South Africa return to India without fear of the Turnado

South Africa are sensing a more even fight as India trade turners for true surfaces

Firdose Moonda11-Nov-20251:47

Phillander: South Africa’s young team has had ‘phenomenal preparation’ for India tour

India’s turnado years are over, or at least that’s what South Africa believe as they seek to win their first Test in the country in 15 years and maybe even a first series in 25. Unlike on their tour in 2015, when surfaces crumbled at the sight of a cricket ball, or on their tours of Bangladesh and Pakistan recently, South Africa expect the contest to be more balanced as India redefine home advantage in the wake of last year’s 3-0 home defeat to New Zealand.”I don’t think it will be as spin-friendly as we experienced in Pakistan,” Keshav Maharaj, South Africa’s first-choice left-arm spinner said from Kolkata. “I think it will be good wickets that deteriorate as the game goes on. If you watched a bit of the West Indies series, it went to day four and five. The narrative is changing in terms of getting wickets. You want to give yourself the best chance when you’re in home conditions, so maybe it’s felt that let’s play on good cricket wickets and let the game deteriorate as it goes on.”Related

Dhruv Jurel: too good to keep out, too good to just keep

Colossal task awaits SA's eight newcomers in India, but can they adapt?

As ESPNcricinfo had reported earlier, reverse swing is anticipated at the Eden Gardens and South Africa’s seamers will be pleased to hear that. The West Indies series serves as empirical evidence after the Delhi Test went to a fifth day even though India scored over 500 in their first innings and West Indies close to 400 in their second. So, it’s South Africa’s batters who will be happiest, with the ghosts of the last two series certain to re-emerge. In 2015, South Africa, then No.1 in the world and on a nine-year unbeaten run away from home, were bowled out for under 200 all but once in four Tests and the once was a rained-out draw. The Nagpur pitch, which hosted the third Test where India sealed the series, was rated poor. In 2019, South Africa, on the cusp of a major internal meltdown, fared slightly better and topped 400 once but still lost 3-0.Now, South Africa are back at No.1, they have won (Bangladesh 2024) and shared a series (Pakistan 2025) in other parts of the subcontinent, and they feel more equipped to deal with spin-friendly conditions especially when it comes to batting. “The line-up has come a long way,” Maharaj said. “Our hundreds are shared amongst each other, which is important because at any given time, someone stands up and really takes that responsibility. Sometimes a 60 in the sub is worth 150 in other conditions. Taking that responsibility is something that they’ve really embraced and it’s starting to show from a results point of view.”2:58

Philander: Harmer, Maharaj are world-class but Muthusamy will be the real talking point

In Pakistan, only Tony de Zorzi scored a century but there were fifties from Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Dewald Brevis and even Kagiso Rabada. In Bangladesh, de Zorzi, Stubbs, Wiaan Mulder and Kyle Verreynne all raised their bats to three figures. All those players are on this tour and though they will play Tests in India for the first time (apart from Rabada), they understand what it takes to be successful in less familiar conditions. They have also shown an ability to adapt to changing situations: from being on the ropes at home against Sri Lanka and Pakistan last year to sweeping the summer and qualifying for the WTC final and then fighting back against Australia at Lord’s to win the mace. South Africa want to build on that success in a new cycle, which includes tougher assignments than previous one and with this India series, what they see as the toughest.”There’s a real hunger and desire to beat India in India. It’s probably one of the toughest tours, if not the toughest tour on the Proteas calendar through various generations and some people were fortunate enough to cross the hurdle,” Maharaj said. “As a unit, we feel like it’s one of our biggest tests. And it will be a wonderful opportunity to grade ourselves, to see how far we’ve come. Slowly but surely, we started to conquer other parts of the subcontinent, and I feel like this is one assignment that we really, really want to take.”South Africa’s last Test win in India came in Nagpur in 2010 and their only Test series victory was in the year 2000. They have won five out of 19 Tests in India and none of their last seven matches there.

