Pope squeezed out as South Australia hope to break 29-year drought

Legspinner Lloyd Pope will not get the chance to play in the Sheffield Shield final as South Australia look set to opt for an extra seamer in the hope of breaking a 29-year title-winning drought against Queensland.Captain Nathan McSweeney confirmed on Tuesday that Pope will be squeezed out of the XI against Queensland. Pope has taken 21 wickets at 25.95 in five Shield appearances this season, including match-winning bags of 6 for 74 against Victoria and 4 for 76 against Tasmania, but both of those came at Adelaide Oval.He took 3 for 84 from 26 overs last week against Queensland at Karen Rolton Oval, where the final will be played. But both sides are expecting more moisture and grass in the surface and South Australia are likely to welcome back seamer Brendan Doggett and seam-bowling allrounder Liam Scott into the line-up after both were rested last week, meaning Pope is one of the men to miss out.Related

“Lloyd’s been great for us this year and his efforts are a great reason why we’re here and playing in a Shield final,” McSweeney said. “I think Karen Rolton Oval is typically a tough ground to bowl spin on. The wicket has a little bit more moisture in it. So hence we’re going with an extra [seam] bowler. It’s a tough decision, but I think when you’re in finals you’ve got to make tough decisions. And unfortunately he’s the one that’s missing out.”Wicketkeeper Harry Nielsen is the other member of South Australia’s 14-man squad that will definitely not feature, having being left out for the last match due to Alex Carey’s return from international duty.

How a drawn final is decided

In the event the Sheffield Shield final ends in a draw, the title will be decided on first-innings bonus points which are accrued across the first 100 overs.

Batting teams earn 0.01 of a bonus point for every run scored over 200 in the initial 100 overs; bowling sides get 0.1 of a bonus point for every wicket in the first 100 overs. For example, the batting side scores 350 all out in 90 overs they earn 1.5 points and the bowling side 1 point.

Should bonus points be tied and the match drawn, SA will win the Shield given they finished top of the ladder and earned hosting rights for the final.

McSweeney would not confirm the final XI but it appears likely that one of Henry Thornton or Jordan Buckingham will be squeezed out to make room for Doggett.Thornton’s incredible late season form makes the selection decision extremely difficult. He was the Michael Bevan medallist as player of the match in the Dean Jones Trophy Final, taking 4 for 27, and has since bagged 4 for 42, 3 for 44, and 3 for 90 in the last two Shield games having been a late replacement for Nathan McAndrew when he was rested against Victoria.Buckingham, meanwhile, has taken 21 wickets at 25.76 this season and bowled well for Australia A this summer. Doggett has likewise starred for Australia A in between taking 22 scalps at 29.86 fin Shield cricket.Henry Thornton has produced strong late-season form•Getty Images

South Australia did not push for an outright win against Queensland last week to conserve energy ahead of the final. They had the Bulls 86 for 5 after piling up 614 for 7 declared but ended up needing 113.5 overs to bowl them out for 370 as the surface flattened out, with Jimmy Peirson and Jack Wildermuth posting lower-order centuries.”I think the wicket looks like there’ll be a little bit more life in it, slightly more in it for the bowlers,” McSweeney said. “But I think typically here it’s hard to take 20 wickets. There’s no doubt about that. We’ve got an extra day to try and take them now, so I think it’ll be a really good cricket wicket.”The weight of history sits heavily on the South Australian team despite it being made up of a lot of players from interstate. They have not won a Shield since 1996 and have not played in a final since 2017 or hosted one since 2016. Carey and Jake Lehmann will be the only two surviving members of the 2015-17 group to play in this week’s decider, while Conor McInerney is set to be the only other home grown South Australian in the XI.But despite the squad being made up of so many recruited players, McSweeney believes their journey together and their struggles over recent seasons in building a tight-knit team culture means a Shield triumph would mean as much to them as it would to the rusted on SACA members who have been starved of success for so long.”A lot of the boys have come from interstate,” McSweeney said. “We’ve been giving opportunity for a team that hasn’t had heaps of success, but we’ve been able to build it over the last few years as a group, and that’ll just cap it off I think.”We’ve had a fair bit of change, but I think the core group of players have been here for a long time now, and we’re slowly starting to see the success from all the hard work, and that’s paying off now. It’ll mean so much and hopefully we can get it done.”South Australia squad: Nathan McSweeney (capt), Jordan Buckingham, Alex Carey, Brendan Doggett, Henry Hunt, Jake Lehmann, Ben Manenti, Nathan McAndrew, Conor McInerney, Harry Nielsen, Lloyd Pope, Jason Sangha, Liam Scott, Henry Thornton

