Test failures a worry, but Tamim expects 'very, very good' Bangladesh ODI team if things go to plan

“If Mehidy Hasan gets better with the bat, him and Shakib Al Hasan can give a huge boost to the ODI side”

Mohammad Isam26-Apr-2022Some way through our conversation, Tamim Iqbal says something he seems he has been trying to find a way to say for a while: that he feels bad that Bangladesh’s ODI series win in South Africa was largely unacknowledged in their country. No need for a ticker-tape parade in Dhaka, but a bit more attention for the new match-winners who contributed to the first series win in a country where they hadn’t won anything bar a game against West Indies in the 2007 T20 World Cup.The condensed nature of cricket tours these days meant that the Tests came soon after the ODIs, and Bangladesh lost both of them, competing hard for long periods but then being bowled out for 53 in Durban and 80 in Gqeberha in the last innings in the two Tests, respectively. The landmark wins from the previous two weeks were lost in the rubble somewhere.”I think winning an ODI series in South Africa’s backyard was big for us. It is one of our best achievements till now, but in my heart, I also feel sad,” Tamim told ESPNcricinfo. “We, as a nation, celebrate small things. Because of how the Test series went, this ODI series achievement faded away.Related

“I don’t feel bad for myself, Shakib [Al Hasan] or Mushfiq [Mushfiqur Rahim]. I feel bad for the likes of [Mehidy Hasan] Miraz, Yasir [Ali], Taskin [Ahmed] and Shoriful [Islam]. They made huge contributions in the ODI series. It should have been celebrated a lot more.”We have known all through that they have huge potential, so if they improve upon what they have started to do now, there’ll be nothing like it. Taskin, Shoriful and Litton [Das] are contributing regularly. Yasir is very new, but he played a fantastic knock in the first ODI. If they keep doing it, we will become a very, very good ODI team.”But the conversation in Bangladesh turned quickly to how the Test batters had no answers to Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer, South Africa’s spinners who did the most damage in the Tests. But a cricket team is only as good as what it achieves.”If you consider our history in South Africa before this tour, we used to get hammered in all formats in that country,” Tamim said. “This time, we won the ODI series, we competed in the first Test, but we were not up to the mark in the second. We could have played much better.”I didn’t play the first Test but when I was watching from the dressing room, I couldn’t say who would win the Test in the first four days. Both the teams competed hard. We had a really bad last day, which handed the result to South Africa.”

Bangladesh were bowled out for 53 and 80 in the Tests in South Africa•AFP/Getty ImagesAll said, Bangladesh’s twin fourth-innings collapses is a cause for worry.”I am someone who doesn’t give excuses. If it was my fault, I will readily admit that it was my fault,” Tamim said.”Saying that, you have to understand that Bangladesh batted in the most difficult times in both Tests in South Africa. We were basically playing a day-night Test in the second innings of both games. We had to survive for 25-30 overs. We couldn’t score runs. The wicket was also difficult.”Still, we couldn’t find other ways to score runs or survive. I am sure in the coming days, we will have this kind of situation again. We have to react better as a team. We have to play better in this situation, find out ways to score runs or survive.”However, the picture is rosier in the ODI side. Tamim leads a tight unit that has arrived at a good balance between batters, bowlers and allrounders. It has taken time, but the evolution has happened, Tamim said, adding that ODI-like success is needed in Tests – like the win against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui.”Not just at the international level, our most competitive domestic competition is the Dhaka Premier League. It is a one-day tournament,” Tamim explained. “It has been taking place for not just 10-15 years, but 35 years, or even more. We were raised in this competitive one-day environment.”Secondly, we have tasted a lot of success in ODIs. It is helping improve the team. There’s a lot of competition for places. We don’t have similar kind of success in Tests or T20Is. What happened in Mount Maunganui, if this thing starts to repeat, then players will understand that we have to get better in Tests. I think we have to take a bigger step in Tests than in the other formats.”