India vs Australia: when the World Cup bursts into life

Two of the greatest teams of modern times, with a storied past against each other, meet at a venue steeped in cricket history

Sambit Bal07-Oct-2023Australia are training in the outdoor nets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium as the sun sets over the Marina, a beach so wide that the water seems to start at the horizon. From up close, Mitchell Starc’s run-up seems almost as long, and Steven Smith, it feels, has been batting for an eternity.By Chennai’s standards, it’s an unusually cool evening. The monsoon has come early and the tree-lined streets leading to the stadium are wet, but the relief from the balmy heat is set off by worry about the fate of the match. However, locals are confident that weather disruptions, if any, will be minor. Which is just as well. With apologies to the other teams, this World Cup will burst to life when India take on Australia on Sunday.Related

India vs Pakistan in Ahmedabad is billed as the blockbuster of the tournament. It’s hard to match the emotional charge, visceral and bordering on the toxic, of a cricket match between these two countries.England vs Australia carries the significance of history and tradition, but for those who know their cricket, India vs Australia is a whole new feeling. Over the last two decades, they have been the worthiest of opponents, producing epic, gladiatorial, astonishing, and unforgettable contests. In many ways, it’s a sporting rivalry of the purest kind, based mainly on the quality of the cricket, the performances it has extracted and the memories it has created.Great players and performances are measured against the toughness of their opponents, and Indian players of the last two generations have their Australian links firmly established. It began with Sachin Tendulkar, who announced himself to the world with that dazzling hundred as a teenager in Perth in 1992 and went on to score ten more in Tests, and 20 in all, against Australia. VVS Laxman’s 281 in Kolkata in 2001 remains arguably the greatest Test innings by an Indian, and Rahul Dravid would count his 180 in that Test, and his match-winning double-hundred in Adelaide in 2003, among his finest. The India-Australia fixture has been one with stars and star performances•Getty ImagesVirat Kohli, Tendulkar’s batting successor, has followed the same path, saving his best for his greatest opponents, starting with a maiden Test hundred in Adelaide and following with seven more in Tests and 16 overall.Though he took his time to establish himself in the national side, Rohit Sharma’s precocity was established with a half-century full of serene drives in the first of two CB Series finals in 2008, in the course of which he helped India with a 123-run partnership with Tendulkar on a tough pitch. KL Rahul discovered himself as an international player with a stroke-filled hundred in Sydney in 2015, and the 91 from Shubman Gill – tipped to be India’s next all-format batting great – that set up India’s astonishing and history-making chase in Brisbane in 2021 has to be his best international innings yet.Australia’s World Cup dominance has its roots in India, where they came from behind in 1987 to win their first title in Calcutta, in front of the biggest audience for a World Cup final. It kicked off a journey where they became the pre-eminent team across formats. One of the architects of that win, Steve Waugh, would go on to elevate India in the minds of his compatriots as worthy rivals for Australia with his remark in 2001 about India being the final frontier for them. India have matched them step for step since. No other team has taken more Test series off Australia this century, and apart from South Africa, no other team has beaten them back to back in their own den. Between them, the two teams have ten appearances in World Cup finals, and seven winners’ trophies, and in the minds of many, Sunday’s match is already a final before the actual final, however early it may come in the tournament. The MA Chidambaram Stadium, a cricket venue steeped in the history and tradition of the game, where the reverence, affection and care for the sport is evident in every wall, and will be in the crowds that will fill the ground on Sunday, seems the appropriate stage for this event. The freshly painted murals that greet you when you walk through the main entrance depict Chennai’s cricket heritage, the stadium itself gleams with a new coat of white, the stands have been redesigned in recent years to let in sea breeze, and the outfield is lush. The last World Cup encounter between these two teams here was a thriller in 1987 that Australia edged by a run, just a year after the two teams played out a tied Test, only the second in history, on the same turf. Like he would go on to do in the final, Waugh defended eight runs in the last over of that Chepauk ODI, and two off the last ball, with, by some uncanny coincidence, Maninder Singh, the batter who faced the final ball in the tied Test, on strike. In the 1987 final, the home crowd in Calcutta was on the side of Allan Border’s Australia when they beat England, who had knocked India out•Getty ImagesIn hindsight, it was a reversed decision that became the clincher. A hit over the top down the ground by Dean Jones off Maninder had initially been deemed a four but was changed to six upon review during the break by umpire Dickie Bird, following protests from the Australians. In the absence of conclusive television evidence, it’s a call that is still disputed by the players involved, but it was a sign of the times that the incident led to no outrage then – let alone a diplomatic crisis between the boards.Australia have gone on to win four more World Cups since then, and India are the game’s undisputed powerhouse. The IPL draws the best of the world to these shores for nearly two months every year, and none more than it does the Australians. Cultural differences have melted away and so has the challenge of alien playing conditions. Many of the Australians in this year’s World Cup team have adopted India as a second home, or at least as a regular workplace away from home.So setting aside the rankings and recent form – India are on a hot streak and Australia have lost five of their last six ODIs – it will be a match of equals when the coin comes down on Sunday. Australia will put on their tournament armour against what feels like the best-prepared Indian team at a World Cup in recent memory. If signs are your thing, here’s another filter to gauge the significance of this match by. Barring 1987, Australia, the winningest World Cup side, have never won the World Cup when they have lost to India at least once in the tournament; and both of India’s World Cup-winning campaigns have featured a win over Australia in the earlier rounds. But why rely on quirky stats when the evidence before us points to the prospects of an utterly compelling day of cricket between two hot pre-tournament favourites?