Grealish-esque signing: Everton ready late move for "special" £50m star

What a sensational start it was for Jack Grealish as an Everton player. The Toffees’ first professional game at their state-of-the-art new ground, the Hill Dickinson Stadium, was memorable thanks to a 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion.

Grealish made all the difference for David Moyes’ side, assisting both of the goals to help secure the three points for his new club, including a fizzing left-footed cross to pick out Illiman Ndiaye for the opener.

Grealish could prove to be one of Everton’s best pieces of business in the transfer market this summer, and more signings might yet join him.

Everton plotting late move for £50m addition

The Toffees were able to secure the signing of Tyler Dibling from Southampton in the last couple of days. The Saints academy graduate made the move to Merseyside for a fee in the region of £40m, including add-ons.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, he might not be the last addition made by Moyes this summer. According to a report from TBR Football, Everton are one of the sides in the race to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher.

They are said to be one of the sides who could ‘make a late attempt’ to bring the former Chelsea star to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

However, this will not be a straightforward battle. Gallagher is wanted by five other Premier League clubs, including Crystal Palace, where he was once on loan, and Manchester United.

As for a price if he was to make a permanent move, it was revealed in July that the England star is available for £50m.

Why Gallagher would be a good signing

If the Toffees were to acquire the services of Gallagher before Monday’s deadline, they would be bringing a “special” midfielder to the club, as Statman Dave described him. He has played in the top flight for Chelsea, his boyhood club, as well as loan spells at Palace and West Brom.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

At just 25 years of age, Gallagher is an incredibly experienced player. He has played 136 times in the top flight of England, scoring 18 times and assisting 13. He has also shown great versatility, playing mainly as an eight but also as a defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder and out wide on the right.

Of course, the Cobham graduate has spent the past 12 months in Spain playing for Diego Simeone’s Atleti. He made 52 appearances last term for the club, chipping in with ten goals and assists. That included a strike against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

This potential Everton move for Gallagher is certainly Grealish-esque, in a couple of ways. Firstly, the former Aston Villa star is an England international just like Gallagher, with the pair having played together five times for the Three Lions, as per Transfermarkt.

On top of that, they have both departed some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Grealish switched to Merseyside from Manchester City on a loan deal that could turn permanent, and, of course, Gallagher will be departing the Spanish capital and Atleti to join Moyes’ side.

If Gallagher can have anything like the sort of impact Grealish has already had for Everton, he will be well on his way to becoming a successful addition.

As per Sofascore, Grealish created three chances and won six duels on his home debut, setting up both his side’s goals.

Gallagher will bring tenacity off the ball and a goal threat in possession. The stats from his two Premier League seasons with Chelsea highlight just that, with the defender averaging 3.8 and 3.6 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes in each of the respective seasons, and had an expected goal involvement tally of 0.23xGI and 0.22xGI each game, respectively.

It is easy to see how this move could be similar to that of Grealish. The 25-year-old would also be leaving one of Europe’s biggest clubs for the Blue half of Merseyside, and is looking to secure his England place in a World Cup year.

For both club and player, this could be a fantastic move ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.