Tamim on offspinner Mehidy: “I think he is one of our best ODI players. He is very under-rated as a cricketer”•AFP/Getty ImagesBangladesh used their usual ODI blueprint to find success in the first and third ODIs in South Africa. They made two big starts when Tamim and Litton added 95 and 127 respectively. These were Bangladesh’s highest opening stands in South Africa in all formats.”If we start a series well, whether batting or bowling, it automatically sets the tone for us,” Tamim said. “This has always been the case with Bangladesh. The 95-run stand gave us a lot of confidence. Before going to Centurion and Johannesburg, you hear things about the bounce. The pitch does this, the pitch does that. When you apply yourself and put the team in a decent position, the dressing room starts to believe that if these two are doing it, so can we.”But he admitted that it was the bowlers who won Bangladesh both matches, while the improved fielding during the ODI series helped the cause.”I thought our bowlers won us the ODI series,” Tamim said. “We put up a good score in the first game. Shakib played a very good innings. Yasir played well. Litton and I did something. But our bowling was the main game-changer. In the third game, it was again the bowlers who kept them tied up at 150-odd [154].”I have always said that our fielding needs a lot of improvement. We may have dropped one or two catches, but I thought we actually fielded really well in South Africa. Good fielding lifts everyone.”

“It takes a very big heart to do what Shakib did. I thanked him after the game.”Tamim acknowledges Shakib Al Hasan playing the third ODI in South Africa despite a family crisis back home

What also lifted the team and the captain was the way Mehidy responded to critical situations. When he was smacked around in the first ODI, he came back with a four-wicket haul that won Bangladesh the match. His improved batting and fielding have also been noticeable.”I think Miraz is one of our best ODI players. He is very under-rated as a cricketer,” Tamim said. “I think he is the third- or fourth-ranked [eighth] bowler in the world. Nobody speaks about it. Not only his performance, but [also] the energy he brings to the field [with] the never-say-die attitude that he has.”He is a different character. He will say things that people won’t necessarily take seriously, but that’s the kind of character you want in the team. He has improved as a batter, but if he gets better, him and Shakib give a huge boost to the team.”Needless to say, Shakib’s presence, and his performances, helped. He took down the South African attack in the first ODI, and just the fact that he was around for the third ODI, despite a crisis in his family back home, was a big inspiration to the team.”The way Shakib batted [in the first ODI] gave positive vibes,” Tamim said. “He took on the South African bowlers seven overs earlier than anyone imagined. I said at the time that it takes a very big heart to do what he did [by playing the third ODI]. I thanked him after the game. But just because he has done it, not everyone has to do it. If someone’s loved ones are sick, it is absolutely fine for him to go take care of them. I will support them fully.”There was a poignant moment at the end of the third ODI. Shakib and Tamim were at the crease to finish the job. They had utterly dominated South Africa, who have for two decades annihilated them at home. But, now, Bangladesh were about to win the ODI series. When the moment arrived, Shakib scored the winning runs, with Tamim having played a captain’s knock at the other end.”As we were winding down, we were talking about what needed to be done,” Tamim recalled. “I remember what I told him when the winning runs were hit. I told that this is one of our biggest achievements as a team. I said that and I hugged him.”

'Shellshocked' Stokes hails Head for 'knocking the wind' out of England

Ben Stokes, England’s captain, admitted he and his team had been left “shellshocked” by Travis Head’s stunning 69-ball century, as Australia transcended the chaos of the first three innings of the first Ashes Test at Perth to romp to victory by eight wickets and with three whole days to spare.Head left the field to a standing ovation after his stunning knock of 123 from 83 balls had ripped the momentum away from an England team that seemed to have the contest in their grasp when they went to the second-day lunch break on 65 for 1, with a lead of 99 and nine wickets in hand. But a calamitous collapse of 4 for 11 in 19 balls, initiated by a fine spell from Scott Boland, turned the contest back in Australia’s favour. Though England’s lower-order rallied to set the hosts 205 for victory – the highest innings total of the game – Head’s promotion to the top of the order, in the absence of the injured Usman Khawaja, proved a blessing in disguise as he came out swinging, to blaze Australia to their target in a mere 28.2 overs. It was an example of England being comprehensively beaten at their own hard-hitting game, and Stokes was in awe of Australia’s matchwinner at the post-match presentations.”We’re a little bit shellshocked there,” Stokes told the host broadcaster. “That innings from Travis Head was pretty phenomenal. It’s quite raw, quite fresh at the moment but, geez, that was some knock. It’s knocked the wind out of us.”Asked if he regretted England’s approach to their own second innings – in particular a trio of big shots from Ollie Pope, Harry Brook and Joe Root in the midst of that post-lunch collapse – Stokes insisted that England’s approach had not been the wrong one, as Head’s own success demonstrated, but their execution had been lacking.”If you look at the way the game eked out, the guys who seemed to have success out there with bat in hand were the guys who were really brave and took the game on,” Stokes said. “Anyone who tried to stay around there and try and occupy the crease didn’t really seem to have too much success.Related