Rounding the Bases: MLB Straight Up Picks for Every Game Today (How to Bet Braves-Diamondbacks on Monday)

The July 4 holiday is behind us, and while many people return to work to begin this week, there are several MLB teams that have an off day on Monday.

That leaves us with just seven games to bet today, but as always as SI Betting, we're going to share a moneyline bet for every single matchup.

There are a few series that are wrapping up on Monday, and a few starting, including the Arizona Diamondbacks taking on the Atlanta Braves in the late game on the slate.

New York Mets vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Prediction and Pick

Pittsburgh Pirates starter Mitch Keller struggled in his last two outings, giving up 10 runs (eight earned) to push his ERA to 3.48 on the season. However, I still think he gives the Pirates the advantage in this one.

Pittsburgh is 11-6 straight up when Keller is on the mound, and he's allowed two or fewer runs in seven of his last 10 starts. Meanwhile, New York Mets starter Christian Scott comes into this game with a 4.32 ERA, and New York is just 1-5 in his six starts.

Pittsburgh is in a prime spot to win the series finale tonight.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Washington Nationals Prediction and Pick

This is a great spot for the Washington Nationals, as youngster Mitchell Parker (a lefty) should have a chance to shut down a St. Louis Cardinals lineup that is 29th in the league in OPS.

Miles Mikolas (5.19 ERA) gets the ball for St. Louis, and the Cards are just 8-10 in his 18 starts. I love the Nationals to pick up a win at home in this one.

Cleveland Guardians vs. Detroit Tigers Prediction and Pick

Neither Gavin Williams or Keider Montero has pitched well — or pitched much — in the 2024 season, so I'm going to roll with the team that has been better in 2024.

The Guardians still lead the AL Central division with a 56-32 record and plus-97 run differential while the Tigers are just minus-19 in their run differential this season. I expect them to grab a win on Monday.

Colorado Rockies vs. Cincinnati Reds Prediction and Pick

Cincinnati is a must bet in this spot at home.

The Colorado Rockies are just 5-12 in Ryan Feltner's outings this season — he's posted a 1-7 record of his own — and Cincy has Andrew Abbott (8-6, 3.28 ERA) on the mound.

Back the Reds to snap their three-game skid tonight.