Hemang Badani to take over as Delhi Capitals head coach

Former India batter Venugopal Rao will be their new director of cricket

Nagraj Gollapudi17-Oct-20246:12

Making sense of the musical chairs in DC’s ownership structure

Former India batter Hemang Badani will take over as the new head coach at Delhi Capitals (DC) for IPL 2025. Along with Badani, DC have also appointed former India batter Venugopal Rao as the director of cricket. While Badani replaces Ricky Ponting, who amicably parted ways recently after seven seasons as head coach, Rao takes over the role performed in the past few years by former India captain Sourav Ganguly. Both appointments are part of the decision taken by the DC ownership to overhaul the coaching staff and the overall running structure of the franchise which has never won the IPL. The franchise has also decided not to renew the contract with Pravin Amre, who served as assistant coach and talent scout since 2014.”With the mega auction around the corner, my job, in collaboration with the rest of our coaching staff, is cut out,” Badani said in a franchise release. “I can’t wait to get started.”ESPNcricinfo has learnt the recruitment drive to bolster the coaching bench will continue with more assistant coaches and mentor to be appointed. As part of the restructuring, the co-owners of DC – the GMR Group and JSW Sports – will swap the operational leadership roles every two years for their teams in the IPL and the WPL; it means the GMR Group will take over the men’s team for the next two seasons and JSW Sports the women’s team for 2025 and 2026. Consequently, Ganguly will take over as director of cricket in the WPL for the next two seasons. Ganguly will switch back to the IPL from 2027 when JSW Sports will be back in charge. In a media statement on Thursday, the franchise said “key decisions like auctions, captaincy, player release and retentions of both teams will be made by the Delhi Capitals’ board, and will be decided mutually by senior leadership of both groups.”Why Hemang Badani?
While the appointment of Badani, who played four Tests and 40 ODIs, is expected to arouse curiosity, the former Tamil Nadu captain has been a successful coach in the domestic T20 circuit. After being part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squads in the initial few years, Badani was the head coach at Chepauk Super Gillies, who have won four TNPL titles, one of which was shared. With them, Badani played a key role in the development of young players like R Sai Kishore, the current Tamil Nadu captain. That experience played a role in Badani joining the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) coaching staff in IPL 2022. He also has coaching experience in overseas T20 leagues: with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in 2023, when they won the inaugural SA20 title, and with Jaffna Kings, who won the most recent season of the Lanka Premier League. He was the head coach at Dubai Capitals (also owned by GMR Group) who finished runners-up in the ILT20 this January.Rao, who played 16 ODIs between 2005 and 2006, was part of Deccan Chargers’ IPL – winning squad in 2009 and has also been part of Dubai Capitals, first as mentor in the inaugural season and then as director of cricket.

'More the merrier' for Sarah Glenn as England thrive with four-spin attack

England ring changes with T20 World Cup in mind, and land statement victory

Sarah Glenn appreciates that she is part of a “really special” time for England spinners. Her legspin yielded a triple-wicket over in a haul of 3 for 16 as England romped to a 59-run victory over New Zealand in the first of five T20Is which are key to both sides’ preparation for the World Cup in October. The haul came as part of an enviable four-pronged spin attack which took seven of the nine wickets to fall at Southampton. Off-spinner Charlie Dean took 2 for 28 while world No. 1 Sophie Ecclestone and Linsey Smith – playing her 12th T20I but only her third since June 2019 – took one wicket each.”The more the merrier, I love it,” Glenn said. “Linsey has just been consistently performing for a really long period of time now, especially in the powerplay, at the death, and we all just bring something so different and I just felt it was really effective, so it was nice to see us all come together.”With England captain Heather Knight saying on match eve that her side wouldn’t be afraid to experiment during this series as they look to finalise their squad for the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in October, Glenn said she felt comfortable in a spin-heavy side.”It doesn’t really change much,” Glenn added. “You’ve just got an extra opinion, which is actually quite nice. If there’s a couple of spinners that might be struggling or anything like that, or you just want some advice, you’ve just got more people to speak to, and we obviously all bring something different. If anything, it’s just more of a strength. We’ve got more people to talk to who might be going through something I’m going through out there, so I think it’s really good.”It’s five games as well, so we’ve got plenty of time to practice those things, but also against a top-quality team, who will put us under the pump, so I think it’s really good prep.”Related