“On wickets like this, you never think you’ve got enough, so if you find yourself in a position where you’re the guy who’s managed to get in, try and give yourself the best chance of going on. There was a lot of assistance there when the bowlers put the ball in the right areas. The guys who were brave enough to knock the bowlers off their lengths seem to find success on that.”Ultimately, however, England were blown away by Head’s extraordinary onslaught. Asked what more he could have done to contain such an aggressive innings, Stokes said: “We tried three or four different plans at him. When he was going like a train, those plans can change quite quickly, because those runs were coming down quickly.”I’ve seen Travis play a lot of knocks like that, whether it be in Test cricket or white-ball cricket. He’s very hard to stop.”Because of the two-day finish, England now have close to a fortnight to prepare for the day-night Test in Brisbane, beginning on December 4. Stokes admitted that his team would have to lick their wounds after such a bruising defeat, but said that the performance of his five-man pace attack in the first innings was proof that there will be some positives to take into the rest of the series.”The way in which we bowled yesterday was simply phenomenal,” Stokes said. “A lot happened on day one, 19 wickets fell, so it was a good day for the bowlers.”This is a very tough one to get the series going when we felt we were in control of the game, and we were coming out there to bowl in that fourth innings. We’ve got four more games here.”We’ll obviously let this sink in. Obviously it hurts extremely, but we got to get our heads round and move on to Brisbane, and then hit the ground running there.”

Multan Sultans owner decides not to renew ownership of PSL franchise

Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen has announced he will not renew his ownership of the PSL franchise. In a statement on social media, Tareen said he was bidding farewell to the franchise he has owned for seven years. In doing so he appeared to take a parting shot at PSL management, saying he would “rather lose the team standing on my feet than run it from my knees”. That was in keeping with an ongoing dispute with the league, as well as hinting at differences that seem to have built up with the other owners”Being part of this team has been one of the greatest honours of my life,” Tareen’s statement said. “Despite the financial losses year on year, I never once thought about walking away. The Sultans have always meant more to me than just numbers. And I have always been willing to go as far as needed to protect it.”The statement, posted soon after the five other franchises formally confirmed that they had decided to renew ownership of their respective teams, throws a spanner into the works of the 11th edition of the PSL. The tournament is already set to expand to eight teams, which means two new owners. If the PSL and Tareen fail to strike a deal, as now seems increasingly inevitable, the PCB will have to hunt for a third.Tareen’s statement represents the low point of a relationship that has been deteriorating for the best part of a year. During this time, Tareen has stepped up his criticism of the PSL management, which he accused of a lack of transparency and vision.

In response, the PCB sent a legal notice that accused him of being non-compliant with his ownership contract, and demanded a retraction and public apology. Tareen responded with a sarcastic “apology” video which ended with him tearing up the notice they had sent.In the following weeks, Tareen found himself increasingly locked out of discussions in the build-up to the 11th season. He was the only owner not to receive a renewal offer letter. Tareen said last week that Sultans had received no response to any communication from either the PCB chairman or the PSL management, threatening to take legal action.ESPNcricinfo understands that the PCB sent Tareen an email earlier this week, asking him to apologise and delete all social posts critical of the PSL and its management, representing the continuing impasse that existed between the two partiesWhen Sultans had launched as the newest franchise in 2018, it was initially owned by Schon Group, who withdrew after year later. After that, Alamgir Tareen, Ali’s uncle, became majority owner of the franchise alongside as Sultans won the PSL in 2020, and reached the final on four consecutive occasions. After Alamgir died in 2022, Ali rose to become sole owner of the franchise.”Please know that this team has always been much more than its owner,” Tareen’s statement concluded. “It belongs to you and to South Punjab. So whoever takes control of the Sultans next, please keep supporting them with the same passion. You can count on me to be in the stands supporting them too.”ESPNcricinfo has approached the PCB for comment.

Slot's new Diaz: Liverpool favourites to sign "world-class" £65m star

Arne Slot will surely be under more intense pressure in the Liverpool hot seat if he cannot turn around his side’s disastrous Premier League form after the international break concludes.

Last season, the Merseyside giants romped home to the title, with a bumper 25 wins secured, having also only lost a meagre four games all campaign long.