Minnesota Twins vs. Chicago White Sox Prediction and Pick

My favorite trends in Major League Baseball is back in action tonight.

Chicago White Sox starter Chris Flexen is on the mound against the Minnesota Twins, and the White Sox are just 2-16 when he pitches in 2024. So, we're betting the Twins — even though they've yet to announce a starter — on Monday.

Texas Rangers vs. Los Angeles Angels Prediction and Pick

Davis Daniel is making just his third start of the season for the Los Angeles Angels, but I think he's in a prime spot to lead the Angels to an upset win.

The Texas Rangers have struggled on the road (18-27 straight up) this season, and starter Jon Gray has allowed nine, zero, eight and three runs over his last four starts. Gray's ERA has ballooned to 3.92 after he entered his June 17 start with a 2.17 mark.

I'll roll with the Angels at home in this one.

Atlanta Braves vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Prediction and Pick

Chris Sale is on the mound for the Atlanta Braves, and that's been a great sign all season long, as he's posted a 2.71 and has led the Braves to an 11-5 record in his starts.

Yilber Diaz will make his Major League debut for the D-Backs in a tough spot against a Braves offense that is one of the best in baseball.

Not just Yang & Scales: 18-touch Celtic dud must be dropped by Rodgers

Celtic’s miserable season continues. On Sunday, Brendan Rodgers’ side suffered their first Premiership defeat of the campaign, losing 2-0 at Dens Park against Dundee, both goals coming in the first half, the second of which was an unfortunate Cameron Carter-Vickers own goal.

This was the Hoops’ first defeat at Dens since 1988, leaving them five points adrift league leaders Hearts, who they face at Tynecastle in a mouthwatering contest next Sunday.

Before then, the Celts are under pressure to get off the mark in the Europa League too, having yielded just one point from their first two matches, welcoming Austrian champions Sturm Graz to Parkhead on Thursday.

Ahead of these two massive fixtures, which Celtic summer signing should be concerned about losing his place in the starting lineup? Well, Yang is certainly one of them.

Why Yang was hooked at half time at Dundee

Among many players who offered very little on Sunday was Yang Hyun-Jun.

With Daizen Maeda sidelined due to a hamstring injury, Yang came into attack, chosen over James Forrest and summer signing Michel-Ange Balikwisha.

Well, the Korea Republic international touched the ball 25 times in the first half, attempting zero dribbles, so Chris Sutton, speaking during Sky Sports’ coverage at half time, asserted “just get him off”, adding that he’d offered absolutely nothing.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Well, Rodgers must’ve been listening, because Forrest replaced Yang during the interval, bringing to an end his first Premiership start since 23 August.

Meantime, at the other end of the pitch, Liam Scales endured a nightmare afternoon, turned inside and out by Dundee forwards Simon Murray, Cameron Congreve and Joe Westley, who caused the Celtic back-line problems all afternoon.

However, it is neither Scales nor Yang who should be most worried about their starting spot following this catastrophic defeat to Steven Pressley’s side who, lest we forget, were pre-season favourites for relegation.

Celtic star Rodgers must drop

As has been well documented, at the moment the transfer window slammed shut, Celtic did not have a senior centre-forward in their squad, following the sale of Adam Idah to Swansea City.

Thus, Kelechi Iheanacho arrived as a free agent, making a decent start to life in Glasgow in fairness to him, converting penalties against both Kilmarnock and Motherwell, as well as netting against Crvena zvezda in the Europa League.

However, as the table below documents, the Nigerian was completely anonymous in Dundee on Sunday.

Iheanacho did rank highly for shots, mustering four in total, the most of any player, but this didn’t yield anything, thwacking the woodwork once as well as missing one Opta-defined big chance.

He also won only 50% of his duels while, most concerningly, he touched the ball just 20 times, the same number as Balikwisha, who was introduced in the 64th minute and 15 fewer than ‘keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Considering Iheanacho played only around 1,300 minutes last season for Middlesbrough and Sevilla, he was always going to need time to get up to speed, and that was certainly apparent at the weekend.