Wyatt powers England to biggest T20I win over New Zealand

Glenn’s three wickets included the vastly experienced batters Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine, upon whom New Zealand rely heavily. Bates top-scored for the White Ferns with 43, but Devine fell for for a duck that she described at the post-match presentation as “horrendous”. In her absence, Jess Kerr was their second-highest scorer on 38 batting at No. 8 as they attempted to chase down a lofty target of 198, after Danni Wyatt’s 76 and Nat Sciver-Brunt’s 47 had led England to 197 for 3.England’s margin of victory was their highest in T20Is against New Zealand and could have been even greater were it not for a rash of dropped catches and misfields. But, with the hosts in a buoyant mood, Glenn was confident they could rectify their fielding errors.”Some of them, we made it into a good effort to get there and there were quite a few dives as well,” she said. “There were some simpler catches put down, but I think the fact that we’re getting in powerful positions to give ourselves even a chance of catching those balls is really good for us. If we just keep focusing on that and our intent, it’ll put us in good situations.”England’s spin-heavy line-up required the omission of their strike seamer, Lauren Bell, with the fast-bowling duties instead shared between two allrounders who have only recently made a return to full-time bowling: Sciver-Brunt, whose workload has been managed all summer as she recovers from a knee problem. and the left-armer Freya Kemp, who suffered a back stress fracture on England’s trip to the Caribbean at the end of 2022.In her second England appearance of the summer, Kemp made an unbeaten 26 from 17 balls batting at No. 4 and bowled her full allocation for figures of 4-0-30-1. She bowled during England’s tour of India last December but, after a flare-up, reverted to a batting role for England A in New Zealand earlier this year, against Pakistan in May and in regional cricket.Bates admitted that, despite best-laid plans, New Zealand had been bamboozled by England’s spinners. But she had faith in her side to counter-attack during this series, which moves to Hove on Tuesday.”They’ve got such a clear game-plan,” Bates said. “The powerplay, they use their swing and pace and then Ecclestone, Glenn, Dean come on and really squeeze you and we’ve talked about that, but it’s about executing in the middle. I think today we got ahead of the game slightly in the powerplay and that makes playing the spinners easy. But when you need boundaries they can bowl at the stumps and defend. So we’ve got to be brave to take them on, whether that’s behind the wicket or in front of the wicket and just keep being aggressive.”They’ve probably got one of the best spinning attacks in the world, Ecclestone leading from the front, and when you’ve got an off-spinner, a leg-spinner – Glenny, and Linsey they added today, there’s some world-class players so they’re obviously tough through the middle. If we can keep taking the game on and keep backing our shots, I think we are going to be able to get them in trouble at some point in the series.”

More exciting than Mbeumo: Man Utd in talks to sign "very special" talent

Manchester United are set for a huge summer transfer window if they are to rise up the table and be a success in the Premier League throughout 2025/26.

The Red Devils finished in a measly 15th position last time around, registering their lowest points tally and finish since the division formed back in 1992.

Ruben Amorim was unable to work his magic after being appointed back in November, but this window presents him with the chance to make his desired changes at Old Trafford.

Manchester United manager RubenAmorimbefore the match

The likes of Jonny Evans, Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof will all depart at the end of the month, raising key funds in their pursuit of landing key targets.

With the window reopening on Monday, it allows the club to add to the signing of Matheus Cunha, with multiple additions needed if they are to have any chance of pushing for European football.

The latest on United’s hunt for new additions

All areas of the pitch are expected to be subject to investment as the hierarchy looks to hand Amorim with the tools he needs to be a success at Theatre of Dreams.

Hugo Ekitiké, Richard Rios and Ronald Araujo are just three names thrown into the mix over recent months, but as of yet, no deals have yet been agreed for any of the aforementioned talents.