Now, however, it’s a grim five defeats on the menu from 11 outings, with former Reds attacker Peter Crouch even stating that there must be “some serious question marks” as to whether the ex-Feyenoord boss should remain in the Anfield post for the long term, if the losses continue to stack up.

He does have the January transfer window on his side to try and arrest this slide, though, as Liverpool prepares to splash the big bucks again…

Where Liverpool could strengthen in 2026

The disappointing Reds are now eight points adrift of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League, which has led many pundits to state that the reigning champions are in a crisis at the moment.

Still, uprooting to Anfield will be seen as an attractive next career step for many promising talents around the world.

One target includes AZ Alkmaar star Kees Smit, as rumours persist that the £22.5m-rated midfielder is on their agenda.

Alongside Smit, Liverpool are also reportedly still keen on adding Marc Guehi to their ranks in January, after a failed summer move, as Crystal Palace brace for Liverpool to reignite a deal, despite their current bruised status.

Palace are not the only Premier League club that could be on the receiving end of Liverpool attempting to spend big to turn around their dismal fortunes, however, with TEAMtalk revealing – via their sources – that Slot’s men are favourites to land AFC Bournemouth superstar Antoine Semenyo, despite intense interest also popping up from Tottenham Hotspur.

The report goes on to state that a £65m release clause will be activated when the window opens, which has alerted both Liverpool and Thomas Frank’s outfit, with the Reds ready to meet that price to win themselves an explosive, Premier League-proven forward.

Liverpool desperately need some deadly firepower, having been burnt by deals for Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak in the summer, as Slot and Co’s excessive spending – £415m to be exact – looks very rash.

Semenyo could well offer up some much-needed entertainment; therefore, with the Ghanaian also going down as Slot’s new Luis Diaz if a deal is secured, who was a departure in the summer, now overloaded with regret.

How Semenyo compares to Diaz

Diaz leaving Liverpool has certainly hurt the Reds more than they might have initially anticipated.

Of course, the lavish spending in the summer with Isak and Wirtz coming through the door was meant to see in the start of a new-look Liverpool attack, with Diaz discarded to Bayern Munich in the process.

Unfortunately, with the aforementioned pair regularly fluffing their lines and the revitalised Colombian already sitting pretty on 11 goals and five assists from 17 games in Bavaria, it does feel as if Liverpool have dropped a clanger getting rid of an attacker once branded as “unpredictable” and hard to contain at his Premier League best by ex-Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman.

Diaz blew hot and cold on English shores, hence his exit and Seaman’s unpredictable assessment, as 29 Premier League goals fell into his lap at Anfield. Semenyo is only three short of that amount right now for the Cherries, as another gung-ho, direct talent emerges that can wreak havoc at the peak of his powers.

Liverpool saw first-hand how blistering their £65m target can be at full pelt right at the start of the season when powering home that high-energy equaliser, with his Cherries teammate in Marcus Tavernier stating that he is “unplayable” when operating at his devastating best.

Thankfully, the goals and assists have followed in abundance, away from just simply bombing forward with pace to burn, with six goals and three assists in Premier League action alone this campaign, even resulting in Chris Waddle’s claiming that he’s currently “the best winger in the country.”

The similarities don’t just stop with their comparable styles, though, with both attacking stars in question also capable of being adaptable and malleable when needed, as seen in Semenyo swapping between left wing and right wing duties regularly for Andoni Iraola’s men.

Diaz would also happily oblige in this regard at Anfield, with eight goals even coming his way from a centre-forward spot for his ex-employers.

Semenyo will, further, hope he can replicate Diaz’s career at Anfield even more closely in lifting a Premier League title down the line, past the current slump in form.

Liverpool star is "the best finisher in the PL" and he's not even a forward

Liverpool must start utilising this midfielder’s dynamic attacking qualities more often.