Had Maeda been fit, he would surely have dropped out of the team on Thursday, although youngster Johnny Kenny, who came on at half-time, is talented enough to displace Iheanacho, so may feel he deserves an opportunity.

Thus, with huge games against Sturm Graz, Hearts, Midtjylland and Rangers to come in the next fortnight, the Celts’ may stand a better chance of winning these matches with the Nigerian left in reserve, utilised as an option off the bench.

Patrick Roberts 2.0: Rodgers must now unleash Celtic's forgotten star

As Brendan Rodgers searches for a winning formulae, should he give a debut to Celtic’s “dominant” youngster who could be the new Patrick Roberts?

Spurs’ new Eriksen & Son: Frank has unearthed a “game-changing” new duo

Tottenham Hotspur have experienced all the emotions over the past several years, and the plan is that Thomas Frank will instil stability and a winning culture over the years at the helm.

However, the Danish coach has been through some turbulent waters across his first several months in the dugout, with attacking play far from fluid.

Creativity has been at a low ebb in the Premier League, and while neither James Maddison nor Dejan Kulusevski has kicked a ball this season due to injury, Frank will be expected to spark more fruitful playmaking returns going forward.

We have seen green shoots in recent weeks, Spurs currently riding a two-match winning run, but the squad need to kindle some new talismanic figures, with the absence of the likes of Heung-min Son keenly felt.

Why Spurs are missing Son

Tottenham have markedly failed to replace Son and Harry Kane after the respective superstars’ sales in recent years, and though the South Korean was on the decline last year, he still posted 23 goal contributions across all competitions.

That’s natural potency you just can’t teach, only guide in the right direction. The 33-year-old is now playing over the pond for Los Angeles FC, but Frank could certainly do with a new superstar to emerge and prove themselves in Son’s stead.

His leadership and devastating ability were something shared with Kane, but stripping it further back, Christian Eriksen too.

For sure, the Lilywhites would benefit from the Dane’s creative flair right now, especially with Maddison and Kulusevski both out of action. Eriksen notched 69 goals and 88 assists across 305 games for the north London club, and former Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy marvelled at his “world-class” quality while at White Hart Lane.

It would be easy to turn toward the transfer market for solutions, and though Frank needs to find a formula that creates a natural well of creativity and coherence in offence, he may actually have two new recruits who are well on their way to emulating the likes of Son and Eriksen before them.

Spurs' new Son and Eriksen duo

Eriksen and Son were instrumental parts in creating a Tottenham team, led by Mauricio Pochettino, that was among the most feared and entertaining on the continent.

It was always going to be a struggle to replace such players, but in Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons, Frank might just have the tools to resculpt the aforementioned.

Simons, 21, has endured a tough start to life down N17, but with two goals from two matches, the Dutch number ten is beginning to show why ENIC Group paid north of £50m to bring him over from RB Leipzig during the summer, beating Chelsea in the transfer battle.

He has been hailed as a “superstar” of a talent by analyst Ben Mattinson, and he ranks among the top 3% of positional peers in the Premier League this season for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref, emphasising that Eriksen-esque passing range that will only develop further over the months and years.

Kudus might not be cut from the same cloth as Son, but he certainly has that wow factor about him, capable of doing things with a football that those around him and against him simply can’t match.

The fact that the former West Ham winger sits as the Premier League’s joint-top assist maker this season says much of his ability. Analyst Raj Chohan has even hailed Simons’ “game-changing” ability, suggesting he has more in his locker than the still-impressive Kudus.

Perhaps the most exciting part is that the best is yet to come. After all, Son took a while to get going after joining Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, while Eriksen needed Christmas to come and pass before uncovering a Midas touch in the final third in 2013/14, when he joined from Ajax.