However, serious moves have been made to land Copenhagen star Rooney Bardghji before the end of the transfer window, that’s according to GIVEMESPORT’s latest update.

They claim that the Red Devils have held talks with the Danish side over a move for the 19-year-old, who’s previously scored against United in the Champions League.

It also states that he’s seen as one of Europe’s most promising stars, but has endured somewhat of a dismal spell with injuries, only making six appearances in 2024/25.

Why United’s latest target would be a more exciting signing than Mbeumo

Over recent weeks, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo has been the most likely star to make the move to join United and further aid Amorim’s attempts in the final third.

Brentford's BryanMbeumoreacts

The Cameroonian has starred in the Premier League throughout 2024/25, scoring 20 times in his 38 appearances, undoubtedly being the shining light in the Bees’ side.

Such a record has led to the Red Devils’ keen interest, even making a £55m bid for the attacker, but it was swiftly rejected with a £70m price tag mooted.

They face huge competition from Tottenham Hotspur for his signature this window, with the Lilywhites potentially having the edge given the appointment of his former boss, Thomas Frank.

However, given the interest from elsewhere, it’s led to a move for Bardghji, with the Swedish youngster a more exciting and upcoming talent than Mbeumo, with Amorim needing to pursue a move for his signature.

FC Copenhagen midfielderRoony Bardghji.

The teenager, who’s been labelled “very special” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, hasn’t had the opportunity to showcase his talents this campaign, but has previously demonstrated the elite-level talent at his disposal.

In the 2023/24 campaign, he thrived in the Champions League, completing 90% of the passes he attempted and creating 1.9 chances per 90 – highlighting his ability to provide for teammates in attacking areas.

He also managed to complete 3.8 dribbles per 90, at a completion rate of 75%, posing a real threat with the ball at his feet and starring in a competition Mbeumo has yet to be in his career.

Bardghji’s effort against United in such a period is evidence of the brilliance he’s able to produce when featuring on the pitch, having the potential to explode into a top-level talent when injury-free.

Given his tender age, he has bags of time to reach his full potential and build on the impressive start he’s made to his professional career at Copenhagen.

Should he move to United, he would hand Amorim a new dimension, certainly offering a more exciting signing than the Brentford star, given the levels he’s produced and the room he still has to grow over the next few years.

Slot's own Firmino: Liverpool in talks for "monster" £84m Isak alternative

Liverpool’s title success may have been unexpected at the start of the campaign, but it highlights the excellent work done by Arne Slot in his first year at the helm.

The Dutchman has created a seamless transition after taking the reins from the departing Jürgen Klopp, claiming the club’s second-ever Premier League title.

Whilst they’ve failed to win any of their last three outings after claiming the trophy, the hard work in the early stages has allowed them to enjoy the last few weeks of the season.

Liverpool manager ArneSlot

However, with just one game left in 2024/25, attention will now undoubtedly switch towards the transfer market, with key additions needed in multiple areas to aid the manager in replicating the success.

The manager has already wasted no time in strengthening his squad, with Jeremie Frimpong edging ever closer to a switch to Anfield, potentially being joined by various other stars in the coming months.

The latest on Liverpool’s hunt for new signings

Alexander Isak has been a name constantly touted with a switch to Liverpool this summer, understandably so given his record of 23 goals in 33 league outings this campaign.

However, such a player comes at a premium, with Eddie Howe’s side demanding a fee in the region of £150m to part ways with their star attacker during the off-season.

Such a figure could lead the hierarchy to different targets ahead of the summer, with work already being done to land RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, according to DAVEOCKOP.

The report states that the Reds have been in talks with the Bundesliga outfit over a move for the Slovenian international, who currently has a £84m release clause in his contract.

It also claims that the 21-year-old would be open to a move to Merseyside, but no formal approach has yet been made despite the keen interest in his signature.

Why Liverpool’s £84m target could be Slot’s own Firmino

Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino was an unknown quantity to many Liverpool supporters before his switch from Hoffenheim back in 2015, but it didn’t take long for him to adhere himself to the fanbase.