Prince says 'all possibilities open' as SA deal with problem of plenty in batting order

On the evidence of how they lined up at Arundel, Mulder will bat at No. 3, Stubbs at five and Bedingham six with de Zorzi likely to sit out

Firdose Moonda05-Jun-2025As steady drizzle and fierce wind gusts whipped through Arundel, South Africa made their way from Portsmouth in hopes of continuing their warm-up match against Zimbabwe only to see the best-laid plans go awry. Two of the three days have been lost to the weather and if any play is possible on the fourth, it will likely be used to get miles in the bowlers’ legs. That means the batters will have to make do with their work from day two and upcoming net sessions and for batting coach Ashwell Prince, that should be enough.”We trust the things that we’ve been doing. It’s not as if you’ve got an exam coming up and all of a sudden, you’ve got to cram all these things in, or cram in some new things that you might not have thought of before,” Prince told the media present at the venue. “We trust what we’ve done in the past. It’s worked for us. We’ve deserved the opportunity to have a crack at it in this final.”And this time, that statement applies as much to their batters as it does to their bowlers, who are often credited with being the match-winners. Across 12 Tests, South Africa scored 14 hundreds from nine different players. Of those, six scored a hundred for the first time in Tests. It’s a sign of a maturing line-up that can complement an attacking seam contingent and balance out a team that is sometimes seen as over-reliant on pace.Related

Boucher: 'Winning WTC final could be the turnaround for Test cricket in South Africa'

Arundel rain leaves South Africa banking on pre-tour preparation ahead of WTC final

WTC winners to get USD 3.6 million in prize money

In green Arundel, Zimbabwe quietly help neighbours SA tune up for their biggest Test

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo ahead of the WTC final, former captain Graeme Smith, whose full interview will be published later this week, identified a more settled top six as one of the key reasons for South Africa’s qualification to the final. “The part that they got right in the recent run was finding some performance from the batters,” he said. “There’s always been options with the ball and now we’ve seen a little bit more consistency coming from the batting front. What you need to be successful in Tests is a top six that can perform consistently.”In this squad, South Africa have eight batting options which gives them a problem of plenty, as they debate two spots: No. 3 and one spot lower down – either No. 6 or 7. Head coach Shukri Conrad has confirmed that Aiden Markram will open with Ryan Rickelton which means one of Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs and Wiaan Mulder will bat at No. 3 while that same trio along with David Bedingham are in line for the No. 6 spot. On the evidence of how they lined up at Arundel, Mulder will bat at No. 3, Stubbs at five and Bedingham six with de Zorzi likely to sit out.Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder got some game-time during the warm-up•ICC via Getty ImagesOne concern with that set-up is that Mulder is also expected to have a job to do with the ball, especially when it’s swinging, and could end up with a substantial workload. That could prompt Conrad to move Mulder down the order, and shift Stubbs back up – as was initially the case last year – but not everyone thinks that’s a good idea. Zimbabwe, who bowled to South Africa for 79 overs on Wednesday, were particularly impressed by Stubbs’, who Sean Williams told ESPNcricinfo looks like he should stay at No. 5 as “he will score runs for them from there.”Prince would not be drawn into any confirmations. “At the moment, the best way to prepare for us as a squad is to keep all possibilities open,” he said. “We don’t know what the surface is going to look like when we get there. Should it be a case where he’s required to do that job, we want to make sure that he’s at least had some sort of preparation but we don’t know whether he’s going to be required to do that, because we haven’t had a look at the surface. We’ll only be able to tell when we get there.”Mulder is one of the players who has had scant game time in the lead-up to the final. He only played one match at the IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad, where was used as an impact substitute and bowled one over. South Africa will be eager to see him bowl a few more if conditions allow for it on Friday. What they’ve seen from a batting perspective is his confidence in taking on the short ball early on, which Williams also identified as a strength, and solid defences. With Mulder high in the line-up and Marco Jansen lower down, South Africa will have two seam-bowling allrounders in the XI, a luxury they have long-wanted (especially after Jacques Kallis’ retirement) but seldom had. Both Mulder and Jansen are also players that South Africa have long-term investment in. They’re in their mid-20s, play all formats and will form part of the core of the squad in years to come along with Rickelton, Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne and – though not in this squad – Kwena Maphaka. It’s this younger contingent who have inspired a level of hope and positivity in South African cricket as they’ve emerged as what Smith called “new heroes.” His own sons, Smith said, admire the likes of Rickelton and Jansen because they bring a “feel good factor” to the sport.Prince has also been energised by the freshness of the squad, and hopes they can bask in the spotlight that’s been put on them and create their own legacy. “It’s a young group and a lot of them have had some fantastic success over the last 18 months to get themselves into this position. I think there’s a sense of everyone wanting the guy next to them to do well and enjoying each other’s success,” he said. “And it’s just been a fantastic journey to be a part of. Next week is going to be a special opportunity for these guys. Teams of the past have had successes but this is their moment. This is their opportunity to go out and do something special.”