We must be patient, but there’s no denying that Tottenham have signed several forwards with the capacity to stand out not just among their peers but against anyone in the Premier League.

Tottenham haven’t clicked into gear yet this season, but there have been plenty of positives to take as Frank navigates through the first months of this post-Ange Postecoglou era.

And with Simons coming into his own and Kudus showing off his skilful qualities, the Londoners have all the tools they need to reach the next level when the different parts all come together.

Udogie upgrade: Spurs enter race to sign "the world's most coveted left-back"

Frank is expected to be backed in the upcoming transfer windows by Tottenham owners ENIC Group.

Aston Villa plotting £18m bid for "tremendous" defender, Martinez is a big fan

Aston Villa are now plotting a £18m bid for a “tremendous” defender, who is also being targeted by Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, with Emiliano Martinez a big fan.

Villa keen on strengthening despite resurgent form

Villa have made major improvements over the past month or so, having won six of their last seven matches in the Premier League, which has propelled them to fourth in the table, and Unai Emery has been impressed by his side’s recent performances.

After the 2-1 victory away at Leeds United last time out, the manager said: “The second half (was) better, but overall, 90 minutes, I am so happy how we competed. Even the first half, we didn’t play brilliant, but we were always trying to set our gameplan on the field, and progressively we did it.”

The Villans went 1-0 down at Elland Road, with Martinez receiving criticism for his goalkeeping in the build-up to Lukas Nmecha’s opening goal.

However, a second-half Morgan Rogers brace turned the game on its head, with the goalkeeper’s blushes being spared, and Aston Villa have now joined the race for one of the Argentinian’s international teammates.

That is according to a report from Spain, which states Villa are now plotting a €20m (£18m) opening offer for River Plate defender Lautaro Rivero, having tracked the centre-back for months, and Martinez has provided positive feedback on his compatriot.

The Villans believe the 33-year-old’s personal relationship with the River Plate star could give them the edge in the race for his signature, despite rival interest from Man City and Tottenham.

Although the Argentinian has a €100m (£88m) release clause in his contract, River Plate would be willing to sanction a departure for considerably less, and there is a belief he could make an instant impact at Villa Park.

"Tremendous" Rivero has earned big Premier League move

Hailed as “tremendous” by journalist Juan Patricio Balbi, the 22-year-old may now be ready to test himself in England, having performed very well over the past year, placing in the 93rd percentile for tackles per 90, compared to other centre-backs, courtesy of averaging 2.27.

Aston Villa make Emiliano Martinez sale decision amid Unai Emery comments

There has been a key update on Martinez’s future, following the goalkeeper pushing for a move during the summer.

ByDominic Lund Nov 19, 2025

Villa are arguably well-stocked at centre-back, with Pau Torres and Ezri Konsa forming a reliable partnership as of late, but Tyrone Mings has been unable to put his injury problems behind him, and is potentially in the latter stages of his career at 32-years-old.

As such, Emery could do with bringing in a younger centre-back, and having recently received his first cap for Argentina, Rivero could be capable of pushing for a starting spot.

Yankees Fans Who Interfered With Play During World Series Banned From All MLB Events

After their shocking act in Game 4 of the World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees on Oct. 29, two Yankees fans have formally received their punishment.

MLB has banned Austin Capobianco and John P. Hansen from all of its events in perpetuity after they interfered with Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts's attempt to catch a foul ball, it told WCBS-TV in New York Friday afternoon.

"Based on your conduct, Major League Baseball ("MLB") is banning you indefinitely from all MLB stadiums, offices, and other facilities. You are also hereby banned indefinitely from attending any events sponsored by or associated with MLB," the league said in a statement. "Please be advised that if you are discovered at any MLB property or event, you will be removed from the premises and subject to arrest for trespass."

In the first inning of Game 4, Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres fouled a 1-0 Ben Casparius pitch down the right field line. As Betts jumped for the ball, Capobianco and Hansen attempted to jostle it out of his hands; umpires alertly called Torres out. The fans were ejected from the game and later banned from attending Game 5.