The Reds forked out £28m for his services, a fee that proved to be a bargain given his stint at Anfield, registering over 100 goals in his 362 appearances.

He often operated in a false nine position, with his best campaign coming in 2017/18, when he registered 27 goals and 16 assists in his 54 appearances across all competitions.

However, he departed in the summer of 2023 on a free transfer, joining Saudi side Al Ahli, with the Reds desperately missing a centre-forward of his calibre since his move away from Merseyside.

That could all be about to change this window, with Slot able to replicate such a move if they land the services of Sesko – following suit of Firmino in joining the club from a Bundesliga outfit.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskocelebrates

If he manages to get anywhere near close to the levels produced by the Brazilian for the Reds, he would be one hell of an addition, already showcasing his talents despite his tender age with Leipzig this campaign.

The 21-year-old, who’s been labelled a “monster” by talent scout Antonio Mango, has registered 21 goals in all competitions this season, with four of which coming in the Champions League – highlighting his ability to thrive at the top level.

His underlying stats have been just as impressive, registering 1.2 shots on target per 90 and a dribble success rate of 55%, handing Slot an excellent all-round option in the final third.

Sesko has also won 57% of the aerial duels he’s entered, handing the side the focal point they’ve often lacked despite their success throughout 2024/25.

It’s likely that the club would be able to negotiate a deal below his £84m clause, with the youngster having all the tools to develop further and become a leading player for the side for many years to come.

If the Reds are to take the next step under Slot and maintain their first-season success, additions will need to be perfect, with the Slovenian offering the manager a sensational option in forward areas.

He's open to move: Man Utd now battling Arsenal to sign "prolific" PSG ace

With Champions League qualification still up for grabs courtesy of the Europa League, Manchester United have now reportedly joined the race to sign a Paris Saint-Germain star this summer.

Man Utd set for crucial Europa League final

After spending the current campaign closer to the relegation zone than the Premier League title, the thought of Manchester United qualifying for the Champions League seems absurd. But the Europa League has offered them more than just a slither of hope. By defeating Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao, the Red Devils will have a place among Europe’s elite next season, having won the Europa League unbeaten this season.

Saving one of their best performances for the semi-final stage, Manchester United thrashed Athletic Bilbao 7-1 on aggregate to book their place in the final, leaving Ruben Amorim hopeful that a disastrous debut campaign could yet end with silverware.

That said, the former Sporting Club boss is well aware that even if his side win the Europa League, there’s still plenty of work to be done. He told reporters in the build-up to the semi-final: “For me, in that moment and you look at Premier League, we are the worst team since I arrived in terms of results.

“That is my idea. In the end of the season, we can be the worst team in Premier League history with a European title. So we will not change anything. We know that this season was disappointing.”

With the transfer window now approaching, that aforementioned improvement could start as soon as this summer and with the potential arrival of a much-needed attacking star. Looking to solve their goalscoring problem once and for all, the Red Devils have reportedly turned their attention towards a Champions League finalist.

Man Utd join race for PSG striker Goncalo Ramos

According to Caught Offside, Manchester United are now desperate to sign a striker, with PSG’s Goncalo Ramos on the radar in an attempt to end their goalscoring woes. Joining Arsenal, Aston Villa and others in the race to sign the PSG forward, those at Old Trafford could certainly do with the boost of Champions League qualification.

Whilst Ramos is not the first-choice striker under Luis Enrique, he has still had his moments of importance this season – scoring 15 goals in all competitions. Now, at 23 years old, the Portugal international is open to looking elsewhere for game time and towards the Premier League. And although he hasn’t been deemed good enough for Enrique at times, Ramos could provide Amorim with the perfect upgrade at Manchester United.

A player dubbed “prolific” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig in March, Ramos’ record of seven goals in 11 Ligue 1 starts proves that he’s ready for a permanent starting role elsewhere. In comparison to Rasmus Hojlund, the PSG forward would offer Amorim an instant improvement.
