.

The Mirror suggests that he could be given £75m to spend, and he will already have identified the positions and players that he wants to strengthen, as well as perhaps the individuals that are surplus to requirements.

Here are the acquisitions that would perfectly meet Pellegrini’s request for four or five new signings…

West Ham switched between loanee Joe Hart and Adrian this season with both making mistakes during the campaign, and the former unlikely to return to the London Stadium, Pellegrini will surely be looking to bring a new goalkeeper to the club.

The 64-year-old may well want a stopper that is going to be an undoubted number one rather than competing with Adrian, and Jack Butland could be the perfect answer.

The England international enjoyed another impressive Premier League campaign despite Stoke City’s relegation to the Championship, and he could be available for a slightly reduced fee as a result – something that will please the east London club.

With Jose Fonte leaving for China in February, James Collins set to go when his contract expires next month and doubts over the future of Winston Reid after he has been hampered by injury in recent seasons, one of Pellegrini’s priorities will surely be to bring a new centre-back to the London Stadium.

The ideal candidate may well be Tarkowski, who was brilliant for Burnley this term as they finished seventh to qualify for the Europa League, while his impressive defensive displays and his aerial ability also saw him receive his first England cap back in March.

While Pablo Zabaleta was one of West Ham’s more impressive and consistent performers this season, it is clear to see that the east London outfit need to start looking to the future with the Argentine turning 34 at the start of 2019.

The ideal long-term successor for him at right-back may well be Fredericks, who will be playing in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Saturday.

Even if the Cottagers do go up the 25-year-old, who is good defensively but also loves to get up and down the pitch, may move on as his contract is due to expire next month, meaning the Irons could get him on a free.

While West Ham have been linked with tall and strong defensive midfielders like William Carvalho and Leander Dendoncker in the past, Pellegrini may have a slightly different plan this summer.

The 64-year-old may choose to put faith in the likes of Cheikhou Kouyate and Pedro Obiang from a physical point of view in the middle of the park, and bring in a more mobile central midfielder who is able to bring the ball forward and take on opponents instead.

Reliable club insider @ExWHUemployee revealed on Twitter that the Chilean manager wants younger players with pace, and Red Bull Salzburg’s Haidara would certainly fit the bill after the 20-year-old impressed and helped his side reach the semi-finals of the Europa League.

Following on from that news about young players with pace, Pellegrini may well look to be reunited with a player he handed a Manchester City debut to.

The 64-year-old was manager when the club signed Fulham starlet Roberts, who has spent the previous two-and-a-half seasons on loan with Celtic.

The diminutive winger may well be on the move again this summer, and the 21-year-old would certainly add some pace and excitement to a West Ham frontline already containing Marko Arnautovic, Manuel Lanzini and Javier Hernandez.