New York went on to win the game, but went on to lose the series in five games.

Lamine Yamal not good enough for Real Madrid! Barcelona winger lacks 'class and culture' required to make it at Los Blancos but ex-star wants 'phenomenon' Pedri at the Bernabeu

Former Real Madrid striker Ivan Zamorano has sparked controversy by claiming Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal 'doesn’t have the essence or soul' of a Real Madrid player. While dismissing the winger as unfit for Los Blancos, Zamorano showered praise on Pedri, calling him a 'phenomenon' and urging Barcelona to better guide Yamal amid recent off-field distractions.

  • Yamal labelled ‘not Real Madrid material’ by Zamorano

Former Madrid striker Zamorano has launched a strong criticism of Barcelona’s 18-year-old winger Yamal, saying the youngster “isn’t the essence or the soul of what a Real Madrid player should be.”

The Chilean described Yamal as a talented player lacking the maturity and character expected at the Santiago Bernabeu. His comments arrive amid growing scrutiny of the teenager’s attitude and professionalism after a turbulent few weeks both on and off the pitch.

'Pedri has the essence of Madrid' – Zamorano’s contrasting praise

Speaking to Josep Pedrerol on the ex-Madrid star made his feelings clear when comparing Yamal to Barcelona midfielder Pedri, whom he described as a perfect example of humility and class.

“I wouldn’t sign Lamine Yamal for Real Madrid. He’s a star, but he doesn’t embody the essence or soul of what a Real Madrid player should be,” Zamorano said. “I would sign Pedri, who is a star and a phenomenon… and without saying a word. He is humble, down-to-earth, and speaks only when necessary. Pedri has the essence, the soul, of Real Madrid.”

Zamorano, who represented Los Blancos between 1992 and 1996, went on to emphasise that players wearing the white shirt must reflect the club’s “class and culture.” He added: “Real Madrid is a team with class and culture, and the players who play for Madrid have to represent that. I never heard Messi say that Real Madrid steals, and he was the best in the world.”

His remark was a direct reference to Yamal’s pre-Clasico Twitch stream, where the teenager stirred controversy by quipping: “Yes, of course, they steal, they complain.” The comment reportedly angered several Madrid players and added fuel to the growing criticism surrounding his maturity.

  • Barcelona urged to guide Yamal amid growing frustration

Despite his criticism, Zamorano offered advice for Barca, suggesting that Yamal still has the potential to become a legendary player if properly mentored. “They have to try to guide Lamine Yamal. That way he’ll only become a great player. Players who leave a legacy are made of a different breed,” he said.

The young winger’s struggles have been evident on and off the field. He has been battling a recurring groin issue, while also dealing with increased media scrutiny following his recent breakup with singer Nicki Nicole. He was also involved in a spat with Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal at the end of the recent Clasico clash between the two sides, which the Bernabeu club won 2-1.

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick, who continues to back the teenager publicly, addressed Yamal’s fitness concerns after the 3-1 win over Elche. “He has to manage his injury; he’s disciplined. He has to train, undergo treatment… he’s doing it. I can’t say the injury is over; it comes and goes. And he has to manage it,” Flick explained.

The German manager has privately expressed frustration over the mounting distractions surrounding the winger but remains hopeful that Yamal’s focus will return once his injury stabilises and media pressure eases.

Focus turns to Brugge test before international break

Barcelona’s attention now shifts back to football as they prepare to face Club Brugge in the Champions League. The Catalan giants currently sit ninth in the continental table and will aim for a crucial win to strengthen their qualification hopes before facing Celta Vigo in La Liga.

Trailing five points behind leaders Real Madrid, Flick’s men are under pressure to close the gap before the international break. With fixtures piling up, the German coach is counting on his young stars including Yamal, who has four goals from nine matches this season, to rediscover their rhythm and help steady the club’s form during a crucial phase of the campaign.
